washington real estate school: Restaurant Review: Nibbana - 08/13/15 01:19 AM
For today’s restaurant review, we decided it was time to pay a visit to one of our very favorite Thai restaurants, Nibbana. Located in downtown Bellevue, Nibbana is a bit further out for real estate students attending our live lecture real estate class, and it tends to be overlooked as a lunch option. But when we do go, invariably the first bite of food is followed by “Why don’t we come here more often??”
Nibbana’s menu is fairly large, with plenty of options for both Thai food newbies (such as the green curry or pad thai) as well as more adventurous eaters (try … (0 comments)

washington real estate school: Restaurant Review: Dough Zone - 04/09/15 02:30 AM
It’s been a while since our last restaurant review, but that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped eating out! Some new restaurants have popped up in our neighborhood and we plan to try them all. Today’s review for our Bellevue real estate students is for Dough Zone, a Chinese dumpling house that opened up the street a few months ago. True to its name, Dough Zone specializes in dough-based dumplings, buns, and noodles, ranging from the familiar—boiled won tons and pan-fried pot stickers—to the exotic—lamb sauce noodle soup and pork feet noodle soup.
On our first visit, we were particularly excited to try the … (0 comments)

washington real estate school: Test-taking Tip: Visualizing Exam Success - 04/10/14 02:52 AM
Feeling overwhelmed and anxious about the exam? Maybe it's time to take a break from studying and use your imagination. But we're not talking about simple daydreaming—instead, we're suggesting a technique known as visualization.  "Visualization" refers to creating a mental image of an object or a scene in your head. Many experts believe visualization to be effective both in combating anxiety and in influencing outcomes. Here's a brief description of two ways you can try visualization.
Find your "happy place." This method involves visualizing a place or scene, either real or imagined, that you find relaxing and safe. Close your eyes and … (0 comments)

washington real estate school: Restaurant Review: Byblos Deli - 04/08/14 12:51 AM
Spring weather has finally arrived in Bellevue! We were happy to walk a few blocks to enjoy a quick outdoor lunch today at Byblos Deli. Byblos is a small grocery store with a few rows of Mediterranean groceries and a deli counter serving up a variety of tasty sandwiches, spreads, and salads. Our favorite items include the lamb and beef gyro wrap, the falafel wrap, and the veggie platter (falafel, hummus, baba ghannouj, tabbouli, and a warm pita), but we’re also looking forward to trying some less familiar items, such as the lahmajune (Middle Eastern flatbread topped with minced meat and … (0 comments)

washington real estate school: Restaurant Review: Qdoba - 03/13/14 02:08 AM
Today’s restaurant review for our Bellevue real estate students is Qdoba Mexican Grill, a “fast casual” restaurant that serves made-to-order burritos, tacos, quesadillas, salads, and nachos. A fair number of us here at Rockwell are vegetarians, and Qdoba offers a nice selection of vegetarian (and even vegan) options, as well as plenty of beef, chicken, and pork choices to satisfy the meat-eaters.
At Qdoba, the food is prepared to order, right in front of you. Once you’ve chosen your entrée, the questions start flying: Would you like pulled pork or shredded beef? Brown rice or cilantro-lime? Black beans or pinto beans? … (0 comments)

washington real estate school: Restaurant Review: Mr. Gyros food truck - 01/20/14 05:59 AM
Here at Rockwell, we take lunchtime very seriously. We also love Mediterranean food and we love food trucks. Imagine our joy when we learned that a food truck from one of our favorite Seattle restaurants, Mr. Gyros, has started popping up regularly on the Microsoft campus, just a few miles from our real estate school in Bellevue. We’ve been big fans of Mr. Gyros (both at their original location in Greenwood as well as the Ballard location that opened a few years back), but now we can get our Mr. Gyros fix here on the Eastside as well.
The food truck … (0 comments)

washington real estate school: Unlocking Real Estate Terms: "Fee" - 07/29/13 11:23 PM
Let’s explore another common real estate term, the "fee." We generally use "fee" to describe a fine, such a late fee for missing a bill payment. But real estate agents know that it also refers to an estate in land; it’s used in our courses in phrases such as "fee simple" and "defeasible fee." Where does this usage of "fee" come from?
Well, one of Merriam-Webster’s definitions of "fee" is: an estate in land held in feudal law from a lord on condition of homage and service. "Feudal law" refers to a set of legal customs in Medieval Europe, in … (0 comments)

