Are Psychological Price Breaks Real? - 08/29/11 06:47 PM
Many years ago, when we were learning our trade, some distinguished authority explained to us that buyers like to think in chunks of money.
They will, for example, tell their agent, "We’re willing to go to $225,000", or some similar number that comes in $25,000 increments, so that there would be, in effect, a stepped pricing ladder. And we were also informed that above a certain level, depending on the specific market, those increments might be $50,000 steps, and at even higher levels, perhaps $100,000 steps. So there’s these pools of buyers out there are they’re neatly arranged in discrete groups. … (37 comments)

Earthquake Safety Tips - 08/28/11 04:18 PM
Chris Ann Cleland, a great Realtor from Virginia, posted this blog article last week on earthquake safety tips. This isn't something I would have thought about re-posting here, but as you know, the very same day Chris Ann got to experience her first quake, we had one here in Colorado as well. You never know when information like this will be important, but we at least know now that it isn't irrelevant. Thanks, Chris Ann.

How To Make The Big Lemon Pancake! - 08/28/11 01:25 PM

This is one of my favorite weekend breakfast dishes - I've seen it called a German pancake or a Swedish pancake, but not in places where there were many Germans or Swedes, so we just always called it Big Pancake. It's yummy, spectacular and versatile, and also very easy, if you know a simple trick.
Here's what you need:
2 eggs, beaten just enough to break down and incorporate the egg whites 1/2 cup of flour 1/2 cup of milk 1 lemon 2 TBS Butter Powdered Sugar 10" oven-proof frying pan Preheat oven to 425°
(Here's the trick - if you … (9 comments)

Look At That!! An Apollo Astronaut's Perspective. - 08/26/11 04:49 PM
So I'm killing time reading the internets again, and on one of my very favorite sites - BoingBoing.net - I ran across this different take on looking at our little blue marble just hanging there in space:

Edgar Mitchell just enhanced his hero status with me way beyond what he gets automatically for being an astronaut.
And if you've never wasted any time on BoingBoing, I highly recommend it - almost everytime I check it out, there's something informative or entertaining there.

It's useful and instructive to pay attention to goings-on elsewhere in the world. It brings a clarifying sense of perspective to our own troubles and challenges, and lets us know that we're not alone in dealing with the big issues of the day.
This little gem below actually caught my attention from the front page of the digital edition of the New York Times last evening.

Sturgeon's Law - 08/22/11 09:44 PM
I first ran across Sturgeon's Law many, many years ago, and it has been a tool that I find myself relying on more and more as time goes on. In these days of constant crisis and unrest, trying to make sense of what is going on can be a real challenge - emotionally and intellectually draining, time-consuming, and ultimately, unproductive.
Fortunately, way back in 1958, science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon uncovered a fundamental rule of life on Planet Earth that can help enormously:
STURGEON'S LAW: 90% of everything is crap
I initially spent many years questioning that assertion, but the more … (43 comments)

It's Time - 08/19/11 08:27 AM

"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." - Albert Einstein
I don't think anyone is going to argue too strenuously against that thought, and I'd like to believe that most of us would embrace it enthusiastically. But in regards to our current heap of economic, social and political problems, so far we're being treated to the same old same old.
Possibly the worst example I've seen so far was the proposed legislation Mike Cooper wrote about today in his blog post Headlines that make you say, "Great!" And, headlines that make … (53 comments)

Game Theory and the Debt Ceiling - 08/17/11 10:26 AM
I've always been interested in game theory - it pops up in the strangest places, like nuclear weapons strategy, evolutionary biology and social psychology to name a few. Getting deeply into it takes some sophisticated math skills, but an understanding of the general idea and how the basic concepts work is pretty accessible, as well as useful. Not surprisingly, game theory has some application to real estate negotiations.

Remembering Lilly - 08/16/11 10:25 AM
We lost Lilly a little over a year ago, and I wrote this shortly afterward. I've been thinking about her a lot lately and wanted to share a bit of her with the people who might read our blog:

While others mourned, stuffed animals everywhere breathed a great sigh of relief at the news of the passing of their archnemesis, Lilly Greenberg. Ever since her stellar performance at the 2004 International Stuffed Animal Olympics, where she won 4 gold medals - in appendage removal, squeaking, both random and sustained, and strewing - she has haunted their nightmares in the form of … (15 comments)

The Big Chill! - 08/09/11 06:54 PM

This is my partner and wife, Mary, doing a Polar Plunge at Jougla Point on the Antarctic Peninsula last November. The water was about 28 degrees fahrenheit - colder than freezing because of the high salinity in the seas. (As an aside - since the water is colder than freezing, when it snows, the snow doesn't melt on the water. It just sits there, and it's really weird and cool to watch snow drifts blowing across the surface of the sea.)
I have no idea why Mary and about 25 others of our fellow passengers thought that this would be … (20 comments)
