Home Inspections Help You Avoid Unpleasant Surprises
A good home inspection is an objective, top-to-bottom examination of a home and everything that comes with it. The standard inspection report includes a review of the home's heating and air-conditioning systems;
plumbing and wiring; roof, attic, walls, ceilings, floors, windows, doors, foundation (structural & mechanical)
It is becoming common practice now for both the "seller" and "buyer" and "new home phase construction" to be evaluated by an Advanced Inspector

New Hospital Coming to San Antonio Southside Means Jobs..Homes..Business Expansion

GREAT NEWS FOR SAN ANTONIO TEXAS

<> What does this mean for San Antonio Southside....JOBS....HOUSING....SHOPPING = EXPANSION

A deal three years in the making will put a $100 million hospital project at the heart of Brooks City-Base, where it will be the largest tenant.

Baptist Health System purchased 28 acres to build a hospital and two office buildings that Brooks development officials hope will turn a large part of the former Air Force base into medical and biotech magnet that will reinvent the South Side.

Southeast Baptist Hospital at Brooks City-Base and two accompanying medical office buildings will represent hundreds of medical jobs and draw more medical businesses in the future.

"This project with Baptist is going to redefine the South Side.

Brooks City-Base is selling and leasing parts of the 1,400-acre former military base as the Air Force moves out through 2011. DPT Laboratories has a major research facility there with nearly 150 employees.

What does this mean for San Antonio Southside....JOBS....HOUSING....SHOPPING = EXPANSION

Now the work begins...Baptist will now begin the process of researching how many rooms and staff are needed. You will see businesses and housing begin to grow in this area

Prevent Kitchen Water Damage

                                                                     This You Can Do Yourself

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO PREVENT WATER DAMAGE

CHECK THESE AREAS FOR WATER LEAKAGE FREQUENTLY

WATER DAMAGE IN THE KITCHEN IS COSTLY TO REPAIR IF NOT CAUGHT EARLY

The kitchen is often neglected even though it is often cleaned. Warning signs of excess moisture and impending water damage are overlooked.

* Inspecting the following moisture sources will help in preventing damage where it is likely to happen. The following guidelines will help you keep your kitchen in good condition and to prevent damages caused by the refrigerator, the dishwasher and the sink and countertop. rremember to do them every few months.

Refrigerator

The area behind the refrigerator is hardly ever inspected because it is relatively hard to reach. Inspecting this area will reduce the chance for water problems. Water behind the refrigerator is a sign. Do not ignore it, fix immediately or hire an appliance technician. If you detect mold growth, clean it immediately. Locate the moisture and fix it. If you have an icemaker, check the hose to make sure it is sealed and attached to the water supply.

Sink and Countertop

The sink and countertop are highly watered areas in the house. Check regularly under the sink and remove the trash can and other stored items to search for leaks. A drip in the trap under the sink means drain problems and must be repaired IMMEDIATELY. Look around the sink, slow draining pipes indicate a blocked drain. A dripping faucet must be repaired promptly. Pay attention to the countertop. If tiles are cracked or grout is missing, fix it to prevent water from pervading. Stained walls and floors around pipes indicate an internal leak that must be fixed to prevent additional damage.

Dishwasher

If the dishwasher doesn't empty after use, the main filter may be blocked and must be released promptly. When the sink overflows, it is usually due to back-ups. This problem usually occurs when the drain line is clogged. Clean the drain line regularly. Look under the base of the dishwasher for leaks. If you find any leaks, there could be an unsealed joint or a damaged hose. Check the connection and fix as needed. Check the dishwasher hose under the sink for signs of leakage and fix if necessary. Consider installing steel-braided hoses on appliances such as the dishwasher.

Braunfels.

Here is a little informaton on The Scooter Store and just one instance how they have assisted people in need of mobility and independence.

Our insurance premiums are going down, down, down. Here are a few comments if you live in the area or thinking about moving to this area.

New Schools, Shopping Centers, and now Fire Station Means Growth!

