A tool and great advice to protect you from the Conficker worm, Realtors need their computers

My IT guy is pure genies when it comes to computers...wish I knew a 1/1000 of what he does. Since my computer knowledge on a scale of 1-10, I'm about a 2. Needles to say Richard also has a lot of patience, he would have to in order to help me while I'm leaning over his shoulder asking questions, while hes trying to fix my last screw up. But he is always kind, and soft spoken and tells me it's OK to go into the administrative, settings of my computer, that's how I will learn. He know he is close and can get to me quickly if I mess up too much. Richard also takes care of my Network and the 10 computers attached to if for my co. Liz Carter & Team Realty in Katy TX.

Bill told me about this Conficker worm and I thought it was an April Fools jock...no, no, no...it's the real deal. I wanted to share some things I got from my IT Geek to explain, and let you know some things you can do to protect yourself, your business. Since now days when the computer is down everything else is down, and no work seems to get done. I stated selling home in Houston, Katy, TX in 1976, we were upset if our carbon paper was missing from a contact...no faxes, no cell phones, and certainly no Computer/ Internet. I need to write a blog on how I sold real estate in Houston, and Katy Texas in prehistoric days

What does the Conficker worm do?

The Conficker worm has created secure infrastructure for cybercrime. The worm allows its creators to remotely install software on infected machines. What will that software do? We don’t know. Most likely the worm will be used to create a botnet that will be rented out to criminals who want to send SPAM, steal IDs and direct users to online scams and phishing sites.

The Conficker worm mostly spreads across networks. If it finds a vulnerable computer, it turns off the automatic backup service, deletes previous restore points, disables many security services, blocks access to a number of security web sites and opens infected machines to receive additional programs from the malware’s creator. The worm then tries to spread itself to other computers on the same network.

How does the worm infect a computer?

The Downadup worm tries to take advantage of a problem with Windows (a vulnerability) called MS08-067 to quietly install itself. Users who automatically receive updates from Microsoft are already protected from this. The worm also tries to spread by copying itself into shared folders on networks and by infecting USB devices such as memory sticks.

Who is at risk?

Users whose computers are not configured to receive patches and updates from Microsoft and who are not running an up to date antivirus product are most at risk. Users who do not have a genuine version of Windows from Microsoft are most at risk since pirated system usually cannot get Microsoft updates and patches.

What to do if you are infected

If you are reading this page, your computer is probably not infected with Conficker as the worm blocks access to most security web sites.

If you have a computer that is infected, you will need to use an uninfected computer to download a specialized Conficker removal tool from. The tool is available here.

Advice to Stay Safe from the Downadup Worm: Let's let good win over the evil computer hacker!

Run a good security suite (we are partial to Norton Internet Security 2009 and Norton 360 Version 3.0).

Keep your computer updated with the latest patches. If you don’t know how to do this, have someone help you set your system to update itself.

Don’t use “free” security scans that pop up on many web sites. All too often these are fake, using scare tactics to try to get you to purchase their “full” service. In many cases these are actually infecting you while they run. There is reason to believe that the creators of the Conficker worm are associated with some of these fake security products.

Turn off the “autorun” feature that will automatically run programs found on memory sticks and other USB devices.

Be smart with your passwords. This includes

Change your passwords periodically

Use complex passwords – no simple names or words, use special characters and numbers

Using a separate, longer password for each site that has sensitive personal information or access to your bank accounts or credit cards.

Now that my Hero Richard has come to my rescue again...tomorrow at Liz Carter & Team Realty in Katy TX will be a "normal" computer running, office full of folks who want to buy or sell Real Estate! Or it could be an April Fools joke after all! Either way I'm ready and hope this helps you too.

Lady Bug's

I'd really like to know where the name came from, does anyone know? If you do please pass it on. In Houston, and Katy TX were I live we buy cartons of this wonderful little bugs every year. They are perfect to let loose in your garden, landscaping, and just around the grass. They eat the bad bugs that eat you plants & flowers, so they do a really good job for us and are cute at the same time. The up-close with just the Lady Bug was taken at night on my patio furniture (it's white). You should water the area you are going to release them in, and release them at dusk to increase your chances of having them hang out at your place rather than going to the neighbors yard to eat their pesky bugs. The other was during the day waling, still can't believe I saw it....these little ladies are small! GO GREEN with Lady Bugs...good bugs for your gardens.

