The Legend Of Pappy Ferguson

Before I get to the train robbery, I need to set you up with a shorter story.  I was told this story by  my next door neighbor, and it came up as my wife and I were visiting and spotted a black snake on a bush next to the patio.

I knew that the snake was harmless but my neighbor was horrified and related the time that she had been outside, for what she thought was a short period of time, and figured it would be ok to leave the sliding glass door to … (2 comments)

Part Five:  The Best Spot For You
Well, up until about a week ago the dam had been running continuously for weeks with at least a half a generator online.  Problem:  Not enough dissolved oxygen in the water to sustain the needs of the fish.  This was caused by the record levels of water in the Greers Ferry Lake.
Besides the continuous generation to stir things up, Game and Fish was not stocking Rainbows upstream of Jon's Pocket.  Their thinking was that it would stress current stock plus the stockers they were adding with the dissolved O2 being so low. … (0 comments)

There was an article recently in the Little Rock and the Memphis paper about the Little Red River and how the river was still "swollen from recent rains".  That is not exactly the case.  They have been running two generators 24/7 for the last several weeks to lower the lake levels from flood stage to normal pool as a result from the spring rains, but the river is always at these levels when the dam is operating both units.

There have been 12 boats sunk this summer … (0 comments)

Well enough about canoeing.
Let's talk about fishing.  Slam dunk, if you are a fly fisherman you are going to be interested in a spot close to one of the shoals.  There are a lot of folks up here that literally just step into the river from their property and they are on their favorite spot.
One does not have to have property on a shoal to be wading quickly.   A short boat ride is all it takes to get from deep water to skinny water and … (9 comments)

Part One: The Best Spot For You

The amazing thing about the river and maybe all small streams is their sheer beauty.  "Sheer beauty" is not such a manly description but I can't think of another way to describe the river.
I have canoed the Little Red River from the dam to the Ramsey Access, about 29 miles in all, and some stretches more than once.  There seem to be distinct areas of the river that are different than others, similar in some ways and quite different in others.  All great spots, but with advantages and disadvantages as compared to other spots.