Canyon Lake firefighters and emergency medical personnel soon will have another home away from home.

Builders broke ground Wednesday on a new central station for Emergency Services District No. 3 at the intersection of Scissortail and Dove streets in Canyon City. The two-story, roughly 14,000-square foot facility will cost about $2.4 million to build, and is slated to open next year.

"A new fire station in the Canyon Lake area is something that hasn't happened in decades.

More than 10 new firefighters will be welcomed into the department through 2009, so as the station at Scissortail and Dove begins to materialize, "we'll hire people first, train them for a year, and when it's finished, they'll go the station.

The new facility's construction and operating costs are funded by a tax-rate increase approved by voters last May of 2007. "Our voters generously approved a tax increase in Comal County." In return, emergency personnel have helped knock the area's Insurance Service Office ratings down to some of the lowest in the nation, meaning homeowners can save between 15 and 50 percent on their yearly premiums. The district is already scoping out land for additional fire stations.

According to an annual report from ESD3, its directors have begun planning for satellite stations on Island View, in the Hancock area, near Farm-to-Market 306 and Purgatory Road, and in the vicinity of a upcoming new subdivision near Hwy. 46 and Cranes Mill Road.

Fourth of July Fireworks Not To Be Sold for Comal County

<fontcolor> <fontsize> FIREWORKS ONLY IN DESIGNATED AREA FOR COMAL COUNTY

Here is a summary of an article that was just published. "Exploding fireworks on July 4th is a celebration of independence. The Comal County drought measurement now in the highest stage of dryness. The risk from a grass fire that easily could get out-of-control and threaten homes, livestock and, above all, human life, is not a risk worth taking.

Fireworks already are banned by municipal ordinance in the City of New Braunfels, meaning that no one can buy, sell, transport or discharge fireworks in the municipality at any time.

Designated Area:
Fortunately for area residents, the Landa Park Fourth of July Fireworks display will provide an opportunity to enjoy flashy fireworks under the control of pyrotechnic professionals.

Run Your Car On Water?

My Question - If it is this simple why can't our auto makers convert? They would make a fortune and still honor the warranty.

I've been hearing about this on one of our local radio stations that I listen to on Saturdays when I'm in and out. I thought I would check out this information to make sure I was hearing correctly. Obvarious you hear lots of things these days with the price of fuel so high. This is a website that I found that helped me better understand what they were talking about.

Now, I wouldn't run out and try this unless you do allot of research and investigation. I would think this would no longer secure your auto warranty.

Review of "Run Your Car with Water" .com

Saturday Morning Surprise

It Finally Happened!

For several days now we could "smell" this lilttle guy or gal. You didn't need to see them but definitely had come for a visit. Yea! The Odor.

As I raised the garage door (you know the rest of the story). Fortunately he ran one way and I the other but he raised his tail and marked his spot.

Here are some tips for deoderizing after the episode.

== Removing skunk odor ==

You will need to break down or dissolve the oil in skunk scent.

Inside house:

1. wash affected wall, floor, etc. areas with water containing either chlorine bleach or vinegar (acetic acid) or

2. Use a commercial odor-removing compound such as:

"Skunk-off" aerosol; get through Vet Clinic, or catalog of dog supplies through dog kennel or pet shop.

"Nil-Odor" made by Dow Chemical; follow directions and put couple drops in water, and put on furnace filter to circulate air through; can put on dogs as directed.

"Odor-Away" either liquid (use few drops) or aerosol.

Rexall "C-D Deodorant" aerosol, can spray furnishings, drapes, etc.

These odor-removers act to break down the oil and so remove the odor or neutralize it.

3. Spraying with aerosol or putting drops around will neutralize odor in air generally; may still smell for awhile as you put nose right down in drapes, carpets, etc. but will gradually dissipate.

Outside house--on bare wood, concrete, soil: Get chlorinated lime water at drug store, or mix 1 cup agricultural lime in 1 gallon chlorine bleach and put on areas. BE VERY CAREFUL TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS - don't get on skin, clothing, etc as it will burn (is a caustic solution), and will also burn grass or other vegetation.

