mn: Mini-ponds - 08/09/08 09:26 PM
"What is a mini-pond", you may ask "and why would I want one?". Mini-ponds are a a mini-ecosystem and you only need a container that holds at least four gallons of water.  It is a good start to water gardening without a major committment and the expense.  A large permanent pond can easily cost over $10,000.
For a container try a salvaged claw-foot bathtub, a galvanized horse trough or an old whisky barrel.  Water plants are available at larger garden centers along with some electrical accessories.  Fish can be inexpensive gold fish, one male betta ( not 2) or … (7 comments)

mn: Recalling The Rescue of a Japanese Fisherman - 62 years ago - 05/25/07 04:36 PM
About a month before this story took place, atomic bombs had been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killing about 210,00 Japanese citizens.  WW2 was officially over but Navy ships remained stationed off the coast of Japan, there were lingering hostilities and perhaps some that remain today.  A Crosslake, MN. man was serving as a Navy seaman aboard the USS Clifton, a fleet tanker. His crew felt the impact as the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and they went on shore to visit the decimated city some time later.
Around September 16, 1945 the typhoon Makurazaki struck Kagoshima Bay, Japan, and nearly … (3 comments)

mn: When will the rain stop? - 04/01/07 09:19 PM

Here in the Greater Brainerd Lakes area of Minnesota - it is raining.  It has been raining for days.  With a very low amount of snowfall, this is a good thing.  For me, I'd rather get the snow!  Rain for days is depressing (sorry- Seattle residents). You can't do anything in a rain this cold and when you try - soon you are back in the house changing clothes.
Since we have 14 horses, I need to put them in the barn so they get a chance to dry off and warm up.  They certainly appreciate it and I feel … (3 comments)

mn: To Market, To Market - 03/31/07 07:37 PM

Yesterday and today was the annual Commerce and Industry Show for the Brainerd Lakes Area in Minnesota.  Now called the Commerce & Industry Marketplace, it was established in 1977.  It has grown to occupy both the Brainerd Civic Center and the Gold Metal Arena. The show  hosted  217 vendors.  Miss Brainerd Lakes was there wearing her crown, passing out bags and smiling.  My daughter , Allison Lordbock, was  Miss Brainerd Lakes- 2006 so we have been here before. Now that is good information but, how does it apply to staging.?
I attended the show and visited with each vendor that had anything to … (0 comments)

mn: Mike Padgett -a true Champion - 03/31/07 09:11 AM
" Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."— Special Olympics Athlete Oath
Area residents were thrilled to hear that their own Mike Padgett captured the gold metal for figure skating in the Minnesota Special Olympics on March 9 at the Ames Arena.  Many had donated and helped to sponsor his lifelong dream of skating in the Special Olympics.  These donations covered the expenses for his indoor ice time. Most days or evenings throughout the winter, Mike can be found skating or teaching someone to skate on our outdoor ice rink at Lum Park.  … (1 comments)

mn: Ice Fishing Extravaganza pays out - 03/30/07 08:11 PM
For those of you who live in warm climates - Minnesotans walk on water! Not only do we walk on it, we drive on it, have races on it & fish on it.  Well, not exactly on it  in the winter,  but more like through it. That is a very popular thing to do up North and very beneficial for our area charities.  The Brainerd Jaycees have just made their annual announcement of how much money was raised in the Ice Fishing Extravaganza  - $211,528.  That amount will be divided and distributed to more that 65 area charities.  That made the … (0 comments)
