This week I was among a couple hundred color experts enjoying the beautiful surroundings at Newcastle Golf Club in Newcastle WA for Benjamin Moores Color Pulse 2009 High Tea. The view, the view, the view~ wow. I could learn to play golf just to hang out and enjoy the view, but I was there to learn about the color influences for the next couple of years. Mary Hoffman gave the wonderful presentation with fabulous color filled photos that inspired each of us.

Four area's of influence, Raw, Urban Silence, Simplexity, and Private Identity, all come together under the simplicity of the Eco friendly green umbrella. I think I enjoyed the theme "Raw" the best. Sand 9grey scale) will be the major influential color; sand in all it's colors, from the white, black and green sands of Hawaii, and all the different shades from beaches all over the world. Pared with sea and forest, you get an earthy pallet.

Raw wood makes you think of wood farmhouse tables, orange crates. Sand in cinder blocks and concrete. Under the Raw theme, strapping will be an influence in design, creating order from chaos. I laughed as I thought of the strapping idea; think tape holding your orange crates together in a dorm room. Think cinder-blocks stacked with cedar planks to house your books, TV and stereo (my first piece of furniture in my first apartment) Raw makes use of what we already have. . . . a lot like interior redesign!

Urban Silence- bringing the great out of doors colors into the city to slow down; greens, yellows and reds, Copper and browns, with lots of sheen.

Simplexity- refocusing on how we see form and color. Repetitive shapes help bring order from chaos. Darker shades of green, yellow, white (Grey is the new neutral!)

Private Identity, we want our space, we want to to be socially responsible, yet we want to leave our mark. . . Asia continues to influence color and design, especially Vietnam. Also think Spain and it's warm color pallet.

So how does this effect the Real Estate market? When buyers are looking for a new home, having on trend neutral colors in the home appeals to the turn-key house hunter.

Last week while parked in a covered garage, my car was broken into. Fortunately, they didn't get much value for their efforts. It took two days to realize what I was missing (my bag with furniture glides, my Sherwin Williams paint chip box, my business binder with forms, and notes, and the little machine to accept credit cards). Thankfully, the next day the bag and paint chip box were found and returned. Nothing was missing, all my forms were untouched, but they really did mess with my poor brain; they took sections of the paint box and moved them from one section to another and I have to go through and sort those out. (I've often threaten to hire office help just to restock paint chip samples, the job I dread doing!) Unfortunately, we have to replace the broken door lock. I hate the thought of not being able to use my rig as more off site storage", but I may just have to do that. Be safe where ever you are!

When we were younger, beanbag chairs were probably the chair of preference since they could handle our gangly frames. Now, we need that higher seating height and arm support to help us get out of our chairs! With the wide range of selection of furniture styles and fabrics offered today, furnishings for those special needs no longer need to look institutional or unappealing.

When you are selecting new furnishings to go into your home, or a parent's home, here a few pointers to help you on your way.

~Consider the health and physical condition of who will be the using the chair. Are they able to easily rise from and sit down on the sofa or into a chair? When shopping, make sure the arms of the chair or sofa are of good quality and sturdy enough to help support weight, and are at a good height for the user.

~Upholstery selection. You do not want your covering to be so slick you will slip right out of the chair, yet it should be easy enough to slide in and out as you rise or sit. Leather may be a good choice.

~Can the fabric be easily cleaned? The fabric or upholstery selection should be easily and thoroughly cleanable. Leather or microfiber can be good selections for some pieces.

~Is it comfortable? Sit in the chair and allow plenty of time to really get comfortable. Make sure the chair or sofa is worthy of your time! Can your feet easily rest on the floor? Does the armrest meet your natural resting position, or do you need to slump downward to rest your arms? Is the sofa long enough to stretch out on for that quick afternoon snooze? Is the seating deep enough to add or remove pillows for different needs?

~Lift chairs come in many styles, from traditional to modern, with a large selection of fabric patterns and colors and can be ordered "sized to fit." These chairs serve to both lift and recline and come with options such as different levels of reclining positions.

~Is the piece pleasing in appearance to the buyer? No purchase is satisfying unless you really love it.

An Interior Redesigner can help you with your selection of furnishings by giving you options with space planning. By providing a fresh perspective, a Redesigner can arrange the new piece(s) along side the more established pieces, creating a seamless flow and tying the look together with your treasured art and accessories. By creating and establishing proper furniture placement the space will not only be a pleasing and comfortable environment, but one that will take into account the changing needs for safety and maneuverability.

Roberta Anderson is a Home Design Consultant and owner of Anderson Homes Redesigned LLC.
Last summer this 1978 split level home ON the lake was on the market for 6 months with nothing to show for it. When the seller was ready to re-list, her agent recommended to have me stage the home. The seller was willing to do anything I suggested, though she thought it "was dumb" to put money in the home. She did everything I asked. Replaced the dated carpet, painted most of the rooms, replaced the dated light fixtures, pressure washed the house and walkway, removed a couple Rhodie's that were overgrown and blocking the entry way and removed a few pieces of furniture. She even had new sod put in.

