adt home security systems: Protecting Yourself and Family During The Holidays - 12/05/10 11:07 PM
Criminals share the same calendar as you and I. Their lives are no different than ours. They anticipate the holidays and feel the same pressures to provide. But they “shop” in a different way than we do. I’m already seeing news reports of “Woman attacked while shopping” and “Teens jump man leaving jewelry store”
The only thing that separates us from them is the boundaries they have established. While you and I are civilized humans who feel sympathy, empathy and understand personal boundaries, the bad guys don’t.
It is an unfortunate fact that we must cope with this sub-species that views … (5 comments)

adt home security systems: 10 Very Stupid Criminals - 09/23/10 07:54 AM
Dumb Criminals are performing stupid crimes all the time. Here is a list of 10 stupid criminal stories.
#1 Firefighters said it can’t get more ironic than this — an arsonist breaks into a convenience store, steals scratch-off lottery tickets, tries to cover his tracks by setting a fire, and in the process, sets himself on fire.
#2 Robber walked in to a store with duct tape wrapped around his head to conceal his face. The store manager had some duct tape of his own. He had a wooden club wrapped with duct tape that eventually sent the suspect fleeing the … (4 comments)

adt home security systems: Make Personal Safety a Priority - 08/27/10 08:10 PM
We often hear people (including myself) drone on at how the system is broken and how good guys end up in jail and bad guys are released on good behavior. The criminal justice system is far from fair. Too often bad people are let out only to re-offend and sometimes do worse the second or third time around. Securing your home is crucial way of protecting your home and family.
The Seattle PI reports “a man who police say beat an elderly woman and burglarized her home has schizoid-affective disorder, was released from jail three days before the attack and had … (1 comments)

adt home security systems: As Crime Witness, Security Camera Can Speak Volumes - 07/08/10 08:04 AM
Back when dinosaurs roamed the planet law enforcement had to look for witnesses, bystanders, and get on their hands and knees to look for the slightest hair or clue that would help them crack the case. They still do all that stuff today, but one of the first things they look for are security cameras in the vicinity of the crime scene that will tell them the rest of the story.
In Philadelphia, homicide detectives investigated a woman who went missing and was eventually found murdered. After the discovery law enforcement began tracing back her steps and detectives started looking for … (1 comments)

adt home security systems: Safety Tips: Home Burglary Prevention - 06/27/10 11:08 AM
My AC is on, that means it’s summer time. It also means that occasionally the windows may be open, and because we are in the yard the doors sometimes are unlocked. As a result we are slightly more vulnerable to the bad guy. But this doesn’t mean that your guard should be down.
The FBI reports that more burglaries occur during the summer months than any other time of year and that every home is a potential target. According to U.S. Department of Justice statistics, an American home is broken into about every 15 seconds. The best defense against burglary is … (3 comments)

adt home security systems: Summertime Scams Are Coming - 06/03/10 05:19 PM
As the spring rolls through and the summer heats up, the bad guy is planning his next seasonal scams. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has on average over 15,000 complaints a year related to travel, vacation or timeshare scams. It’s important to have summer safety in mind when planning your next summer vacations.
OK, I’ll admit it. I got scammed in a timeshare deal, kind of. I got what I paid for, but many lies were told to get me to sign on the dotted line. Whenever someone offers you money or dinner or tickets to anything in exchange for your … (3 comments)

adt home security systems: Reality Actor Jailed Six Months For Burglarizing Orlando Bloom’s Home - 05/18/10 07:11 PM
Orlando Bloom’s break-in is one of several robberies linked to Hollywood’s “Bling Ring,” teenage gang of celebrity-obsessed wannabes who allegedly stole from Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Megan Fox and others.
Their methods were simple. They tracked their victims by using social media, Facebook and Twitter. They knew when they were home and when they were away. They even used Google Earth to scope out their homes.
Police estimated that from October 2008 to August 2009, the “Bling Ring” stole more than $3 million in jewelry and high-end designer brands.

adt home security systems: Does a Home Alarm System Really Prevent Break-ins? - 05/13/10 07:17 PM
Back in the day, the home was occupied all day. Mom was a “stay at home” working all day taking care of the kids and people had bigger families too. Often there were 3, 4, and even 5 generations under the same roof. Today, Mom works out of the house, dad works and the kids are at school. Today, grandparents are healthier and more self sufficient, and sometimes on their own traveling. Today, the house is vacant.
So, what to do? Invest in an alarm? According to a Rutgers study, alarms are a valuable crime fighting tool.
“Data showed … (1 comments)

adt home security systems: Home Security Tips When Selling Your House - 04/24/10 06:04 AM
Selling a home is a big task requiring lots of time and effort. Most people use a professional real estate agent to help them sell (which I recommend), but many today are doing it themselves. When opening your home to strangers the risks to your families’ personal security increase dramatically.

First and foremost recognize that when you are placing ads and alerting the world to come inside and take a peek, you are going to have to make a few adjustments and begin to think differently in this process.

Secure valuables. Lock up or remove anything that … (1 comments)

adt home security systems: Building Out a Home Security System - 04/14/10 04:50 PM
Home security alarms are just one part of your overall system. Generally, the alarm can be wired or installed as a wireless home security system and consists of keypads at each entrance, motion sensors, glass break sensors and open door and window sensors. The alarm panel should be installed in a relatively secure enclosure and in a relatively secure room within the house. The alarms communications go to the monitoring company and the local police can be wired or wireless or both. Wired are best and a cell wireless back up is even better.

