tarrytown ny: Stormy Weather...The Hudson River during a tornado watch... - 10/17/13 04:50 PM

A little over a week ago Westchester was having one of its "climate change moments.  I was on the road playing fast and loose with a tornado watch as a line of storms approached  from the west.   I kept an eye on the weather but thought I had a bit of time before the worst of the front moved through.  So I decided to go down to the RiverWalk in Tarrytown and see the progress on the new Tappan Zee Bridge.
That was all well and good,  but perhaps not the smartest move in the world for someone who … (2 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos On The Fly - Happy 4th of July - Fireworks from Tarrytown & Sleepy Hollow NY - 07/05/13 07:47 AM
Fireworks are really fun to photograph, if you know what you are doing.  Personally, I love taking photos of fireworks on the water because you get the added benefit of the water reflection which seems to make them extra special.  Sister villages Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow joined forces once again to create a wonderful display on the Hudson River right next door to Lighthouse Landing.

I managed to get there about 2 hours ahead of the main event.  I decided to work from the vantage point of the River Walk  on the Tarrytown just south of Sleepy Hollow.  I  was … (15 comments)

tarrytown ny: The "New" Tappan Zee Bridge - Three designs released... - 12/06/12 02:05 AM
The photo above is a scene that will be history in a fairly short amount of time.  I took it of the “old” or “current” Tappan Zee Bridge from the River Walk right at the border of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.  For those who are interested, the Hudson Harbor complex was slightly south and to the left of the shot.
In any case, three designs for the new Tappan Zee Bridge were just released for public consumption.  They are are very different from the original bridge design and will change the landscape forever.  You can view them at this link.  Behind … (9 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos On the Fly: The storm comes rolling in….Tarrytown NY - 09/16/12 01:38 PM

One thing I keep hearing over and over again when I read about how people get great photos is simply – ALWAYS HAVE A CAMERA AVAILABLE!  Well, I really have to agree on that one.  On Sat., Sept 8, we had a big storm moving in.  I knew it was coming, but thought I had a while. In fact, I had a quiet evening at home mapped out rather than taking to the road in what was supposed to be severe weather.  The iPad was charged up as was the phone in case of a blackout.  But I was … (6 comments)

tarrytown ny: Update on Hudson Harbor – Tarrytown NY - 09/04/12 06:38 PM
ptember 5th, 2012 by Ruthmarie Hicks Topics: Historic Hudson Valley, Pet-Friendly Condos, Tarrytown, Walkable Neighborhoods in Westchester Lookout Building - Hudson Harbor
Over the past couple of years, I have been tracking the progress of Hudson Harbor  which is located right on the Hudson River against a major portion of the Westchester’s Hudson River Walk.   This development is a combination of luxury townhomes as well as condominium flats. Interspersed between the town homes will sit a complete community including shops and dining – creating  complete mini-community on the Hudson River.  Included in this package is a complete fitness center, a large out door pool … (2 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos on the fly - Sailing on the Hudson River at sunset…. - 07/20/12 06:57 PM
Anyone living on the eastern portion of the Hudson River will attest to the fact that there is nothing quite like a sunset over the water.   The light reflects off the water - even the choppy water of the Hudson - to create a spectacular display every single night.  There are some seasonal differences.  The pink hues seen in this picture are pretty characteristic of the summer months.  The people in that sail boat were lucky enough to have a front row seat....

tarrytown ny: Fotos On The Fly – Sunset on the Hudson from Tarrytown - 07/15/12 05:53 PM
s: Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, Things to do and see in Westchester The following is an early experiment in HDR photography to take advantage of the clouds and the color that you see at sunset.  Since HDR and cloud cover, go together like ham and eggs, I decided to  give it a try.  The photo is taken at three exposures and then layerd through an algorithm.  The boats were lined up in the water for the fireworks on the 4th of July.   They were situated to take advantage of the shows that were happening on BOTH sides of the river.  Irvington and Tarrytown on … (6 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos On The Fly – Tarrytown – Sleepy Hollow Fireworks… - 07/06/12 06:37 PM

Here’s hoping that everyone had a wonderful Independence Day.  I had a great time with my camera this year.  In the end, I ended up taking photos at two fireworks events.  The first was at the Kensico Dam in Valhalla.  This was a free event that boasted some 20,000 guests.  The place was packed, but I got there early enough to get a reasonably good spot for me and my camera…

More on that later.  The photo above was taken on July 4 2012 in Tarrytown.  The display took place in Tarrytown’s “sister village”  Sleepy Hollow.  Planting … (6 comments)

tarrytown ny: Tarrytown NY – 3rd Friday – Pet Parade… - 06/15/12 04:55 PM
Every June Tarrytown NY has a Pet Parade as part of the festivities on its famous 3rd Friday events.    This year was no different and I will have more on the 3rd Friday generally, but in the meantime, here are a few canine portraits that I managed to obtain while balancing one of my own dogs on a leash along with a camera.

