nell hills summer flowers

I just read my first Mary Carol Garrity book, Stylish Weddings, and oh my, I can hardly wait to hear her speak at The SDP Conference in Aug! The photos are beautiful, the ideas, recipes, hints, tips and tricks are not just practical and inspiring but do-able. This summer we are going to be having some casual extended family outdoor meals at our home and I've been gleaning ideas from this book. Just because we'll be sitting around a fire pit roasting hot dogs, doesn't mean I can't have the lawn and patio decked out and looking lovely!

I can't wait to get my hands and nose into her other books, and I can hardly wait to hear and meet her in person!

This week I was among a couple hundred color experts enjoying the beautiful surroundings at Newcastle Golf Club in Newcastle WA for Benjamin Moores Color Pulse 2009 High Tea. The view, the view, the view~ wow.  I could learn to play golf just to hang out and enjoy the view, but I was there to learn about the color influences for the next couple of years. Mary Hoffman gave the wonderful presentation with fabulous color filled photos that inspired each of us.

Four area's of influence, Raw, Urban Silence, Simplexity, and Private Identity, all come together under the simplicity of the Eco friendly green umbrella. I think I enjoyed the theme "Raw" the best. Sand 9grey scale) will be the major influential color; sand in all it's colors, from the white, black and green sands of Hawaii, and all the different shades from beaches all over the world. Pared with sea and forest, you get an earthy pallet.

Raw wood makes you think of wood farmhouse tables, orange crates. Sand in cinder blocks and concrete.  Under the Raw theme, strapping will be an influence in design, creating order from chaos. I laughed as I thought of the strapping idea; think tape holding your orange crates together in a dorm room. Think cinder-blocks stacked with cedar planks to house your books, TV and stereo (my first piece of furniture in my first apartment) Raw makes use of what we already have. . . . a lot like interior redesign!

Urban Silence- bringing the great out of doors colors into the city to slow down; greens, yellows and reds, Copper and browns, with lots of sheen.

Simplexity- refocusing on how we see form and color. Repetitive shapes help bring order from chaos. Darker shades of green, yellow, white (Grey is the new neutral!)

Private Identity, we want our space, we want to to be socially responsible, yet we want to leave our mark. . . Asia continues to influence color and design, especially Vietnam. Also think Spain and it's warm color pallet.

So how does this effect the Real Estate market? When buyers are looking for a new home, having on trend neutral colors in the home appeals to the turn-key house hunter.

Karen Otto's post prompts me to write and share another way we need to be safe. Last week while parked in a covered garage, my car was broken into. Fortunately, they didn't get much value for their efforts. It took two days to realize what I was missing (my bag with furniture glides, my Sherwin Williams paint chip box, my business binder with forms, and notes, and the little machine to accept credit cards). Thankfully, the next day the bag and paint chip box were found and returned. Nothing was missing, all my forms were untouched, but they really did mess with my poor brain; they took sections of the paint box and moved them from one section to another and I have to go through and sort those out. (I've often threaten to hire office help just to restock paint chip samples, the job I dread doing!)  Unfortunately, we have to replace the broken door lock. I hate the thought of not being able to use my rig as more off site storage", but I may just have to do that. Be safe where ever you are!

Your Changing Furniture Needs

Times Of Your Life -  itsap News Group April 26, 2008

Furniture needs change as we experience more life. When we were younger, beanbag chairs were probably the chair of preference since they could handle our gangly frames. Now, we need that higher seating height and arm support to help us get out of our chairs! With the wide range of selection of furniture styles and fabrics offered today, furnishings for those special needs no longer need to look institutional or unappealing.

When you are selecting new furnishings to go into your home, or a parent's home, here a few pointers to help you on your way.

~Consider the health and physical condition of who will be the using the chair. Are they able to easily rise from and sit down on the sofa or into a chair? When shopping, make sure the arms of the chair or sofa are of good quality and sturdy enough to help support weight, and are at a good height for the user.

