The Chattanooga Renaissance Oktoberfest was held this past weekend. Despite the threat of rain and the cool weather the turnout was good. Music, food, activities and fun times highlighted the event. The proceeds went to help the Chattanooga Education, Arts, and Culture programs.

arts: Chattanooga Sculpture - Ascending Path in Renaissance Park - 09/06/08 10:37 PM
Chattanooga is full of wonderful statuary. One of the most intriguing is the Ascending Path. This is an award winning sculpture, being recognized as one of America's Best Public Art Projects by Americans for the Arts in Philadelphia.

The sculpture is a 12 foot tall bridge with 7 bronze figures representing the Trail of Tears  and the African American contraband camp that was close to the site of Renaissance Park.

The sculptors who were commissioned to create this piece commemorating "weary travelers who have crossed the (Tennessee) River down though history."

arts: Chattanooga Sculpture - Hunter Museum Sculpture Garden, Full Count by John Dreyfuss - 08/30/08 09:55 PM
Chattanooga is blessed with an active arts community. A brief walk around almost any part of the city will bring you to a random piece of art. Sometimes the art is surprising. Always it is striking.
One of my favorites is Full Count by John Dreyfuss. Completed in 1990. For a long time the sculpture was in the Aquarium complex. It is now moved to the Hunter Museum Sculpture Garden.

Tennessee and Chattanooga in particular are top relocation choices for the retired who want to be active. This is according to a recent MSN report.
Comments include "We wanted a friendlier climate," " I don't think we are retirement community material" so we chose Chattanooga, "It's an economical place to live," boomers want to be in a real, live, diverse community that offers a lot to do."
The MSN article mentions "hiking and biking trails, an aquarium and a thriving local arts scene," about which see my Top 5 in Chattanooga post.
