hawaii: Maui Wind Energy Improvements Lower Electric Bills - 09/13/13 05:31 AM
For those of you who are in the market for a beautiful South Maui property but are concerned about energy costs, you'll be pleased to hear a recent bit of news from Maui Electric Co. (MECO). Thanks to improvements of their generator control systems and the full incorporation of the battery energy storage system at the Kaheawa Wind II farm, MECO is now using 91 percent of available wind energy compared to the 72 percent it was able to use before. This means better savings for customers.

hawaii: Hawaii Unemployment and Bankruptcy Claims Fall in January - 02/20/13 09:48 AM
 
 During the month of January, Hawaii unemployment claims fell by 20 percent and bankruptcy claims fell by 25 percent. These substantial changes are great news, especially the bankruptcies, which haven't been at such a low level since January of 2008, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Honolulu. There were 159 bankruptcy filings in January this year, as opposed to 212 filings during the same month last year. Year over year, Chapter 7 filings fell by 31.5 percent, while Chapter 13 filings fell by 4.3 percent. The Auwahi Wind project on Ulupalakua Ranch is officially online, as of last week Thursday. The ranch is located up the slopes of Haleakala from the real estate in South Maui that we represent. hawaii: Maui Hotel Occupancy Up and Rates Down - 12/28/12 07:16 AM
 

During the week that ended on December 14th, Hawaii hotel occupancy was up 7.5 percent compared to the same week last year. Hotels were 71.6 percent full. Average daily room rates went up 5 percent to $185. Those are the numbers for the state, but Maui itself had the largest increase in occupancy of any of the islands with a 17 percent jump compared to the same week last year. A surprising partnership has emerged on Maui, between the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center and Haleakala Waldorf School. The Honua'ula luxury golf community which was planned for Wailea has come up in the news recently, addressing the affordable housing units that were to be included and built before the project's other components. What does the Honua'ula project consist of, specifically? It includes 670 acres above the Wailea Resort in South Maui. About 370 acres or 55 percent of the site will be for residential use, single-family homes will comprise 260 acres, multi-family homes will include 110 acres. On September 30th, between 4-6pm, those with the best chili recipes will face off in whipping up the tastiest creation. The money generated will benefit Shriner's Hospitals for Children Patient Transportation Fund, which allows kids who are afflicted with fire related injuries to get the medical treatment and rehabilitation they need, regardless of what their family can afford. The Maui Rotary Club hosted the Oktoberfest fundraiser with proceeds going to the Rotary Clubs of Kihei-Wailea, Wailuku, 
and Upcountry Maui. The event was held at the King Kamehameha Golf Club. This lively event was a recreation of Germany's Oktoberfest and featured harvest themes with German-inspired pupus and beer. The event also features the Oompah band perform and bring zesty German style tunes. The Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB) recently raised $338,046 at the nonprofit Ke Alahele Education Fund benefit dinner and auction at the Grand Wailea. Tickets cost $150 each, and all 700 seats were sold out. The funds were raised for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs, and to help new high-tech companies on Maui. It was a wildly successful night.

When making a move to a new place finding a job and making a living is usually a major concern. Hawaii doesn't have the best economic reputation, perhaps because an isolated island economy is different than the contiguous states, but the numbers tell a different story. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Hawaii ranked 15th among the 50 states for lowest unemployment levels.

hawaii: Maui Home Prices Up in July - 08/17/12 04:27 PM
There's been a substantial change in Maui County home prices compared to the past couple of months. According to the Realtors Association of Maui, Maui County home prices were up by 25% in July. There were 71 sales in July 2012, compared to July 2011 where there were only 68 sales. According to RAM, the Maui real estate market's inventory is shrinking now that those REO and short sale properties are being brought up. Over the past year, the number of properties has fallen by 18-21%.

hawaii: South Maui Olowalu Town Project Approved - 08/10/12 03:54 AM
Maui County's General Plan Committee has recently approved the 1,500 home, 600 acre Olowalu Town Project. In addition to homes the project will also include 375,000 square feet of commercial space, parks, and a school. The project will be situated between the southwest-facing slopes of the West Maui Mountains and the Pacific shoreline, meaning that you will pass it on the way to and from Lahaina and Kaanapali via the Honoapiilani Highway. According to the Master Plan, the project will create 4,770 jobs during construction, and 1,000 long-term jobs when it's complete.

August is the month for dolphins and the Pacific Whale Foundation will be presenting several upcoming events and activities to entertain and educate. The Pacific Whale Foundation is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1980 to save the whales from extinction. Their mission today is to protect our oceans through science and advocacy. The Pacific Whale Foundation is an international organization and has ongoing studies in Hawaii, Australia, and Ecuador. The activities they have planned for the dolphin days include free talk on Maui County's wild dolphins, a wild dolphin sand sculpture contest, and a wild dolphin photo safari.

This week the University of Hawaii Maui College was host to the Hawaii Pacific Export Council's Export University training program. The purpose of this training is to connect local companies with larger international buyers. Last year's training session generate export sales of $699,610 via 68 participants. We're happy to announce some good news in the Maui County real estate market: Hawaii foreclosures have plunged by nearly half in the first six months of this year compared to the same period in 2011. According to RealtyTrac, Maui foreclosures have dropped by 47% in the first six months of this year compared to the first six months of 2011. A 47% drop is very good news for te Maui real estate market. Prices and sales were up in June for Maui homes and condos as well. Hopefully the market will continue on this great path.

Here in Hawaii community service is a very big part of the culture. Everyone wants to help out others, thus the term "aloha spirit". We also love helping out the community and are active members of the Kihei-Wailea Rotary Club. Maui is a small island and it's very nice to hear what the other chapters around the island are doing. Earlier this month the Rotary Club of Lahaina presented a total of $16,000 in much needed and well deserved scholarships to high school seniors, not only from Maui but also Molokai.