~Upholstery selection. You do not want your covering to be so slick you will slip right out of the chair, yet it should be easy enough to slide in and out as you rise or sit. Leather may be a good choice.

~Can the fabric be easily cleaned? The fabric or upholstery selection should be easily and thoroughly cleanable. Leather or microfiber can be good selections for some pieces.

~Is it comfortable? Sit in the chair and allow plenty of time to really get comfortable. Make sure the chair or sofa is worthy of your time! Can your feet easily rest on the floor? Does the armrest meet your natural resting position, or do you need to slump downward to rest your arms? Is the sofa long enough to stretch out on for that quick afternoon snooze? Is the seating deep enough to add or remove pillows for different needs?

~Lift chairs come in many styles, from traditional to modern, with a large selection of fabric patterns and colors and can be ordered "sized to fit." These chairs serve to both lift and recline and come with options such as different levels of reclining positions.

~Is the piece pleasing in appearance to the buyer? No purchase is satisfying unless you really love it.

An Interior Redesigner can help you with your selection of furnishings by giving you options with space planning. By providing a fresh perspective, a Redesigner can arrange the new piece(s) along side the more established pieces, creating a seamless flow and tying the look together with your treasured art and accessories. By creating and establishing proper furniture placement the space will not only be a pleasing and comfortable environment, but one that will take into account the changing needs for safety and maneuverability.

Everyone who attended the SIFsters Round-table in late January had such a great time meeting one another and discussing staging, we all decided we wanted to meet again! All who are interested in attending are welcome!

Last summer this 1978 split level home ON the lake was on the market for 6 months with nothing to show for it. When the seller was ready to re-list, her agent recommended to have me stage the home. The seller was willing to do anything I suggested, though she thought it "was dumb" to put money in the home. She did everything I asked. Replaced the dated carpet, painted most of the rooms, replaced the dated light fixtures, pressure washed the house and walkway, removed a couple Rhodie's that were overgrown and blocking the entry way and removed a few pieces of furniture. She even had new sod put in.

The house went on the market Monday morning, and on Friday of that week, she received an offer. The buyers drove by the house, fell in love, and then toured the home and made the offer. Hmm. . . the buyer DROVE by the house and fell in love! Wow. That means curb appeal is important. That means first impressions count. That means money spent to update the house is important. Huh, guess we stagers know what we're talking about!

Unfortunately, I did not (Ugh!) take a before shot of the front of the house, but you can see how nice and open the front of the house looks now. Before, standing at this angle, you could not see the garage doors due to the overgrown Rhodie's (she had them moved to the other side of the yard, and where the sod is, there use to be patchy moss and weeds.

After Staging, using their furnishings, when you walk into the front room, you see the fire place, not the back of the sectional.

This seller was a delight to work with, and I'm so happy I now have another believer in staging who is telling all her friends and coworkers!

My husband and I volunteer at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton serving holiday meals to patient family members with loved ones in ICU. We do this because we know what it's like to have loved ones in ICU. The uncertainty, the fear, the urgency and the unknown all set your emotions in a uproar. Being able to have a home cooked meal served to you while you wait is such a comfort. We can't do anything for the loved one, but we can help their loved ones relax for a few moments and think about something less stressful for a few minutes while they eat.

A few weeks ago we attended the annual training day for volunteers. The usual information on hygiene as you go about your tasks, the HIPAA rules and regulations, hospital safety and security, and accolades from the staff thanking the volunteers for  helping them do their job was given, all useful information and reminders.  Towards the end of the training, a short inspirational movie called "Give 'em the pickle"  by Bob Farrell, founder of Farrell's Ice Cream Parlors, was shown. The stories were truly inspirational and have stayed in my mind as I work each day at serving my clients in the best possible way. The website is full of stories that encourage and give you ideas of how you can best serve your clients in ways that make them remember you for all the right reasons.

I hope you will be inspired to go the extra mile and give your clients "the pickle"!