On clothes: Launder in cool or barely lukewarm water with lots of heavy, built laundry detergent, plus a degreaser and some water conditioner (like Calgon) if water is hard. Don't use very warm or hot water as oil will be released in steam and odor will come up out of tub.

[Info from the Home Maintenance And Repair Database at the Michigan State University website]

More tips from FAQ Farmers:

Trying using vinegar first.

Soak in tomato sauce.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_remove_skunk_odor

Someday I'll have t write a blog telling the story of how I met up with a whole family of skunks when I was doing my inspection. WOW! It was a day I'll never forget.

100 Degree Texas Weather

Judi Morgan prompted this blog so here goes...I know I have posted similiar blogs but it's worth another try. Judi mentioned she had shown several houses, one with A/C and the others without. In this Texas heat A/C makes a difference.

*Picture yourself walking into a 90-100 degree house, at 1:30 in the afternoon with no A/C. The next home that is 78 degrees with A /C, Which home would you spend more time evaluating and envisioning yourself living in? Judi said they really liked the one that had A/C.,,,, I wonder why?

Now, here are some tips to prepare for your inspectot the day he comes to inspect your home.

•1. Clean the House - Need I say more. Clean & Declutter

    2. Be On Time Because the Inspector Will Be

Sometimes home inspectors are early. If an inspector makes an appointment with you for 9:00 a.m., have the house ready for inspection at 8:30. It's also common for inspectors to start on the exterior of the home, so leave the shades down or drapes drawn until you are dressed.

    3. Leave the Utilities Connected- - - Thank You

The home inspector will need to turn on the stove, run the dishwasher, test the furnace and air conditioning, so leave the utilities on, especially if the house is vacant. It's impossible to check receptacles for grounding and reverse polarity if the power is turned off. Without utilities, the inspector will have to reschedule, which could delay the closing of your transaction and the removal of the buyer's home inspection contingency.

    4. Provide Workspace Around Furnace and Water Heaters (De Clutter)

Remove boxes, bookcases, furniture and anything else blocking access to your furnace, air conditioner and water heater. The inspector will need three to four feet of working space to inspect these items.

    5. Keep Pilot Lights Ignited

Many home inspectors will refuse to light pilot lights because they are not covered for that type of liability. If your pilot lights are not lit, then important items such as the water heater, gas stove or furnace will not be inspected and the buyer could delay closing until those inspections are completed.

    6. Provide Access to Attic and Garage

The inspector will need to get into your basement and / or attic as well, so keep a path cleared. Move boxes away from the walls. (clean and de-clutter).

    7. Leave Keys for Outbuildings & Electrical Boxes - Important

Leave the remote controls for your garage door opener or a key if the garage is unattached to the house. Unlock the covers for your sprinkler system and electrical box. Leave a key for exterior building access. If not, this means a return trip for the inspector and a possible reinspect cost for time and travel)

   8. Clear Away Brush from Exterior Inspection Points

In the summer, cut down dead tree branches and clear brush from the foundation. Move trash cans away from the house. (prepare the outside, just as important as the inside inspection).

  9. Provide Repair Documents...Helpful

Make available to the home inspector all invoices and documents regarding remodeling projects or new items such as a roof or furnace. If you've upgraded the electrical from ungrounded to grounded, installed a new dishwasher or repaired a leaky faucet, find the paperwork. It will give the buyer peace of mind to know those items were reinspected. (Keep all your paperwork in one place so you can easilyl locate) I recently did a home in the Dominion with many built in's in the kitchen, items you don't see in a normal home. The owner had all the paperwork available. Some items had not been used and they had lived in the home for a year; so we learned together. Thank goodness for the paperwork.

  10. Prepare to be Away for Three to Four Hours Depending On The Size of the Home

Often the buyer will accompany the home inspector, and buyers feel uncomfortable asking questions if the owner is present. Try to schedule a time for the inspection when you can be out of the house, and take the children with you. Crate your pets if you cannot remove them from the premises. (we don't want any surpirses, maybe a bird that may fly out the door or a cat run to the neighors).

