Attention Seattle! Do you know about the $7500 Tax Credit for First-Time Home Buyers?

If you are a first-time home buyer who has purchased or plans to purchase a home between the dates of April 8, 2008 to July 1, 2009, you are eligible for a tax credit of $7500. This is a wonderful opportunity. Essentially, the "tax credit" acts as an interest free loan that will have to be paid back to the government over a span of 15 years, which is $500 a year. But for those you who are on the edge of wanting to be a homeowner but are afraid to spend all of your savings on a down-payment, this tax credit can really help to make that a reality. Remember, this is not a tax deduction, it is a tax CREDIT, so if you owe $7500 in taxes for the year 2008, this credit would essentially wipe out that amount and you would pay no taxes for 2008. Another way to look at it is, if you owe no taxes for 2008, the government will give you $7500.

When I first heard about the tax credit, I didn't think it was such a big deal because you have to pay it back but who else will lend you money at zero percent interest and not expect you to pay it back for 15 years. This credit can really help those who need that extra money to comfortably get themselves into a home and pursue their dreams of becoming homeowners. You can put it in the bank for a rainy day and know you have several months of mortgage payments should the need arise. You can use it towards repairs and remodeling for the home you just bought.

****One other thing that you should know about is that you may never have to pay back the credit. Stay tuned as this would make a sweet deal even sweeter!!!

I came across a post on Craigslist today that read:

"Now Accepting Credit Card For Down Payment and First Month's Rent!"

Seriously? I was appalled when I read that and immediately had to email the person who posted it and give them my two cents. I know that sometimes I react first and then think later but I really feel like these people are doing a disservice to their clients. The reason I love my job is because at the end of the day, I know I helped someone to build their wealth and realize their dream of being a homeowner. If I knew that they had to charge their credit cards to do this, I would almost bet that they would probably sink pretty fast. If they have to charge the downpayment and first month's rent, where will they get the funds to take care of the the big and little fixes that come hand and hand with being a homeowner?

Please don't buy a home until you know you have the funds to cover all of the things that can happen. Leave those credit cards alone and use them when you REALLY need them. I hope this company gets their act together and helps us to clean up this industry rather than being a contributor to the mess.

The Market has slowed down. We are not as busy as we once were. What are you doing with your extra time? Hopefully, you are buckling down and starting to organize your systems into a well-oiled machine, so that when the market picks up, you will be roaring to go. This is also a great time to start thinking about having a niche?

Think about it...Yes, we sell real estate...but are you a Jack-of-all-Trades and a Master-of-None?

I believe that each of us has something unique to offer to the real estate community. We have different personalities, specialties, abilities, attitudes, skills, drive, motivations, etc. We are not all moved by the same things. Thank goodness! So what moves you?

If you are having a hard time finding your real estate niche, I have compiled a list to help you out. Most often, you will find that the niche you are drawn to is a reflection of a previous passion and can give strong insight into who you are. Read through the list. Do any of them resonate within you?

Niche Markets for Real Estate Agents

Commercial Real Estate-You enjoy selling office buildings, hotels, apartments, retail, hospitality, shopping centers, and industrial properties. You probably like punching on the calculator to see if the numbers work out.

FSBO's-You target the For Sale by Owners. You know that 80-90% will give up and turn to a Realtor so you want to be there to prove your skills and the worth of working with an agent.

BPO's -You know that Broker Price Opinions can bring in a good side income in addition to your commissions and you are hoping that a few turn into REO listings. You don't mind doing paperwork.

REO's-You don't mind working with banks to help them sell their inventory. You understand the challenges of getting real estate owned properties ready to market, the upfront costs involved and the hard work that goes into it.

Expired Listings-I have heard these specialists labeled as bottom feeders but why not think of them as agents who like to help. They can see that the property has not been marketed to its best potential. They know those photos of the bed are not going to sell the home. They step in when they see a problem and fix it.

Foreclosures-You keep your investors in the know about homes going to the Trustee Sales, hoping they will come to you in the future when they are ready to sell. You like finding good deals and helping your clients make money.

Short Sales-You have the skill of working with the banks and getting them to take less than what is owed, the extra shuffling of paperwork and the extra time that goes into these deals. You don't give up and have tenacity. You are good at getting things done even when it seems no one else cares.

