Camellias are Spring Favorites in Kentlands
Those of us that are fortunate to reside in the Kentlands community in Gaithersburg, Maryland are enjoying a variety of spring flowers.  New blooms are appearing each day.  Last week, the cherry blossoms were our primary interest but they have now faded and we walk on to find more of the colors of the season.
Camellias are blooming in many gardens in Kentlands and we love to see their brilliance on the sunny spring days.  Be sure to have your camera in hand to capture the special moments.

Dandelions in Kentlands - Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs
Many see dandelions as pesky weeds in their lawns and gardens.  We grumble, dig them up and toss them in the trash.  At this time of the year, we seem to have a surplus of dandelions in Kentlands, in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
My suggestion for you is to take photographs of the dandelions before you destroy them.  We might as well enjoy the beauty that nature has provided for most of our lawns.  Take a closer look at you own dandelions.  You might want to hang one of the photographs in your home.

Pros and cons of putting a property in a LLC - Investor Alert
One of the most common questions from real estate investors is about the use of a limited liability company (LLC) to hold the title of real estate investments.
Today's issue of The Washington Post, in the Real Estate Matters column by Ilyce Glink and Samuel J. Tamkin offers a very good response to this question.
"The purpose of a limited liability company (LLC) is to protect the assets of the owners of the real estate from potential liabilities arising from that property. That is the main benefit of an … (22 comments)

Suburban Maryland Spring Home Show - 03/11/12 04:02 AM
Suburban Maryland Spring Home Show
We have a beautiful sunny day in Maryland.  Dolores and I went out for a nice lunch in Germantown and drove over to tour the Suburban Maryland Spring Home Show at the Discovery Sports Center at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
Admission is free and there is plenty of free parking if you have the opportunity to attend the show.  There is much competition for home show crowds this weekend.  Yesterday, we went to the very large Maryland Home & Garden show at the State Fairgrounds and there is a major home show in nearby Washington, DC.

Happier Hours in Kentlands at Bonefish Grill

One of the benefits of living in the Kentlands community is the convenience of many restaurants within walking distance.  Happy Hour events provide a good time to meet with friends and neighbors.

Bonefish Grill has been one of the preferred places to meet for Happy Hour on Wednesdays because of their $5.00 specials that included their signature Bang Bang Shrimp along with half price drinks.

On Thursday, Dolores and I attended the initial Happier Hours event at Bonefish Grill.  The new Happier Hours is now available every day from 4 - … (21 comments)

Time to Spring Forward – Daylight Savings Time This Sunday! - 03/10/12 08:02 AM
"The transition into Daylight Savings Time puts us out of sync with our circadian rhythm and this can pose some unique dangers on our roads."
ActiveRain real estate professional Karen Hawkins provides the usual reminder to change out clocks for Daylight Savings time. I did not know that our driving skills may also be impacted.
"The biggest impacts can be felt on some of the key skills that affect the quality of our driving – poorer concentration, alertness behind the wheel and reaction time to potential hazards."
Take extra care and be a safe driver after the switch to Daylight Savings … (7 comments)

Helping your children buy their first home By Harvey S. Jacobs, Esq.  From the Washington Post  Although buying a first home may no longer be everyone's American Dream, I do hear from many parents asking how they may be able to help their adult children buy their first home. One such inquiry was the following:

My wife and I are the proud parents of our only daughter. She and her husband are house hunting in Washington and found a perfect starter home. The seller is asking $400,000. The problem is that our kids, with their combined income, can only qualify for … (10 comments)

Flowers are blooming in Kentlands - Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs
Spring does not officially begin until March 20, but the mild winter has made us even more anxious to see spring flowers.  I take regular walks through Kentlands for the benefits of the exercise and, with my camera in hand, also watch the changing colors of the seasons.
This week, walkers will see the first Daffodils of the season, many Poppies that have made it through the winter.  In a few places, Crocuses are blooming.  We've had a number of showers, so the blooms are covered with raindrops on some days.  … (28 comments)

Conventional Mortgage Alternatives For Low Down Payments In Maryland - 03/05/12 04:49 PM
Conventional Mortgage Alternatives For Low Down Payments In Maryland
HUD has announced increases in the cost of mortgage insurance for FHA financing.  Many real estate professionals are seeking alternative financing that will meet the needs of clients that have less than the usual 10% or 20% down payment requirements that are common with conventional financing.  A further challenge is to know how to avoid the extra costs of mortgage insurance when using conventional financing.
One of the regional lenders in Maryland, First Place Bank, is offering their 80-10-10 and the 5% down payment no mortgage insurance options.

Gaithersburg Citizen Participation Encouraged in Public Safety Initiatives
Two-way communication between the Gaithersburg Police Department and the public is critical to the success of public safety initiatives in our community.  Citizens sometimes fail to call the police because they feel the information is not relevant, or seems trivial.  However, this type of information is important to help identify trends, and can sometimes lead to solving a crime.  Every set of eyes on the street is valuable.
The Gaithersburg Police Department encourages the public to call 9-1-1 in emergency situations, or to report non-emergency activities and information to 301-279-8000.

I like to take walks through Kentlands and Lakelands, in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  With my camera in hand, I watch for the changing colors of the season.  Taking a few photographs makes the walks more enjoyable.  Sometimes, great beauty may be found in the smallest things that we pass every day.
We do not have too many flowers blooming at this time of the year, but the Crocuses are beautiful and the first Daffodils are now blooming.  Spring is coming!