11. Make sure the diswasher is empty and don't hide items in the oven or dishwasher. You'll be surprised some of the things I have found through the years.

12. Don't leave valuables, Example: jewelry laying around.

The inspector can not conduct the inspection without electricity and water; it will take several days to have these items turned on; therefore you can save time by not turning these items off.

I'm sure I could add additional items but these are a few that come to mind.

                                                                                    Thanks

The Pledge

This has bothered me for a few days now since I heard this the other evening when I was about to fall off to sleep. The news was over and Jay Leno program came on after the news. While I was snoozing and semi-asleep I heard him say let's go out on the street and do some Jay-Walking. The question posed seemed simple and straight forward to me, but was I ever surprised. Not one person could recite The Pledge of Allegiance.

People, something is wrong if you live in this country, educated in this country, and not be able to recite The Pledge of Allegiance. To my surprise one of the people he interviewed was a kindergarten teacher. ???

So here is the The Pledge of Allegiance and in your heart of hearts if you care for this great country of ours, please learn The Pledge of Allegiance, teach your children and take pride to have the opportunity to live in this great country.

Dog (Dawg) Day's of Summer

Keeping Cool This Summer! Take Care of Yourself & Your Pets!

The Dog Days of Summer Are Here. Everywhere we go we hear these terms:

It is going to be a scorcher today ?

Is this a summer heat wave?

What temperature do you set you're A/C? Be sure to also keep your doggy cool during this summer heat wave. Always have lots of cool, clean water.

Here are some tips to remember to protect yourself:

Summer Heat Precautions

During a heat wave the body has to work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. Excessive heat can result in serious health threats by pushing the human body beyond its limits. Young children, elderly people, and those who are sick or overweight are most at risk.

Measures for Preventing Heat Related Illnesses

NEVER leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.

Slow down, avoid strenuous activity.

Avoid too much sun.

Plan outdoor games and activities for early morning or evening.

Avoid extreme temperature changes.

Stay indoors as much as possible; use fans or air conditioners to cool the air.

Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing that will cover as much skin as possible.

Protect face and head by wearing a wide brimmed hat.

Drink plenty of fluids, even if you do not feel thirsty, and avoid alcoholic beverages.

Hot Weather Health Emergencies

Heat cramps: Painful spasms, mostly in legs and abdomen, usually the result of heavy exertion and heavy sweating.

Recognizing Heat Cramps
Painful spasms usually in the legs and abdominal muscles that may occur in association with strenuous activity.

What to do
Apply firm pressure to cramping muscles or gently massage to relieve spasms. Replace fluids. Consult your health care provider.

Heat exhaustion: Typically occurs when people exercise heavily or work in a hot, humid place where body fluids are lost through heavy sweating.

Recognizing Heat Exhaustion
Heavy sweating, weakness, cold, pale and clammy skin. Weak pulse. Fainting and vomiting possible.

What to do
Lie down in a cool place. Loosen clothing. Apply cool wet cloths. Fan or move person to air-conditioned place. Take sips of water. Consult your health care provider.

Heat stroke: A medical emergency- the body's temperature control system, which produces sweating to cool the body, stops working. Sunstroke: Another term for heat stroke.

Recognizing Heat Stroke
High body temperature (106+). Hot, dry skin. Rapid, strong pulse. Possible unconsciousness. Individual will likely not sweat.

What to do
Heat stroke is a severe medical emergency. Call 911 or emergency medical services or get the person to a hospital immediately. Move to a cooler environment. Try a cool bath or sponging to reduce body temperature. Use fans and/or air conditioners, to cool the body.

Questions from a Broker to me the Home Inspector

THERE IS SOMETHING HAPPENING IN TEXAS!

State of the Economy for New Braunfels, South to San Antonio and West toward Boerne.