washington real estate school: Unlocking Real Estate Terms: "Severalty" - 07/10/13 12:40 AM
In this new blog series, we’ll be discussing the meaning and origin of some common (and some not-so-common) real estate terms. The language of real estate transactions is filled with words used nowhere else—words that often sound archaic, foreign, and legalistic. So why do we use them and where do they come from? Let’s find out!
One of the first terms a student comes across in our real estate courses is "ownership in severalty," which refers to ownership shared with no one else: a single individual (or business entity) owns the property. This contrasts, of course, with joint tenancy, tenancy in … (0 comments)

washington real estate school: Restaurant Review: Let’s Do Lunch - 07/09/13 11:53 PM
Welcome back to our restaurant review series for our Bellevue real estate students! Today we visited Let’s Do Lunch, located just a few short blocks from our office complex. This unassuming but pleasant café offers a nice variety of tasty, made-to-order hot or cold sandwiches, entrée salads, and homemade soups and desserts. Our favorite sandwiches include the chicken & pesto on ciabatta, roast beef & horseradish cheddar on toasted sourdough, and the grilled ham & provolone panini. Seafood lovers can choose between either mahi mahi or crabcakes on a potato roll, while vegetarians will love the balsamic herb-marinated portobello mushroom sandwich … (0 comments)

washington real estate school: Test-taking Tip: Go Ahead and Mix It Up! - 07/09/13 06:53 AM
Most of us learned in elementary school that making lists and then memorizing them is a top study technique. However, here’s a new twist on list-making: the serial positioning effect. This refers to the way the brain retains information depending on the order in which it’s presented.
There are two parts of the serial positioning effect:
First, according to the primacy effect, you’ll recall the first few items in a memorized list more accurately than the others. This is simply because you give the first few items in any list more attention and rehearse them more often. Next is the recency … (2 comments)

If you’re a real estate professional, the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. has a daily impact on your career. We all know that in his life, Martin Luther King, Jr.was an activist and a leader of the American civil rights movement. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped lead the 1963 March on Washington. During the March on Washington, King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech,in which he called for a color blind America, where citizens are treated equally regardless of the color of their skin.

washington real estate school: Happy New Year! Let's all make it a good one! - 12/28/12 12:02 AM
It's almost 2013--have you made your New Year's resolutions yet? Maybe you've resolved to make your business more successful or to spend more time with your family. Or maybe you're going to do one small new thing every day, or one big new thing every month. Cook more? Be more healthy?
I admire people who make New Year's Resolutions, but I've also wondered why January 1 inspires this goal-setting.
Turns out, making resolutions at the beginning of the year goes back thousands of years to the Babylonians. Their new year began in March, but it was a time to return borrowed plowing … (1 comments)

washington real estate school: Book Review: The Honest Real Estate Agent - 11/29/12 03:52 AM
What does it mean to be an honest real estate agent? Mario Jannatpour’s book, The Honest Real Estate Agent: A Training Guide for a Successful First Year and Beyond as a Real Estate Agent, seeks to answer that question. This easy-to-read book is aimed at brand new agents or those considering a new real estate career. There are quite a few nuggets of wisdom for experienced agents as well, however, and it’s certainly worth a read even if you’ve been in the business for a few years. It’s also a good place to start if you are an experienced older agent … (1 comments)

washington real estate school: Restaurant Review: Persepolis - 08/14/12 01:48 AM
Today we’re reviewing a spot that is especially convenient for our Bellevue real estate students: Persepolis Specialties and Café, located right here in our office complex. Persepolis consists of a small specialty grocery store featuring Persian and Mediterranean items, and a café serving a rather eclectic mix of Persian, Thai, and American dishes. We tried the gyro sandwich (seasoned grilled meat, onion, lettuce, and tomatoes, wrapped in flatbread with cucumber-yogurt sauce) and the Persian kubideh sandwich (marinated ground beef kabobs with onions, lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes on a foot-long French roll). Both were tasty—and huge!
Other intriguing-sounding menu items included … (0 comments)
