While on my morning trash collection at the cul-de-sac leading to Moonlight beach in Encintas from the corner of 3rd and C Street, I collected approximately 2-Lbs. of assorted garbage following this weekends BroAm Surf Competition and Music Festival.  Of which, I collected an astounding 124 CIGARETTE BUTTS in a one block area.
As a former smoker in the 70's & 80's, I was as guilty as the next smoker when it came to tossing a butt out the window of my car or stubbing a cigarette out on the ground as I stood outside to have a smoke.  Like thousands … (1 comments)

I received a disturbing call from an old friend this week that got my wife, who is a registered nurse, and myself talking about lifestyle choices that negatively affect each and everyone one of us, putting a strain on our family, friends and communities.
My friend called me from the hospital after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure.  You see, my friend smokes and drinks too much.  He has an addictive personality disorder.  How do I know this?  His poison of choice used to be cocaine.  Once he kicked the cocaine habit and became sober, he replaced his addiction with cigarettes and coffee, then beer, and now … (1 comments)