Personally Investing in RE-You see value in owning and investing in your own properties.

Developers/Investors/Flippers-You have your finger on the pulse of what is hot and what is not. You like helping others and in this case, you like helping them to make money. You are always on the hunt for that special property$$ or land.

Multi-Family Homes-You love when you can show that the rent role plays out with the investor ahead each month. You have a knack for selling apartment buildings, duplexes, triplexes and such. You understand numbers and zoning.

Condo Specialist-You know how to guide the client through the Home Owners Association's By-laws, covenants, and such. You might know all the new high-rise developments coming to your city before they start building. You may specialize in Penthouse suites.

Relocation-You love to welcome the newbies by telling them all about your great city, showing them around town and introducing them to like-minded individuals.

Green Real Estate-You have an interest in living green and like to share it with the world. You understand our resources are depleting and you encourage and educate others on how to live a more sustainable lifestyle. (This is my niche in case you hadn't gotten that from my previous posts. I thought I would state the obvious)

First Time Home Buyers-You are a teacher at heart. You enjoy taking the lead and showing the way, giving sound advice, and educating your buyer's along the seemingly daunting home-buying process. (This is another niche of mine)

Vacation Home Specialist-You love to find that second home for clients, whether or not it is up in the mountains by a great skiing area, on the golf course, or along the beach.

Retirement Home Specialist-You understand that we all age and like to help those who are ready to downgrade their current living situation or help them to find a great retirement community. You are probably a very caring person.

Vacant Land Specialist- You probably have a good understanding of zoning laws, perc tests, boundaries, etc. and work well with developers.

Rural Home Specialist- Wells and septic systems are your forte. You understand there is more to the process than I turn the water on and water comes out. I flush and the waste is gone. Often times, buyers have never lived in a home with these systems and need help understanding them. May have experience with floodlands.

Luxury Home Specialist-You probably have a refined taste and know how to cater to the wealthy. You probably have connections and/or know how to connect with the elite.

Vintage Home Specialist-You know and love turn-of-the century homes and know how to glorify their attributes. You probably feel that each home has a story to tell if only the walls could talk.

Leasing/Property Management-You are good at managing things and know how to interview for the best potential tenants. You have your finger on the rental market's pulse and have an interest in managing your client's assets (even better if they are your own properties).

Waterfront Properties-You love water and understand beach rights and frontage, wetlands, storm water drainage plans, sewer disposal, and other issues that come up with waterfront property.

Foreign Language/Diversity Specialist-You have the ability to connect with others in a way that I may not. You may speak Spanish or Korean or maybe you connect with the gay and lesbian community. Buyers and sellers may be attracted to you because you share a special bond, language, etc.

Single Woman Buyers-There are more and more successful, single woman who want to be homebuyers and those who can appeal to this demographic can really be successful. These women don't want to have to wait for a husband or partner to come along. They want to fulfill their dreams of being a homeowner and you want to help them reach this goal.

Neighborhood Schools Specialist-You know the best private and public schools in all of the neighborhoods. You may even know the teachers and the principals. You pride yourself on helping families move to a neighborhood with schools that meet their needs. You may also be a parent yourself and you even might be on your favorite districts school board.

Equestrian Property-You understand that horse lovers need that special property. You have no problem putting on your boots and getting dirty to find them what they are looking for. You probably have a horse yourself.

Farmland Specialist-You understand the dynamics of a farm and you help connect farmers with the perfect land to produce their goods.

Real Estate Divorce Specialist- This is for real, I found this website online and got a kick out of it. They claim "In over 70% of divorce cases, the couple is either selling a house, or buying one, or BOTH! Wouldn't you like that business?" I can see how it would be beneficial to have the extra skill and knowledge of how to work with divorcing couples as this can really be a slippery slope.

Neighborhood Farm Agent-You have chosen a neighborhood that you want to be your Farm area. You may send out calendars, knock on doors for food drives, throw neighborhood parties, or be on your city's council. You know the area you want to do business in and you are working it.

