Thanksgiving - tips for oven cleaning

Saw an ad on TV recently re cleaning the oven BEFORE cooking the turkey; supposedly, the turkey will cook and brown better and more evenly in a clean oven.

Check out this pin on Pinterest: Thanks to original pinner who said: I think I'll try this next time. The appliance repairman told me using the self-cleaning feature takes years off the life of an oven.

The best oven cleaner! Cover the bottom of the oven with baking soda; then pour vinegar so it's all wet. Let sit about 20 minutes or so, then wipe all of it out with damp cloth or sponge. I leave my oven door open too. After drying you may see some white residue, wipe again.

And, something that has saved me from lots of cleaning -- if you have an ELECTRIC oven, you can place a sheet of aluminum foil on the floor of the oven, under the rack; it will catch drippings. When it's dirty, just remove the foil and replace it. This will save you dozens of oven cleanings.

Pumpkin Cranberry Bread

To me, this is a wonderful tme of the year; traditions - new and old - favorite recipes and (sometimes more fun) new recipes. Came across this one on the web when looking for a cranberry bread recipe. Made a few modifications - quick, easy, and think you'll like it!

Pumpkin Cranberry Bread

1 c canned solid pack pumpkin (1 large can was enough for 2 breads and pumpkin pudding)
1 c sugar
1/4 c water
2 large eggs
1/4 c vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla
2 c flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp ground cloves
1 c fresh or frozen cranberries (1 pkg of the fresh was enough for 2 loaves) - see note

Preheat oven to 350*; butter loaf pan.

Beat together pumpkin, sugar, water, eggs, oil, and vanilla. Sift in all dry ingredients; stir til batter is smooth (if you use an electric beater, this process takes very little time). Stir in cranberries; spoon better into loaf pan, spreading evenly. Bake, middle of oven, 1 hr and 15 minutes (or til tester comes out clean). Cool in pan, on rack 10 minutes. Take out of pan and cool completely. Can be made ahead and frozen or 4 days ahead and chilled, covered.

NOTE - if you take the cranberries and mix them with some of the flour you will be using, when you add them to the batter, they will end up not on the top or the bottom, but distributed throughout the bread.

First, a few facts:

About 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year
The most common type of heart disease is coronary, which kills more than 385,000 people annually
The leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States is heart disease
Every year, about 950,000 Americans have heart attacks; of these, 620,000 are a first heart attack; the rest happen to people who have already had a heart attack.

Major signs of a heart attack:

Chest pain or discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center or left side of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.
Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
Shortness of breath. Often comes along with chest discomfort. But it also can occur before chest discomfort.
Other symptoms. May include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or light-headedness.

If you think that you or someone you know is having a heart attack, you should call 911 immediately.

Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Founder of Labor Day

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."

But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Labor Day Legislation

Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From them developed the movement to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

A Nationwide Holiday

The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and television.

The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.

BEWARE...FOREWARNED -- FOREARMED

BEWARE…BEWARE…BEWARE. We just put a listing for sale into MLS; did not put it onto Craig’s List; and all of a sudden, it’s on Craig’s List as a rental with the owner’s name (he knew nothing about it). We received several calls about the rental – some people were smart enough to do further checking. They phoned us; asked about the rental; told us the person running the ad said he was the owner. He was a reverend, presently in Europe, working with the American Red Cross. When asked how to we see the property, just drive by; and if you like it, send me the money and it’s yours. We, of course, along with some of the people who called in, reported it as spam; haven’t heard anything from Craig’s List as yet. Thought I’d send this out… forewarned is forearmed.

The Arizonan Sonoran Desert in Bloom most people think of the desert as dry, brown, with no water

…not exactly true…we do have a spring. And right now, we’re in the midst (hopefully, not the end) of the season. Check out these flowering cacti...a beautiful spring sight!

As you can see, for all the naysayers out there, the desert is a beautiful place not just to visit but to live. What these pictures do not convey is the abundance of smells of orange blossom, juniper, and jasmine - so much so the allergy sufferers tend to have a hard time at this time of year, but the beauty of the desert is the reason why so many people move to our beautiful Arizona Sonoran Desert.

A New Tradition

Christmas 2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high
gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods --
merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This
year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine
concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift
giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes
there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in
a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?
Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates
from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some
health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned
detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a
book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down
the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift
receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or
driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift
certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about
a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this
isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town
Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or
motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a
local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is
struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin
their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery
and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave
your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at
your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese
lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about
fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to
burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that
China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about
US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow
their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our
communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.
THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

A wish for Santa

I don't want much for Christmas, I just want the person reading this to be happy. Friends are the fruit cake of life --- some nutty, some soaked in alcohol, some sweet, but mix them together and they're my friends At Christmas you always hear people talking about what they want & bought. This is what I want: I want people who are sick with no cure to be able to be cured. I want children with no families to be adopted. I want people to never have to worry about food, shelter & heat. Appraisers

Had an interesting weekend; finally got an appraisal (on Saturday) for a home which was supposed to close on Monday. Of course, the lender ordered the appraisal. Problem...the appraisal report we received was for the wrong house....correct address - but wrong house. The lender contacted the appraisal company and told them of the error; we contacted the appraisal company and told them of the error. Everyone got in "HOT WATER" for contacting the appraisal company. It's a big NO NO! The buyer's bank was getting ready to say the loan amount was too high because of the low appraisal. (End of story, we eventually got everything straightened out - AFTER the short sale bank had been contacted about the "new" appraisal. Seems as though the "secretary" sent the wrong report.)

Question is....who does the appraisal company answer to? If the lender who hired them cannot contact them; and if the agent cannot contact them, where's their accountability? Because of the error, closing was postponed another week. Thought the buyer was going to lose the home as the short sale date was not going to be extended. When there's a problem such as this (and I'm sure it happens more than we know of), what's the "correct" course of action? Any ideas????

Just read a blog on ethics and thought I would ask Rainmakers about this; a link on an agent's website on every listing that is represented by another agent.

...Seller's agents represent the Seller's interests and not necessarily the Buyer's. .... can represent the Buyer's interests in the transaction. .... no other agency in the area has our capabilities to dig into the background of a property such as its seller's motivations, last purchase price, time it has been on the market, possible mortgage problems, intangible factors (such as a pending divorce, a recent judgment, divestiture of assets, business problems, even the seller's own agent's financial motivations).
