anne arundel county: Jury Duty SCAM Alert Resurfaces - 04/02/12 03:40 AM
The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities is issuing a warning to all County residents regarding a “Jury Duty” scam. This warning applies to all residents, and not just seniors and disabled adults. The way it works is a resident receives a phone call, and the caller indicates that a warrant has been issued for failing to report to jury duty. Of course, there was never a jury duty summons ever issued. In order to clarify the issue with the resident, the caller asks for a Social Security number and birth date in order to retrieve the summons from the

anne arundel county: Is a permit required to replace an electrical switch or outlet in Anne Arundel County, MD? - 02/29/12 12:37 AM
According to the Anne Arundel County Inspections and Permits website, a permit is NOT required to REPLACE an electrical outlet, or switch in your home. That being said, maybe the correct question to ask is SHOULD you replace the switch yourself?Residential electricity is pretty dangerous. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you should always hire someone with the requisite skills, and licenses. Necessary to replace an outlet...NO, but maybe prudent.Below is a table showing what permits, or plans are required when electrical work is conducted in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

anne arundel county: Can you face criminal charges for cutting down a tree on your property in Maryland? - 02/02/12 06:52 AM
If you live on the water, or within 1000 feet of tidal water in Maryland, you had better be aware of restrictions imposed within this Cheasapeake Bay Critical Area. For instance, if you cut that tree down on your property to get a better view of the water, you could face both civil and criminal charges. Yes, that wasn’t a typo...criminal charges.A homeowner was recently sued by the State for cutting down trees on his waterfront property to get a better view. He was sued simultaneously in both Civil and Criminal Courts. His fine in Civil Court exceeded $10,000, and he

anne arundel county: Know your Congressional Representatives in Anne Arundel County, MD - 09/06/11 10:39 AM
As we approach the 2012 political season it may be nice to call your Congressional Representatives office, or at least visit their website to get a better feel for what is important to them. We, the people, have only one way to influence politics in our area, and that is who we vote in, and more importantly, who we vote out. Once a Representative is in office, it’s pretty much impossible to influence them to any meaningful degree. Once they’re in office, they vote with their leadership the vast majority of the time. Anne Arundel County, MD is represented by

anne arundel county: Comparing foreclosure activity in Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland - 02/06/11 03:44 PM
The overheated real estate market here in Suburban Maryland started to decline around the second half of 2006, like most other areas of the country. It was a slow decline at first, than picked up speed in 2007. Finally to the beginnings of a recovery now. As you can see in the first graph of new foreclosures, they didn’t really start to hit the market in Prince George’s and Anne Arundel Counties in Maryland until around mid 2007. From there it’s been a steady upward trend, that is still there today. The banks probably released the foreclosure inventory a little at

Despite the Chicken Little national headlines you read about, the real estate market in Anne Arundel County, MD is not collapsing. While there are some significant challenges in some States and areas, the data for Anne Arundel County hasn't show those negative effects. Take a look at the table below to see the latest results for July and Year to Date July for Anne Arundel County. Counties derive most of their revenue from real estate in most jurisdictions. In Anne Arundel County, MD, 47% of revenue is generated from property taxes. Another source, albeit smaller, is also generated from real estate transactions. 5% of the revenue generated in our County comes from recording and transfer taxes on every sale. anne arundel county: Crofton, MD - Everybody loves a parade, especially when there are Firetrucks. - 09/12/10 07:44 AM
Yesterday, the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association Parade was held in Crofton, MD. The last time Crofton was able to host this event was back in 2000. Crofton residents, adults and children alike, lined Crofton Parkway to celebrate these brave volunteers. It was especially fitting to honor these first responders on the 9th anniversary of 9/11. The weather was perfect and the firetrucks and equipment shined and polished. The National and State Colors honored at the front of the Parade. The obligatory open convertible. This one was even red. Arundel was there in full force. The Odenton

anne arundel county: Do as we say, not as we do. - 07/28/10 07:30 AM
We have definitely entered into the political season here in Anne Arundel County, MD. I've had at least six aspiring office holders knock on my door here in Crofton, the mail carrier's back is hunched with all the post cards he has to deliver, and of course...the signs. As Realtors we know about signs, don't we? Here, our temporary signs are restricted as to time and location. No earlier than Friday at 3 PM, and down by Monday at 9 AM. State and County highway right of ways are a no-no. Violate these simple rules and your signs are subject to removal...and you're

anne arundel county: Maryland property assessments show a 20% decline - 01/02/10 08:52 PM
Unless you've been living in a cave the last couple of years, this property assessment decline in Maryland real estate shouldn't come as a surprise. The State of Maryland reassesses 1/3 of the properties in the State every year. The ones coming out of the reassessment process now were last assessed in 2005-2006. In many communities, the height of the housing market. Late 2006 is when many Realtors saw the market begin to decline in value. The question many home owners are asking is, "since my property has declined in value, will I see a reduction in taxes?" Unfortunately, the answer

anne arundel county: ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY MD MANDATES NEW CONSTRUCTION SPRINKLERS - 01/06/09 08:56 PM
Congratulations to the Anne Arundel County Council, who voted 6 - 1, to mandate sprinkler systems in ALL new home construction. Prior to this ruling, single family homes were exempt. County firefighters have been lobbying for the bill for several years. New home builders have opposed the bill because of the added expense during construction. The additional cost of the sprinklers will have to be passed on the home buyer. This expense could add an additional several thousand dollars to already pricey homes in the County. Home builders wanted a bill that would mimic the one in Howard County. There, buyers
