Halloween can mean joy for your busy borrowers and be less scary too!

Another "hurry up and wait" month on tap for the end of October. September saw families readjusting to the school year as it always does and very little business being conducted. Although, with the dip in Mortgage Rates seen at the end of the month, applications for a new mortgage skyrocketed. Typically, these fluctuations in the mortgage application rate mean a squall of loan signing business for us at about six weeks after the application blip. Many lenders have gotten better with the 30 day turnaround while utilizing their "skeleton crews" [appropriate for October huh?] to produce the deals for signatures.

Hopefully, the phone will begin to ring sooner than Halloween night. Invariably, mortgage brokers and Loan Officers alike, ratchet up the pressure only with a "month-end" deadline looming. I know of no rule that requires deals be signed during the last three business days of the month. Yet, seemingly like clockwork, that is when our phones ring off the hook! Experienced Brokers seem to have deals closing at all times of the month. They also value the role of a Notary Signing Agent in guiding their borrowers through a process that can seem overwhelming and keeping their deal from going sideways at the table. Choosing an Experienced, Ethical and Professional Notary Signing Agent seems more important than ever.

"A Quick Note" is a Certified Loan Signing Agent doing business across six Southern California counties, based in Lake Forest, in the heart of Orange County. We are familiar with all types of paper, having completed over 6,000 Loan Signings since 2002. During the downward trend of the Southern California mortgage business over the last two years, we diversified our services to include: Service of Process, Messenger and Errand Services as well as Photo/Occupancy inspections. A huge believer in technology, we are GPS guided to all locations and have on-board wireless for [Am-Trust and other] E-Signings and prompt communication for next-stop instructions. Please visit and bookmark our website and be sure to follow us on Twitter!

NO! I'm still part of that 89%...not the 11% (California Unemployment)

Self-employment continues to be a "double-edged sword" as we in Southern California mortgage-related businesses continue to meander through the trials of a foul economy. While I've seen a fair amount of hardship all around me and experienced more of it than I'd like to admit personally, hanging in there and staying self-employed seems to have been the right move-at least for me.

Clearly, income has not returned to 2005 levels. Still, 2009 has shown great improvement over the prior two years. When the bottom fell out during the first quarter of 2007, I was bewildered and somewhat broken-hearted. Having finally [after 25+ years] found the career I loved and being successful at it and generating an income that I always felt we deserved, that sudden THUD of mortgage-related businesses closing all around us was almost overwhelming. It seems that those businesses are reopening now in their leaner, meaner versions. Finding those professionals who either regrouped or reinvented themselves has been no easy task and the search continues.

Relying upon my service-oriented background while struggling to stay positive and upbeat has helped us find our way forward. We continue to minimize overhead, offer new services and remain flexible. This mix of cost cutting and expanding offerings has allowed us to survive. I feel good about the future of my business because I remain in control. As I struggle to regain the level of income my business once had, I'm thankful that I didn't return to a "day-job" and actually reduced my overhead to a more manageable level. Chances are, had I joined another firm, I'd have been faced with with becoming part of that 11% of Californians without a job.

So, keep us in mind for your Southern California Loan (and other) Signings, Service of Process and Urgent Messenger delivery in Orange County, Occupancy/Photo Inspections and for Finding a Notary Signing Agent Nationwide.

"A Quick Note" Mobile Notary and Document Delivery Service www.aquicknote.net Please also add us to your cell phone contacts under "Notary" (949) 279-6874

The End-of-Month push is here...right where it used to be!

Another sign [for me] that the refinance business is geting back on track, is the unmistakeable hurry-up-and-wait for loan documents being produced by lenders at the end of the month. Both Escrow personnel and Notary Signing Agents receive documents late, after anticipating them all day and just in the nick of time. These time-sensitive refinance documents must be signed allowing for a three-day right-to-cancel and one additional day for funding and recording of the deal at the end of the month. On the last two or three business days approaching this final window, escrow officers and notaries alike are bombarded with "must-sign-today" requests from lenders and mortgage brokers all wanting their deal to be inked immediately if not sooner.

Funny, how I used to complain about this process and bemoan the last minute crunch. Today, I'm just so happy it is here that I've forgotten to be angry that brokers don't get hot behind their deals sometime earlier in the month. Today I vow never to gripe again at the end-of-month crunch and merely accept with grateful, open arms all the work I can possibly squeeze into these few days.

If I forget...please just smack me!

As goes California, so goes the nation?

