Talk about buying a (big) piece of paradise. The governor of Hawaii confirmed today that Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle in Redwood Shores, Calif. is buying 98% of the Hawaiian Island of Lanai. Lanai was the only privately-held Hawaiian island, being originally purchased by James Dole (of Dole Pineappeal) 90 years ago in 1922. The current owner is Ellison's fellow billionaire David Murdock.

Question #2: If my tax payment is post-dated by the deadline (December 10 or April 10), am I exempt from paying fines and penalties?
Proof of posting payment by the due date is still considered late by the Tax Collector’s office, unless it physically makes it into their office. (This is in contrast to the post-dating qualification for federal and state income taxes).

Sorry, the answer is no. However, there are some options and exceptions for the disabled and seniors.
The County does accept credit card payments.
Please note: there is a fee of 2.5% ($1.00 minimum) for paying with a credit card.The fee for paying with an electronic check is $15.00 ($27.00 for large amounts).

The Santa Clara County fiscal year runs July 1 through June 30. As with all of California, Santa Clara County property taxes are payable in two installments.

Sad to say, the deadline is absolutely firm in requiring the payment to be physically in and received by the Santa Clara County tax collector by 5:00 pm on December 10 and April 10. Proof of posting on or before the due date will not exempt you from penalties.