Tomorrow I'll show you another great shot of a friendly "GOOD" bug you need in your garden...it's not as cute as these prettlyprettly little lady bugs!

When you find out you have touched the lives of others in a positive way it is such a FEEL GOOD moment

Sometimes you never know when you have had an impact on someone and when you find out you have, it just gives me the warm fuzzes. I have always loved helping, mentoring and encouraging other Realtors and people in general. Over the last 33 years most of my impact has been on other agents, since I have been in this crazy, exciting business of helping people buy and sell homes in the Katy TX, greater Houston area for so long.

Often you might go a long time (or never) without knowing that someone has benefited, learned or been inspired from something you said or did, maybe even many years ago. Recently my partner and great niece Sandie, came over after an MCE class. In talking about our company, business, life in general, Sandie off handily mentioned, "Oh by the way, one of the other Realtors in the class said to tell you hello. She said you were her inspiration to get into and stay in Real Estate and really wanted to say "Thank You"! Sandie did not realize how wonderful that made me feel, or maybe she did. When she realized the extent of what it meant to me, she said, "Aunt Liz I hear it all the time you have helped a lot of people". Wow, pretty cool, you just never know when your path will cross with someone you can help or that can help you.

The old saying about "When the pupil is ready the teacher will appear" is oh so true. So remember to spread the love, make someone feel great today, make someone smile today, give someone encouragement today...it takes so little and it can mean so much. It also will come back to you ten fold, it certainly has for me...especially here on Active Rain!

My Dear friend Jason ,

I finally figured out how you do it and just had to "share" , the devil made me do this of course. It came to me in a blinding flash of the obvious. After our recent phone call during my last trip to my second home. St. Luke's Hospital in the Medical Center of Houston TX. You have cloned yourself, and it looks like at a young age. I was in the hospital a week this time with only phenomena, so felt good enough to engage my brain!

You were kind enough to call and check up-on me for the latest state of my mental and physical, body & soul condition. As always it was such a joy talking to you and I happened to look at the time we spent on the phone...23 minutes. Now just by it's self not your style, you were also preparing dinner for the kids and Pam while talking to me. Another one of you set off to write the post updating our active rain friends about my latest hospital stay this past week with this post: Please Pray for My Friend (and Fellow ActiveRain) Liz Carter ,

Another Jason was talking to Pam and planning out all your social, family matters. Mainly getting ready for that new baby girl. While another Jason was down at the church helping every way you could. Then another Jason tail spin out to make sure your thriving Austin TX Real Estate office and agents needed anything. I'm sure another of my "Jason's" was dreaming up a new song contest for AR, and writing tutorials for all us ACTIVE RAIN DUMMIES. Still another Jason was starting his new book....hey Active Rain for Dummies is not a bad title if you want to do one about your experiences here (I get royalty rights for coming up with the name).

So let me here it from the rest of our AR friends, "How does Jason Crouch do it" , what do you think his secret is? With everything you do not cut corners either, always giving 100% of yourself. Your post have a huge following for a reason, you my friend are great and take to heart everything you do...it shows. You take the time to listen and offer encouragement to anyone in need with such soul searching sweetness.. You got me enough prayers and well wishes there is just NO WAY I now will have smooth sailing for a long time. I truly have been uplifted and feel very blessed by the outpouring of concern, help, encouragement, but mostly the friendships of my Active Rain Family..

We are family

My first post after being off AR for so long...I hardly know where to start...I have so many to thank! I'll be doing another one some to name so of the most loyal friends I have here on the Rain, but wanted to just say how much ALL of you mean to me. This would be the perfect place to put the song, "We Are Family", however my main computer is in the shop. Plus I'm still getting used to all the changes on AR, WOW! Just when I was getting to where everything was, I'm gone for a couple of months and they changed everything without consulting me!!! That's just wrong :).

I wish I could just wave a majic wand and take us all here for a few weeks of group hugs & thanks!

One thing that has not changed is the beautiful people here on active rain! When I started reading all the notes, comments, card, and encouragement everyone left me on Judis' post, and on my post (Money Doesn't Grow On Trees...Does It?), that Marchel wrote a post to direct everyone too. Well I'm glad no one was here seeing me laugh and cry to my computer, they might have locked me up for good! It was so wonderful to know after all the time I was gone you did not forget me. There were many prayers said for me as well, and they worked. My friends in the Rain you are the best second family in the world to me.