With turmoil in the financial sector and mortgages in crisis, until recently, banks have been unwilling and perhaps even afraid to lend. However, since January of this year ['09] lenders have restarted the economic train to recovery by lending first to those borrowers most likely to repay. Customers having higher credit ratings and greater equity have led homeowners looking to capitalize on lower interest rates back into the refinance market here in Southern California. The expected "wave" of mortgage-holders whose option ARM's are set to adjust combined with government pressure to lend bailout capital will continue the move toward a resurgence of the mortgage industry. As for the long term outlook, there will continue to be periods and instances of difficulty as appraised values adjust and short term players take the hardest hits.

What does this mean for nationwide markets? Perhaps since California was the first to see the hit, it will also be the first to see a recovery. This conclusion is evidenced by an increasing number of lenders starting their machines from zero and once again beginning to lend here in the southland. As a Southern California small business owner who was in desperate need of a restart to my own mortgage related business, I can tell you I am grateful to see work happening and believe that better times are not far away.

Establishing and maintaining ethical standards in challenging times.

Seeing our world through the prism of a downward spiraling economy, and with major businesses poised to fail or be reorganized and/or downsized, the challenge to maintain standards and to practice ethical behavior is compounded. While our leaders debate the pros and cons of plans to rebuild and fortify our economy, average Americans react to job losses, higher tax burdens and they begin to hunker down to ride out the storm.

During times of challenge, it seems that others more desperate than ourselves are well poised to prey upon us and pull us toward bending both our own standards and in some cases the law. Certainly, the allure of easy money, the lack of oversight and the temptation of weak human beings facing difficult choices contribute to unethical behavior and standards. It is therefore important to remind yourself each day that such standards must be upheld, adhered to and modeled for others-as well as enforced upon those who might deviate.

When our parents impressed upon us to do right, they never couched their admonitions with phrases like "when it suits you" or "unless you can cheat a little". They believed in things like honor, personal responsibility and boys NEVER under any circumstances hitting girls (but I digress). They believed in such things because they had fought hard to create them in what they deeply believed was the greatest country on the face of the planet earth.

In my daily life as a Notary Signing Agent, I have seen how reminding yourself to do right and then going out and doing it has made all the difference. First, you inspire the confidence of others who will trust you and your services. That, leads to loyalty in your customer, then to client satisfaction and in turn, others recommending your products or services. To me, that sounds like intelligent growth. Such growth, along with a positive attitude and steady reinforcement will spread like wildfire-I've seen it happen!

My wish for you is the fortitude and the confidence to do what is right each time you are presented with a dilemma of conscience. Although we are faced with significant challenges, doing what is right and good is our best way forward.

"A Quick Note"

"A Quick Note" Mobile Notary and Document Delivery Service has survived the economic downturn that has been described as a mortgage melt-down. How did we do it? We downsized. My wife and partner took both a day-job and a part-time night/weekend job. We expanded our services. We returned to conducting messenger services, I became a Registered/Bonded Process Server and we learned to conduct photo/occupancy inspections. We also grew our Nationwide database of Notary Signing Agents and prepared to conduct signing services nationwide. Since January, 2009, the refinance market has returned and I am again conducting a significant amount of Loan Document Signings.

As is her way, my wife Sharon worked hard to help us stay afloat and to allow me to keep the business I love and the career for which I am best suited. Hers is a sacrifice that I will always remember, appreciate and credit for the saving of our business. Because of her hard work I am poised to capture [and recapture] significant work and both grow our fortune and allow me to love what I do every day.

Thank you Sharon! I love you and I thank God for the day that he brought us together! I know that 2009 is the year of recovery and I look forward to every moment we will share in making it just that.

See, I told ya so!! 2009 is gonna be the year of comeback!!

Well, January '09 turned out to be 142% v.s. prior year. I feel justified in my happiness to see '08 just go away!

Escrow offices, mostly quiet for '07 and '08 are buzzing with refinance business. Escrow officers and assistants are scrambling all day and working late to crank out docs. Thus my phone is ringing and email is lighting up!

Having spent more time than I'd wanted NOT conducting business but instead "chasing" business in '08, it is great to see lenders beginning to free up funds to qualified buyers. My sincere hope is that each and every one of you out there begin to see the same results and that my prediction about post-election recovery continues to be correct.

Here's to a wonderful '09 for all of us!!

"I HAVE A DREAM" for 2009

I didn't really do a retrospective post about 2008. Perhaps it is because I feel particularly blessed simply by having it behind me. Certainly there is optimism about 2009 that promises to heal the wounds of 2008 and for that matter, 2007. Those of us who lived through it GOT through it. We'd prefer to NOT be reminded of it, and we turn our hope and our all our attention to 2009. 2009 can be the year of recovery. If not yet the year of prosperity, it can be the year of stabilization...the year we learned we'd all be O.K.