The house went on the market Monday morning, and on Friday of that week, she received an offer. The buyers drove by the house, fell in love, and then toured the home and made the offer. Hmm. . . the buyer DROVE by the house and fell in love! Wow. That means curb appeal is important. That means first impressions count. That means money spent to update the house is important. Huh, guess we stagers know what we're talking about!

Unfortunately, I did not (Ugh!) take a before shot of the front of the house, but you can see how nice and open the front of the house looks now. Before, standing at this angle, you could not see the garage doors due to the overgrown Rhodie's (she had them moved to the other side of the yard, and where the sod is, there use to be patchy moss and weeds.

After Staging, using their furnishings, when you walk into the front room, you see the fire place, not the back of the sectional.

This seller was a delight to work with, and I'm so happy I now have another believer in staging who is telling all her friends and coworkers!

My husband and I volunteer at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton serving holiday meals to patient family members with loved ones in ICU. We do this because we know what it's like to have loved ones in ICU. The uncertainty, the fear, the urgency and the unknown all set your emotions in a uproar. Being able to have a home cooked meal served to you while you wait is such a comfort. We can't do anything for the loved one, but we can help their loved ones relax for a few moments and think about something less stressful for a few minutes while they eat.

A few weeks ago we attended the annual training day for volunteers. The usual information on hygiene as you go about your tasks, the HIPAA rules and regulations, hospital safety and security, and accolades from the staff thanking the volunteers for helping them do their job was given, all useful information and reminders. Towards the end of the training, a short inspirational movie called "Give 'em the pickle" by Bob Farrell, founder of Farrell's Ice Cream Parlors, was shown. The stories were truly inspirational and have stayed in my mind as I work each day at serving my clients in the best possible way. The website is full of stories that encourage and give you ideas of how you can best serve your clients in ways that make them remember you for all the right reasons.

I hope you will be inspired to go the extra mile and give your clients "the pickle"!

So often I have been asked if I know of a good handy man. I wanted to let you know I have found a great handy-man, one I can whole-heartedy recommend! There isn't anything this man can't do; he's done it all and does it quite well! (His wife has kept him busy the past 27 plus years building, repairing and remodeling their home.)

As the grandson of a blacksmith, the son of a machinist, Roger Anderson, owner of Roger's Repair is the best there is! He spent his childhood working with and learning from his father, Andy (Roger) Anderson. As a well respected machinist who worked for many years at PSNS, Andy was known throughout the community as the guy to go to for anything needing to be done right the first time. Roger not only learned all his father had to teach, he's built his skills and abilities on his own home, helping neighbors and friends and working in Yakima on mission projects on the Yakama Reservation.

Roger's focus is helping the elderly, providing quality repairs, and proving to be honest, dependable and reliable.

Roger's Repair "the Handy Son you Always Wanted"

Roger Anderson~Jack of All Trades~ is licenced, bonded, insured and has a list of references a mile long.

Roger can be reached at 360.471.7643, or you can email him at RogerAndWood@gmail.com
contractors # ROGERRL931M3

Please don't hesitate to call if you have any questions!

Though I may never incorporate this color into my makeup, it will show up in my fashion and home accessories.

What does this mean to the housing market? While I would not select this paint color for a home going on the market, I would place a large vase of iris' on a table, incorporate in throw pillows, and bedding, and I would select this for a new home owner! This color on a wall would give a room a bold and elegant look. Emotionally it anchors the soul, creating a contemplative mood.

As I sit and look at this swatch, it makes me think of spring and summer flowers, a nice thought as I watch the snow melt.
My goodness! What a storm we've had today.

Here in my neck of the woods, in East Bremerton, we received 4 inches of snow on Sunday, and this morning I woke up to rain, rain, rain. We had 2 new rivers going across fields, down the driveway and across our lawn.

We thought we would loose our drive way in the early afternoon,

and then I thought I was going to loose my water loving Black Lab when she got sucked into the culvert under our driveway. Moments later she popped out on the other side, coughing, sputtering and bleeding from the couple of little cuts on her head. OK, I had enough excitement for one day, but not my Lab. . . . after a good rubdown, she was ready to head back out and into the rivers.

I've been keeping watch on the road closures in town today, and looking at the photos people have submitted to The Kitsap Sun. My oldest son is a volunteer fire fighter at the Tracyton Fire Station. I'm sure he's gonna have a few stories to tell tomorrow.

Keep dry and keep safe.

My hubby and I and our greatest friends spent the day "camping" and enjoying the God's wonderful creation.