This first one is my favorite – Big Meets Small.   Large dogs are always so tolerant of little ones.  And this spunky little dog was ready to give big Bear a run for his … (2 comments)

tarrytown ny: The Watercooler of Tarrytown is one year young – and celebrated with a speakeasy party… - 06/10/12 04:53 PM
Last night I went to a speakeasy.  I had never really been to one before.   Jenifer Ross threw a real rag-time flapper party in celebration of the first anniversary of the Watercooler.  The Watercooler is a chic, hip office space for those who work independently but want an office to go to.   Its been quite a success and has caused quite a  stir in the river town area.
The speakeasy was terrific.  Many came in costume and from the Mary Pickford punch (spiked with rum) to the piano music, the Marx Brothers movies and the poker game that went on … (2 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos On the Fly – Marymount College Dome - 06/03/12 04:58 PM
I was able to snap this shot of the Marymount “dome” early this afternoon while driving around the Tarrytown Lakes.  The dome is something of a landmark for the area and although the college campus has changed hands twice, the original campus buildings remain.   Even though I pass by the building several times a week, I’ve never been able to get  that great capture of the dome.  Not that I haven’t tried before.  But I never seemed to have the right angle on a clear day.  So here it is – at long last.

tarrytown ny: The Watercooler is a cool place to be… - 06/01/12 04:21 PM
The Watercooler at 21 North Broadway in Tarrytown NY, is a new hotspot for independent professionals as well as those who find themselves working from home.   It is the brainchild of Jennifer Ross who made Tarrytown’s famous 3rd Friday the success that it has become today.  Jennifer has a wonderful outgoing personality that helps create the warm, friendly and unique environment that you find when you walk into the Watercooler. She never does anything half way – and it shows.
Located in the heart of the historic village of Tarrytown, the Watercooler offers professionals a space in which to … (9 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos on the Fly: The Tappan Zee Bridge on a Cloudy Night… - 05/05/12 04:47 PM
Early this evening I went in search of photos for a perigee moon.  Of course it was the optimist in me that actually made me believe that with all this cloud cover there might be a picture to take.   But alas, the moon could not been seen through the clouds.  In the end, I wound up on the Hudson River Walk in Tarrytown.   I thought it was a logical place to practice night photography since I know it really  well.  Besides, lately I’ve been obsessed with shooting as many  pictures of the Tappan Zee Bridge as I can – … (16 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos on the Fly: Perigee “Super Moon” – A Preview - 05/04/12 01:53 PM
OK – so I admit that my low-light photography skills need some help – but tomorrow’s full Moon will be a “super Moon”.   Technically – its called a “perigee moon”.  Full moons vary in size because the moon has an elliptical orbit around the earth. When the moon’s orbit is at perigee it is 50,000 km closer to the earth  than when it is furthest from the the earth (apogee moon).
Anyway, the moon was almost full early this evening just before 8 PM.  and very bright in spite of the hazy sky.   I was able to take this … (9 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos on the fly: The Hudson River at Dusk – Tarrytown NY - 04/27/12 11:12 PM
I admit to having a real love of the river towns.  Don’t get me wrong – I love the Sound Shore area as well, but there is a certain wildness and weathered beauty to the western portion of the county.  I was on the Hudson River walk near dusk on a stormy night – or really a pre-stormy night last week.
Lately I have been taking a lot of photos of the Hudson and Tappan Zee Bridge…probably because I know that the view will be forever changed as soon as work begins on a new bridge.  This picture from the Marina … (10 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos on the fly: Tarrytown NY spring blossoms - 04/23/12 07:33 AM
As the soaking rains of Sunday showed us – spring blossoms can be here today, gone tomorrow.  So I was out taking a lot of photos last week.  So bring on the backlog!   I haven’t even been able to sort through them all. While shopping in Tarrytown, NY I took a shortcut.  When I saw this Wisteria trained to grow around a wraparound porch – I stopped my car and grabbed the camera.
It really looked like something from a bygone era where people sat outside on the porch at night and enjoyed a glass of lemonade.  Here are two … (10 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos on the Fly: Tarrytown Victorians & Blossoms…. - 04/13/12 02:08 PM
Over the past few months I’ve been working to improve my photographic skills.  So I will be posting more photos of Westchester.  As previously noted in post about the importance of the MLS listing –  good photography is like crack cocaine for home buyers, so I consider this to be an integral part of what I do for a living.
These were taking a few days ago on a beautiful but brisk spring day.  I was in Tarrytown NY – one of the prettiest villages in Westchester – if not the country.  Sometimes spring blossoms are just uplifting.  They give us … (11 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos on the Fly – NYC Skyline from Hudson Harbor – Tarrytown NY - 01/11/12 05:33 PM
One of the most exciting new construction developments is Hudson Harbor – Tarrytown NY.   I’m not normally a big fan of modern architecture, but I have to say that I really love the construction of this complex with its use of fieldstone and old wood beams.  They made it look like Stone Barns which is quite an accomplishment.  But what really makes its special are the views.
So after we saw the development, I went for a walk on the RiverWalk that runs right behind the complex.  (The complex – now in Phase II is right on the river.) and … (12 comments)

tarrytown ny: December’s Season of Celebrations & Sharing - Christmas Eve Service at Union Church - Pocantico Hills - 12/22/11 06:02 PM

Union Church of Pocantico Hills has a rich history.  Part of the Historic Hudson Valley  – the church has is closely associated with the Rockefeller family.  It is also very famous for its stained glass windows  by Matisse and Chagall.   From the outside, the church is a chapel-sized field stone structure. Something of a classic Tudor.  But the interior windows are simply breathtaking.  The rose window by Matisse, was his last work of art.   The Chagall windows came later.  All were commissioned by the Rockefellers  as memorials to family members.
The Christmas Eve services are a way for families … (3 comments)

tarrytown ny: Fotos on the fly… The lights of the season – Tarrytown NY - 12/15/11 03:22 PM
Sometimes its just nice to pause and enjoy the season.  I was busy today – running around like crazy.   But at dusk I saw a display that I really loved.  This isn’t one of those over-the top displays.  It has charm and grace.  Not too much, not too little.  Its interesting because this particular display is at the steps of a church.  Nevertheless, it has more of a holiday feel, and at least to my mind, the religious overtones are missing.  Still it captures the spirit of giving and conveys a feeling of warmth and the spirit of giving.  Something sorely … (6 comments)
