st johns: A Panoramic View of St. John's, Newfoundland - 03/02/11 09:17 AM
A panoramic view of St. John's, Newfoundland was something I had to see today.  We sure have been visited by old man winter in February, but today the sun was shining it all its glory, the sky was blue, and I think most Newfoundlanders were feeling pretty much on top shelf.
So I headed up to Signal Hill with my video camera and tried to capture the view so you could appreciate something of the beauty of St. John's in winter.  The wind is always blowing even a little on top of Signal Hill so the audio gets a bit muffled … (8 comments)

st johns: Google Street View of St. John's, Newfoundland - 02/10/10 01:14 PM
The Google Street view of St. John's Newfoundland will allow you to walk down Duckworth Street looking for the Thai Restaurant, check out the bars on George Street and then take a spin up to Signal Hill and have a look at the ocean.
I have posted a couple of things about St. John's previously with stills.  Here are three examples.  I am St. John's After The Great Fire of 1892, Some Moose Love The City Life and one of my favourites A Badge Of Honour For The Taking.  All of them give you a little different perspective on the city.

st johns: Heady Real Estate Market in St. John's Newfoundland - 02/05/10 01:25 AM
We have a heady real estate market in St. John’s, Newfoundland right now.  Perhaps we should ask, "Is it getting a little too heady?  Are buyers beginning to be too aggressive?  Are consumers just resigned to the fact that prices are climbing more?"
For many years our market in St. John's was balanced and prices were advancing modestly.  A two to three percent rise was the norm.  Then, Newfoundland's average prices were third lowest in the country.  But things are different today.  Annual increases in average prices have risen by >10% in the last two years.  Average prices in Newfoundland … (5 comments)

st johns: PETA Gets Pied in the Face in St. John's Newfoundland - 01/29/10 08:23 AM
PETA gets pied in the face in St. John's Newfoundland today.  A local radio station VOCM reported on their website today that a planned protest by PETA against the seal hunt was sabotaged.  The deed was done by a pie throwing puppy dog know as The Downhomer magazine mascot 'Salty Dog'.
Apparently the PETA protester, a young woman from Vancouver, Emily Lavender was standing outside the Delta Hotel, in St. John's protesting the seal hunt holding a sign saying "Stop the Seal Slaughter".  Prime Minister Harper was inside the Hotel addressing the Canadian Construction Association conference at the time.
Soon after the PETA protester … (3 comments)

st johns: You Cannot Escape Through The Narrows With Your Eyes Closed - 01/13/10 05:21 AM
You cannot escape through The Narrows with your eyes closed.  Clinging to the cliffs along the shoreline of the St. John's harbour, homes just in from “The Narrows” have one of the most spectacular views of the city.  They peer through to the end of the harbour where for centuries ships and sailors have found respite from the Atlantic.  Each home owner seems to have assumed a duty to display the brilliant colors of blue, green, red or yellow as though the signature theme of St. John’s residential architecture is "iridescence".
The Narrows is a small channel  between the Southside … (11 comments)

st johns: Buyers Sellers and Realtors in St. John's Newfoundland Love Home Inspections - 12/15/09 02:37 AM
Let me tell you why buyers, sellers, and Realtors in St. John's Newfoundland love home inspections.
Why wouldn't they? Home inspectors provide a very valuable service.  Home inspections identify the deficiencies of a home and make sure all parties to the transaction are fully informed about the condition of the home.  In doing so, they help to keep both the buyers and sellers out of court and that always make the Realtor happy.  Here are seven advantages of having a home inspection done before a deal is closed.
1.  All home buyers have a right to know the home condition … (10 comments)

st johns: Olympic Torch In St. John's, Newfoundland Today - 11/13/09 02:59 PM
The Olympic torch was in St. John's, Newfoundland today.  It started at Cape Spear, North America's most easterly point and it marched proudly through the communities of Petty Harbour, the Goulds, Conception Bay South, Manuels, Chamberlains,  Paradise, Mount Pearl, and finally it ended up being paraded to the Confederation building and on through the streets of St. John's, Newfoundland.
The weather was cool and the sky was overcast but there was no wind, rain or snow to be concerned with.  The festivities ended at Bowering Park, in the west end of St. John's, this evening with a real Newfoundland kitchen party … (14 comments)