I was just finishing a home inspection yesterday when I had a real estate broker call me from another state. We had a very interesting conversation. Many of his questions pertained to the New Braunfels, Canyon Lake, Wimberly area. Wanted to know how I estimated the sale of homes in this market. I told him the market is not as vibrant as last year, a little soft but still moving forward. He asked about statistics: population, schools, taxes, industry and the normal questions someone interested in the area would ask.

Fortunately my business as an inspector has been good. I do see more expensive homes being sold and from what I can gather these people have the money to purchase. Most of these people are moving here from other states and in some instances are paying cash.

It became apparent to me not only are individuals moving to this area but also some brokers from other areas. This tells me that people are watching us and very interested in our marketplace. If things are not going well in one area of the country pick up and move to a more active area.

Whom better can you get the true picture from...statistics, newspaper, friends, family and the guy in the trenches....your friendly Home Inspector. We ended our conversation by me saying, come on down to Texas where life is good, people are friendly and our economy is still healthy. Bring all your clients with you so we can sell them a home.

I asked him how he found me and he said through Active Rain.

                                                                    Thank you Active Rain!

What Causes Bloggers Block?

If I'm not getting enough sleep this may be why I feel like I have Bloggers Block. Give me your thoughts....

I read this article a few days ago. It went something like this:

Blogging, although it doesn't seem like a business; infact it is more than a business. Blogging is a lifestyle which you chose once you create your blog, and probably you didn't think about the consequences . Writing articles, blogging includes too many activities which can consume your energy and cause fatigue. Participating actively in social networks not only means writing articles, it means reading other posts and checking your statistics. This will consume your time plus your energy.

Has this happened to any of you? I want to write an interesting blog and share my thoughts and feelings with everyone, but also want to read other AR's blogs, but find it difficult to do both. I always try to repond to everyone that comments and always enjoy participating. Where do you draw the line?

I'm sleep deprived and need a break; is it the time change or am I just overworked?

Facts You Should Know If Your Are Boating, Swimming or Tubing at Canyon Lake or New Braunfels, Texas

Here are some important facts you should know before coming to Canyon Lake, Texas or New Braunfels, Texas. A Great Place to Have Fun and in order to stay safe please follow a few simple RULES.

Please check out to keep you and your family safe.

The Guadalupe and Comal rivers are fun places to be in the summertime. Just look at the thousands of residents and visitors who hit the water each weekend. For inland boaters, Canyon Lake provides a wide space to head out for water sports, fishing or just a good time.

State law requires that children under 13 must wear a personal floatation device on any vessel less than 26-feet long unless it is anchored or tied to the shore. All boats, including canoes and kayaks, must have personal flotation devices or life jackets for every person on board.

Tragically, anyone out on the water - whether floating in an inner tube, boating or swimming - is at constant risk from injury or drowning. Just like driving an automobile, the risks are multiplied when alcohol is involved.

Remember the following points when you are on the water:

· Wearing life jackets save lives.

· Designate a driver. Sober boating saves lives.

· Boater Education saves lives.

• Safe boats save lives.

Always respect others when out in public. Always respect people's property when out in public. This will add to having a fun filled and safe vacation.

Hurricane Season Begins June 1st...Dangers After The Storm

This is a NEWS BULLETIN posted today from CPSC
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 This looks like the calm before the storm

There are still some people that say they are going to "ride out" the hurricane or storm. I say "NO" have a plan to leave and don't return until you get the all clear. Don't take any chances.

Below is some information for consumers to include a plan for after the Storm

CPSC Urges Consumers to Prepare for Dangers After the Storm

WASHINGTON, D.C. - June 1st marks the start of hurricane season. As you put your hurricane plan in place to protect your family and your home, CPSC is urging consumers to include a plan for after the storm.

If a storm knocks out power, consumers who use portable gasoline generators to restore power can place themselves at risk for carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Only use portable generators outdoors, far away from the doors, windows and vents of indoor spaces. Generators should never be used indoors, including inside homes, garages, basements, crawlspaces and sheds.

