tarrytown: Fotos On The Fly - Sights of the Season - Winter tree in a winter sky... - 12/17/13 03:24 AM
Sometimes the sights of the season reflect the cold of winter.  We are now near the solstice so the trees are all bare  and the sun sets early. I took this photo today just as the sun was starting to set.  The cloud cover over the horizon was thick and the cause of the darkness.  It just looked so dramatic against the bare tree, that I had to shoot it.  Yesterday we had a rather large snowstorm, but the temperature increase had melted the snow off the tree tops and all that was left were the bare branches.

Hello everyone, this is the longest absence from my blog that I have had since I began it in late 2008.  A brief illness kept me from writing.  I am pleased to say that I am now back at work and just fine.
The Saint Patricks Day celebrations begin in earnest this weekend in lower Westchester.  So I thought I would  come back to my blog with some wearing of the green!
White Plains NY: The White Plains 15th annual St. Patricks Day Parade begins at 12 noon – Saturday March 10  The parade begins at  12 noon at the intersection … (7 comments)

tarrytown: Fotos on the fly – Stormy weather in Tarrytown NY - 10/04/11 05:20 PM
A brief bout of flu has kept me from blogging.  But a few days ago I mentioned how stormy the weather has been.  Well sometimes stormy skies can have an eerie beauty about them.  So when I saw this kind of surreal light over a cloudy sky along the Tarrytown lakes – I stopped my car and took a couple of photos.  Here is one of them.  You really see the clouds almost rolling in and the sun TRYING to peak through.

tarrytown: Calendar of Events for Lower Westchester Oct. 1-7 2010 - 10/01/10 09:05 AM

Well, with the storm moving through – we should wash away the Indian Summer and bring in some cool fall air.  Westchester events are changing with the season.  The fall season is now starting to head into full gear.  My post on Halloween events from Historic Hudson Valley shows that the season is getting active with the sleepy days of summer well behind us.  It also caused  a delay in posting  this calendar because there was so much to present.
So the Westchester events calendar is once again up for your convenience.  There are plenty of Westchester County events to … (5 comments)

Last year I wrote a post about the 4th of July events in Lower Westchester and it was a huge success.  I even had people calling me for directions.  Although going to the city is great – the Westchester to NYC commute can be painful on a busy holiday. And there really isn’t any need -there is plenty to do right here in Westchester.  Soooooo….here’s the list for 2010.

tarrytown: The Tarrytown Lakes - A One Mile Walking Trail - Tarrytown, NY 10591 - 05/24/08 02:51 PM
Early this evening I took  Jade and Tundra on a trail that I don't take very often...The Tarrytown Lakes.  It's a short flat trail perfect for a casual stroll or vigorous walk.  It is paved and many local residents bike, walk or job this trail quite frequently.  It appears to be a favorite for joggers as the hills are minimal. The walk begins (or ends) at Saw Mill Road just off the Saw Mill River Parkway and ends (or begins) right at the edge of the Marymount College entrence.  It is a quiet walk where you don't hear the whiz of … (1 comments)

tarrytown: Certioraris – a Taxing Situation for New York Homeowners - or Why Jerome Hellerstein’s image is secretly being burned in effigy by almost every elected official in New York….. - 03/20/08 06:32 PM
Bear with me…this one is complicated, but doubtless there are many homeowners in New York who are hearing about certiorari appeals and how it is impacting their property taxes. I thought that it might be nice to explain in simple English what all the fuss is about and why your $#%*ing property taxes keep going up in ever larger increments. Call it my good deed of the day. If this isn’t easy reading – rest assured it was equally challenging to write.
The short story:
The short story is that successful certiorari appeals – the state-wide legal process by which commercial … (9 comments)

tarrytown: Things to do & See in Westchester: Third Fridays in Tarrytown, NY 10591 - 02/21/08 02:09 PM
The third Friday of every month is a busy day if you are merchant in Tarrytown,  NY. That’s because the village and merchants in conjunction with Chamber of Commerce and other supporters bring a special evening of shopping, dining and entertainment to the public every third Friday of each month from 5-9 PM. Over the past year, since I have been bringing my two huskies to the dog park at Kingsland Point Dog Park, I had been hearing a great deal about  Tarrytown (and Sleepy Hollow’s) “Third Fridays.” So this month I decided to go there myself for an hour or … (7 comments)

