north georgia: Gibbs Gardens in Jasper, Georgia - 11/18/12 06:45 AM
People are coming from all over the country to see a new attraction in Pickens County called Gibbs Gardens. We are fortunate to live in a naturally beautiful area in the Blueridge Mountain foothills, but the addition of Gibbs to our area is a bonus!

The 292 acre gardens opened for business in March of 2012. Their season runs from March 1 through December 15, at which time they close for the winter. As the brain child of Jim Gibbs, who originally started assembly of the gardens in 1980. Since that time he has designed 24 ponds, 32 bridge crossings … (0 comments)

north georgia: Obama May Prohibit Home-Loan Foreclosures Without HAMP Review - 02/27/10 09:11 AM
Check out the latest efforts by the White House to fix the foreclosure debacle. So far, everything they've tried has been a dog and pony show with little substantial progress toward actually solving the problem. Critics of the plan say it hurts both the homeowner and the timely correction of the problem.

north georgia: Walking Away from the Crash - 07/15/09 07:08 AM
There was an article in Sunday's paper about the state of the current economy. It quoted Ken Heaghney, a state economist, Dennis Lockhart, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and Roger Tutterow, Professor of Economics at Mercer. All three concur that the recession is not over. However, all three generally agree that the housing market is stabilizing. Since history has proven that real estate is a major factor in any economic recovery that is certainly welcome news.
There is still the spectre of looming foreclosures with which we must deal, and that has had and will certainly continue to … (0 comments)

north georgia: Local Stimulus In Governor’s Hands - 04/07/09 10:20 AM
Another year has gone by for the Georgia State Legislature. It absolutely amazes me how much time they can spend accomplishing so little. First, they passed a seat belt law several years ago that excluded wearing them in pickups, making us the only state in the union with such a ridiculous law. Then they had to waste the limited time they had this year to correct what was obviously wrong with their previous work. But don't get me started. I believe that we are represented as well as could be expected by Tom Graves and Chip Pearson, and that's all we … (0 comments)

north georgia: Are You Serious About Selling? - 09/19/08 03:51 PM

The real estate market is in the dumpster, but you want to sell your home.
There are three ways I'm aware of to sell real estate. You can market the property with a full service real estate broker. You can choose one of the "discount brokers" that offer limited assistance for a smaller fee. They mostly provide a sign, a limited internet presence, and some marketing material, but the seller is responsible for all showing and negotiation, which is where full service agents provide a … (1 comments)

In trying to make sense of the news I read lately, I turned to one of my heroes, that great philosopher, Yogi Berra. For those who don't remember, Yogi was an all-star catcher for the Yankees before making AFLAC commercials.
First on Yogi's real estate tips is "you can observe a lot just by watching". Now, how can you argue with that? There is no shortage of writers willing to give us information about the mortgage crisis, foreclosure statistics, economic indicators, bank failures, home sales, … (2 comments)

north georgia: Seller or Buyer: The Clock Is Ticking - 07/11/08 08:43 AM
By Ron Barnes
President - Pickens County Board of Realtors
My last article encouraged buyers and sellers to be aggressive in the real estate marketing process. The message was "lower the price of your home, make a corresponding lower offer when you find the home you like, and save money on interest". My example showed how to offset the loss, and save $19,916 over the next ten years in rising interest rates. Most people resist the concept of reducing the sale price to make more money (truthfully, I have a problem with it too).
At that point, interest rates were around … (2 comments)
