photography: (not so) Wordless Wednesday... - 06/15/11 07:41 PM
(not so) Wordless Wednesday...Have you ever had one of those days were everything is a blur? These past few days have been for me. But then, it  seems that when one has a week to do nothing but goof off; time seems to move in an accelerated pace. Who knows. Could be that one is hell bent on packing 30 hours of activities in a 24 hour day. Then too, maybe the time gods trick us. You know, they speed time up; giving us 20 hours and saying, "Dude, I just gave you 24." What ever the case, time moves way … (20 comments)

photography: Here's a Picture You Don't See Every Day... - 06/08/11 09:22 PM
Here's a Picture You Don't See Every Day...  There is something about space that fascinates some of us. I will admit it, I am a techie and a trekie and there is something about space, voyages to other planets and solar systems that really fascinates me. I really don't know where he got it, but a friend of mine from CA sent me this picture of the shuttle Endeavour as docked with the International Space station. My only question is how did they snap the picture? No matter how they did it, it is neat. Talk about technology at it's finest... … (16 comments)

photography: Photography Tips and Cheats… - 03/22/11 07:37 AM
Photography Tips and Cheats…We all like to take and look at good photos and ActiveRain has many talented photographers. Spring is here and the urge is to grab the camera and start snapping pics to share with our friends. Here's a few tips and cheats that will work with any camera whether it be point-and-shoot or DSLR.

What's there not to like about the colorful display and bountiful flora of trees this time of year? While mass displays are great in some instances; sometimes, small, more intimate settings adds beauty and mystique.Good photos often take time. Don't get in a … (32 comments)

photography: Photography Tips and Cheats… - 03/17/11 05:09 AM
Photography Tips and Cheats…Spring is just around the corner and soon, budding photographers will be copping some rays and enjoying what Mother Natures brings forth as they buzz from flower to flower, snapping photos and uploading them to share with their friends here in ActiveRain. But sometimes, Maw doesn't play well with others or produce the scene that we envision. So do what any good photographer does - cheat!

One of my favorite cheats is the early morning dew or misty rain look. But who wants to lie down on wet, soggy mulch or grass in order to get … (109 comments)

photography: Good Night ActiveRain… - 03/16/11 08:28 PM
Good Night ActiveRain…Two things you can say about technology, you either swear by it or at it. Years ago, when I entered the digital age of photography, I had to learn a whole new way of shooting pictures as some of my older manual lenses didn't work too well with my old D50. Enter the age of purchasing newer lenses - Yeech. One of my favorite lenses, a 101mm f1.8 Macro set seldom used due to the fact that I was swearing at the newer technology. I reckon that that there were many of us that had expensive manual lenses that … (29 comments)

(not so) Speechless Sundae…
What do you do on a dreary, drizzly, gray, day that's fit for neither folks or fowl? Pop on down to the Lawn and Garden show at the Fairgrounds in Nashville, TN.The sights and sounds of Spring will soon make one forget that it is still winter, and spring is just around the corner. One of my personal favorites were the flower arrangements. Sorry for the poor quality, but there is only so much one can do considering the lighting conditions and no tripod. I reckon, it is the thought that counts...

photography: Deadly Sins of Indoor Photography ~ Part 3… - 03/02/11 06:33 AM
Deadly Sins of Indoor Photography ~ Part 3…We all like to make a good impression and want to put our best foot forward. However; sometimes we stumble. Some mistakes are easily correctable, some we just can't overcome. As I had mentioned in an earlier post, indoor photography is the most challenging of all photo arenas, yet so many take a cavalier approach when taking/posting photos for their listings. My goal is not to teach you the mechanics, but to make you aware of the many sins that most novices make. Good photography can make or break your sale. Today, as promised, … (59 comments)

photography: The gods Smiled… - 02/27/11 09:09 AM
The gods Smiled…What's there not to like about vintage cars? These snapshots of days gone by, with their voluptuous curves, brilliant coats of hand-rubbed lacquer, and dazzling chrome are rolling works of art that, IMHO, rival any paintings by the Masters. While presenting at at a first-time home buyer seminar yesterday, this '39 Packard owned by "At Your Service Chauffeuring" was parked in front. Knowing how much I appreciate these beauties, the gods smiled and gave the nod. I could not help but drool as I squeezed off a few shots...

photography: Deadly Sins of Indoor Photography - Part 1... - 02/24/11 06:10 AM
Deadly Sins of Indoor Photography - Part 1...Being in the real estate profession, it is imperative that good, high-quality photos be taken in order to effectively market your product. Shooting the exterior is easy with its constant light source, the challenge is indoors. Natural light, bouncing off walls, ceilings and polished floors in conjunction with artificial light sources can generate some unflattering photos. Learning how to master the art of indoor photography can be frustrating, I know, I have taken thousands of poor shots. Below are some of the "Deadly Sins" that most amateurs and some professionals make. Sin #1: Indoor … (65 comments)

(not so) Speechless Sundae...
It has oft been said that practice makes perfect. And so it goes with everything, especially photography. I've been wanting to get out and play with my new camera, but the weather been anything but cooperative.   Yesterday was absolutely Gaw-Gis Dahling. Blue skies, abundant sunshine and above freezing temps prompted a walk around Radnor Lake Wilderness Area in Southern Davidson/Nashville Metro. There are several mistakes in this photo. But the whole purpose of the shoot was to learn, analyze and make adjustments. Hopefully, I will learn what's under the hood before warmer weather sets in...

photography: HDR ~ A Picture Tutorial... - 02/10/11 05:58 AM
HDR ~ A Picture Tutorial...I will be the first to admit, I am not the best photographer here in the rain. There are many that are far, far better. However; having spent 46 years wandering behind the lens, this old dog has learned a trick or two. I have been asked by several to write brief a tutorial about HDR (high dynamic range) photography and tone mapping. While everyone who uses this technology may have differing methods and techniques, this works best for me.

