harris county: Opossum anyone! - 10/25/12 02:50 AM

(This photo was in one of those unattributed forward emails but seemed like a good illustration)

Yesterday morning we saw that a large potted aloe Vera plant had been rolled onto its side.  Odd!Then this morning as I waited for the morning coffee to take effect, I noticed movement in one of the trees by the back fence.  I also noted that whatever was causing the tree movement had about a foot of long skinny tail...A closer look confirmed that we had been visited by a large possum!  The creature was not playing Possum,.. He is … (9 comments)

harris county: Gertie the Goat - 09/30/12 09:03 AM
While searching through my brain for possible blog ideas, a memory surfaced. In the early 1980s I helped my parents move from their suburban home to the country. It had been their dream to have a couple of acres close to a small town.  They wanted to retire and raise sheep or goats, and have a large garden.  An additional plus as far as the dream went was to have a pond that they could stock. We found it right on the edge of Tomball Texas.    It was an old farm house with a true country kitchen, two bedrooms, a wood stove, a big … (3 comments)

harris county: This time last year.... - 07/13/12 12:15 PM
As we navigate around the flooded areas we remember well that this time last year was a drought.

Neither extreme is desirable.

Having the surrounding areas so dry it feels as if you are living in a tinder box is frightening.

In 1994 there was flood that flooded hundreds homes and caused massive destruction.

The areas that always flooded have flooded again.  Due to lots of recent construction More places are proving that concrete does not absorb water well.

This gives us all a great opportunity to view the areas we serve to see what … (1 comments)

We noted that there is a major event being planned.  You are cordially invited to come share in the celebration according to the sign!

Spring Texas has evolved into a quaint shopping extravaganza.

Antique buildings line several streets . They house everything from health foods, to antiques, to hot sauce, to hardware and various eating establishments from cotton candy and sno-cones to burgers to some things much nicer and heathier!

harris county: Ahhhh..... They joy of an Open House - 08/27/11 02:50 AM
On the order of the hurry up and wait department,  morning came early so we could finish the open house dishes, clean the silver and pack provisions in the car.
One of the not so pleasant findings was that our open house signs had vanished....  we seldom do open houses so they are not a part of our regular inventory.   Creative modifications were made to existing arrow signs and house for sale signs.
When we arrived in the subdivision for the extravaganza scheduled, we put out signs to help people find the target house.
We then unloaded the car, … (2 comments)

harris county: A Challenging Sale.... in Tomball TX - 07/22/11 02:13 PM
We were treated to a challenge recently.  We were asked to list the house of a special person in our lives.  To be trusted with this is both a challenge and a privilege, but it comes with extra amounts of stress!

The house belongs to the Rector of our church.  It is lovely and only four years old but since the church moved to its present location about 3 years ago, the house is further away now than desired.  Since our Rector is constantly on call and very diligent in his duties, he is almost always at the church.  This … (0 comments)

harris county: Stopping Those Nasty Debt Collector Calls for Good! - 07/03/11 03:36 PM

For any of you who may be having extreme financial difficulty that's possibly not intentional or that are due to circumstances beyond your personal control you may just find some of the following information useful.

Orange County, CA - If you are in the middle of a financial  crisis paying off your unsecured debt - ie your credit cards - should be a far lower priority than paying on the secured debt on your home or for the basics you need to live (food, utilities, clothes) An unsecured debt is one where default will not result in the … (1 comments)

harris county: Decontamination: An interesting story! - 06/30/11 06:04 AM

While reading my email I sometimes run across interesting things that are going on in and around our world. I thought that this might be of interest to my readers since it helps clean up radioactive contamination.  And I suppose that the Japanese would be a people who actually do have first hand experience in cleaning up that stuff. Sunflowers to clean radioactive soil in JapanBy Agence France-Presse, Japan is asking people to grow sunflowers, said to help decontaminate radioactive soil, in response to the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Since the link didn't actually copy above it's below so that you … (1 comments)

harris county: How Hot is HOT!!!!!!! Visit the Pepper Palace! - 06/29/11 03:35 PM

With 100 degree plus weather for most of the last month, one has to wonder why on earth we would stop at a “pepper shop.”  But! Stop we did today at this specialty Pepper Palace in sensational Olde town Spring.