Thank you is not the right thing to say but will have to do for now...Thank you all it meant the world to me. Marchel was tireless in her efforts to update everyone, keep our group up to speed, call me at the hospitals, she even went in and answered some of the comments to my posts. Judi also wrote a post that messages were left on also and called to check on me several times. There literally were hundreds of messages, I think Dale left one everyday :). After 29 days in the hospital it sure was nice to read them all. You guys are INCREDIBLE, and kind beyond words!

My Texas Real Estate group was in very capable hands...another thanks to Marchel for that too. We are now over 500 members and rank # 21 out th thouslands of groups now on AR. Time for another contest? Let me know what you would like to base our contest on and I'll get started right away! Maybe "Best Hospital in your town"? ...I have a great entry for that as well as the "Worst Hospital", but we want to stay positive, right?

The Friendship Ball was rolled to me so I need to get busy on that one, it will be a long list. Thanks again for everything and I'll be by to visit everyone soon. Love Liz

Hey Great Broup

Guess it doesn't take that much for me these days ! I love these little guys too. Can't wait to get caught up with all my "Stuff", including the 100's of e-mails, so I can get back home...to my 2nd home that is, Active Rain! I've had a bug move into my lungs a month ago, and even after 3 Weeks of antibiotics, a week in the hospital, they did not want to leave! Well, how dare they, nasty, stinky things + they did not pay the rent, so they are outta here. See you all soon, Liz

Just because Jason is a highly successful Real Estate broker in Austin, TX, one of the top-notch bloggers on Active Rain with a huge following, (I know he managed to post 10 blogs on AR during the party...but I can't prove it, yet!) plus it also happened to be the day before his 38^thbirthday, but that does not give him the right to rob me (Liz Carter, Real Estate broker in Katy, TX, (and not one of the top bloggers on Active Rain) of a month of my precious time. I inflicted severe mental anguish on myself during this time also. I mean who does Jason think he is? Jason is a big hearted bear of a man, with a quick & remarkable sense of humor, an avid reader and blogger of quality post, kind, good natured, willing to help everyone, faithful servant, honest, caring and so much more. Jason is a good man, a loving son, husband, father (of soon to be four great kids) and my friend. So I forgive myself for going so NUTS on this "Slide Show"...you deserved better though...oops I forgot, I forgive myself.

However I felt I had to bring to your attention the "dark side of Jason", he gets to know people, really know them so you are at his mercy. He cares and gives so much that you want to return the favor. We met on Active Rain, and we got to know one another, so he knows my strengths and weaknesses and can use me with his clever ways. So I have spent the last month, and untold hours trying to make a presentable slide show of the Active Rain gathering/Birthday Party he so graciously arranged, hosted and paid for in August at the County Line restaurant in Austin TX. It was a big hit, TX Bloggers, friends,some special clients & his family were on hand. See Jason knows I'm compulsive, obsessive, over the top, out of control, type AAA personality, and I HAD to make a GREAT slide show of our Austin get together for him.

After putting together at least two dozen slide shows in different programs I have managed to turn out a less than"GREAT" slide show. It is passable at best and might be the worst one I've ever done, although some of the captions. are pretty funny. table all by himself :) AT LAST, my mediocre attempt at creating something very special for, My Special Friend Jason Crouch.

I hope you enjoyed it, and please NO COMMENTS on the misspelled words in the captions...I know they are there, OK! Laugh & Enjoy. It has been brutal for me, but I'll spare you the gory details...unless you really want to hear some funny, dumb things I did during this "slide show fiasco". The picture of lady on road is kinda how I felt after attempting 10-12 Maybe I'll do a post on it later...much latter :-)

PS...A FEW OTHER FACTORS (besides my inept computer skills, and obsessive need to have it perfect), FOR THE DELAY OF THIS POST; Hurricane Ike decided to pay us on the Gulf Coast at Galveston a little visit, Houston, Katy, & Spring all get the brunt of storms in our area. We had over TWO MILLION+ PEOPLE WITHOUT POWER for weeks, and some still have none! Then some very nasty little devil bacteria bugs decided to make my lungs there permanent residence. They moved in 3 ½ weeks ago, and for the last week have been here at the hospital with me. They must really like me, the doctors at St. Luke's in the Medical Center of Houston (one of the finest in the world), have been hitting them with everything short of a nuke bomb (I nixed that idea). I'm hoping to get sprung tomorrow or the next day, and they are not coming back to my home with me! There is just not enough room in there for me and all of them, they are nasty roommates plus they have NOT PAID ANY RENT...so they're outta here by gosh. UPDATE; i JUST GOT SPRUNG...at home, yes it feels great! I've really missed Active Rain, and my friends here.

