February 14 is Saint Valentine’s Day, a day in which people show love and affection for others with cards (valentines), candy, flowers, jewels, meals, experiences and other gifts.
But what else happened on February 14?
1778 – The United States Flag is first formally recognized by a foreign naval vessel, when French Admiral Toussaint-Guillaume Picquet de la Motte rendered a nine gun salute to USS Ranger, which was commanded by American John Paul Jones.
1779 – Explorer Captain James Cook is killed by Native Hawaiians near Kealakekua on the Island of Hawaii.
1859 – Oregon is admitted as the 33rd state in America.
1876 – Alexander Graham Bell applies for a patent for the telephone, as does Elisha Gray.
1912 – Arizona is admitted as the 48th U.S. state.
1920 – The League of Women Voters is founded in Chicago, Illinois.

February 14th.    Remember the simpler times when as children Valentines Day Cards were shared with every person in the classroom? That felt like a big warm hug,  didn't it? Students even practiced penmanship, too. That's something schoolchildren don't often do much of today.   Who else remembers what a fun treat it was to receive a box of Necco conversation hearts candies?