Here are a few of my hopes and dreams for 2009:

1. I hope President Obama has every success that he ran his campaign upon and I wish him well in his effort to shoulder the burden he takes on (tomorrow, 01/20/2009). I hope he takes the responsibility of keeping Americans safe seriously and stands up to terrorism in all it's forms.

2. I hope lenders use T.A.R.P. funds to create the programs that are desperately needed by all the folks who lost their jobs and their ability to make mortgage payments and that the mortgage industry begins to see a ray of light where profit is second to affordability...at least, for awhile.

3. I hope I NEVER hear of another Notary Public involved in fraud for profit. Ours is a sacred trust, that of the people. I hope the states make becoming a Notary (and renewing your commission) more difficult NOT easier and that those who do not regard their oath as solemn are never sworn in.

4. I hope brokers act more responsibly as to the mortgages they put their clients into and receive commissions for. Telling borrowers the hard truth wouldn't be a bad idea either...not everyone can afford the American dream...it may be sad, but, it's true!

5. I hope the UAW realizes that the big 3 are more than just their next paycheck and makes concessions and takes a paycut that allows those employers to remain competitive. I hope the new vehicles that the big 3 make outsell their competition because they have offered a better product...a product that Americans want to buy...

6. I hope my home state (California) government, the Governor and the Legislature stop spending money they don't have. Without more federal funding, California cannot continue to open its arms to our neighbors to the south. For that matter, we need to better support federal laws that outlaw illegal immigration. Conversely, we need to support legal immigration so that new immigrants bring value and purpose to our lives as well as theirs as new Americans.

I wish all of you a prosperous 2009!

"A Quick Note"

Fishing with Honey

What was that thing my Mother told me? Oh yeah. "If you can't say something nice, it's better to say nothing at all". As a deeply passionate person with strong convictions, I am often coaxed out to comment upon or defend a belief or something I feel wronged by. The problem with doing that is that while it makes me feel better for having stood my ground, I am often seen out of context by readers of social media where I participate. I'm rather transparent (though I have complex opinions) and believe the world should take me as I am. What I need to remember is that the words in a blog or written in 140 characters on Twitter will not begin to clue others into who I am nor what I am really about.

My primary reason for participation is to drive my Notary Signing Business which has been awful as it too is tied to the mortgage industry. I try to direct all conversations back to who I am, what I'm about and what I do (Notary/Messenger/Signing Service Nationwide/Registered-Bonded Process Server/Occupancy Inspector/Drive-by Photo Inspections and even light freight delivery). I get passionate about politics and current events and topics like ethics and although it hurts, I've begun steering more away from those topics...I may relapse so no promises.

The really interesting thing, is that when I'm "fluffy" and happy and pretending well to love everyone (I really don't dislike many, but I confess there are a few) I seem to ATTRACT more of the folks who want to or will do business with my company. Like DUH right? My point is only that the few minutes of chit-chat about the weather or kids or grand-kids buys and endless supply of goodwill and I need to do a better job of reminding myself to do that. Sometimes I get too focused on the work and take on a serious demeanor that potential clients misinterpret. Spending that extra 10 minutes (5 at the beginning and 5 on the way out) of fluffy time will guarantee that business will grow.

I'm all about the good news, the positive energy and the promise of this new year 2009. While we all recover from the last couple of years, I ask that you support me in my fluffiness. For the record too: Mom, you were right... AGAIN!!

Back-to-work Monday 2009...LET's ROCK!!!

To my friends here within the Active Rain community:

Well, 2009 has arrived...and not a moment too soon! 2008 was a tough year for everyone associated with Housing, Real Estate, Mortgages and particularly "Loan Signing". We have made every effort to diversify (we now offer: Messenger Services in Orange County, we are Registered/Bonded Process Servers and we do Occupancy/Photo inspections) our business while continuing to maintain the highest of ethical standards within the Notary Signing work that we continue to do. Remember too that we also offer assistance in finding a Notary Signing Agent NATIONWIDE using our very own database of select individuals...if you have need of such services outside Southern California. We learned more about some newer "products" this year too: Reverse Mortgages, Loan Modifications and expanded our single (or few) document "mobile notary" signing business significantly to both Attorneys and the General Public. As we have requested in the past, please take a moment to share this information and the following contact information (place us in your cell phone contacts under "NOTARY" because everyone needs a notary sooner or later) with all of your friends, family and colleagues that might utilize our service(s). There is no greater compliment than your recommendation and we truly appreciate your business!