Animal Lover Agent-You appeal to other dog lovers (cats, birds, etc) and market yourself this way. I see it all the time...people love to pose with their animals for their real estate photos...it obviously appeals to the client that shares their passion. Example: Jim Hubal

I know that this list is by no means complete. Did I leave your niche out? Leave a comment and tell me about your specialty. Did I already list it? Tell me why that niche appealed to you. Still don't have one and don't like any on this list. Well, then I suggest you dig in deep and ask yourself what makes you tick. What drives you? Then go out and make yourself a niche that relates to those expertise. Remember we all are unique and each have something to offer.

The Essential Baking Company in Seattle is one of my favorite places to patron. The company occupies a large brick building near Gasworks Park in the Wallingford area just North of Lake Union. This area is a great place to live as you have easy access to the Burke-Gilman trail, there are many shops & restaurants, it's near Fremont, has EZ access to downtown, as well as the University of Washington, yet is considered a quiet and coveted Seattle neighborhood.

Using organic ingredients, the Essential Baking Company, makes fresh artisan breads, European pastries, and luscious desserts, as well as serving sandwiches, soups, salads, coffee, teas and more.

There is always a buzz and lots of activity going on at the café. There is often a full house, making it sometimes difficult to find seating, especially on the weekends. But if you are looking for a piece of rustic bread, a hot soup of the day, and a latte, then this is the place.

These homes ranged in price from $299,950-$1,050,000, with a median price of $361,000. The homes sold had an average of 75 CDOM (cumulative days on the market) and sold for an average of 98.86% of their listing price. The average square footage of the green homes sold was 1510, selling for an average of $265.24 per square foot. 22 of the 25 sold green homes were certified Built Green (12 of these homes were also certified by Energy Star). One home was LEED and Energy Star certified.

Tips to GREEN your HALLOWEEN.

Ok, sometimes I might take it a bit overboard in my attempts to lure people to live more green. If you found offense in my post If it's Yellow, Let it Mellow. If it's Brown, Flush it Down, I hope this reading can convince you not to run away yet. Below you will find some manageable suggestions to lighten the environment's load of just a bit of our holiday-consuming-ways:

•· Buy a Recycled Costume-I mean really? Is it necessary to be the first one to wear it? Value Village has loads of used goods (although they are starting to sell more and more of those new costumes that come in the plastic bags...overlook those...there is a used section) or check out a Goodwill or your local thrift store.

•· Rent a Recycled Costume- Looking for something really unique and afraid you won't be able to find the necessary accessories at a thrift store? Check out for Champion Party Supply in Seattle for costumes that can be rented by the day.

•· Trade a Recycled Costume-I just pulled out my costume box from storage and low and behold, there are at least three different costumes there. Have a get together with a bunch of friends and trade costumes.

•· Dim the Lights: Isn't the point of Halloween to get spooked? Dim those lights and set the mood or just light candles.

•· Offer Healthy Candy Alternatives: How about offering snacks that actually do a body good? A box of organic raisins, an organic fruit bar, a granola bar, nuts, a trinket or a treasure, or an organic juice box.

•· Use a Pillow Sheet for a Candy Bag: No need to go out and buy one of those plastic pumpkins that will end up in a landfill. Pull off one of your pillow's sheets or use one of the reusable bags you use when you grocery shop (you do use those right?)

I am sure this list is just the tip of the ice-burg...

Vios Greek Restaurant is Opening its Second Location at the Third Place Book Store in Ravenna.

If you have eaten at Vios Cafe up on Capital Hill in Seattle, you know the food is good and you will be quite excited to know that there will be a second location for you to patron. Unfortunately, a well know café called the Honey Bear, once located in the Ravenna Third Place bookstore, will be giving up its spot to make room for the new eatery. For those of you who may have picked up a muffin addiction, you can still go up to the Honey Bear Bakery up North, which is located in Lake Forest Park's Third Place Books (there are two locations).

Vios Greek restaurant is sure to be a great dining replacement for the cozy, well-liked bookstore in Ravenna. The Greek sandwiches, grilled skewered lamb and chicken, hommus, tzatziki , babaganouze, rustic breads, wines, and an assortment of other food, will entice you back for more. Don't forget to finish your meal with a taste of Baklava, the true Greek dessert! Vios Cafe is a great place to bring the family with its communal type seating (at least that's how it is at their Capital Hill location) and a kid's area stocked with books and toys.

