In 1924, Floyd and Bess Shields came to the desert and opened Shields Date Garden and started a tradition that would soon become a Palm Springs legacy. Actually, Shields is in Indio on the East end of The Coachella Valley about 20 miles from Palm Springs but regardless of where you are, a visit to Floyd and Bess's place is worth a drive. From the beginning, The Shields invited guests and tourists to their farm and garden. For the 65th year The Riverside County Fair & Date Festival opens this Friday, February 18, 2011, in Indio, California. The fairgrounds are located on Highway 111 and admission to the fair on opening Friday is free between the hours of 10:00am and 3:00pm according to the fair's website. Regular admission prices are $5.00 for children and $7.00 for adults. An unlimited daily ride wrist band can be purchased for an additional $25.00.