                                                                            "A Quick Note" P.O.
It NEVER rains in California...and other lies...

Heavy Dew. That's what my Dad called it. One thing is for certain: Californians are spoiled and do not know how to drive in the stuff. We figure that bunching up and following closely while at freeway speed should be the same on a rainy day as it is on any other sunny Southern California day. But months of oily build-up, coupled with all kinds of road debris makes for a slippery mess. One little slip, and the 405, the 55, the 5 and the 91 all come to a grinding halt...it's bumper car deluxe!

I was wondering what other white lies (the check is in the mail) you've been told your whole life?

Active Rain it's all your fault I'm a Twitteraholic!!

Hi everyone, my name is Shannon. I just returned from my Twitterers Anonymous meeting where I explained that it is all Active Rain's fault that I got hooked on Twitter. On three occasions recently, I've spent significant time and energy writing and polishing a blog for AR and due to technical difficulty lost my posts or found AR running so slow that I was ready to scream! So, I decided to branch out and check out this thing called Twitter where I was already a member but hardly understood.

After all, what could a site that allowed posts with only 140 characters each really do for me or my business? At first, I twitted back and forth and bantered with those I either knew through AR or my other notary networking sites on Ning. Then I did it a little more...reading then posting, adding followers and following others that seemed interesting. I had my twitter rating graded and had other twitter off-shoots tell me about people I should be following. I ran into a few twitterers who were spammers but they were easily blocked or unfollowed. Some news agencies in particular run 10 to 20 posts at a time which I disliked as I prefer to see and have a more varied input.

I mix it up with both blurbs about my business and the services I offer both locally and nationwide. I also comment upon newsworthy events of a political nature while trying to remain cool and calm with those who have opposing viewpoints. I enjoy injecting humor and finding humorous posts made by the many people I follow as well as browsing the "everyone" page which gives you a random sample of the zillion or so people tweeting around the globe at any given moment.

Active Rain is a much more substantial platform and so, I'll be back. But, Twitter has truly gotten under my skin...

Follow me at: http://twitter.com/aquicknote

Or, better yet, consider doing business with me for all your Loan Document Signings, Service of Process, Messenger/Courier and Occupancy/Photo Inspections by visiting my website at:

Jason Crouch You Inspire Me... Contest entry

In reading the contest rules, I could only come up with one song! This one, a "Laugh-in" staple from the late 60's has a couple youtube incarnations...

The first gets right to the heart of TURN THAT SONG OFF :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYnjASLYKdA

The second, has Rowan and Martin mugging along:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skU-jBFzXl0

I vividly remember these from my childhood! If I dont win, I PROMISE you will hear these again!!

Firefighters, Foreclosures, Modifications and Mindsets...can I help?

With Southern Californians once again wiping smoke-induced sleep from their eyes, modification specialists and attorneys working to avoid thousands of expected foreclosures from happening and a nation inundated with economic doom and gloom, it is a wonder to see acts of goodness occurring before your eyes. During continuous coverage of the Yorba Linda, CA fire last night, I witnessed one home from the moment it caught fire, to fully involved, to reduced to rubble. While I watched, two unnamed police officers from the city of Buena Park (at least their police car said that's where they were from) stood on the roof of the next-door neighbors home, keeping embers from igniting and taking it as well. They did this armed with nothing more than a garden hose as firefighters were occupied with other fires that had hopscotched from neighborhood to neighborhood. Had they not held the line, the fire would have gone house to house and decimated every single home on the street.

It seems to me that these cops (and would-be firefighters) achieved their mandate to "protect and serve" the property belonging to residents of a neighboring city. It made me stop and think that if only we all pitched in to help our neighbor, just how much we could achieve. The mortgage melt-down is not exactly a "natural disaster" and certainly there is enough blame to go around. Still, if only we could all suck-it up and give a little extra of ourselves, consumer confidence might return and move our businesses forward. As a longtime believer in "the power of positive thinking", I was reminded that we all must make our own luck sometimes.

To this end, I extend my hand of friendship to those personally impacted by the wildfires of 2008. From today through January 1st, 2009, I offer my Mobile Notary Services [free of charge] to any family (in Orange County) that has lost their home or has been displaced by fire or fire damage. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of assistance to you by notarizing your documents:

Over 50% of homeowners go into foreclosure without ever speaking to their lender.

An eye-opening statistic to be sure. Is this because lenders are/were understaffed when the wave of defaults hit? Or is it because they were inundated without a plan? It seems that even today (November/08) some lenders are dragging their feet and slow to act. Are they afraid of all the legislation happening at the federal and state levels? It seems that keeping buyers in their homes [somehow] is better than holding rows and rows of empty ones.

