fema: Flood Recovery Takes Time, a LOT of Time. - 12/06/19 11:26 AM
If your community were to suffer from a devastating flood how quick would you think it would take for full recovery and for future flood protection? If you are thinking a year or two you need some educating on the subject. The correct answer would more likely be TWO DECADES!

Minot Mayor Shaun Sipma and I visit about a couple of the components our City is currently dealing with in regards to the NDR (National Disaster Resilientsy)program. This program is very complicated and jumping through all the hoops HUD requires is a real eye opener.

fema: Flood Maps, If There Is Any Doubt Check & ReCheck - 07/21/17 12:38 PM

In Minot ND over the last week FEMA has been meeting with people and explaining the new (not yet official) flood maps that will be put into effect in about a year. It's causing panic, concern, and I believe misinformation. It's easy to see why when you look at the maps and consider the human nature to hear what people want to hear. Let me demonstrate with the following (actual) example.

The legend to the left is for my house which is just North of the top of the map (I had 5-1/2 feet of water on my main floor). It clearly … (19 comments)

fema: Attention Minot! Is FEMA Trying To Tell Us Something? - 01/13/17 12:24 PM

We received 43" of snow in a short amount of time and all the climatological experts have been telling us that it will have no bearing on spring run-off or flooding...
So why did FEMA send out thousands of brochures on flood insurance to local Realtors this week?
This is just SOME of the literature FEMA sent me this week. I/our Real Estate agency has never received information from FEMA in the past so I'm wondering if they are trying to tell us something.
If you would like to stop in and pick up information on FEMA and flood insurance stop in soon before it's gone.

fema: Get Involved When It Comes To Flood Insurance - 06/07/16 06:25 AM

There is current legislation regarding flood insurance that everyone should get involved with if there is ANY chance your home our your community may be flooded.
5 Years ago, nearly to the day, Canada sent flood waters down the Mouse/Souris river that they new would destroy thousands of US homes because they didn't want the flooding on their soil. The flood destroyed many communities and a fourth of Minot ND, population roughly 35,000 at the time.
To date flood insurance is only available through FEMA. FEMA is talking about rates as high as $60,000. A YEAR! You will be required to have it if you have a … (6 comments)

fema: MINOT REAL ESTATE 101, Was This House Flooded? - 04/07/15 04:25 AM

Was This House Flooded?
Oh no Sir, not THIS house...
Minot, N.D., flooded from the Souris River in June 2011" by Clay Church of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Believe it or not you could buy a home in this neighborhood and be told it was not flooded... with the blessing of the MLS.
How could this be? If one of the homes in this picture were torn down and a new house constructed, or if someone built a home on one the empty lots you see than the MLS says the house was not flooded.
OK, maybe that structure was not flooded but the lot was. … (10 comments)

fema: FEMA, Just Hang Up and Dial Again! - 09/02/11 01:34 AM

FEMA, Just Hang Up and Dial Again!

Having been, and currently am, a flood victim one piece of advice I'd like to pass on to help others keep their sanity is that when you are visiting with FEMA via the telephone it is OK to hang up and dial again. If at all possible I encourage you to go to a FEMA center in person and visit with a FEMA representative there.
A FEMA "Headquarters" was set up here within days of the disaster that destroyed 1/4 of the City of Minot ND. The people that come to these … (4 comments)
