"Was Santa Good to You?" - 12/31/06 12:07 AM
Okay, so I apologize in advance, but I couldn't refuse!
The Jacobson Family had another wonderfully warm and memorable Christmas celebration this year. Even though our daughter Emily was not able to be with us, our cherished Aunt Nancy from Chicago, and our oldest son's girlfriend, Alex, joined us for the festivities,
We came home from church, built a fire, and gathered around the tree. Yours Truly read the Christmas Story and then I prayed, thanking God for all the blessings of the past year and for His constant faithfulness to us.
And then, Santa's Helper started passing out the presents. We take turns opening … (23 comments)

"Why Isn't It Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas?" - 12/24/06 03:20 AM
First, don't get me wrong, I am especially thankful this Christmas for all the blessings in my life. I have an incredible best friend and wife of nearly 25 years, and 3 of the greatest sons a father could ever ask for. What's not to be festive about?
Well, I'm out driving around earlier tonight, and the radio is playing one of those standard-issue favorites, "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" and my eyes start to well up. "Why don't I feel like it's Christmas? Is there some kind of Scrooge virus goin' around?"
It certainly didn't help for us to go out … (17 comments)

"The View from Here!" - Life on the Kitsap Peninsula - 12/18/06 01:31 AM

One of the many things I enjoy about my involvement here on ActiveRain is the opportunity I have to showcase the area where I work, live, and play - the picturesque Kitsap Peninsula in scenic Washington State.
My family roots go down deep in Washington soil. My mom was born out on the coast, near the edge of the Olympic Rain Forest. My grandparents lived in many places throughout the western half of the State, ending up in Everett, where my grandfather captained a tugboat. My aunt and uncle lived on the bluff in Mukeltio, overlooking the beautiful expanse of the Puget … (11 comments)

"Finding Your Sushi Fix" - Life on the Kitsap Peninsula - 12/12/06 05:55 PM

Over the years, whenever we've moved, one of the first things I've done is to scope out the closest and best sources for fresh sushi. Imagine my difficulty when we moved to Lawrence, Kansas?!?! It wasn't until just before we left that a sushi bar/Japanese restaurant finally came to the area. Go figure!
When we first arrived here in Silverdale, Washington, I naturally assumed that there would be a plethora (thank you, Three Amigos!) of sushi bars and Japanese restaurants, given our close proximity to the ocean.
NOT!

To read more about finding the illusive fresh sushi here on the … (39 comments)

"Central Market" - Local Business on the Kitsap Peninsula - 12/07/06 02:03 AM
One of the challenges of relocating to a new area is finding the best places for shopping. Locating good grocery stores is usually not too difficult. Most of the major food chains have stores within the limits of most towns and cities. It's finding those really exemplary and unique markets, the ones that cater to the more discerning, high-end shopper, and have every conceivable foodstuff possible, that tend to be rather daunting.
Fortunately, for us here on the Kitsap Peninsula in scenic Washington, we have Central Market in Poulsbo.
Owned & operated by a local independent retail grocery company, and founded in 1957, … (23 comments)

March Madness: "What are Brackets?" - 12/06/06 11:36 AM
Prior to living here on the beautiful Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State, my family and I lived for 10 years in Lawrence, Kansas, home of Kansas University and the storied "Jayhawks" basketball program.
Living in a college town really helped to give us a greater appreciation for collegiate sports. At the time, Roy Williams was the Head Coach and he ran an excellent program. There was never any scandals or recruiting violations that seem to be somewhat commonplace these days, and almost all of the athletes graduated in the top of their class. We quickly became fully vested Jayhawk fans. Next to a day … (15 comments)

SUBASE Bangor, WA - Voted Best Overall Base by the Navy Times - 12/03/06 02:47 PM
Back in the late '70's, I was proudly serving as a Radioman onboard the USS George Washington (SSBN598), the world's first nuclear ballistic submarine. Shortly after refit at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, CA, we transited up along the West Coast, finding our way into the waters of the picturesque Hood Canal, and made port at the newly constructed Bangor Subase, situated along the scenic shores of the Kitsap Peninsula.
I can remember standing watch up topside, looking out over the majestic splendor of the Olympic Mountain Range and the deep blue waters of Hood Canal, and thinking to myself, how … (14 comments)
