White Squirrel Festival In Brevard, NC

This year will mark the 5th Annual White Squirrel Festival and this year's dates are Saturday and Sunday May 24th and the 25th in downtown Brevard, North Carolina. This year will feature the ever popular Squirrel Box Derby which is a go-cart race down Jailhouse hill in downtown Brevard. For the first time this year The Rotary Club of Brevard will sponsor a 5K/10K White Squirrel Race. The music lineup is impressive and over sixteen acts are scheduled for the two days -- ALL FREE. The White Squirrel Festival has been voted "Best Spring Music Festival in Western North Carolina" in a reader news poll by the Asheville Citizen Times. Now here's the story behind our areas white squirrels as I've been told and from what I can find out -- documented. Allegedly a Mr. H. H. Mull introduced the unique creatures into the Brevard area. He was supposed to have been given a pair by a Mr. Black of Madison, Florida. After a carnival truck had overturned near his home he spotted some of these white squirrels running about in his pecan grove. He captured a pair and gave them to his friend, Mr. Mull.

Mr. Mull's daughter had wanted to breed them but this wasn't working in captivity. In 1951 one of the squirrels escaped so Mr. Mull set the other one free as well. It didn't take long before different locations were noticing white squirrels. They are loved throughout the area and in 1986 the Brevard City Council voted unanimously to pass an ordinance protecting them. You might think these squirrels are albinos, but, they have normal dark eyes. They also interbreed with our more common greys and produce a mixed litter.

They have now migrated to Etowah and are being spotted more and more in the Hendersonville area. They are beautiful and the first time I saw one I thought it was small statuary in a front yard -- until it ran!

Flat Rock North Carolina History

The Cherokee Nation once proclaimed what today we know and love as Flat Rock as their hunting grounds. For early settlers it became a place business people, planters and their families to escape malaria and the oppressive summer heat/humidity of coastal South Carolina.

Merchants from the seaport of what is now known as Charleston would meet with Cherokee braves on the "Great Flat Rock" to do their trading of beads, trinkets, etc. It was in 1807 that the "Great Flat Rock" gave the site a name for a pioneer settlement that would grow up around it in what would become Hendersonville NC.

By 1827 Flat Rock was thriving (the Buncombe Turnpike had been completed from Asheville to join the Poinsett Highway in upper South Carolina.) All kinds of industry starting taking place such as grist and lumber mills, brick makers, taverns and on and on -- it was a boom time.

Than a member of a rich banking family in England found Flat Rock to have a very healthful climate and settled here with his family. The prestige of the area only went up from there and Flat Rock and the general area became a mecca for an escape from the oppresive hot and humid areas further south and many summer "cottages" were built, which would be considered exclusive even by today's standards.

Flat Rock was incorporated in 1995 and today is goverened by a mayor and six council members.

It is home to many prestigious mansions and beautiful modern day homes, Flat Rock Playhouse, the Carl Sandburg Home and rich in history.

Flat Rock and Henderson County has a lot to offer our tourists or new residents.

Per the 2004 census Henderson County's population was 96,124 and I suspect we have added more folks since than. The area is generally known as a destination location for many relocating families/retirees.

The five incorporated areas of Henderson County are the city of Hendersonville, the Village of Flat Rock, the Town of Fletcher, the Town Laurel Park and the Town of Mills River.

The county sits 2,200 feet above sea level and is surrounded by the Great Smokies and the Blue Ridge Mountains. You will find 4 distinct, generally mild seasons (of course there are always exceptions.) Summertime not only finds many tourists but a plethoria of summer residents fleeing the Florida summer heat and enjoying the mountains and all they have to offer -- beauty and lots of outdoor recreation for all ages.