The amount of CO from one generator is equivalent to hundreds of idling cars in a garage and can kill consumers in minutes. At least 65 people died from CO poisoning associated with portable generators in 2006.

CPSC also advises consumers to keep charcoal grills outside. Never use them indoors. Burning charcoal in an enclosed space can produce lethal levels of CO.

If flooding occurs after a storm, do not use gas or electrical appliances or equipment that has been submerged. The electrical components and safety controls may be damaged and burner parts may be plugged with debris, leading to a fire risk. Have fireplaces, furnaces, and other heating equipment inspected by a professional to make sure they are working properly.

It may also be good to have a prepared First Aid Kit

CPSC recommends that consumers install CO alarms in their homes as a line of defense against CO poisoning. Battery operated CO alarms or plug-in alarms with battery back-up add an important layer of protection in consumers' homes. Remember to replace CO alarm batteries annually.

For more information on protecting your family against CO poisoning, visit www.cpsc.gov/CPSCPUB/PUBS/464.pdf and www.cpsc.gov/CPSCPUB/PUBS/468.html

To see this release on CPSC's web site, please go to: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml08/08291.html

It is always a good idea to have extra food and water on hand. The links above will give you some very good information. Also, have a full tank of gas in your auto (even at the high price we have to pay).

Our Baby Barn Swallows Are Ready To Leave

Seeral weeks ago I mentioned to someone that a wind came up and blew the baby swallows right out the nest. A few days later the "mom" I think it was the same one was back again. Yes, more eggs, more sitting, and here are five new little eggs. Now this nest is a work of art, it is on a lip of a ledge about one inch wide and she worked for days building this nest. Too me she could have found a better and safer place to build this nest; but every year for the last three years a swallow comes and constructs this work of art.

Hope you enjoy our pictures.

The Mama Barn SwallowThe Mama Barn Swallow

This nest is a work of art!

There are six subspecies of Barn Swallow, which breed across the Northern Hemisphere. Four are strongly migratory. and their wintering grounds cover much of the Southern Hemisphere as far south as central Argentina, the Cape Province of South Africa, and northern Australia.[ Its huge range means that the Barn Swallow is not endangered, although there may be local population declines due to specific threats, such as the construction of an international airport near Durban.

The Barn Swallow is a bird of open country which normally uses man-made structures to breed and consequently has spread with human expansion. It builds a cup nest from mud pellets in barns or similar structures and feeds on insects caught in flight.

This species lives in close association with humans, and its insect-eating habits mean that it is tolerated by man; this acceptance was reinforced in the past by superstitions regarding the bird and its nest. There are frequent cultural references to the Barn Swallow in literary and religious works due to both its living in close proximity to humans and its conspicuous annual migration

Movies Under The Stars at The LBJ Ranch

The National Historical Park is having some fun events this summer. One highly recommended watching is "MOVIES UNDER THE STARS" AT THE LBJ RANCH airplane hanger. LBJ had converted the hanger into a theater where he frequently projected first-run movies for friends and family.

These bygone movies have been recreated on a professional screen. The Parks staff has selected some of LBJ's favorites. FREE for viewing will be June 21, 2008 "True-Grit, June 26, 2008 "Oliver" and on August 9th "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner".

Gather around 6:00, bring your own chair, blanket, picnic basket, mosquito repellant. The movies start at dark.

For a full list of what's planned: www.nps.gov/lyjo

The LBJ Ranch is a beautiful place to visit in the Texas Hill Country. Put this on your calendar for things to do this summer.

Summer Night In Texas! Under The Texas Stars Free Movies in The Texas Hill Country

Computers Can Do The Darnest Things

I know you will think I have lost my mind. This is not about Texas, Inspections, Real Estate, Bugs, Flowers or any of that stuff. A friend sent this to me today and someone sent it to him. I almost deleted it but thought what do I have to loose so I got up walked across the room and guess what?\\Now it's your turn.