The ladies all enjoyed Ice Cream Social & Cupcakes , Baskin Robbins on Mason Rd & Cupcakes provided by Cupcake Central. They especially enjoyed the "Pink Limo" that was a blast to get in and take pictures, this is a locally owned limo by two ladies who live right here in Katy. They also had on had members from Carries Heart there to speak about the upcoming Halloween event that will take place on October 31^st at La Cantera the Cinco Ranch Ladies Club will partner to offer a "Fun House". They also had on hand from Special Pals to talk about the event that will take place at the LaCenterra that the Ladies Club will partner with to offer a Mardi Gras party this year to benefit the animals. They also had members from the Susan G. Komen organization to speak about the spring walk/run that the Cinco Ranch Ladies Club will we working on with them for April 09'.

The Cinco Ranch Ladies Club is also planning a "Rock the Runway" to benefit Brain Cancer Luncheon for Saturday, November 6, 2008 at Pine Forest Country Club to help benefit one of Katy's very own families the "Baker Family" the fashions will be provided by J. They are also working on many fun activities for their regular monthly meetings at the Golf Club at Cinco Ranch that meets on the last Tuesday, of the month at 7:00 p.m. for socializing and 7:30 p.m. for their meeting. I was also the historian for 10+ years, served on the board many times, and am a past president of the Cinco Ranch Ladies Club. Texas Active Rain Members Meet in Austin to Celebrate

Texas Active Rain members are a very friendly group of bloggers, and must really like each other and getting together...This was our second gathering in just five months!

In May Ricki Eichler hosted our gathering in Bandera TX, which was my first chance to meet the REAL people behind my computer screen. Recently Jason Crouch hosted our second gathering this year in Austin TX, at the County Line restaurant. Both meeting places just happened to be in the gorgeous Hill Country part of TX, one of the gems of our great state. Jason not only organized the whole affair in Austin, he also paid for everything. It was a combination networking of Jason's Active Rain friends, but also a celebration of his 38^th birthday, which was the next day. Jason also invited some of his friends from Church, and his community. His beautiful wife, mom and kids were also there.

The County Line restaurant is right on part of Lake Austin, it was an idyllic setting, with large outdoor decks and a big grassy area going right up to the water. The Country Line is famous for its BBQ, and all of their bragging rights are dead on...it was delicious! Ribs, chicken, cowl slaw, potato salad, homemade bread, yummy soul food. Judi Morgan coordinated having two cakes brought for Jason, one a TX theme, and one a Power Ranger theme (we all know Jason is a big kid at heart), he did restrain himself from jumping up in the air with his new toys. The one Chocolate, one Vanilla cakes were served up with homemade vanilla ice cream made by the Country Line. I happened to catch a few belts being let out...discretely :-).

Active Rain Ambassador Tom Plant flew in again from CA, I guess he likes us; he was at our Bandera gathering also. This time Tom was accompanied by his Sweet heart Laura. She is a delightful lady and we all enjoyed getting to meet her. Their wedding is planned for next year, so this time TX will have to go to CA. Lots of people came who I had not met before, which was another treat, as well as many from our first get together. Texans are truly one of the friendliest states, everyone just makes you feel like an old friend, and many of us are now.

Thank you Jason for a truly wonderful day, Bill and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. So did Mr. Rhett Butler, and I convinced Debra A. Brooks his kisses were sweeter (had a tooth pulled and teeth cleaned just for Deb), otherwise she had threatened "no loving". I would like to thank all my active rain friends for their support, and friendship, you guys mean the world to me. Liz

PS, slide show still working on...but it will be great if I can ever figure out how to work thesilly thing...anybody know about flash slide show maker??? Call me :-)...till then here are a couple more pictures of the great time we had...enjoy, L

Contest Update!

Just in case all of you don't read the group e-mails, wanted to make sure you knew that the, Beat The Heat, contest deadline has been extended till Sept. 9th. For two reasons.

1. The long Labor Day Weekend that most spent with family...this will give you a chance to still get an entry in.

2. Also I have been undergoing treatment for Hep. C, and have to take an injection once a week. The last couple of weeks was a littler tougher, so I did not get much done. I'm feeling ad doing much better now, and I truly appreciate your calls and e-mails to check on me. I got this dreadful disease 40 years ago from a blood transfusion, but it did not start the major damage to my liver until 8 years ago. Which is when I found out I had it...that's why they refer to it as "The Silent Killer" There is an 80% chance that this 6 months to 1 year of treatments will cure me. That's were my betting money is going :-)...I'm gonna kick some butt. Just a few curve balls every once in awhile.