We were on our way to pick up some trusted homeopathic remedies over at Nature's Solutions when this place caught our eye.  We are always watching for examples of good marketing, and this signage worked well.

Having been raised by a Cajun Chef, hot peppers are a much loved part of all my cooking and favorite dishes.  We are very … (1 comments)

harris county: Open House! A Relic of a By-Gone Era!! - 06/28/11 03:24 PM
Having done open houses since the late 1970s, and having sold ONE as a result of this now antiquated market tool, it is our opinion that they are really not useful anymore.

The consumer now has access to photos and virtual tours on line.  That fact alone means sitting for hours in a house so people can view it personally, is not the highest or best use of our time.  You may have also noticed that there is NO way to qualify the people who are being given access to these homes.

Facts that unfortunately there were mean … (3 comments)

harris county: Frequently Asked Questions about the Dangers of Mold - 06/28/11 03:17 PM

OK everyone!  You hear about Mold all the time but maybe you don't know much about it or the dangers it poses.  Listen up, tune in and read up to educate yourself. Some of this mold stuff is DEADLY TOXIC.

If we have learned anything from our 3 part series on mold exposure we know that it's dangerous.
Mold Exposure Part One we talked about the root of some health issues and how they are grounded in the air we breathe, the home we live in and the environment we are used to.
Mold Exposure Part Two talked about … (0 comments)

harris county: What is your job in the Home Buying Process? - 06/25/11 04:14 PM
Have you ever noticed that there are many jobs associated with the home buying process?  There sure are!  The seller has a job.  It is to put the house they are selling into top notch condition, to pack things up, to remain calm through the process and to move out when the transaction is finished.  Appraisers have a job.  It is to arrive at the fair market value of the house that is going through the other processes on the way to closing.  Inspectors go over the prospective purchase to be sure that it is what it appears to be, or … (0 comments)

harris county: Perspectives ~ Tomball Style! - 06/23/11 04:18 PM

The media continues to say the economy is dead, but look around at the number of construction projects that are in full building mode.  Based on our previous experience here in Tomball TX selling homes in the recessionary 1980s, this is not a bad recession.  Texas seems to have a different attitude, and just keeps on trying to make the best of things.  Remember that Texas was its own nation many years ago.  Perhaps the rest of the country could take a look and learn a lesson!  So much of life is a matter of perspective!    As you see, … (4 comments)

harris county: Swallows are a little messy but they sure are Cute! - 06/23/11 03:43 PM
This afternoon we met some of Tomball’s less well known residents.    They are small but will get your attention quickly.  We were in one of the businesses close to the Post Office when we happened to look up and see this rather crowded family.  Whenever you feel that you live in crowded quarters, count your blessings.  You no doubt do not share a nest on the edge of a ledge with five other birds of a feather!
Believe it or not this is a group of baby birds not ready for prime time!  This group is bound to be … (3 comments)

harris county: Storage Units! Sensible or Not? Maybe..... - 06/20/11 03:06 PM
Have you noticed the increase in the numbers of Storage Units in the past twenty years?

These 10x10 and up units represent a prime use of Real Estate where they used to be somewhat rare.
They come in climate controlled, gated, and two story units.

There are lots of uses for them too.  From time to time one will have a time when there is more stuff than space in their lives.  They are handy for storing stuff for house staging, interim moves, and even for the college child who is only going to be home for … (3 comments)

harris county: With a little help from our friends..... - 06/20/11 03:01 PM
Today we observed a touching sight.  You know, one of those visions that make you say: “ahhhh!”

As we approached Beautiful Downtown Tomball TX on SH 249, there was suddenly a bottleneck in the traffic flow.  At 1:00 on a HOT Saturday afternoon this is not normal.

As we got closer to the source of the tie up we saw an SUV under the propulsion of two country gents, giving it all they had pushing it.  Since it was approximately 102 degrees on our patio just a short distance and time ago, I am guessing it felt like 110 … (0 comments)