st johns: Mama Soula's Greek Restaurant, 411 Torbay Road, St. John's, Newfoundland - 11/02/09 01:53 AM
Mama Soula’s Greek Restaurant at 411 Torbay Road, St. John’s Newfoundland is without a doubt my favourite Greek restaurant.  The friendly staff are always pleasant and will go the extra mile to make your visit a memorable one.  The decor is attractive and clean, and you quickly feel cozy and warm even though there is a bustle of people and food moving all about you.
My wife and I have been there on many occasions with friends or sometimes alone.  The atmosphere is relaxing after a busy day.  I love to sit and enjoy delicious hot bread sticks freshly baked, … (7 comments)

st johns: Have Interest Rates Bottomed? A Mortgage Lender Says They Are Begining to Move Up - 10/14/09 01:02 AM
In St. John's Newfoundland, a local lender, Mr. John Woodford with the Royal Bank of Canada just sent me an email last evening to say that interest rates have moved up for the major lenders in Canada.  It appears that he knew this was coming since Monday but was not permitted to release it to the public.  I always knew John was a man of principal.  Turns out he is actually a man of principal and interest.  OK, bad pun.
Here is the latest news according to John.  "The 5 year fixed closed rate is now 4.54%.  The 5 year variable … (4 comments)

st johns: Any “Moammars” Allowed In? - 09/27/09 11:59 AM
Within the last week, it was reported that Moammar Gadhafi was planning a visit to St. John’s on Sept 29th.  His plane was to refuel at the airport and perhaps these visitors would take in a few sights and snap a few photos of the oldest city in North America.  It’s not a wonder that they would like to visit Newfoundland.  Most who haven't would and many who have visited the beautiful province long for the day when they can return.
But, it’s not every day the capital city St. John's is visited by a dictator of notoriety such as Moammar … (3 comments)

st johns: A University Education - Don't Let The Kids "Duck" Out Early - 07/09/09 02:31 PM
Most of us know the value of a good education today.  Without a degree it is often difficult to get meaningful employment at anything other than serving hamburgers, cleaning hotel rooms or mowing lawns.  Competition for well paying jobs has increased and though for a while many workers could move just about anywhere and find meaningful work, the recent recession has changed that picture quite a bit.  Now even some of the well educated have found job hunting a necessary life skill.
A few weeks ago, I noticed a mother introducing her little ones to the merits of Memorial University in … (10 comments)

st johns: I Am St. John's Newfoundland After The Great Fire of 1892- Look At Me Now! - 06/12/09 02:45 AM
On July 8, 1892, St. John's, Newfoundland was devastated by a fire that destroyed nearly all the homes and businesses in the east end of the city.  The high winds that day, the incomplete repairs to the water supply system and the simple incident of dropping a pipe in Timothy O'Brien's stable at Freshwater Road at the top of Carter's Hill ushered in what would become the worst fire in St. John's history.
Together these events combined to create the calamity that leveled much of the city turning it into rubble and soot within twenty-four hours.  The fire spread and devoured … (4 comments)

st johns: Please Forgive My Candor But You Should Go Take A Hike - 05/18/09 11:36 PM
One attractive feature of living in St. John's is the interesting walking trails throughout.  Many people use the trail system and appreciate it for convenience, the wonderful scenery and the length of walks available.  It is so easy to walk out your front door and be scooting briskly around some pond, traveling the meandering of a beautiful brook or wondering through a park like settings.  Sometimes within a few minutes some people who live close enough can be bounding through the forest of Pippy Park.
The Rennies River Trail is just one of those walks.  It meanders along the Rennies River … (0 comments)

st johns: Some Moose Love The City Life! - 05/14/09 02:59 PM
St. John's is an old city with lots of character and charm.  In fact its acclaimed as the oldest city in North America.  As the Capital city of Newfoundland, it has become the center for the Provincial Government and the hub for economic activity in the province.
Many government offices for Newfoundland and Labrador are based in St. John's.  The most prominent structure is the Confederation Building.  The Confederation Building serves as the seat of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly.  It was built in 1959 and replaced the Colonial Building.

The Confederation Building was built on a … (10 comments)