"A Quick Note" ( www.aquicknote.net ) is a Notary Signing Agent looking to conduct loan modifications in Southern California and nationwide using our own database of over 1600 NSA's. Follow me on Twitter at: http://twitter.com/aquicknote

"A Quick Note"
www.aquicknote.net
www.twitter.com/aquicknote

I've seen a buzzkill to positive posting...I may be corny, but I'm happier for it!

I was drawn to a post about the biggest lies on AR. The author wrote a funny and entertaining piece about lies told on AR. In reading the massive list of commentary-some of which was even more hilarious than the original post- I ran across this excerpt (one response):

[...I have an addition to the list.

"I am a fountain of positivity!"

This whopper is usually told by someone masquerading as the most upbeat and encouraging person on AR, when lo and behold they reveal themselves to be among the most judgemental and petty. "Live and let live ... as long as you live and act like I do."]

Although this responder hadn't targeted me personally, his one comment really made me stop and reevaluate my own participation here because I have tried to be a champion for Good News as of late. As for being judgemental and petty, I'd hope that that isn't me. But, we all make choices out here and we all discriminate each time we choose one thing over another.

So, I asked myself why I do this positive posting thingy, and here is what I came up with:

1. All the posts of DOOM and GLOOM have really begun to get me down and made me a more unhappy guy.

-by sharing and spreading only good news, I have sought to reverse that trend in others as well as myself.

2. I have personally (whether others choose to believe this or not) seen what "the power of positive thinking" has been able to affect in my own life. I believe that, at least, acting upbeat will help you to become upbeat and that "fake it until you make it" is a philosophy that will bring each of us through a particularly rough time.

-We each make the choice to take on the new day when we rise. Choosing to take it on in a friendlier, happier way is merely an extension of that. After all, if we had chosen to pull the covers over our head and do nothing, we would guarantee NOTHING good could or would happen in our life today.

3. I tend to take things personally...business or not. Writing about or saying positively reinforcing things helps me BE more positive. KEY POINT: Being happy can be a choice one makes verses simply a state of mind.

-I've always worn my heart on my sleeve. The people I work with, my family and friends and even acquaintences often comment that I am a particularly straight arrow and a bit of a goody-goody. Aside from the occasional bend of "the basic speed law" when behind the wheel, they are right about me. I have a job where fraud is a big deal. I've been DOJ background checked for two of my certifications and fingerprinted too. I tell the truth to people I work with and for and I make affiants raise their right hand and swear an oath (of truth) several times each week. You might say honesty is my business.

4. Knocking someone down is always easier than picking someone up, helping them find their feet and giving them a supportive comment as they restart their journey.

-as both a blessing and a curse, I have always chosen a more difficult path in my own life. Certainly for me, being self-employed in a mortgage market that has literally dwindled down to next-to-nothing (believe it or not) is better than grinding away at a dead-end job that I'd hate.

I belive that continuing to spread the good news that I find is better than telling everyone the sky is falling or telling those I meet that the end is at hand. I believe that tomorrow will be better than today, the sky is NOT falling and that the glass really is half-full. I believe we need to keep our chins up and our eyes on the prize.

Have I proven myself to be corny and old-fashioned in my thinking here? A bit of a square? Guilty as charged!! But, better than the alternative right?:

My kid, the B-52's and the Power of Positive Thinking...What Inspires you?

Today, I was making my normal morning trek, dropping my freshman daughter at school with one eye open and mussed hair...thank goodness for my "guy cap" and sunglasses. She quickly grabbed my MP3 player and searched through my wide variety of music landing on the B-52's "Love Shack". Well, if coffee doesn't work for ya, and this song doesn't perk you up, you just may already be dead! That upbeat and happy tune had me thumping the steering wheel with my thumb and took me back to the 80's when I first heard it as I sang along. It is as fresh and as energetic today as when I first heard it back then.

I truly enjoy our morning conversations and I usually end up ranting to her about something philosophical or that I feel passionate about [her grades or politics for example]. I realize more and more each day how our talks have impacted her. More than imprinting my own values and opinions [or musical choices] upon her, I have tried to encourage her to look at things from all sides and thus, find her own solutions. It's funny. I've sometimes found myself playing devil's advocate and challenging her with opinions that are in direct opposition to my own. For me, it is more important that she make wise and informed choices and demonstrates the qualities attributed to a "thinking" person.