I am looking forward to experiencing the new soon-to-open Vios Café in Ravenna and I will report back when I do.

Kayaking + Margaritas + Delicious Tacos = Seattle Fun!!

Have you ever sat around in Seattle wondering what to do with yourself? You have been to the aquarium, you've been to the Space Needle, you've been to the Pike Place Market. You have done most of the touristy things. You want something new. Well, then I have the perfect day planned for you.

This is a great mission to do solo, with a friend, or with a group of friends (even children).

Go down to the Agua Verde Paddle Club in University District. Here you can rent kayaks by the hour. You have a couple of options on where to paddle to. You can paddle all the way over to Kirkland and enjoy lunch there. You can float around in the natural surroundings of the Arboretum, or you can go and check out the many houseboats we have here in Seattle. Whatever you choose, you are bound to have a great time. While it can be peaceful and relaxing being out on the water, remember, kayaking is exercise. You can and probably will burn some calories and some have been known to have sore arms the next day. However, once you arrive back to the dock to turn in your kayak, a wonderful restaurant awaits upstairs.

The Agua Verde Paddle Club Café offers a delicious array of Mexican fare, often using natural, organic ingredients. They have a mission to provide healthy food in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. What does this mean to them?

•· Meat is produced from animals raised on farms (as opposed to factories), given vegetarian feed without growth hormones or antibiotics

•· Seafood is caught or raised sustainably using eco-friendly techniques

•· Their produce is grown organically and obtained from local sources when possible

•· The coffee is shade-grown and produced by small co-ops and specially blended for Agua Verde

In addition to Agua Verde's interest in promoting good health, their food is wonderful and their Margaritas aren't too bad themselves.

What a wonderful way to end a perfect day of Seattle kayaking. SLUUUUUUUUUUUURRP!

If it's Yellow, Let it Mellow. If it's Brown, Flush it Down.

The first time I heard this saying was when I lived down in Mexico for some time. I have carried it with me since then. I don't see the need to flush the toilet every time I go to the bathroom, unless of course, it's brown. I think this is an easy way to save water. You should try it. A few tips though:

Don't go to the bathroom too many times without flushing. You will clog the toilet with all of the toilet paper you're using. That is, of course, if you're female. I suggest going 3-4 times before flushing.
Try to warn your guests about your potty habits before they enter the bathroom or else try to flush before they enter. It can seem like you have lazy habits rather then a mission to conserve water. Believe me on this one...I have been embarrassed a few times.
Consider buying a dual flush toilet that allows you to choose how much flow is needed to flush.
Put the toilet seat down each time you go so you don't have the visual each time you enter the bathroom.

This is just another way to live consciously for the good of our planet.

Why I Quit Buying Bottled Water and Why You Should Too.

You have heard about the thousands of miles of floating plastics, pollution and debris out in the middle of our oceans, right? Well, we should be ashamed of ourselves. We humans consume, consume, and consume. We think little about the effects our actions have on the environment. We act as though there are endless supplies of resources and that our waste will just magically disappear. Well, I am here to tell you if you haven't already heard....You're wrong! It is up to each one of us individually to make a difference. Now I don't blame you individually. I know many of us were raised to not even think twice about where our garbage goes. We are happy putting it in the trash (or the recycling please), wheeling our carts out to the curbs each week, and never thinking twice about it.

I am begging you to stop this destructive lifestyle.

One way to make a difference is to stop buying bottled water. I know the convenience of Water-to-Go is nice but there are other ways that are much less wasteful. Are you ready to hear how?

Step 1: Invest in a water purifying system or don't. Tap water may be acceptable to you.

I prefer not to have fluoride in my water as it is not utilized in its natural form but is rather an industrial waste by-product. Yum, industrial waste...thanks (insert your city water company here). You probably don't believe me but I encourage you to do your own research. Flouride can effect brain development, lower your IQ, has possible links to thyroid conditions, can damage your immune system, can cause flourosis , can increase your risk of osteoporosis, and on and on. Why do you think so many European countries have banned fluoridation in their water systems? Do I smell corporate greed here in America?

