active rain: Halfway to a Million Points on Active Rain - 03/24/10 07:40 PM
l looked up at the meter this morning a realized that I would be passing the half million point mark on Active Rain with this post.
I haven't checked yet.  What do you win with 500,000 points?  Do you get a gold watch or a trip to Las Vegas?  I would even settle for shooting lessons from TLW or a hula class with Blogging Bertha.
When I joined Active Rain there were not many regular writers.  I believe I could name almost all of them.  Now there are many thousands and growing.  Not bad for an idea drawn up on a … (18 comments)

active rain: Your Blog Can Get You Noticed - 08/27/09 05:01 AM
I got an e-mail the other day from my Board of REALTORS®.  As I began to read the message they referenced one of my blog posts.  The immediate thought I had was oh no, did I say something wrong.  I am pretty careful about the usual stuff.
I never mention names, just situations. I am careful not to violate any copyright laws. I check my facts for accuracy. After reading only the first sentence or so, my mind began racing with thoughts of what I may have done wrong.  If the Board is contacting me about a blog post it must … (22 comments)

active rain: On the Road to the Orlando NAR Convention - 11/05/08 04:17 PM
I am 2/3s of the way to Orlando and having a great adventure.  Monday evening I flew from Honolulu, had a early morning stopover in Dallas and arrived in Springfield, MO late Tuesday morning.
My older brother Russ Prothero, a REALTOR® in Branson met me at the airport.  He had his suitcase, snacks and a case of water in his pickup truck so we hit the highway heading south.  I need to add we stopped for gasoline.  We I left Hawaii, our gas price dropped to $3.25/ gallon and we were celebrating.  It was $1.89/ gallon in Springfield.
His GPS was … (21 comments)

active rain: Active Rain Was at the PacRim 2008 - 09/30/08 10:33 AM
PacRim 2008 is the Hawaii Association of REALTORS® annual conference.  This year it was held at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on September 18 & 19, 2008.
This year the internet was front and center.  Social networking and blogging, including Active Rain were featured topics at this convention.
Bob Stewart the Community Evangelist from Active Rain was the speaker at one of the breakout sessions (I did not make that up. It is actually on his business card).  I was extremely honored to be asked the Hawaii Association of REALTORS® (HAR) to do the introduction.  Bob did a terrific job of introducing … (28 comments)

active rain: Active Rain Will be in the House - 09/07/08 02:46 PM
2008 Pacific Rim Conference, September 18 & 19, 2008 - Hilton Waikoloa Village, (Big Island of Hawaii)
I was hoping to play hooky from the conference this year, with NAR in Florida just around the corner.  That is just too many days away from home and business and it is looking like an extremely busy week.  Also I do not enjoy the struggle at the airports, the cramped airline seats and sleeping on hard beds.  So I made my choice, NAR was to be the last trip of the year.
I have never been to Florida and I convinced my brother … (27 comments)

active rain: 400,000 Points, 600 Posts and Still a Blogging Fool! - 08/05/08 12:46 PM

When I joined Active Rain, I never imagined where this would take me.  I thought blogging was for kids.
When I logged on the first time, I did not think I would have much interest in it.  After spending a little time on the site, I began to see the potential power of this forum.  Man someone had a great idea here.  So I built my profile and checked out some blog articles.  There were not that many members back then.  There were a few really good one though.  Broker Bryant and TLW were among the first that, I … (81 comments)

active rain: If Your Business is Slow, You Need to Make a Decision - 07/30/08 04:57 PM
I hear many agents complaining how their business is slow.  Instead of complaining step up and put your energy into growing your business.  This post has no magic bullets just tried and true tactics that work.
Are you tight on resources? There are many free and cheap things you can do:
Put magnets or lettering on your vehicle. Where a name badge always (almost always). Take all the office floor time you can. Volunteer to sit open houses. Create useful handouts to give out to consumers. Develop a newsletter and deliver it door to door on a regular basis. E-mail and … (28 comments)

active rain: Too Harsh or Speaking the Truth? - 07/29/08 07:34 AM
In the past I have written many posts on what I believe the public should expect from a licensed professional REALTOR®.
Here are a few of the items that in the past have gotten me negative comments.  Many from those who believe it is OK because of their needs, while considering the needs of the public second.
Being a full time agent. Getting education. Earning designations. Answering your phone. Marketing listings Only selling one service to your client. Networking with other professionals in your area. Working with local funding lenders as much as possible. Improving your services. Attending REALTOR® conferences … (25 comments)

active rain: 100,000 Members in Active Rain - 07/25/08 07:09 AM
I know we are all watching to see the membership meter turn over the 100,000 mark.  It looks like today is the day!  When I saw Active Rain, I said to myself this will be powerful.  I never imagined how powerful and how fast.
The folks that created this wonderful forum, made something really special.  It took real vision to create this and to keep it improving and growing.  To think only a couple of years ago this was just an idea on a napkin.
Since joining I have made many new friends, both in person and online.  Several great clients … (18 comments)

