Sand Castle Sculpture Competition

Saturday July 12, 2008 11:30 am to 4 pm

Every year Milford hosts it's annual Sand Castle Contest at Walnut Beach in Milford, CT. Walnut Beach is located in a section of Milford called, Devon.

Participants and spectators gather around just after high tide to enjoy this spectacular event. Anyone can participate. You must pre-register to be entered as an individual or as a team by age group. Simple rules to this contest. The main goal is to just have fun. Only beach materials may be used to create your masterpiece in the sand. Once the contest is over spectators and participants slowly watch the high tide reclaim the beach and their sculptures.

Milford Oyster Festival Shell Decorating Contest Awards

Annual Milford Oyster Festival, Inc. in conjunction with Coquille Catering is sponsoring an oyster shell decorating contest.

Camp judging will conclude in August with the top three winners in each age group from each camp going to the final city wide judging and display at the Oyster Decorating Booth at Milford Landing at the Annual Milford Oyster Festival on Saturday.

Final Judging will be provided by The Milford Fine Arts Council.
Prizes will be awarded at 6:45 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each age group. Prizes are $100 - $50 - $25 gift certificates, and ice cream coupons too!

Over 600 children at The Milford Recreation Department's Si,,er Playground Program will participate at Meadowside, JFK, Calf Pen, Live Oaks, Mathewson and Orange Avenue Elementary Schools. Camps will be provided with oyster shells and supplies to create their oyster work of art.

To get your Pearl Trail Map, just bring a bag of non-perishable food or a $2 donation for the Milford Food Bank down to the Downtown Milford Business Association (DMBA) information booth located at Lisman Landing. Follow the Pearl Trail and visit each shop to collect your free genuine cultured pearls. Once you complete your shopping stroll, you will have enough pearls to complete a necklace or bracelet.

Festival visitors have a choice of fun activities which range from entertainment for children, music, harbor canoe and kayak races, over 200 arts and crafts vendors from around the country exhibiting on the Milford Green, a classic car show and lots of food offered by local non-profit civic organizations. The Milford Oyster festival is the perfect event for many non-profit organizations to raise money. Stop by The Milford Green or The Milford Harbor. Shuttle buses are provided for free. Location: Milford Green

The 22nd annual New England Arts and Crafts Festival's Chalk of Fame competition is looking for chalk artists to use sidewalk blocks as their canvass this weekend on the Milford Green in Milford, CT.

The competition is 10:30 am to 2:30 pm Saturday (rain date is Sunday), with cash-prize winners will be announced at 3 pm!

The festival committe supplies red, white and blue chalk, and artists are encouraged to bring pastels and chalks of their choice.

Sidewalk sizes are 58-inches square and run across and diagonally on the Green.

Each square represents one entry, which can be either an individual artist or a small team, but all participants on the team must be in the same age category.

Entry fee is $5. A registration form can be downloaded by going to www.milfordarts.org, clicking on the 22nd annual New England Arts & Crafts Festival link, where complete rules are available.

Registration also can be done starting at 10 am the day of the competition at the MFAC booth.

The 22nd Annual New England Arts & Crafts Festival will take place Saturday July 5 and Sunday July 6 10 am to 5 pm on the Milord's downtown Green. There will be more than 150 fine art and craft exhibits, food court, music, theater, children's activities and live events. Folk group Blue Horizon will perfrom from 1 to 3pm Satuday, July 5. Annual sidewalk chalk contest will also take place on Saturday, July 5; Caricature artists, face painter and henna tatto artist, as well. Admission is FREE and parking is also FREE.

Cinnamon Pecan Twists

Cinnamon Pecan Twists

I LOVE THESE!!

Ingredients:

1/4 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup pecan pieces
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 (9 1/4 by 10-inch) sheet puff pastry, thawed (about 9 ounces) 1 large egg, beaten

Combine sugar, pecans, and cinnamon in a mini-chopper and process until sandy. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Unfold pastry and brush with egg. Spread sugar mixture over pastry. Cut in half, then cut into 8 (1/2-inch-wide) strips. Twist strips. Lay on pans, pushing ends down with your thumb. Freeze 10 to 15 minutes, until firm.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Bake until golden, rotating pans halfway, 18 to 20 minutes.
Cool on a rack. Enjoy!

Pepe's is located in the city of New Haven's Wooster Square, the Italian neighborhood. People line up outside as soon as the pizzeria opens at 11:30 am.

Once inside you will see high-ceilinged dining rooms and of course a huge tiled oven in the very open kitchen. Looking for a menu? You won't find one here. Just glance at the sign on the wall that advertises their "pies made to order". Prices range from the very modest to the most expensive clam pizza.

Portuguese Roasted Potatoes

Portuguese Roasted Potatoes

Ingredients

3 Cups of water

2 Tablesoppons of red wine vinegar

3 Tablespoons of smoked paprika

1 Teaspoon of sugar

1 Teaspoon salt

1 Medium Spanish Onion, sweet onion, chopped

1 Large tomato, seeded and chopped

3 Tablespoons chopped fesh parsely

4 Large baking potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 2 inch chunks

1 pound smoked sausage, thinly sliced, can use portuguese chourico (optional)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Pour water into a roasting pan.

Add vinegar.

Sprinkle paprika and sugar over the water and mix, removing the lumps.

Add salt, pepper, onion, tomato, parsley, potatoes, and sliced sausage (optional). Mix well.

Bake UNCOVERED at 375 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Stir once after 1 hour.

The potatoes will have a nice red color when they are done.