Driving to the office yesterday morning, I was captivated by the brilliant sun rise (above). … (48 comments)

photography: Warm Up Your Listing Photos ~ Use Ambient Lighting... - 02/04/11 06:18 AM
Warm Up Your Listing Photos ~ Use Ambient Lighting... To use a grossly overworked adage, "You don't have a second chance to make a good first impression." applies to everything in life. Even the pictures you upload to your local MLS. Maybe, it's me or maybe it's because I have the "eye" and knowledge, but IMHO, "Some agents otta stick to what they do best and leave the photog work to someone else." When possible, I strive to use the warm, inviting glow of ambient lighting and avoid flash. Flash washes out the soft inviting colors we see with our naked … (100 comments)

Don't Be Afraid to Try Something Different...Everyone who reads and subscribes to my blog knows that I have a passion for life and photography. I will be the first to admit, I am no Ansel Adams, but I have managed to learn a thing or two over the past 46 years behind the lens. So what have I learned? Don't be afraid to try something different...

Hundreds of photographers have shot downtown Nashville, TN from the Woodland Street Bridge much like you see it in the above photo. Downtown Nashville is a unique blend of the old, turn-of-the-century waterfront buildings, … (70 comments)

(not so) Wordless Wednesday...Where does time go? The last colors of autumn are waning, Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner, and before we know it, we will be starting a new year. Seasonal November storms make short work of the remaining leaves still brave enough to linger this late in the season. A walk in the woods this past weekend was enough to rejuvenate the synapses and put me in the right mind to have some photo shopping fun...

photography: Call it Quits, While You're Ahead... - 11/09/10 06:18 PM
Call it Quits, While You're Ahead... We've all had them. Days that we have been busier than a ____ ... Yeah, one of those too. Couple that with nothing that really hit the hot button to write about and there you have it - the dreaded double whammy. Kinda makes you want to rent yourself out as a vacuum, because days like this really suck and blow... Okay, now that I've got that off my chest. How about I post a picture and I will go in the corner, suck my thumb and sulk for awhile. Tomorrow will be a better … (18 comments)

(not so) Speechless Sundae...<sigh> Time is not too much fun when you are constantly on the fly. A brief trip to the Smokies was just what the Doctor ordered. What's there not to like about a quickie every now and then. No phone, no distractions, no clients. Just time. Time to wander and get lost somewhere in the pixels of your mind. Precious moments to let it all go and grasp a hand full of sanity in an otherwise insane world. Intervals like this rejuvenate the soul, refresh the mind, and rekindle creativity. The world and what you see is the … (24 comments)

(not so) Speechless Sundae... As the cooler breaths of fall displace the warm days of summer, we start packing away summer's wardrobe. The sights, sounds and smell of fall and fall's festivities will excite the senses and create many photo ops. While grandiose vistas are certainly eye candy for the senses, sometimes, it is the simpler things that often get overlooked...

photography: My Megapixels Are Bigger Than Your Megapixels ~ Cropping... - 08/28/10 07:37 AM
My Megapixels Are Bigger Than Your Megapixels ~ Cropping...      Most everyone likes to take good pictures, whether it be with a pocket camera or a dSLR. The difference between a good shot and a great shot is what I call "wiggle room". Wiggle room starts with shooting with the highest pixel capacity your camera can muster.      Cropping is one of the easiest techniques with which to start. I have used this post production in my film days and still do so in the digital arena. Cropping gets rid of unwanted clutter and allows you and your audience to focus … (22 comments)

photography: Hummer Moments... - 08/07/10 07:08 AM
Hummer Moments...      Ever had those days where there is not enough fog buster in the pot to penetrate the pea soup that is swirling behind your eyeballs? Your senses are socked in and all flights of fancy are grounded.      Incoherent thoughts, endeavoring to penetrate the never ending shades of gray, grope at indistinguishable silhouettes in a futile attempt to grasp the incomprehensible.       Some call it writers block while others call it being cranially challanged. I call it having hummer moments. A time when simple "yes" or "no" answers take a "H-m-m-m... Let me think about that..."      Thankfully, … (25 comments)

photography: Well, That's Just Duckie... - 03/14/10 05:27 PM
Yesterday, while driving around Big Oak Lake, in Spring Hill, TN yesterday, I came across this female wood duck. This was a rare find, as most of their habitat in Nashville and Brentwood has been displaced by development. Thankfully, I had my telephoto lens on camera as I crept up behind a blind and squeezed off a few shots.