active rain: 350,000 points and 521 posts – My Business is Growing - 04/24/08 12:47 AM
When I joined Active Rain I was not sure if this would be something I would be interested in.  David Kucic talked me into checking it out.  I shortly saw the benefit of this wonderful forum and jumped in with both feet.
In a reasonably short time I have written 521 posts and hit the 350,000 points mark.  Now I know that sounds like a lot and it is.  But let's look at what it takes to make that many posts.
Market reports - This something I generate for communities in my area to share with clients and to keep my … (58 comments)

active rain: 500 Posts and Kicking it to Another Gear - 03/13/08 07:11 PM
I looked up to the meter at the top of my Active Rain page and realized I am hitting the half century mark.  500 blog posts!  For those who have been following my posts the answer to the big question is:  Yes I am still a two finger typist.
Back in November 2006 when I joined Active Rain, I had never even visited a blog before.  I barely knew what a blog was.  At that time I never imagined that I would be writing about my 500th blog post.

active rain: Blogging Will Improve Your Real Estate Skills - 03/11/08 08:33 PM
After 14 months on Active Rain, I conclude that blogging has sharpened my skills as a real estate agent.
This forum benefits real estate agents and other real estate professionals in several ways
We improve our understanding of the business, by writing about it.You research your facts.Sort out your thoughts. Then reduce it to writing.  Once we post our blog article we have a discussion and an exchange of knowledge with other top professionals.Other professionals post articles that are filled with valuable information we can take back to our business. Before we speak to our clients we have had the opportunity to organize our thoughts, … (34 comments)

active rain: To Be or Not to Be Featured - 2nd Attempt - 03/07/08 02:42 AM
Sorry folks my original post got zapped off the Active Rain system.  It is out there in cyberspace!  It was either zapped by the Menehunes (tiny mischievous Hawaiian characters, similar to Leprechauns) or I bumped the wrong key falling asleep at the computer.  Don't know what happened, so I am trying it again.  If you had previously sent me your pick to be featured here, please resend it.

This is a topic that comes up from time to time here on Active Rain.
Many times we write a post that we feel is a home run hit, to have it get a few responses and not get … (51 comments)

active rain: What Will Our Blogs Look Like in a Year? - 02/12/08 12:04 AM
Many of us started blogging for the first time when we joined Active Rain.  A small percentage of the real estate professionals already had some blog experience and a few others spread out and added personal blogs shortly after.  A large majority of us had Active Rain and not much else.
In the last year blogging started to have an impact in my business as it did for many of us on Active Rain.  I started with no knowledge of blogs or blogging.  I thought it was something kids did and had little to no interest in it.  It is now … (40 comments)

active rain: Web Content and Blogging - 02/06/08 04:10 AM
In my post last night I wrote about how much discussion there was about blogging at the CRS Sell-a-bration in Hawaii.  Blogging a Topic at CRS Convention
I thought I would continue on the topic a little further.
I have spoken to dozens, probably hundreds of agents about the importance of blogging and Active Rain.  I have sent invitations to many, to have them not join or join and do very little with it.  Isn't that true of people in general?  You can show 100 people how to make more money and 2 or 3 will actually do the work required to … (30 comments)

active rain: Blogging a Topic at CRS Convention - 02/05/08 04:54 PM
Last week I attended the CRS Sell-a-bration in Waikiki.  It was a great event.  I came back with many ideas and a new energy to kick it to the next level.
Something different this year from last was the word BLOG was being tossed about.  Although not a featured sponsor and not getting promoted as a result, Active Rain was still mentioned by several of the presenters and was a regular topic at our lunch and dinner tables.  OK, I did start the conversation at the tables.  It was well received and a couple of more agents joined the Rain and I … (24 comments)

active rain: 2007 Active Rain Year in Review – A Hawaii REALTOR’S® Perspective - 01/01/08 07:51 AM

I was quite honored to be asked to participate in the 2007 year in review.  2007 is the first complete year for Active Rain.  It was a wonderful year and I look forward to being part of many more with Active Rain.
Many of us find this forum to be such a terrific way of sharing knowledge with other top professionals in the real estate industry and a great way for the public to find us and check us out.
Let's start with some of the 2007 events here on Active Rain that stood out in my mind:

active rain: Active Rain Gathering in Honolulu – January 28, 2008 - 12/29/07 05:21 AM

We have been talking about this gathering ever since we learned the CRS Sell-a-bration was coming to Hawaii.  WooHoo Sally (Celeste Cheeseman) has reserved the location so it is on!
We will be gathering at the Gordon Biersch micro brewery.  For those of you who know Sally and I you may see the humor.  Neither of us drink, making us good designated drivers.

active rain: Was 2007 Fun? It Was For Me. - 12/21/07 06:27 AM
As I get to the end of 2007 I felt I needed to reflect on this past year and get ready to hit the ground hard for 2008.
For 2007 it was a year with some highs and some lows.  I will be finishing the year below the aggressive goals I set for sales and personal.
The year started a little on the slow side.  I spent much of December in and out of the hospital at the end of 2006 and most of January and part of February recovering from a surgery and then some complications.  As you know what you work … (24 comments)