Portuguese Flan With Port Wine. (Pudim a Portuguesa Com Vinho do Porto)

Portuguese Flan With Port Wine (Pudim a Portguesa Com Vinho do Porto)

1 1/2 c. heavy cream
1 1/2 c. milk
3/4 c. sugar
6 egg yolks
2 tsp. port

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a saucepan warm the cream and milk over high heat until small bubbles appear around the edge of the pan. Set aside off the heat. In a small saucepan, or skillet caramelize the sugar by stirring it over moderate heat, until it melts and turns a light golden brown.

Immediately pour the the caramel into the bottom of a heat proof porcelain or glass individual molds or custard cups. With a whisk, or an electric beater, beat the egg yolks until they are well blended. Then slowly pour in the cream mixture, stirring constantly with a spoon. Stir in the port and strain the mixture through a fine sieve into your mold(s).

Set the molds in a large roasting pan on the middle shelf of the oven and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the molds. Bake for 40 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center of the custard comes out clean. Cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or until thoroughly chilled.

To unmold the custard, run a sharp knife around the inside edge of each mold and dip the bottom briefly in hot water. Then wipe the mold dry, place a chilled serving plate upside down over each mold and, grasping mold and plate firmly together, quickly invert them. Rap the plate on a table and the custard should slide out easily. In Portugal, the custard is sometimes garnished with a flower blossom or do as I do garnish with fresh strawberries. Enjoy!

Every year in June, New Haven hosts The International Festival of Arts and Ideas festival-stunning music and dance, brilliant theater, bright and emergent thinkers gathered from around the world. As the Festival unfolds, the city shares the finery of its venues which include world-class theaters, courtyards, museums, galleries, and richly diverse neighborhoods with guests from near and far. The Festival showcases hundreds of international events each summer, from over 20 countries, with an impressive scale and scope unmatched in the Northeast.

- The 30-piece Balinese wood and metal percussion orchestra Gamelan Galak Tika and Ensemble Robot, a remote-controlled music-making-machine act from M.I.T. in Cambridge, Mass. Begins at 7:00pm
Saturday, June 21
- East Village Opera Company, made up of two classically trained singers, a string quartet, electric bass, guitars, keyboards and drums, will interpret opera selections as rock anthems. Begins at 8:00pm
Sunday, June 22
- The Latin double-bill of Grupo Fantasma and the alt-folklorico band Pistolera. Begins at 7:00pm
Friday, June 27
- New Haven native Ben Allison with his new jazz ensemble, Man Size Safe. Begins at 7:00pm

The Milford Green is located on Broad Street in Milford, CT. May 10th & 11th from 10 am - 5 p.m. Walk the beautiful Milford Green. Enjoy the Spring flowers and the lovely Milford Gazebo.

Displays will included many captivating paintings, wind activated sculptures, sculptures in wood stone and metal.

Antipasto Appetizer on a Stick! Salami Lollipops!

Ingredients:

Sliced thin Sopressata Salami

Arugula leaves

Cream cheese

Long thin breadsticks

Take a slice of salami and swipe a layer of cream cheese (or any spreadable cheese) take bread stick and a couple pieces of the arugula and role it up on the bread stick. Make sure you have the arugula leaves peaking through the top of lollipop. Love these!

Chicken Parmesan Bake

Ingredients:

3 Cloves of Garlic

Olive Oil

Red Pepper Flakes

8 Boneless Chicken Breasts

4 Cups of Your Favorite Tomato Sauce

1/4 Cup Chopped Basil Leaves

4 Ounces Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

4 Ounces Shredded Parmesan Cheese

4-5 Ounce Package of Garlic Croutons

Glaze bottom of 9x13 pan with olive oil. Add crushed garlic and red pepperr flakes (to taste). Place chicken breasts on bottom of pan. Pour 2 cups of sauce over chicken. Add Basil leaves on top of sauce. Add Mozzarella Cheese. Then proceed with Garlic Croutons on top. Sprinkle top of croutons with Parmesan Cheese. Bake uncovered in oven at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Enjoy!

I Got Boobie Trapped At An REO!

I showed 5 foreclosures this weekend. Mostly all were stripped of copper. One house in particular had electric baseboard heat on the third floor. The thieves even stripped the baseboard on the electric heat thinking they were going to find copper.

On the last house I showed, no copper was touched. BUT as we slowly went down the back staircase (it was really dark) and went into the first floor apartment, the stench was so horrible.

I guess they had dogs so it smelled of urine and feces etc etc. When we hurried back up those same stairs we noticed that they had boobie trapped the steps. 3 pieces of dog poop on each stair! So that means, when we came down the steps we all had to step in the poop!

Wow! What people will do when they are losing their home. In this case thank goodness the poop was dry! Can you imagine how long it took them to collect all that poop for the boobie trap!?

Thieves Gut Copper From Homes

The theft of copper and other metals has been so rampant in communities with a large number of homes left vacant as a result of foreclosures that real estate practitioners are painting "No Copper, Only PVC" on the outside of the homes, in the hopes that criminals will stay away.

"I had a property under agreement. We negotiated. The offer was accepted. The buyer came back to the property three weeks later only to find [thieves] had gotten in and stolen the copper, so we had to go back to the bank and renegotiate," says Marc Charney, president of CharneyRealEstate.com in Brockton, Mass.

After haggling, the bank cut $5,000 off the $105,000 price.

Lenders are increasingly unwilling to lend if there is any hint that the property has been stripped of pipes and copper wiring for fear the surprised buyers will default, leaving the bank holding the property. It may then likely be considered only worthy of a tear-down.

At least 15 U.S. states - from California to New York - drafted legislation in the past year to deal with the problem, passing everything from tighter regulations on scrap metals traders to tougher penalties for metal theft.

Scrap metal traders say that nearly all of the stolen metal is shipped to China and India.