We drove up to Mt Walker and enjoyed the views

Then headed to Dosiwallips St Park. After selecting a campsite along the river, we enjoyed roasting potatoes and cooking steaks over a rip roaring fire (We skipped the marshmallows and dove right into the choc bars after the meal!)

Before we headed home, we took a long walk beside the river and on the Maple Leaf Trail.

What a beautiful day!

This article appeared in a special supplement to the Kitsap News Group, "Time of Your Life" autumn 2007

When the decision has been made to downsize to a smaller home, whether it is for your parents or for yourself, emotions can be the hardest thing to overcome in making good decisions, so planning ahead is the key to a successful move. The thought of packing everything up, as well as the physical aspect of the actual move, can be overwhelming. When you begin to emotionally let go of the attachment to both the home itself and the items that represent many aspects of your life that have been collected over the years, it can make the move a bit easier. Remembering that the selling of the home is a business decision can also be quite helpful.

Selecting pieces of furniture, art, accessories that mean the most to you, and those items you must have in your new home will allow you to determine what is not needed and what can be given to family and friends, donated to your favorite charities, or sold at auction or consignment stores.

In either a buyer's or seller's market there are a few necessary steps required to prepare your home, ensuring you will receive the highest profit for the sale of your largest investment. Today's buyers lead busy lives and are looking for move-in ready homes. Buyers are unwilling to pay top dollar for homes in need of repair or total transformation to bring them into the 21st century.

You must look at the home from the buyer's perspective; they have no emotional attachment. When buyers are looking for a home, they carry with them all their hopes and dreams for a better life. A certified professional home stager's skill lies in creating a series of first impressions that help buyers visualize themselves living in that home. The stager knows you are competing against other homes in your local real estate market and will work to make sure your home is the "WOW House" without considering any of your emotional attachments. A home stager can help select items to update the look and feel of the home, as well as "set the stage" to make the home as appealing to as many buyers as possible. By eliminating excess furnishings, updating certain items, recommending pre-packing, and arranging furnishings, art and accessories, the home stager can enhance the selling features of the home, creating a series of positive "first impressions."

A stager can recommend key people to help with the downsizing and sales process:

•· A residential home appraiser can give you accurate information on the value of the home, as well as what improvements or renovations will increase the value and be worth the investment of your time and money.

•· A home inspector can help eliminate any surprises at closing time that might cancel the deal or can have a negative effect on the final selling price for the home. Making sure your home is in tip-top condition before placing it on the market is time and money well spent.

•· A hard working Realtor® will have your best interest in mind when marketing the home.

By preparing your home, taking care of any maintenance items and hiring a certified staging professional, you are positioning yourself to reap greater rewards for your largest and most valuable investment. The relatively small investment of preparing your home for a quick sale will help you toward your goal of moving on to the new home that will better meet your needs.

Roberta Anderson, IRIS, ODSP, DCC

Home Design Consultant

Anderson Homes Redesigned LLC

http://www.andersonhomesredesigned.com/

360.471.HOME (4663)

The SDP annual Conference held in Chicago this year was wonderful. Some one mentioned that when the market is slow, it was a good time to continue your education. I have to say the conference certainly did just that, not to mention encourage, motivate, support and inspire. We met new friends, renewed old friendships, laughed and cried. I think it is safe to say a good time was had by all!

Here is a link to the highlights of The SDP's WInds of Success conference

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXuyq7AKNGk

Emotions: Seller's and Buyer's

One of the hardest aspects of selling your home is preparing your self emotionally. Whether you've lived in your home for just a few years or for many, many years, "letting go" is the first step to prepare your house for market. A potential buyer won't care if you brought your babies home to this house or spent "good money" on the drapes 15 years ago! Buyers will not even care if you dreamed and designed, scrimped and saved for years for all the customized details. You now need to look at your house as a commodity, an object to be sold.

When you hire a professional stager, s/he helps you by looking at the house with the eyes of a buyer. By highlighting the homes' best features and by creating a series of first impressions, s/he helps "set the stage" for a buyer to connect with the home emotionally. Buyers carry with them all their hopes and dreams of love and prestige into a new home and the series of first impressions created by your stager can maximize and intensify those emotions.

Having a home staged and placed on the market can be emotionally challenging as you prepare to say good-bye to the past, yet it will also be a profitable challenge; studies show staged homes sell quicker, and at top dollar. Roberta Anderson, Home Design Consultant

You know, the very first room you see when you walk in the front door. Talk about a mixed first impression! It would have made a buyer wonder if this was the living room or the gym or the play room? Another thought could have ran through their head if they got past this room would be, "Why isn't there any furniture in here? What's WRONG? If the seller can't afford furniture, can I afford to live here?"

Bringing in furnishings made a huge change to this space, making it worthy of the home, and asking price~
