Goodbye Nelson-Vrooman GMAC - Hello Prudential Rand - 04/30/08 09:11 PM
After being in business for more than 50 years, Nelson-Vrooman GMAC is no more.  Prudential Rand bought them out as of today.  So officially I am now with Prudential Rand. Nelson-Vrooman was a wonderful brokerage and I am sad to see it go. It was started by Mary Nelson.  Bill Vrooman took over the brokerage upon Mary Nelson's death.  My late mother worked initially with Mary Nelson who (I believe) died of cancer in the late 1970s after that my family worked with Bill Vrooman and he became our family Realtor/broker.  He was my broker/agent for the listing of my mother's … (11 comments)

Lost & Found: Rescued kitten in need of new family..... - 04/26/08 04:17 AM
It was the night before my famous "tax extension experience." I was running late trying to get all my deduction ducks lined up in a row and was planning on a long night. But I needed to run a couple of errands. There was no food in the house - at least not for people and my car was running on gasoline vapors. I decided to get the gasoline first and I drove into the gas station bleary over all I had done and what was yet to come. As I was pumping my gasoline I noticed a small animal dodging … (12 comments)

Spring in Full Bloom – in Westchester, NY – (Part 2) - 04/21/08 04:30 PM
In my previous post, I had been commenting on how spring had been taking its sweet time in Westchester, NY – but what a difference a few days can make.  We had a couple of nice warm days in what has generally been a rather cool spring – and this encouraged the buds to bloom. Here are some pictures of the southern end of White Plains.  For those interested in local history, the Cherry trees along the road median of Mamaroneck Ave and Bloomingdale Rd. were the result of the diligent work of the White Plains Beautification Foundation.  The idea was … (19 comments)

Spring Has Been Taking It's Time......in Westchester, NY - (Part 1) - 04/20/08 04:13 AM
For the last few weeks, I've been taking photos here and there in Westchester - waiting and watching for the emergence of spring.  It seemed to be taking its sweet time this year.  It’s been quite cool and the buds were bravely popping up out of their hiding places.   Here are some random shots I took during my travels over the past 10 days…..culminating on April 16th when I took a walk at the Rockefeller Preserve in Sleepy Hollow, NY.  One could see how green the grass was becoming and how things were just about to “pop.”  That day was quite … (11 comments)

Pet-Friendly Coops: FSBO offered at $155,000 in the Bronxville Ridge Complex, Yonkers, NY 10708 - 04/19/08 04:23 AM
Here is a lovely top floor unit  in  a desirable pet-friendly complex in Yonkers, NY.  Just a short 6 minute walk to the Fleetwood Station on metro-north.  It is a 1 BR/1BA unit with an ample 850 Sq. ft. of living space.  It is close to transportation, highways and shopping. A Starbucks is scheduled to open on the block.  So the area is becoming increasingly upscale. The complex was built in 1925 in the desirable pre-war style.  The complex has lovely gardens and a newly paved parking lot. The unit itself has been renovated as Soho chic but takes into account … (9 comments)

Adventures in Filing for an Extension: How hard could this POSSIBLY be? - 04/18/08 12:59 AM
For various reasons, including a family illness I found that I needed to file for an extension this year. What could be simpler? How hard could this possibly be? Read on if you want to find out. I called my accountant on Monday – who was expecting that I would file for an extension. I realized suddenly that I was missing significant deductions and although the time was a concern, we agreed that I should get as many deductions as I could together so that I wouldn’t have to overpay and that I would drop everything off the next morning.

Animal Humor: How many dogs does it take to screw in a lightbulb??? - 04/11/08 12:29 AM
Here is the next installment on my series of animal (pet) humor. Once again, I do not know who was responsible for this list so I will just present it and add one more breed of dog to the list..the Siberian Husky. Since I have two of them, I feel it is an appropriate addition. For those who have dog breeds not mentioned here - try adding your own response. Let's have some fun!

The City Never Sleeps – I’m talking about WHITE PLAINS, NY! - 04/09/08 04:50 AM
Buyers from  New York City are forever asking me if there is any nightlife in Westchester? And the answer is YES THERE IS!Downtown White Plains is bustling 24/7 these days and for those who enjoy the active night life of New York City, having such a hub near at hand makes the adjustment to more sedate suburban living far more enjoyable.  I will not try to compare what White Plains has to offer to Broadway and the Metropolitan Opera House. In the end, there is only ONE Manhattan, but the amenities of that particular city are just minutes away by train.  … (10 comments)

This Hawk Tells You why Real Estate is Truly a LOCAL BUSINESS..... - 04/08/08 03:25 AM
The picture of that hawk was taken by yours truly one morning. I had just let out the dogs into my back yard (yes its fenced) while I started making my essential morning brew when I noticed that Buddy barking at something and looking UP....I peered out the kitchen window into the back and looked in his direction and saw a very large hawk sitting in my neighbor's tree peering imperiously at the three dogs below. I've seen hawks in those trees before, either on my property with m neighbors, but was never able to capture the image. I grabbed my … (18 comments)

Things to Do & See in Westchester: Early Spring Walk at the Rockefeller Preserve - 04/06/08 01:04 AM
It was a beautiful sunny day on Wednesday, and I was able to get away early - so I decided to take Jade and Tundra to the Rockefeller Preserve in Sleepy Hollow, NY. The Preserve is well known as an "important bird area" and for its working farm. Tundra, being brought home towards the end of July last summer as a small pup - was only introduced to the preserve towards the end of December. So this was one of the first time she encountered a brand new animal called the COW! We were all walking along very happily when suddenly … (6 comments)
