Historic Rugby Readies for 39th Annual Pilgrimage - September 1st

Historic Rugby's Annual Pilgrimage will be held this year on Saturday, September 1, 2007. Over 25 antique-filled buildings will be open and the festivities are from 10:00am - 6:00pm eastern time.

As the largest such tour in Tennessee, the tour will include private historic homes, historic lodging facilities, museum buildings and the Rugby Visitor Center and Johnson Theatre.

The private historic homes will be open from 12:00pm - 6:00pm and will include Virgo House, Oak Lodge, Wren's Nest and The Lindens.

The museum buildings will be open from 10-6. The visitor center will provide music on the porch by musicians Tom Morgan and Lynn Haasplaying British and Appalachian ballads.

United States Chess Federation - Crossville, Tennessee

You may not know it but the United States Chess Federation is located in beautiful Crossville, TN on the Cumberland Plateau. With over 80,000 members it's the official membership organization for chess players.

The USCF is a not-for-profit which was created to increase the knowledge and enjoyment of chess. Since the USCF represents the United States in International Chess Federations, it's members can compete in sanctioned chess tournaments all around the world.

The federation publishes two magazines, Chess Life and Chess Life 4 Kids.

Crab Orchard Stone - Cumberland County, TN

Crab Orchard Stone is a rare sandstone that is quarried from the Crab Orchard Mountain of the Cumberland Plateau.

This beautiful stone is mottled and streaked with a beautiful rose color and shades of brown. This stone was used mostly for chimneys and foundations in the region until the late nineteenth century when the local officials used it for stone curbing and sidewalks and a Courthouse.

This stone has been used all over the country including the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. When you visit Crossville and Cumberland County make sure you look for some of the beautiful buildings made from this distinctive stone.

Lake Tansi Community Association to Meet

The Lake Tansi Community Association will meet on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 6:00pm at the Thunderbird Recreation Center. All of the members get together with everyone bringing a covered dish to share.

The monthly meeting features a guest speaker and this month Kristin Rosecrant of Rosecrant's Recycling will present the program.

The theme for this month's meeting will be "School Days". Many of the student's at Brown Elementary School are in need of school supplies. It is suggested that everyone bring some school supplies to decorate their table and then we will donate this items to the school.

127 Corridor Sale Continues in Crossville

Well, Reid and I went out this afternoon to see if we could find some great bargains at the 127 Sale. We traveled from Crossville, down the mountain, and throught Pikeville in Bledsoe County. We went all the way to Dunlap, TN.

Downtown Dunlap was really hopping with lots of vendors and it seemed like lot of buyers too. On our way back we stopped at the Rock House Restaurant just outside Pikeville. They were open on Saturday because of the sale and we had a great early dinner. Lots of antiques and old toys to look at while you are waiting for your food.

The weather was sunny but really, really hot. I have to admit that I spent more time inside the truck with the AC running than checking out the bargains, but of course Reid like to look at att all that guy stuff! I came home empty handed...maybe next year.

Rural Health Clinic Opens in Pleasant Hill, TN

Early on July 14, 2007 the ribbon was cut on the new Rural Health Clinic in Pleasant Hill. On hand for the event were Congressman Lincoln Davis, Cumberland County Mayor Brock Hill and Pleasant Hill Mayor Jim Olds. A breakfast was served and music was heard.

The clinic is staffed by Dr. Harold Lowe and has actually been open for over a month. The patients come 4 days a week, for 4 hours a day and either mornings or afternoons. Patients have to call for appointments as this is not a walk-in clinic.

23rd Annual Pioneer Day on the Mountain in Cumberland County

Pioneer Day on the Mountain in Cumberland County is the longest running festival in the County. The goal of this festival is to showcase our local craftsman, artists, and seniors. These wonderful people will share with the community their knowledge of traditional arts and crafts of yesteryear.

Also included is a MusicFest Competition. Local talent is encouraged to come and perform and maybe launch your new music career. There will be prizes and trophiesin many categories including, Bluegrass, Gospel and Country.

Dancing competition will be held for Clogging and Buck Dancing. Come on down and strut your stuff!

Everyone is encouraged to attend this wonderful annual event for a day of music, crafts and food. See you there.