tarrytown: Locals, Landowners and Lawsuits ….Oh My! (The Tale of Lighthouse Landing, Sleepy Hollow, NY 10591) - 12/19/07 06:23 AM
Lighthouse Landing – the proposed development  in question located on roughly 100 acres of prime real estate along the Hudson River in Westchester County. The site features breathtaking river views including that of the Kingsland Point Light House and the Tappan Zee Bridge. The site is also full of lead contamination from the GM plant that occupied the area from 1899 to 1996.  It is also the focal point of two lawsuits, one filed and one threatened.
When GM left Sleepy Hollow it left behind prime real estate that was badly contaminated.  What to do with this potentially marvelous site has … (3 comments)

tarrytown: Bark & Meow of Tarrytown, NY - 11/22/07 09:41 PM
For pet-lovers everywhere, here is a wonderful upscale pet store that is on every well-dressed pets list.  Bark & Meow has a wonderful assortment of  items for almost every need.  I was introduced to pet –blinkers (mentioned on a previous blog) at this store.  I’ve bought several adjustable collars for my three dogs.  Tundra is now on her second collar.  I also bought  a couple of terrific 6-foot leashes that are excellent for training purposes.  The assortment is amazing.  They even have “political sweatshirts” for your pet to sport his or her political preferences…One thing they have which I tend not … (3 comments)

tarrytown: Coffee Labs: Pet Friendly Gourmet Coffee in Tarrytown, NY 10591 - 11/22/07 07:31 PM
The Coffee Labs is conveniently located on Main Street right off North Broadway (Route 9.)  When people ask local residents why they don’t have a Starbucks, the response is “We don’t need one, we already have the best coffee in Westchester!” And they will point the visitor in the direction of the Coffee Labs.  Inn fact, if Coffee Labs every decides to franchise,  Starbucks should watch its step.  Coffee Labs has a quality and style that really challenges the status quo.  Having a Cuban background on one side of my family, I can safely say that I am a coffee snob … (0 comments)

tarrytown: The Tarrytown Music Hall, Tarrytown, NY 10591 - 11/22/07 06:42 PM
The Tarrytown Music Hall was built in 1885 and is the oldest operating theater in Westchester County. Located on 13 Main Street right off of North Broadway (Route 9) it is conveniently located in the center of town.  Originally it was a venue for many varieties of entertainment. It started showing silent movies in 1901 and from the 1930s – 1970s the Music Hall was used exclusively as a  movie theater.  In the 1980s,  the Friends of Mozartina – a not-for-profit group purchased  the Music Hall and have successfully preserved it  as an historic landmark while restoring it as a venue … (1 comments)

tarrytown: Pet Blinkers - See your Dog no Matter How Dark it Gets! - 11/05/07 07:50 PM
Where did you get that? I asked  Susan, the owner of two great dogs Tuco and Katie.  She had just turned on her dog’s new “pet blinkers.”  With a simple turn, the blinkers turned on and lit up the dusk sky looking something like the blinking lights of a Christmas tree – only much stronger.  We were talking with each other at the Kingsland Point Park in Sleepy Hollow, NY.  I had seen reflectors on dog collars and many other gimmicks that were supposed to help illuminate your pet at night, but none worked so well as pet blinkers. As the … (10 comments)

tarrytown: Things to Do & See in Westchester: Halloween and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow: - 10/30/07 08:27 AM
Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween without at least giving a nod and a drive-by to Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow – the location being the inspiration for Washington Irving’s famous tale “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Although part of different townships, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow are closely associated  both geographically  and by history. Washington Irving’s Estate, Sunnyside is located in Tarrytown, while Philipsburg Manor, the Old Dutch Church, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and the Headless Horseman Bridge are located in Sleepy Hollow.  An 18-foot statue of Ichabod Crane being chased by the Headless Horseman was erected in Sleepy Hollow on Halloween morning  2006.  So … (4 comments)