I also have my Austin get together post and slide show working and should have that out in the next couple of days.

We are up to 397 great members, so thanks so much for helping me spread the word for new members. I also totally appricate all of your great post. This group has turned out some very fine writing. In fact I'm a little surprised we have not been featured on the AR e-mail group. We are also one of the most active groups on AR.

Help on how to spell check & CORRECT EVERY WORD in your entire blog with ONE CLICK!

This is the best thing I have found to share with everyone on active rain! You can spell check your entire blog/post and automatically correct ALL errors with ONE click of your mouse. The Google toolbar, it's awesome for so many reasons. The whole time AR's spell check was down I didn't even notice it, since I've been using this for over a year now, and never us Active Rain's spell check for many reasons. Just go in and set the Google tool bar to be on with whatever other tool bars you have that are at the top of your computer screen. I have three toolbars at the top of my computer screen, Google, AOL and A lot. I use them for different things, but the one I use most is the Google spell check. I did another blog sometime back that list additional benefits, but at the time did not know about the ONE CLICK FIXES ALL. This is a link to other cool things the Google spell check does, other than those listed here; Active Rain, Spell check help...you can use Google for AR, tutorial on how to spell check till AR gets theirs fixed. The only thing I've noticed different from what is on the previous blog is Google spell check does not offer other suggestions. It did, so maybe it's me?

Try it...you'll like love it!

BY FAR THE BIGGEST ADVANTAGE TO USING Google TOOLBAR SPELL CHECK IS THE ABILITY TO CHECK AND CORRECT EVERY MISSPELLED WORD WITH ONE CLICK OF YOUR MOUSE! Talk about save time, yes a ton of time, especially if you are as bad of a speller as I am :). I can have 40 misspelled words and they are fixed in ONE SECOND! The wording indented is from the Google toolbar settings:

Spellcheck: Basics

The Google Toolbar Spellcheck feature can correct any spelling mistakes you make when you type into a web form, including web-based email, discussion forums, and even intranet web applications.

To run Google Spellcheck, please click the Spellcheck button on your Toolbar. Spellcheck sends text for review to Google servers so we can catch and highlight any incorrect spellings.

If you're feeling lucky, you can let the Google Spellcheck feature automatically correct your spelling by clicking on the arrow to the right of the Spellcheck button and clicking "AutoFix." Don't worry; if Google Spellcheck isn't feeling lucky, it will highlight the words it's unsure of and allow you to correct them yourself.

Load Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer so it's always on the top of your computer screen, when you are ready to spell check (go ahead and put your tags in since it checks those too) the spell check tab on the tool bar is in the middle to the right of "Popups okay", it has (ABC with a green check mark under the ABC to and the left it says Check), so it's ABC Check...remember it also has the green arrow under the ABC. Click on the drop down and select Auto Fix. Like it says above don't worry you can always undo it if not satisfied with the changes, but I have never had to.

BE SURE TO LOOK UP AT THE TAB WHEN DONE, if there are no spell check errors, nothing happens so you just sit there. The words go away quickly so hover your cursor over the ABC Check tab and it will say "No spelling errors were identified". Which means you are a much better spelling than I am. Don't close your eyes like my monkey :), but using the new way to spell check will relax you since it's so easy to use :)

When Google spell check finds misspelled words they are turned bright red and with a light blue screen it's so easy to find the misspelled words (see Active Rain, Spell check help...you can use Google for AR, tutorial on how to spell check till AR gets theirs fixed. for all the other features it has), and the computer screen of what your are spell checking i.e. a blog turns light blue, then just click on the Auto Fix and it's done in one second. All the bright red words turn green, when you hit Stop on the ABC tab everything goes back to normal.

You have to go back and click STOP when the spell check is finished, or your can't post it ,send comments or e-mails, etc. The ABC tab has either Check or Stop on it depending on what you are doing. Remember to go back after your spell check to the tab and click on it. When you go back to the ABC Check button hit stop and the screen goes back to the original color (your computer screen turns a different color during the spell check), that's it, you are done!