One of the few home water purifying systems that you can buy that removes fluoride from your tap water is Custom Pure. It is a wonderful system! I even have it hooked up to my refrigerator so my ice is fluoride-free too. Don't be fooled! Systems like Brita or Pur do NOT remove fluoride. The Custom Pure MB series also removes Lead, Arsenic, Chlorine, Nitrates, Sulfates, etc.

Named after a former Senior Minister at University Congregational Church and a longtime Seattle Times columnist, the Dale Turner YMCA of Greater Seattle officially opened this past Saturday, October 4, 2008. Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo is Open During the Winter.

Well, I made it to the zoo in the spring when the flowers first started blooming and I enjoyed myself so much, I made a vow to get back there before the weather turned too cold. A few weeks ago when we still had nice weather, I got the chance to go back. The Woodland Park Zoo is such an amazing way to get away from the buzz of the city and to help me remember how amazing nature is. My favorite animals are probably the giraffes, hippos, and the gorillas. My daughter had a wonderful experience with one of the gorillas. They were touching each other through the glass, admiring one another. Then, along came a group of men and the gorilla ran over to them and got up close to the glass and puffed his chest out as though he was protecting her. It was pretty cool. She got the chance to feed the giraffes this time around, which was also a great experience. Taking the time to relish in all of the sights, sounds, and smells of the zoo is an experience that I will never grow out of and one that I will be sure to allow my child to enjoy often. If you haven't made it to the zoo in awhile, GO! It is still open throughout the year and although the weather will be much cooler, just bundle up and go. In fact, I have never experienced the zoo in the middle of winter. I bet it offers a different opportunity than the birds-chirping, flowers blooming, baby animals running around experience I am used to, since I typically only go in the spring or summer.

Think Pink? NO, Think Green! Healthier and Greener Insulation Choices.

We are all familiar with the pink fiberglass insulation but for the most part conventional insulation materials are synthetically produced and contain non-renewable, toxic, and often non-recyclable materials. Consumers are bombarded on a daily basis as to what is healthy and what is not. With the death of asbestos insulation and the once banned urea formaldehyde-based insulation, the focus has now turned to fiberglass. I am not an insulation connoisseur, so I am not going to go into great detail about what I believe is the best choice, but rather give you some options of what people are classifying as greener and healthier options:

Straw Bale-straw is a renewable resource that acts as an excellent insulation and has exceptional fire resistance due to the lack of air circulation that penetrates the bales.

Recycled Denim-made with post-industrial recycled denim, it saves waste from our landfills, made from cotton fibers, it is a rapidly renewable resource, holds more heat and absorbs sound, no formaldehyde or other VOC's (volatile organic compounds). Look at Bonded Logic's website to learn more.

Recycled Paper- a cellulose insulation derived from 100% recycled newsprint, doesn't have any formaldehyde, chlorofluorocarbons, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other toxic substances. It's a great alternative to blown fiberglass or bat insulation. It can be layered into walls being built, or blown into attic spaces and already sheetrocked walls for extra protection from the cold.

Sheep Wool-a highly effective insulation that is made from natural, sustainable, renewable and recyclable material, thermally and acoustically insulating and flame resistant.

Water Blown Soy-Based Polyurethane- It's easy to install and doesn't have any off-gassing, and even though it can cost a little more than other types of insulation, spray foam can actually save property owners up to 35% per year on energy bills This insulation seals your property's thermal envelope to make it more energy efficient while also blocking mold and mildew, controlling moisture, and repelling rodents and insects.

While there are many choices out there when it comes to finding a green and healthy choice of insulation, overall, look for insulation products with recycled or recyclable content, low emissions, no formaldehyde or other pollutants, and preferably made with rapidly renewable and natural resources.

Update on the Mountlake Terrace Downtown Revitalization

I had a woman contact me the other day wondering what changes were taking place towards the Mountlake Terrace Downtown Revitalization. Since the city hasn't updated their website in awhile, I contacted Shane Hope, the Community and Economic Development Director for the city of MLT. He was very helpful and passed along the following list to show the efforts and progress towards the revitalization:

--New downtown regulations (at http://www.ci.mountlake-terrace.wa.us/forBusinesses/pdf/BCD_Amend_ORD_08.04.08_Fnl.pdf ) and design standards (at http://www.ci.mountlake-terrace.wa.us/forBusinesses/pdf/DesignStandards_TC_August2008_Fnl.pdf ) implement the adopted Town Center Plan.

