Shawshank Redemption and Short Sales - Kitsap County WA Real Estate - 12/23/11 03:46 PM
One of my favorite movies is 'Shawshank Redemption' - the story of Andy Dufresne, a young banking executive who spends nearly two decades doing hard-time in Shawshank State Prison for the murder of his wife and her lover despite his claims of innocence. Andy overcomes tremendous adversity, and through dogged determination and extreme patience, over a span of almost 20 years, is able to tunnel through solid walls, crawl through 500 feet of underground raw sewage pipe, and make good his escape. Wikipedia offers us the following definition of Strategic Default: A strategic default is the decision by a borrower to stop making payments (i.e., to default) on a debt despite having the financial ability to make the payments. This is particularly associated with residential and commercial mortgages, in which case it usually occurs after a substantial drop in the house's price such that the debt owed is (considerably) greater than the value of the property — the property has negative equity or is "underwater" — and is expected to remain so for the foreseeable future, such as following the bursting of a real estate bubble.