Let me know how this works out for you, there is not doubt in my mind you will simply LOVE THIS FEATURE of adding the Google Toolbar to your computer screen, and use it for all of the things you do on Active Rain. You will never use the spell check on AR's once you've used this! Another Plus is when AR's spell check is messing up you wont even know it...I didn't. PS, you can go back and forth between the Stop and Check on the ABC tab. I find I do it several times, you will see as you work with it why that is helpful.

Lost Riches Could Be Yours!

I'll share my secret with my Active Rain friends, like I did with all my past clients. I received checks for $1,130..., that's One Thousand One Hundred and Thirty dollars, YIPPEE! This is money I didn't even know I had, which is even cooler. Since my lost riches came in the form of a check...and paper is made from trees...Yes, Money does grow on trees in Katy Texas, but you have to know where to look? OK, are you ready? Just go to www.window.state.TX.us/up/ and then do a search by typing in your name and city.

Bill my husband was playing around and came across this site on the Internet, which is a government site on unclaimed money that is just sitting there. He types in every name he has ever used, and every city he has ever lived in and NOTHING! Bummer, so then he decides to check mine and walla there were three different places that had MY MONEY! The oldest one went back to 2004. Whats string to believe is the government site is a piece of cake to navigate! Go figure, but it really is, it even pulls up a preprinted form and all you have to do is type in your name and contact information, download, print and mail it. You can change the name or city with two click of your mouse. It was only about a week that my three checks came in the mail. Our government created something simple to use...amazing.

Then I had a brainstorm...what a great way to have another contact with my past clients and SOI! Everybody likes FREE MONEY, talk about remembering me when they need to buy, sell a home or have a referral for me. So I went into my trusty Database...remember the challenge in Active Rains recent contest ? Everyone did get a Database going, or revamp the one you had, right? Just in case your still working on it, here is my entry on how to set up and maintain a Database, active rain's contest makeover2takeover, is a database an important part of Real Estate? and the link to the complete entry is, http://www.hismove.com/week_1.doc. I sent our an e-mail to my 3,000 person Database to let them know about it. So far I've not heard back from anyone that found a ton of money, but even if they don't, it was something of value that they will remember me for.

In my e-mail to my past clients and SOI I told them were to go, and exactly what to do, how simple it was, and listed the three places I received money from. I received $789.00 for a refund due from an insurance co. on one of my rent houses going back to 2006. Another $335.92 was from Reliant Energy, a refund of overpayment on a bill for my company, also in 2006. The last one was a utility deposit from way back in 2004. It was the smallest amount, only $5.19. I'll take it ! So my grand total again was $1,130, with a couple of clicks of my mouse. Sure bets the odds in Vegas.

So my friends go to www.window.state.TX.us/up/ and put in every name you have ever used and every cityyou have ever lived in and see how much LOST RICHES are just sitting there waiting for you to claim. Don't forget where you got the tip, and please come back and let me know how much you found. My finders fee is 25%, or at least an ice cream cone. Hopefully I will be hearing from lots of past clients in Katy, TX and from my Active Rain friends too. Good luck!

Katy Texas...Cinco Ranch Ladies Club kicks off it's season

The Cinco Ranch Ladies Club recently held it's July meeting with learning to "Zumba" dance. Taught by Judith Vidas our resident dance instructor and Membership Chairperson for the 2008-2009 season. It was a nice turnout since our regular programs do not start until August 26th, which is Rush Night. That begins our official year. Meeting are help the last Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM at the Golf Club at Cinco Ranch located at the corner of Peek & Cinco Ranch Blvd.

The Cinco Ranch Ladies Club is one of the great things about buying a home in Cinco Ranch. If you are from the area or transferring in from around the world, it's the perfect place to make new friends and form instant support groups. There are groups and activities for all age ranges and interest, from Children's Play Groups to Poker. We also host several social activities during the year that include spouses. You can wear whatever you are comfortable in, from shorts to coming straight from work. The dues are only $25 a month, and we have a different speaker, or event for each month of the year. Two "Giving Back" Opportunities:

Second is the "Backpacks For Kids" drive, coordinated by the YMCA to benefit underprivileged children in our own community. Your Real Estate Home Shopping Survival Kit

In preparation for your arrival we wanted to let you know a few things that will make your First Home shopping easier, fun, rewarding and a magical experience for you both. Part of Team Tex-La's job as your Realtor is to take as much stress out of the home buyer experience as possible. While we do this every day, we fully understand that you do not...so we wanted you to know we will provide the following "Survival Kit" in our car for you. We will make sure there is plenty of everything and two of each item that pertain to the homes;

•1. Clipboards

•2. MLS print outs of each home we are going to see

•3. A home evaluation forms for each home we are going to see

Note; our advice is not to bring these into the homes with you. The reason is simple, we want you to "experience" the home, envision your things in each home, where will the big screen TV go? If you are busy writing you might overlook or be distracted by something of importance. Plus buying a home is an emotional experience, so we want you to "Feel" the home as if it were yours. You will have plenty of time in-between viewing the homes to do your "homework".