Since her first experiences at Montessori school long ago I have challenged her to find a new perspective and see things that may at first glance go unnoticed. I remember that my ex [then my wife] had been driving her for a week or so before I took over and she immediately noticed the route I had taken. "Mommy doesn't go this way" she said to me in a worried and semi-scolding way. "Well" I told her, "I'm sure there are many, many ways that I go that Mommy doesn't". To prove my point, each day for the next month or so, I deliberately drove a different route each day thus expanding and challenging her perspective. Today, I see her weigh decisions carefully, and choose wisely.

Recognizing I am not unlike my child, I have tried to challenge the parameters of my own thinking about the current economic crisis our country faces. I have not been unaffected by the massive changes that the real estate/mortgage industry has handed all of us these last two years. I have improvised and adapted and now I persevere...and I'm now looking forward to the day when I will overcome. Life has a way of challenging each of us to find the best in ourselves and in others. I'm constantly surprised by the good I find and the kindness of acquaintances with whom I speak and correspond. My time spent on social networking continues to be rewarding.

I reached a conclusion that when one has tried all that they know, what remain are all the things that we must continue to strive to learn (BRILLIANT HUH?). I've looked "outside the box". Today, I'll begin my search for a whole new box. It seems when one is at the bottom of the barrel, one must find a NEW barrel...and so it goes!

Such processing of information [for me] typically boils back down to what I call the "Power of Positive Thinking". No, I haven't read that particular self-help book. But, I constantly find myself being more positive when I remind myself to be. I find myself more successful when I see success all around me and when I believe that I will be more successful. Human nature grinds us toward negativity each and every day, and so, it is a constant struggle to remain positive, to see the glass as half-full and to chase away the purveyors of doom and gloom. Each day, one must find the inspiration to see something good...or simply to find their way. Today, for me, it was my daughter, the B-52's and sharing my thoughts on positive thinking with the people who might read this post. You are invited to try mine tomorrow...but only if you share a small inspiration with me so that I might try yours tomorrow as well.

Keep your chins up out there!

"A Quick Note"

If you can't get out of it, .......you gotta get INTO IT!

Well, I know I'm facing alot!!

...Another birthday, another year older. An upcoming 30 year reunion...and all that THAT implies.

...A teenage daughter and her entry into high-school life...(boys be warned-I bought a shotgun the day she was born and thus, have had plenty of practice on how to USE IT!)

...The challenge of building my business in a rebounding economy...and defying the odds to stay self-employed at all costs!

                                                   !

Then again, I suppose I'm not really a stick-in-the-mud either. I did, some six years ago, leave a middle-management career of 25 years to strike out on my own and become self-employed. Not from an over-abundance of bravery, but rather my decision was made from a place of frustration. Upon reflection, I suppose my very long (25 year) fuse and comfort with the familiar did little or nothing to advance my career. Only when I finally chose to "get into it" for myself did I finally feel rewarded. While money is wonderful to have and is certainly a measure of ones success, the satisfaction of making your own business decisions is far more valuable to me.

So many things in life are challenging each of us. Not the least of which is change itself. I suppose I have usually avoided change. Opting instead for the familiar, the comfortable and peace of mind in doing everything I've always done and doing it the way I've always done it. We've all heard "if you can't beat 'em join 'em"...my new take: If you can't get out of it, you gotta get into it!

As a believer in "The Power of Positive Thinking" and knowing what can be created when I remain positive, I have struggled for new and different ways to remind myself that more good things will come my way. With so much emphasis placed upon the negative aspects of our economy and with so few sources of positive influence, I have been left to my own devices to motivate and inspire myself daily. In calling upon that frustration that served me so well in improving my career direction, I emplore each reader to dig deep and find the good. But, no matter where you find that good of which I write, it will only inspire others if you take the next step...the step of sharing it with others.

I truly believe that today will be a good day. I hope you believe it too and that you share your belief with all who would listen. Make it so.

"A Quick Note"

www.aquicknote.net

Believe that this trickle will become a stream...then a raging river of Good News

I have sparred with several "doomsayers" of late as to the state of our economy. While it would be simpler to join 'em rather than beat 'em, I've decided it is even more important to highlight the good news beginning to trickle out there. Nobody knows better than the AR membership about all the negativity being strewn about. Having a deep belief in the power of positive thinking, and believing that good news will in and of itself bolster consumer confidence, I ran across this article that contained good news and felt compelled to share it with all of you:

http://transparentre.com/2008/10/20/steady-trickle-of-good-news-to-prop-up-the-mood-of-the-economy.aspx

Remember folks: Keep your chin up! See the glass as half-full and never give in to the forces of doom and gloom...believe that things will improve and work to make it happen!

