howto: Home Maintenance #7 - Weatherstripping - 01/23/12 07:23 PM
In Oklahoma, it's generally pretty easy to tell if your home is drafty, but even if you don't feel drafts, you could still be wasting energy.Try this quick test: Close one of your outside doors on a sheet of paper. If the paper pulls out fairly easily and doesn't tear, you're likely losing energy. You can also use the old candle or lighter test. Move a lit candle around your doors and windows (be very careful not to burn yourself) and see if that flame flickers. Either test works, but that's real money leaking out between those gaps, so hurry and … (1 comments)

howto: Home Maintenance Tip #5 - Hot Water - 12/27/11 02:51 PM
It may seem like a no-brainer, but when it's cold outside, your hot water heater has to work harder to heat your water. It also has to re-heat it more often, but did you know that you may be able to boost your water heater's efficiency by simply wrapping it in a thermal blanket? According to the U.S. Department of Energy, adding an insulating wrap to your water heater can reduce heat loss by as much as 45 percent and save as much as 10 percent on water heating costs. If you're not sure whether or not your water heater needs … (2 comments)

howto: DIY Home Improvement - How To Install Kitchen Cabinets - 02/27/08 03:08 PM
Consistently improving on your home is one of the best investments you can make.  Nothing makes your home more appealing to buyers than shiny new things.  Pretty surfaces, modern technology, and up-to-date decor will bring out the checkbooks every time.
Sometimes these improvements can really get expensive though, so when it's an option, consider the DIY way.  Personally, I enjoy do-it-yourself projects.  They allow my creative side to come out and demolition is a great way to take out some frustration!  The real benefit in the DIY approach though, is the savings.  It's estimated that about 70% of all home improvement expenses are the … (4 comments)

howto: Moving With Pets - A Great wikiHow - 01/15/08 02:46 PM
Making a long-distance move can be a huge stress on us, as anyone who's done it can attest to.  But what about our pets?
I think it's easy in the chaos of a move, to neglect the needs of everyone else.  What we have to realize is that if it's stressful on us, it's probably just as stressful on our kids, and even our pets.  With that in mind, I wanted to share a very informative wikiHow on how to move with pets.  It goes into details that I personally wouldn't have even considered, so check it out if you'll be moving with … (2 comments)

howto: Historical Homes in OKC - Was Yours Built With a Sears Kit? - 01/03/08 11:43 PM
Did you know that it wasn't uncommon in the early 1900s for folks to order a home building kit from Sears and build their own home?  It's true!
I've heard these stories for years but personally have never known of a home that was actually built this way, at least not one that was verified to have been.  So I found it rather interesting when I found this WikiHow article about how to spot a Sears Kit Home.  It's an interesting read if you're an agent who deals in historical homes frequently, or if you're a historical home enthusiast of any kind.
If you … (8 comments)

I just love wikiHow. For those of you who haven't stumbled across this great website yet, it's a nifty little resource for all kinds of how-to jobs. It's also a great place to show off what you know by creating and posting your own how-to articles. I have a little DIY blood running through me, and I've found more than a few useful how-to's that have helped me overcome some obstacles.
Online collaboration is a great thing... just keep in mind that something posted online is not usually guaranteed to be 100% accurate. Always check things out for yourself before putting … (5 comments)

howto: Outer Beauty is a MUST - Part I - 07/02/07 12:01 AM
These days home-improvement is big business. As a country, we're investing more in improving our homes than we are in the stock market, retirement accounts and savings accounts. In general, such improvements provide a great return on our investments. Kitchens and bathrooms are probably the most commonly improved areas in our homes and generally provide the largest return in terms of property value appreciation.
When improving your home, don't neglect the outdoor areas. Mom always said that what really matters is what's inside, but I don't think she was talking about real estate. When it's time to sell, curb appeal is the first … (9 comments)