•4. A cooler with plenty of water, soda, and gatorade

•5. Cozies' for your drinks

•6. Fruit and Protein bars...we need to keep up our energy J

•7. A special gift bag with a hemp hand towel, sun block, lavender oil (this helps with headaches), a notepad and pen, sample bottles of Advil and Tylenol.

•8. Digital camera...we are going to provide you with your own personal web site so you can view the pictures of the homes we have toured at your leisure that evening. You will also be able to e-mail pictures of your top choices to friends, and family member if you would like their advice or just to share. You will also have them as your permanent memory book also.

•10. Bags of M&M'S...you might think, "Oh that's sweet another treat"...NO, it's much more than that. In fact this might be the most important part of your home viewing survival kit! As we mentioned we do this every day and have years of experience. After you select a home you might experience what we refer to as "Buyer's Remorse". This is a normal human emotion, "Oh my gosh did we do the right thing?" Our prescription...take 1-10 M&M's , get a good night's sleep and rest assured we are helping make sure you did! You will feel better in the morning.

Please note; wear comfortable clothes and shoes, don't worry about fashion, this is YOUR experience and we want it to be a pleasant one. Looking at a lot of homes is hard work, and we will be doing a lot of walking and it is HOT this time of year in LA. Eat a healthy carb rich breakfast, you will need energy. As your professional Realtors we have previewed all the homes in the four neighborhoods and selected the "Cream of the Crop" for you to see, however since your time is limited we have to fit viewing 20 of the best homes into one day, that's going to be exciting and exhausting for you. Our goal again is to make it as pleasurable as possible for you.

Team Tex-La...stepped up to week 4 challenge and WON! But alas not for long

Below is our entry from our winning week, be sure to check out Makeover2Takeover, the final winner will be announced in the next few days. So go by and cheer the final three survivors on to victory!

Maybe it was the renewed commitment to produce our very best effort, maybe it was our affirming that we would win Active Rain's makeover 2 takeover's challenge in week 4...Maybe it was a combination! We did it, and it is way more fun to win! We lasted one more week, and were eliminated after week six. It all started with 16 teams, and after week six it was down to six teams. They are in week eight now with three teams competing for first place. Kim Woods & Missy Caulk, Brian Block & Desiree Daniels, and Jeanette Neerpat & Midori Miller. Good luck everyone, it was a fun ride, and I truly enjoyed competing with each of you.

Work harder, be more creative and an attitude of winning was mine and Superstar Josh's mindset going into week 4...We Did It, with a combination of both. The challenge was we had a first time VA home buyer coming to town. We had to take them through the complete home buying process, remove the mystery, questions and uncertainties. They would be here in one month and had to buy in one weekend (Don't you wish they were all like that :). We were to be thorough and detailed but not to the point of being them to tears. Not an easy task, but this was one of the most fun of the challenges. I think a lot of us have a soft spot in our heart for the first time home buyer.

Unfortunately Team Tex-La was eliminated from Active Rains contest, Makeover2Takeover at the end of week six. Rich Jacobson came up with the brilliant idea and challenges which I truly enjoyed being a part of with my apprentice Josh Lazaro. Being the mentor part of our team, I also learned a lot, and had fun too. The contest started with 16 teams, and after our elimination it was down to only 6 teams and now it is down to the last three teams remaining. The winner should be announced any day now. All of the participants are a very talented group of Realtors & bloggers here on the rain, so if you have not been following it I encourage you to check it out. It will soon be over however all the hard work and great ideas to build your real estate business that was done is still there for you to take advantage of. The very first challenge Rich came up with was to teach your apprentice how to build a data base, pick a program to use for it, and the reasons why having a data base is so important. Josh did not have one at all, but he does now, and is in the process of building it up. There was a ton of valuable information that came from the teams participating, so check out some of them if you don't have a data base or need to revamp and clean up the one you have. I use Top Producer as my soft ware and have around 3,000 contact in my data base.

