newfoundland: All Wild at Quidi Vidi Lake, St. John's, Newfoundland - 03/18/11 11:01 AM
I couldn't help but stop on Wednesday to take this short video of the ducks, pigeons, seagulls and even a goose all having a wild time at Quidi Vidi Lake. It was cool but the sun was shining and some folks has just gone by to feed the ducks. The ice was breaking up where the brook runs into the lake. St. John's and the surrounding area has lots of places for the waterfowl to gather and many of them hang around the St. John's all winter long. I hope you enjoy the video. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ About the Author:

newfoundland: A Panoramic View of St. John's, Newfoundland - 03/02/11 05:17 PM
A panoramic view of St. John's, Newfoundland was something I had to see today. We sure have been visited by old man winter in February, but today the sun was shining it all its glory, the sky was blue, and I think most Newfoundlanders were feeling pretty much on top shelf. So I headed up to Signal Hill with my video camera and tried to capture the view so you could appreciate something of the beauty of St. John's in winter. The wind is always blowing even a little on top of Signal Hill so the audio gets a bit muffled

newfoundland: Google Street View of St. John's, Newfoundland - 02/10/10 09:14 PM
The Google Street view of St. John's Newfoundland will allow you to walk down Duckworth Street looking for the Thai Restaurant, check out the bars on George Street and then take a spin up to Signal Hill and have a look at the ocean. I have posted a couple of things about St. John's previously with stills. Here are three examples. I am St. John's After The Great Fire of 1892, Some Moose Love The City Life and one of my favourites A Badge Of Honour For The Taking. All of them give you a little different perspective on the city.

newfoundland: Heady Real Estate Market in St. John's Newfoundland - 02/05/10 09:25 AM
We have a heady real estate market in St. John’s, Newfoundland right now. Perhaps we should ask, "Is it getting a little too heady? Are buyers beginning to be too aggressive? Are consumers just resigned to the fact that prices are climbing more?" For many years our market in St. John's was balanced and prices were advancing modestly. A two to three percent rise was the norm. Then, Newfoundland's average prices were third lowest in the country. But things are different today. Annual increases in average prices have risen by >10% in the last two years. Average prices in Newfoundland

newfoundland: PETA Gets Pied in the Face in St. John's Newfoundland - 01/29/10 04:23 PM
PETA gets pied in the face in St. John's Newfoundland today. A local radio station VOCM reported on their website today that a planned protest by PETA against the seal hunt was sabotaged. The deed was done by a pie throwing puppy dog know as The Downhomer magazine mascot 'Salty Dog'. Apparently the PETA protester, a young woman from Vancouver, Emily Lavender was standing outside the Delta Hotel, in St. John's protesting the seal hunt holding a sign saying "Stop the Seal Slaughter". Prime Minister Harper was inside the Hotel addressing the Canadian Construction Association conference at the time. Soon after the PETA protester

newfoundland: Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism Theme is Ancient Land - 01/14/10 01:03 PM
Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism is again using the province's beautiful landscape and historic culture for its seasonal campaign. Produced by a St. John's agency Target, it is called "Ancient Land". Shot on location in Labrador's Torngat Mountains National Park, it features a young Aboriginal girl and her grandfather exploring rocky terrain and coastal areas. "Throughout this land, for thousands of years, it's been said that everything has a spirit," the voiceover says as the pair approach an inukshuk. "Not surprisingly, it's where you might find your own." The two-minute version of the video is currently running nationally on network and specialty stations, with 30 and 60 second

newfoundland: You Cannot Escape Through The Narrows With Your Eyes Closed - 01/13/10 01:21 PM
You cannot escape through The Narrows with your eyes closed. Clinging to the cliffs along the shoreline of the St. John's harbour, homes just in from “The Narrows” have one of the most spectacular views of the city. They peer through to the end of the harbour where for centuries ships and sailors have found respite from the Atlantic. Each home owner seems to have assumed a duty to display the brilliant colors of blue, green, red or yellow as though the signature theme of St. John’s residential architecture is "iridescence". The Narrows is a small channel between the Southside

newfoundland: Cape Spear Newfoundland-The Most Easterly Point In North America - 11/03/09 07:11 AM
Cape Spear, Newfoundland is the most easterly point in North America. A few months ago, I wrote a post about a place not far from St. John's. That place is Cape Spear, Newfoundland, the most easterly point in North America. It was called A Badge Of Honour For The Taking. I was not long blogging when I wrote that post. My focus was on writing eloquently about interesting places in Newfoundland. I was happy if my compositions were interesting, informative and perhaps even flavoured with a little bit of whit. I know some people did read the post, but at

newfoundland: Mama Soula's Greek Restaurant, 411 Torbay Road, St. John's, Newfoundland - 11/02/09 09:53 AM
Mama Soula’s Greek Restaurant at 411 Torbay Road, St. John’s Newfoundland is without a doubt my favourite Greek restaurant. The friendly staff are always pleasant and will go the extra mile to make your visit a memorable one. The decor is attractive and clean, and you quickly feel cozy and warm even though there is a bustle of people and food moving all about you. My wife and I have been there on many occasions with friends or sometimes alone. The atmosphere is relaxing after a busy day. I love to sit and enjoy delicious hot bread sticks freshly baked,

newfoundland: Have Interest Rates Bottomed? A Mortgage Lender Says They Are Begining to Move Up - 10/14/09 08:02 AM
In St. John's Newfoundland, a local lender, Mr. John Woodford with the Royal Bank of Canada just sent me an email last evening to say that interest rates have moved up for the major lenders in Canada. It appears that he knew this was coming since Monday but was not permitted to release it to the public. I always knew John was a man of principal. Turns out he is actually a man of principal and interest. OK, bad pun. Here is the latest news according to John. "The 5 year fixed closed rate is now 4.54%. The 5 year variable

newfoundland: Any “Moammars” Allowed In? - 09/27/09 06:59 PM
Within the last week, it was reported that Moammar Gadhafi was planning a visit to St. John’s on Sept 29th. His plane was to refuel at the airport and perhaps these visitors would take in a few sights and snap a few photos of the oldest city in North America. It’s not a wonder that they would like to visit Newfoundland. Most who haven't would and many who have visited the beautiful province long for the day when they can return. But, it’s not every day the capital city St. John's is visited by a dictator of notoriety such as Moammar

newfoundland: A University Education - Don't Let The Kids "Duck" Out Early - 07/09/09 09:31 PM
Most of us know the value of a good education today. Without a degree it is often difficult to get meaningful employment at anything other than serving hamburgers, cleaning hotel rooms or mowing lawns. Competition for well paying jobs has increased and though for a while many workers could move just about anywhere and find meaningful work, the recent recession has changed that picture quite a bit. Now even some of the well educated have found job hunting a necessary life skill. A few weeks ago, I noticed a mother introducing her little ones to the merits of Memorial University in