Best wishes!

This question still comes up now and then...What is an NSA?

A Notary Signing Agent is a Notary Public with specific training and familiarity with the signing of Mortgage Loan Documents. Specifically, I obtain documents from mortgage brokers or escrow officers, schedule appointments for their borrowers and go to their homes or offices to conduct their closing. While notaries refrain from offering advice, as we are not attorneys, we do facilitate a smoother closing at the signing table as we can quickly direct the borrower to the documents/areas where needed information can be found. Most borrowers walk away from the signing with a better understanding of their loan and calmer than had they been left alone to navigate the process.

I can also help you find an NSA nation wide using my own database of over 1600 Notary Signing Agents!

"A Quick Note"

Disclaimer...CAUTION-Good News Ahead...some "CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!"

Let me begin by telling you that I'm a NOTARY SIGNING AGENT. This is the profession that I love and am truly best suited to do. I belong to a number of Notary-related (and other) groups here on Active Rain. With all the bad news we see and hear each day, both on the blogs and in what we read and watch on the news, my latest beef has been that GOOD NEWS is few and far between. I wrote a blog commenting on the positive movement in the DOW on Monday to counter all the doom and gloom that followed the previous week of stock market volatility.

My post, http://activerain.com/blogsview/737705/DOW-Climbing-on-renewed was added for RE professionals and to each of several Notary Groups that I belong to. Notaries have seen their businesses suspended, altered their operating procedures drastically or folded up their operations in search of a "day job". My intent was to begin priming the pump with good news since had I chosen to do nothing, the doomies would again have won the day. I'm not so naive to believe that my "good news" post would turn the tide of our recent financial crisis. But, I intended my post to be seen as a ray of hope that a return to positive ground is in the making. After all, CONSUMER CONFIDENCE is one thing that is holding our economy down right now.

My post was promptly removed by the administrator of the group NOTARY SIGNING AGENTS by the group Founder/Administrator. I appealed to the group as a whole, briefly explaining my side of the situation with this post to the group: http://activerain.com/blogsview/738511/Specifically-related-unwilling-to This second post was also removed so I sent an Active Rain message direct to the administrator questioning his motives for removing a post that contained Good News. Here is his unbelievable response:

From: Leon Austin
To: Shannon Ziccardi
Sent: Tuesday, October 14, 2008 2:11:06 AM
Subject: Re: Why remove my posts? (Sent via Activerain)

There is no relationship between a one day swing in the stock market and Notary Signing Agents. Our economy is in a recession. And what happened yesterday is not going to bring us out of it.
Shannon, the stock market fluctuations are not an indicator of the state of the economy. The stock market is being moved by investors who buy on dips in stock prices, then sell when they are ready to take profits.
That has nothing to do with Notary Signing Agents.

Leon Austin, CNSA

Here is the message I sent back:

Dear Mr. Austin,

Your logic seems undeniably flawed. A one day swing in the DOW has been precisely the difference for many businesses and individuals, financial institutions and members of the public at large who make up our client base. Perhaps you have insulated yourself from the real world or are not personally invested in the stock market. I, however am a NOTARY PUBLIC and recognize that the financial conditions of our clients are exactly related to how notaries earn a living.

I'm removing my name from your group as you do not allow real Notary Signing Agents to express their true and honest opinions without censorship. Rest assured that while you hold the power to silence the Notaries associated with your group, you will see our writing and hear our voices raised up elsewhere.

Regards,

Shannon Ziccardi

Obviously, I'm a little ticked off at this point or I wouldn't have gone to such lengths to share this story. My question for each of you is this: What is the deal with those who only wish to hear the negative, the bad, the ugly news and reject any stories that bring hope or are designed to promote consumer confidence to return in our Real Estate/Mortgage related businesses? I for one believe that much of this consumer confidence problem our nation is experiencing can be overcome simply by saying it WILL be overcome and then choosing to work hard every day to fulfill that prophecy.

What do you think?

"A Quick Note"

www.aquicknote.net

"A Quick Note"
www.aquicknote.net
www.twitter.com/aquicknote

Notaries have opinions and live real lives too!

This is a group for topics related specifically to Notary Signing Agents. It's also a place where people can view topics about our profession, and learn more about [what] we do. It's a way to let people know that we are more than "just a notary".

Twice today my posts were removed from this group for no apparent reason. My first post, shared the good news of a soaring DOW. Certainly notaries here are not immune to the effects of the American Economy and the effects of a stock market upon their own 401k and might just be welcoming of a little good news after a rollercoaster ride that went straight down last week. My second post was direct to our group and expressing my surprise that an administrator had removed the first post. Another member commented her surprise at the removal of good news as had I.

