1776 Flags are Flying High Above Newport Beach
Armed Forces Day in Newport Beach is one of an ongoing series of blog posts in my Weekend Quest category. This event takes place the weekend of May 17th to 19th in Newport Beach.
The Field of Honor: The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor celebrates Armed Forces Day with a Field of Honor.
It is situated in Castaway Park in Newport Beach which is truly a beautiful setting.
Here you walk along the bluffs above Newport Back Bay with strikingly beautiful views of the Harbor, Back Bay and the City of Newport Beach. This is a "natural park" with restored California native plants, it is an escape from the stress of urban living.
Flanking the walkways through the park and along the bluff are 1776 American Flags. It is a compelling sight, one not to be missed.

You can also dedicate a flag to a current or past member of the United States Military. The cost is $45 and you can bring a photo or memento to attach to the flag.
The Field of Honor opens on Friday May 17th at 9:00am. A dedication ceremony in held on Saturday May 18th and noon and the field of honor closes on Sunday, May 19, 2013.
Background: Armed Forces Day was created to replace separated Army, Navy and Air Force Days after the forces were unified under one department - the Department of Defense. The Marine Corps participates but continues with its own Marine Corps Day in November.
The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 1950. It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who serve the United States’ armed forces. As such it should be a more cheerful day than Memorial Day which is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
The largest Armed Forces Day celebration is held in the City of Torrance; this year will be the 54th Annual Armed Forces Day Celebration. Torrance continues to honors the original intent of Armed Forces Day; to give the civilian population increased awareness of the armed forces with a parade and military displays of aircraft and vehicles.
Make your trip on Sunday and add in the Balboa Island Art Walk, review my blog to learn more about the location and day's events.
