Thanks to the Week magazine, for bringing our attention to an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal, and a tip-off to a great "calculator" to help you make an informed decision.
First off, this article from Jessica Silver-Greenburg gives a few examples of instances where homeowners have been able to substantially reduce their monthly housing expenses by refinancing a loan they took out when rates were higher. We gutted our basement a few years ago, and turned what used to be a cold, dark, rather unpleasant space into a lovely master suite with walk-in closet, a 2nd living room, and a home office. For the master bath, we had one "minor" concern, which was that there was absolutely no way to get natural light, as the entire room was sub-terranean, and the configuration wouldn't allow for us to dig a window well and put in a small window.