So, can I ask those of you tired of all the bad news to comment on hearing a little good news? It seems that if I, a professional Notary Signing Agent cannot comment on good news that affects notaries, then what EXACTLY is the point of the group? I have re-read both posts and BOTH seem to fall under the group explanation (above).

Has anyone else experienced this type of undue censorship?

What is your opinion of such action?

"A Quick Note"

Specifically related...unwilling to hear good news?

Specifically related to my 6 year, continuing career as a Notary Signing Agent, I was disappointed to see my post relating to good news on the DOW didn't qualify for this groups topic list and was removed by an administrator.

ANY good news on the economy that would lead to an increase in business, bolster consumer confidence to drive our businesses and spread a positive message in a time when we could all use one reminds me not of an administrator. But, it reminds me instead of those in the media who wish to purvey doom and gloom and tell us the sky is falling.

Hope your Notary practices remain optimistic. For if not and you throw in the towel, the "doomies" will have won!

"A Quick Note"

DOW Climbing on renewed confidence? GOOD NEWS FOUND!!

As I write, the DOW has hit positive territory (+534.12)...it seems that the sky did not fall. After a difficult and record-setting decline last week, numerous announcements by the FED, the Treasury and the President of the United States, along with many world leaders and organizations, it seems the rebound has begun.

Last week, I looked high and low, far and wide. I asked those I know and many I do not. I searched wickipedia, Google and my own heart. Finally, I actually found good news here and on other forums where other middle-class Americans displayed their positive outlook and reminded me that we still live in a country of optimism. I was amazed to find that regardless of what people say in their business life Monday through Friday, they typically BELIEVE that a comeback is imminent on the weekends.

I awoke to the sound of the Santa Ana wind blowing leaves and pine needles against my window today. While the threat of fire, and with the looming memory of a horrific fire season of 2007 creates trepidation in Southern Californians, we are ready to get back to work. We see the opportunity our country offers as we always have...even through the smoke. We FIGHT fires and we will FIGHT for such opportunity.

Don't buy into the naysayers and the purveyors of doom and gloom. Choose to see the glass as being half-FULL. TELL PEOPLE that GOOD is what you see, hear and believe. It's funny how a little good news can create a ripple of good deeds. Just IMAGINE what a wave of good news could do! Best wishes to each of you for a productive and successful week. Choose to have a GOOD week...and you will!

"A Quick Note"

www.aquicknote.net

NOTE: This post was removed from the NOTARY SIGNING AGENT group posts. I suppose my message of positivity in a time when everyone is telling us that life as we know it is over is not the message that administrator wishes to advance.

For the record, I am a Notary Signing Agent and that is my primary line of work. Keep your chins up!!(DOW closed +936. for the day...I call that a good start!)

"A Quick Note"
www.aquicknote.net
www.twitter.com/aquicknote

Three Rules of Management (Perception v.s. Reality)

In a 25 year career as a middle-manager in the restaurant business, I gave this speech once to each of the hundred-or-so persons I personally hired each year. I told them:

Our Company has many policies and procedures that will make or break your career based upon how you act upon them during your time spent working here.

Beyond THOSE rules, I have only 3 rules that must be adhered to in order to avoid termination:

1. DON'T LIE TO ME

Regardless of any problem we are addressing on a daily basis within the operation, a lie creates an entirely "NEW" problem/issue that did not previously exist and creates new and unnecessary challenges and wastes valuable time until it is uncovered.

2. DON'T STEAL FROM ME (my business)

Such action is counter to all efforts exerted in the operation of our business and is in direct opposition to the reason you are being hired today.

and finally....

3. GOD HELP YOU IF YOU EMBARRASS ME OR OUR OPERATIONS!

Never allow what we do to be seen as a joke. Be prepared each day to both represent yourself and our business in a professional and competent manner. When supervisors ask you questions, give a complete and well informed answer or immediately and honestly admit you do not know-but, will find out. Never allow yourself or (more importantly) our business to be seen as unprofessional, uneducated or unprepared. Always be certain that your clients and your supervisors perceive you in a way that will be taken seriously...

Certainly, we have all made our own gaffs in our own business lives. Such missteps are human in nature and unavoidable to some extent. The idea was to remind candidates that we take our business seriously and insist that they do the same. I found that by laying out the "three rules" up front, I retained many more of the type of employees I desired.

"A Quick Note"

www.aquicknote.net

"A Quick Note"
www.aquicknote.net
www.twitter.com/aquicknote