--The Town Center Environmental Impact Statement was issued last year.

--A Town Center Planned Action Ordinance to streamline the SEPA process for downtown projects was adopted last year.

--New parking standards (with stall dimensions + options for shared parking) have been adopted.

--The City has incorporated $3 million into its capital plan to develop a downtown public plaza.

--Mountlake Terrace has adopted a "Sustainability Strategy" encouraging green building and other practices.

--A new five-level park-and-ride garage (1/4 mile from downtown, adjacent to I-5 and 236^th)) is under construction.

--Construction of a Sounds Transit "Freeway Station" (an express bus station that will be in the median of I-5 and connect via a pedestrian bridge to the adjacent park-and-ride garage) will start in early 2009 and be completed in 2010.

--A new citywide Economic Vitality Strategy is expected to be ready for public review by October 10.

--The City Council has appointed a taskforce to provide recommendations by the end of the year on what to do regarding the need for new civic facilities, including a community center that could be located downtown.

--Our "development services" (permitting) program has been revamped to be even more efficient.

Qualities of a Green Home.

Location: Must NOT be built on environmentally sensitive sites like prime farmland, wetlands and endangered species habitats, ideally in walking distance to transportation, shopping, groceries, banks, post office, library, etc. (less use of gas)

Size: Larger home=more resources/more $

Smaller home=less resources/less $

Building Design: takes advantage of natural light (less need for artificial lighting), shaded from direct sun

Green Building Materials: non toxic building materials, low- and zero-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints and sealants, use of salvaged and recycled material, use of rapidly renewable resources such as bamboo and FSC (forest Stewardship Council) certified wood.

Windows & Doors: seal their openings tightly to avoid heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter.

Energy Efficiency: A green home has energy-efficient lighting, heating, cooling and water-heating systems. Appliances should have ENERGY STAR® ratings.

Renewable Energy: Ideally, the home should generate some of its own energy with technologies like photovoltaic systems or wind energy

Water Efficiency: water-conserving irrigation system and water-efficient kitchen and bathroom fixtures, Rainwater collection and storage system.

Indoor Air Quality: The HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system should filter all incoming air and vent stale air outside.

Landscaping: drought-tolerant plants rather than water-guzzling plants, organic garden

Most likely, you have a local market such as PCC or Whole Foods that is a postive contributor to the neighborhood by offering organic, and healthy food options. Not all of us, however, are lucky enough to have the small MOM-and-POP-style store that Sunset Hill's Green Market offers. One of my clients told me about the store when I was showing them a home just down the street. Later that week, I was in the neighborhood again and needed to make a quick stop to up my energy supply (by eating). I thought I would check it out and I was most pleasantly suprised. I didn't even consider that because the name of the store was "Green Market" that they would supply healthy food choices. Since I am so passionate about the green movement, this store is right up my alley. Are you paying for that water you use to water your yard? Well if it rains anything like it does here in Seattle, you should be gathering that water for free. All you need to do is buy or make a rain barrel to collect the water. The rain barrel I use is a great rust orange color barrel that used to hold peppercinis. There are many types of rain barrels. You are bound to find one that will look nice in your yard. Place the rain barrel beneath the gutter spout and start collecting. IT IS THAT EASY. I bought a gutter extender so that I was able to properly route the water. Please don't drink the water as the run-off from your roof can add toxins, but it is great for most applications in the yard or your indoor plants.

How to make your own rain barrel.

Ideally having a cistern that will hold larger quantities of water is better, since there are times here in the summer where we don't see rain for weeks. Yes, don't laugh...that can happen here in Seattle. That way you will always have water available when you need it. You can also connect several rain barrels together to increase the amount of water you can collect. Make sure that your barrels come complete with mosquito netting as you don't want a breeding ground on your property.