Once you have a clean, up to date data base it's important to maintain it. One of the main reasons to have one is to stay in touch with your SOI (sphere) of influence), current and past clients to generate referrals. There are many ways to do this, and below is an ideal I just used to send our an e-mail to my whole data base, and thought you might find it helpful. You should call your entire data base at least once a quarter, mail something of value once a quarter, and send occasional e-mails of interest, (this is just the basics you must do contact wise ).

I thought this idea was partially good since it brought them to your office, so they remembered were you are, and it was a good cause too. I had ran across the article and implemented it as one of our e-mail contacts. Below is a copy of the actual newsletter that was sent out. So far we have a box full of old cell phone and accessories to donate to the Good Deed Foundation.

Now that you have your data base in place remember it does you no good unless you work it. So good luck and hope you might be able to use this to help stay in touch with your SOI and past clients. Below is the wording that I used on my e-mail letter that was sent out. Top Producer automatically inserts the fist names of each contact for you.

Liz Carter & Team Realty is proud and excited to share with you information about our newest charity. We are working with the Good Deed Foundation(www.gooddeedfoundation.org/aarp) in recycling your old cell phones for a great cause.

Americans upgrade their cell phones about once a year, rendering approximately 11.6 million phones useless each month, though most of them actually still work. If recycled, these phones could generate millions of dollars to help women and families in need, as well as saving 66 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO₂) per phone.

About 60% of cell phones recycled can be refurbished and resold. These phones generate the greatest funds for charity. Of the remaining cell phones, a percentage will be reprogrammed to dial 911 and donated to domestic violence survivors, senior citizens and others at risk. The rest are returned to the materials stream. All recycling through this program is completed in the US, according to EPA standards. Funds raised go to Women's Funding Network Foundation, which helps to lift women and families out of poverty.

Some phones will be sold, with the proceeds going to programs that help women and children escape poverty or to support climate-change initiatives. Some will go to older adults so they can make 911 calls. "People can make a huge difference through this program just by giving away something they're no longer using," says Calandra Cruickshank, executive vice president of the Good Deed Foundation in Phoenicia, N.Y., which is cosponsoring the effort with the Environmental Media Association.

Proud to be an American

July 4th, or Independence Day is the only holiday we have that celebrates the United States of America. It's kinda like Christmas in that sometimes we get so caught up in the activities associated with the day, we forget what we are celebrating. While the fireworks, family picnics, parades, fun and food are special it's nice to take some time to reflect on this day and what it means to be an American...FREEDOM, is my first thought. Thomas Jefferson in his famous preamble to the Declaration of Independence said,

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness".

WOW, now that's pretty cool! So on this 4th of July I will make sure to include that in our day, along with the fireworks and BBQ of course. When I travel out of country, which I have done extensively in pursuit of my passion for scuba diving, I always feel so glad to be home. To be back in the US and grateful for all we have, and thankful for the sacrifices that have been made over the years since 1776. Especially when you travel to the more remote, third world countries and come home to American it really hits you. We have so much to be grateful and thankful for. Yes, there are things that don't work right and could be better, honestly through this is the best it is anywhere in the world. The greatest country in the world, the United States of America, my home.

Independence Day commentates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, declaring our independence from Britain, and that our thirteen American Colonies were no longer a part of the British Empire. The Second Continental Congress met on July 4th, 1776, however the original document from that day was lost and it wasn't until August 2nd that the document we now have was actually signed by John Hancock and the other delegates. The wording was approved on July 4th, however the famous handwritten version was created after July 19th, and was signed by most delegates on August 2nd, 1776.

One other little bit of American trivia was that in a remarkable series of coincidences both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson two of our founding fathers and the only two men who signed the Declaration of Independence that went on to become presidents of the United States, they also both died on the same day, July 4th 1826, our 50th anniversary. So now you have a little bit of history (in case you had forgotten part of your history lessons :) to talk about today during the festivities.

I also found this video of Elvis singing America to help you get in the mood. So turn up your volume and get out the Kleenex (I always need it for this one, and our National Anthem, yes I'm sentimental and very Proud to be an American). Hope you enjoy this and your July 4th celebrating our country, the most marvelous country in the world. God bless America and praying for all our troops to be home soon.

There is so much to see other than the beautiful homes, that I will usually spend a couple of hours showing buyers, and folks relocating to the Katy, TX area all the amenities of Cinco Ranch before we ever look at a home to buy!