Additional layers of protection include … (2 comments)

adt home security systems: April Foolery and Springtime Home Scams - 04/08/10 03:33 PM
Spring is here! Thank heavens. I’ve had enough cold and rain to last 50 winters. In the Northeast millions of people are pumping out their basements due to record rainfalls. The Boston Globe reports police want you to know that so you don’t get hit twice from the recent rains: once when your property gets damaged, and again when a con artist comes calling at your door looking to rob you.

First, there is no such thing as the “Municipal Water Disaster Department.” But in drenched communities home scammers are posing as inspectors and gaining access to people’s homes.

adt home security systems: 10 Personal Safety and Security Tips - 04/08/10 01:54 AM
Fundamentals: Body language is 55% of communications. That’s your walk, posture, facial expressions and eye contact. Awareness is being alert to your surroundings at all times. Intuition is when the hair on the back of your neck stands on end. Voice tone and pitch equal 35% of communications. The way a person communicates physically and verbally can determine whether or not a predator deems you a good target.
Prevent Abductions: When returning to a parked car, scan the area around your car, be alert to suspicious activity. Be aware of vans. Abductors and rapist open up the side doors and pull … (0 comments)

adt home security systems: Self-revelation Can Help Assemble a Social Security Number - 04/07/10 05:36 AM
I am not done nor will I ever be done sounding that alarm, ringing that bell and informing you about how ridiculous social media is. I was asked in a radio interview today what it will take to get people to recognize they are sharing too much data. In a word, tragedy. When a home is broken into, they install a home security alarm. When someone is mugged, they take a self defense course. When planes fly into buildings, we get frisked. Being smart is understanding risk and being proactive.

Most people are smart enough to NOT give out … (0 comments)

adt home security systems: Be careful Your PC Isn’t Held for Ransom - 04/05/10 01:31 PM
Computerworld reported that a hacker threatened to expose health data and demanded $10 million from a government agency. The alleged ransom note posted on the Virginia DHP Prescription Monitoring Program site claimed that the hacker had backed up and encrypted more than 8 million patient records and 35 million prescriptions and then deleted the original data. “Unfortunately for Virginia, their backups seem to have gone missing, too.” “Uh oh,” posted the hacker.
Holding data hostage is sometimes done using “ransomware” Otherwise known as “ransom software.” The software gets on your PC as the result of you downloading an infected attachment … (24 comments)

adt home security systems: Dumb Criminals – The Best Way to Get Caught? Call 911! - 04/04/10 03:56 PM
In Daytona Beach, Florida, the dumb criminal capital of America, two Florida teenagers are facing charges after breaking into cars. Apparently one teen’s phone was programmed to call 911 and the phone was smarter than the teens and called (maybe accidentally) 911 to inform law enforcement of the crimes taking place.
Dispatchers from the police department listened in at the duo discussing the cars they were breaking into and the stuff that was worth taking. Seems some info was given that directed law enforcement to the parking lot of a local nightclub where the teens were apprehended. Karma man karma. … (0 comments)

adt home security systems: Beware of Door to Door Conmen - 04/04/10 02:55 PM
There are bazillion scammers using a bazillion ruses to get your money. The lowest of the low are the ones who scam the elderly. These same conmen often do it door to door and can be very dangerous.
Con men posing as city employees seem to be the most effective scam. In one incident 2 men posed as city workers who were trimming trees in a neighborhood. One man would knock on the door and schmooze the resident into allowing him into the home. He would then coax the person into the back area of the home while his partner … (1 comments)

adt home security systems: Is Your Facebook Friend a Fed, or Sex Offender? - 03/31/10 09:18 PM
When you think about it, Facebook is weird. Where else in the world do you call people who you don’t know your friends? I probably have about 10-15 friends. Most are acquaintances and the others 400 are total strangers.
There’s a lot of excessive trust in the Facebook world. People have entirely dropped their sense of cynicism when logged on. They have no reason to distrust. People who are your “Friends” are generally those who you “know, like and trust.” In this world, your guard is as down as it will ever be. You are in the safety of your … (41 comments)

adt home security systems: Hollywood Burglars Dubbed the “Bling Ring” - 03/30/10 09:48 AM
Lots and lots of people are looking for their 15 minutes of fame. Some get on reality TV shows, others rescue someone from being hit by a speeding train. But then there are the ones who break into celebrity homes.
Victims include Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Orlando Bloom, Megan Fox and others. A half dozen teens from a hoity toity suburb of LA fancied the celeb lifestyle and considered themselves part of the “in” crowed. There was only one problem, they weren’t celebrities.
But they lived the celeb lifestyle by hanging out in all the clubs, staying up all … (0 comments)

adt home security systems: Watch Out For Caller ID Spoofing - 03/25/10 03:44 AM
Caller ID spoofing is the practice of causing the telephone network to display a number on the recipient’s caller ID display which is not that of the actual originating caller. Similar to e-mail spoofing which can make it appear that a message came from any e-mail address the sender chooses, caller ID spoofing can make a call appear to have come from any phone number. Most people trust caller ID and are unaware of caller ID spoofing. This is obviously a flawed system ripe for fraud.
In Oklahoma, the anti-caller ID spoofing act has passed the Oklahoma House and now heads … (0 comments)