Collecting rainwater has been enjoyable for me. Yes, I know I am probably not saving huge sums of money but to me it is the principle. Why pay for and use something that is given to us for free. There is something special about going over to my barrels, filling up the watering can (warning, it is slower than just turning on the hose spigot, but this reminds me to SLOW DOWN in life), and reusing the water in my garden. This water doesn't contain the added chlorine and flouride that the city puts in our water and the plants don't need it. They are happy, happy, happy with the recycled water they are given.

Paramount Park in Shoreline, WA is located at the corner of NE 155th and 8th NE. It is a fabulous neighborhood park that boasts a great play area for the little ones, a baseball field, a lap for running, biking, etc that is about 1/2 mile or so long, great grassy space, picnic tables, and more. It is well-kept and clean. My daughter loves the climbing wall at the playground and her father likes the fact that there is a skateboard park for him to enjoy as well. Abstract expressionist Mark Rothko. I have always been a fan of his color field series. I saw his work in person at the Tate museum in London and it is energizing.

I originally wrote down the profound name of "God" and then went on to explain some of my beliefs, but upon proofreading this post, I decided to delete my answer in fear of getting into a religious discussion or DEBATE, as often happens here on AR. We all know that your god might not be my god and vice versa...therefore I decided to leave my religious beliefs off of this thread. Perhaps another day when I am feeling more adventorous...

•5. What did you want to be when you grew up?

Funny thing, growing up I wanted to be a veterinarian...but as an adult...I am not a huge fan of pets. I love animals and all of their greatness. I just went to the zoo this past week and was reminded of how AMAZING creatures are. However, when it comes to pets...I can do without. I am just not one of those dog or cat lovers. Please don't be offended. I like your cat or dog, I just don't need to have one of my own. So I find it quite ironic that growing up I wanted to be a vet.

Then in high school I decided I was going to be a lawyer. While working as a nanny one summer, I watched too much television during the child's naptime. I was force-fed the OJ Simpson story as many of Americans were. At the end of that long summer when OJ got away with murder, I was SO FURIOUS. I could not believe there were lawyers out there defending someone who was obviously guilty. I mean we ALL watched that police chase of the white Bronco, driven by OJ, why was he running if he didn't do it???? These lawyers defended him fo fame and to pad their wallet. I decided that job just wasn't for me and decided to go to school to be a teacher (yes, you always hear that teachers make great real estate agents).

•6. What is the most interesting piece of trivia you know?

I am the worst at being able to remember trivia or jokes on the spot. If you asked me to tell you a joke, I probably couldn't...Oh except for the one dirty joke I forced myself to remember because I always hated when people said "You can't even remember one joke!!" Sorry, some great piece of trivia will probably hit me some time after I post this BLOG. If so, I will try to come back and edit it in.

•7. If you could live in any point of history, what would it be and why?

I would want to go back to a time where there were no electronics...computers (I spend too much time on them), televisions, telephones, etc., no mass productions of any kind. I would want to have the opportunity to live solely from the land, harvesting and hunting for my own food...really getting in touch with nature and the struggles that came all of these conveniences. I see in our daily lives, how much waste we make, how much we consume...and we almost never feel full or satisfied. I often dream about what it would be like to have it all taken away. Would I stop to smell the flowers more often...You BETCHA...would I appreciate each bite I put in my mouth....You BETCHA...would I use my imagination more often...You BETCHA...would I stop and just do nothing...You BETCHA...

•8. What is the most interesting job you have ever held?

I have done some pretty interesting jobs in my day from paper routes as a child, to pruning peach trees in the orchards, to being the secretary of the police department in the very small town of Soap Lake, WA where I went to middle and high school, as well as being a nanny, a bartender, a cocktail server, a coffee shop owner, and more...but probably the most interesting was teaching Third Grade in an Elementary School in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico. I lived down there a couple of times in my twenties and after graduating from CWU with a teaching degree (I majored in Art as well) I decided it would be a great place to experience my first classroom. It was such a joy working with those children. They were really pushed hard. They endured an entire Spanish curriculum in ½ a day and then an English curriculum with me for the second half. I had 48 students (24 in the morning, 24 in the afternoon). I ended up leaving Mexico due to my first major heartbreak. I only wish now that I could have found the strength to stay for my students but I needed to come back to the states to be with family. I still think about that class often.
