The Little Orange Guy - 01/26/11 12:08 AM
This little orange guy comes to my backyard every morning and looks in the back door, waiting to be fed.
He's healthy and seems to be well-cared for (except that he is not neutered), and very, very friendly. I usually put out a little bit of food for him, but I have noticed that what he really wants is something to drink. I will mix a little dry food in with some water, and he will drink all of the water and leave the food. Our big orange cat, Leo, doesn't like it when the little orange guy comes to (16 comments)
Did you pay too much for your home? - 01/24/11 10:10 PM
Lately I have had several homeowners contact me about selling their homes. Some were in a situation where they paid too much for their homes just a few years ago, and will likely lose money when they sell. There are several situations when a homebuyer may have paid too much, but here is what I run into most often: You bought it without the assistance of a Realtor. If you bought your house from a friend or relative who had the house priced at what he thought was a good price, you may have paid too much. A Realtor can help (5 comments)
Snakes Alive! - 01/24/11 11:53 AM
I was showing a house not long ago that was the perfect house for my clients. As they walked around from room to room, they were obviously impressed, saying things like, "This is great! It's just what we've been looking for!" They went upstairs to see the very large gameroom and gave me all of the right buying signs. I was sure we had found the right house for them. The house was large, with five bedrooms upstairs. When we finally got to the last bedroom, the door was partially closed. My client pushed it open and took a couple of (7 comments)
Why I am a Blood Donor... - 01/23/11 12:47 AM
Are you a blood donor? If not, you should consider it! I used to be afraid to give blood. Now I donate every chance I get. I hate needles and every time I donate blood, the nurse has to stick my arm multiple times because my veins are small and slippery. It's not fun. But I still do it. Here's why. About 20 years ago, my daughter had to have open heart surgery to correct a birth defect in her heart. The doctors at Texas Children's Hospital told us she probably wouldn't need any blood, but that to be on the (9 comments)

Check Out the Neighborhood Schools Before You Buy a Home - 01/20/11 09:41 PM
When looking for a new home, one of the things most people take into consideration is the quality of the schools in the area. Even if you don't have children, there are a lot of reasons to find a home in a good school district. Homebuyers can find out a lot of information by looking at the school district website. Here are some things you might want to know about schools in the area you want to live in: The performance rating for the schools your children would be attending The average number of years of teaching experience of the faculty members Extra-curricular (4 comments)
Playing Keepsies! Memories of Simpler Times - 01/19/11 10:30 PM
Draw a circle in the dirt - about two-feet in diameter. You sit on one side and your opponent sits on the other side. Reach in your pocket and take out five of your aggies - the clear ones with thin slivers of color within. These are the ordinary marbles you are willing to lose. Your opponent does the same, but among his five marbles is an allie - it's a milky white one with blue streaks of color. That's the one you want. A second dip into your pocket produces your prize shooter....The fun begins - and we're playing keepsies! My (4 comments)

Leases Can Lead to Better Things - 01/17/11 01:29 AM
Lately I have had several clients looking for homes to rent. I don't mind working leases at all, because they are nice to fill in the gaps between closings. Besides, most renters will be buyers eventually, so it's good to have them in the pipeline. Rental properties in the Houston area are hot right now. It seems the good ones stay on the market for just a couple of days before there are multiple lease applications submitted. About a week ago, a former student of mine called, asking for help in finding a lease house. I told her I would be (7 comments)
Does Your Realtor Need a Vacation? - 01/16/11 12:25 AM
Realtors work when people need them...which is just about all the time. They show houses and go on listing appointments after hours and on weekends - whatever is convenient for their clients. They answer their cell phones 24/7 and check e-mails in the middle of the night when it's quiet and easier to concentrate. They send text messages to clients while they are dining in a restaurant or visiting with friends, and take their computers with them anytime they are away from home, even for a weekend. I even know a Realtor who worked on a deal during her daughter's destination (8 comments)

January is a Good Month to Clean Closets! - 01/10/11 12:26 AM
January is a good month to clean out closets, especially if you are planning to sell your home sometime soon! It's a fresh start to the New Year and there's no better time to get rid of old things you no longer need. I recently tackled the linen closet in my home and you won't believe what I got rid of! There were old medicine bottles (many years out of date) and old sample bottles of shampoo and lotion that were hard as a rock. Once I got rid of all of that stuff, I had lots of extra shelving space available. (6 comments)

Old Habits Die Hard - 01/07/11 12:50 PM
I was a teacher for 27 years before I became a Realtor. During that time I always wrote the objective for the day on the chalk board. I tried to keep it simple, but clear, so that the students would know what was expected of them for the hour that they spent in my classroom that day. As they say, old habits die hard. When I left my teaching career to start a new career in real estate, one of the first things I did was go to the office supply store to purchase a large dry-erase board. I hung it (5 comments)