This is the craziest thing I've seen in a long time.
For those of you in the 21st century (e.g. Blackberry
Owners), you'll need to look at this on a pc. You also
Have to get out of your seat and walk away (at least 6 feet or more)from your computer. People may think you're crazy.
But it's well worth it.

When you look at this picture in a
Closer look you see its Albert Einstein

But if you stand 15 feet away,
It will become Marilyn Monroe.

Give a try

IT MUST BE MAGIC?

Skip the pretzels: Starving may fend off jet lag ? Will this really work?

I thought if you would be going somewhere on that "bird bird" flying high in the sky you might want to read this review. My sister sent this article to me this morning since her husband is getting ready to go to Atlanta he has a severe problem with handling jet lag. I will give you the entire article to read; it may be worth trying sometime to see if it really works. I have a problem with jet lag and will try next time I fly. Thought I would pass on for your leisure reading.

Ceil

Skip the pretzels: starving may fend off jet lag By Julie Steenhuysen - Thu May 22, 12:57 PM PDT

Provided by: 73% of users found this article helpful.

Normally, the body's natural circadian clock in the brain dictates when to wake, eat and sleep, all in response to light. But it seems a second clock takes over when food is scarce, and manipulating this clock might help travelers adjust to new time zones, they said.

"A period of fasting with no food at all for about 16 hours is enough to engage this new clock," said Dr. Clifford Saper of Harvard Medical School, whose study appears in the journal Science.

He said a person from the United States traveling to Japan must adjust to a 11-hour time change.

"Because the body's clock can only shift a small amount each day, it takes the average person about a week to adjust to the new time zone. And, by then, it's often time to come home," Saper said in a statement.

Saper and colleagues knew that when food is scarce, animals are able to override their normal biological clock to improve their chances of finding food.

Studies have shown that mice fed only during the time when they normally sleep shift their body clocks to this new schedule. "They would be awake and alert and ready to go an hour or two before a meal was due to appear to have maximal chance of getting the food," Saper said in a telephone interview.

"This is built into the brain. The problem is, nobody knew how it worked," he said.

He and colleagues set out to find this mechanism. They used a group of mice that had been genetically engineered to lack a master gene called BMAL1 that regulates the body's clock. They put this gene into the shell of a hollowed-out virus that acted as a vector to deliver the gene only to brain cells they were interested in studying.

When they put it into a small region of the hypothalamus known as the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which serves as the body's primary clock, the mice adjusted to a light-based schedule for waking and sleeping, but not eating.

"If you don't wake them up they will starve to death," Saper said.

However, when they restored the gene only in a section of the hypothalamus called the dorsomedial nucleus, which helps organize waking and feeding schedules, the mice adjusted to the eating schedule, but not daylight.

Saper said when food is scarce, this second clock can override the body's primary clock. He said these same clock genes are known to be in all mammals, including humans.

While skipping meals ahead of a long flight or night shift has not been proven to work in humans, it may be worth a try.

San Antonio Spurs vs L.A. Lakers

Kobe Bryant vs The Spurs ... Kobe with his quest to be "top dog".

* The menu for tonite is "sandwich night" - kinda goes with our Game 1 Expectations - Sandwich in those Lakers from the basket so they won't make the two-pointers and sometimes three-pointers. Keep those "pointers" for Our Spurs.

* Each Sandwich Name Corresponds with a Nickname For The Lakers

  The Chicken Sandwich? (the chickens)

  The Cheese? (stinky cheese)

The Tuna? (flip-flop when they go cold)

  The Bologna (phony boloney)?

The Turkey (or should I say turkey's)

The Hamburger (The Hams)

The Hot Dogs (The Dogs)

If everyone would like to bring dips or chips to go with our sandwich, please feel free to do so. Maybe Ms. Judi can stop "screaming" and bring us a great dessert, Please! Maybe Dale and Ricki can bring some cool, refreshing drinks to go along with our sandwich. We will welcome whatever you bring and long as you join us for fun and games.

                                                                Thank You!
