social networking: Your online experience sucks because your advice came from a doosh - 04/20/11 03:18 PM
Granted the chosen words do not make the classiest of titles but I may or may not have a bone to pick. In part I do but it is only from my personal experience and interaction with my clients and friends which inspired this short article. Surely I have trusted enough of the wrong people in my life. With today's technology and the massive amount of information shared by our friends and others it is almost impossible, at times, to tell the difference between real trust agents and people who think they are correct just because they are writing.
The real … (31 comments)

social networking: Why you are wasting your time on Twitter - 12/29/10 01:44 PM
Never having been accused of being the quiet type it has been a lifetime challenge to keep my opinion to myself. Yet when I hear people say or read people's writing talking about the waste of time Twitter is it piques my interest. Listen, I'm the first to admit anchovy pizza isn't for everyone but if 25% of my prospective relationships like anchovy pizza it's worth a try. Learning how to talk about the anchovies, knowing what compliments their flavor, other intricate details about anchovies - that is my duty if I intend to serve.
So you're on Twitter and it's a waste … (9 comments)

social networking: Limited social media = limited opportunity - 06/15/10 02:13 PM
Recently I had the opportunity to sit in with and co-moderate a panel of local business professionals who want to know how to be prepared for business tactics in the immediate future - at least over the next 5 years. It was amazing to me how many of them still reject or at least avoid social media as a viable venue for engaging the general public for their overall marketing strategy.
Since I am now 50+ I can tell you the world has changed dramatically in my lifetime. When I was a child most of my friends still were hoping for … (35 comments)

social networking: Friendship or salesmanship? - 06/06/10 10:38 AM
If you have enough friends you never have to sell anything. If you have ever attended the Carnegie Institute you almost certainly know that in 1936 Dale Carnegie wrote, "How To Win Friends and Influence People". My uncle, Benjamin Wilkes Hale, did his best to get me to read it when I was about seven. It was much later before I finally picked it up.
During my formative businessman years, from about age twenty to age thirty-five, I really chewed through life. There were two kinds of people to me, useful and useless. Unfortunately for me most people were useless. My … (61 comments)

social networking: Twitter 099 – VERY Basic Twitter - 09/05/09 12:39 AM
It never dawned on me there may be people who don't understand the very basics of Twitter. This would be the person to whom someone said, "Create a Twitter account", so they did. Chances are it was even an email with a link to http://twitter.com with no further instructions. So, for those of you to whom this applies here are the ABC's of Twitter: 1. Go to http://twitter.com 2. Click on the link that says "Sign up now" (or simply go to http://tiwtter.com/signup) 3. Fill in the blanks: Real name, stage name, password. (Tips on creating a username: It will be … (9 comments)

social networking: I Just Wiped My Nose on My Sleeve...Also, Politics - 06/05/09 08:02 AM
Ken has flipped his lid! What in the world could a title like that be attached to? Simple enough: yet another article about Social Media and what you should and should not write. Actually the title came from a little inside joke between Jason Crouch and me. We were actually joking about content of blog posts and what makes people read them and enjoy them. If you listen to our show you already know we spend an hour every Tuesday sharing information about how we use Social Media to keep our businesses rolling and interviewing guests who bring their own opinions … (6 comments)

social networking: Social Media Edge: Twitter - 04/23/09 03:04 PM
I see you there on Twitter. Your name is there, you have your profile completed with a little thumbnail of your cute little self there. You even have your phone number in your profile - good! But then I see you have 23 followers and you follow 8 people and you have updated 112 times. Updated means posted. Posted does not mean interacted. Especially when all 112 posts after the initial two: "Trying Twitter" and "Hello?" begins with "Just posted on ActiveRain".
You're not Tweeting. In fact, you're abusing. Ouch - I know. But what would you prefer - me to … (7 comments)

social networking: Shouting My Own Secrets - Social Media Etiquette - 03/24/09 03:17 PM
Social media is not a disease but it can have an infection. I personally have been guilty of infecting social media but my lessons were (mostly) learned two decades ago when there was little forgiveness. Of course we didn't call it social media back then we called it by other names like USENET or BBS. Trust me, in 1989 you did not have to wonder if you may have stepped over some boundary - you knew it within seconds. We called them flames or flame wars. If you posted a link to your blog or an invitation to your event in … (11 comments)

social networking: Using URL Tools To Shrink Links and Track Web Traffic - 03/22/09 12:04 PM
Many of you have been using URL (Uniform Resource Locator also called web link or link) shortening tools for some time. You may already know the value of saving space and now you may be about to learn about using these same hosted applications to track your traffic. For example you may be able to know where the visitor clicked on the link. This is important when you use the link on multiple pages.
Let me back up. Why shorten a URL? Until recently there really was no reason to shrink a URL but with the coming up of microblogs and … (37 comments)

social networking: Twitter, Facebook and Wasting Time (REtechSouth) - 03/07/09 09:33 AM
Guilty. Not you - me. I am guilty of wasting time on Twitter and Facebook. In fact I have wasted so much time on Twitter and Facebook that I now waste even more time keeping up with at least a dozen new prospects every week. Then the closings that I am seeing are really cutting into my week - like the $300,000 FHA 203(k) loan I am doing because of a referral I got from a Twitter "friend".
Sure, I will back up just a bit. Twitter is a "micro-blog" and so named because users post messages called "tweets" of a … (13 comments)

social networking: Do Your Neighbors Know What You Do? 7 Tips - 02/22/09 06:00 PM
We spend hundreds or thousands of dollars a year or even month telling complete strangers what we do in hopes they will select us to provide their services. On Thursday and Friday I was teaching former real estate agents to become loan officers and I asked them a simple question, "Who will your first contact be?"
Without fail they kind of shrugged and mumbled and nobody really knew how to answer. It was obvious they did know the answer after I started asking questions of them like, "do you go to church?" or "have you been to a PTA meeting lately?" … (21 comments)

social networking: A Trio of Micros for Powerful Social Networking - 11/24/08 08:04 PM
Really the formula is quite simple: meet more people, be nice to more people, know more people. Between all of my social networks I can directly touch (through friends, connections, followers, etc) roughly 11,500 people within a matter of about 1/2 hour. Add to that the number of people who have signed up to receive occasional email updates from me and it nearly triples. I can tell you not only from majoring in marketing but from spending a few bucks on it to be able to touch that many people that quickly for such a low immediate cost is simply amazing! … (13 comments)
