Lakewood - The most charming neighborhood in Dallas

Lakewood is still to this day one of the treasures of the intown neighborhoods in Dallas. In the 1920's and 1930's, Lakewood was the most exclusive area in the city. Dallas' business elite built homes in Lakewood and made it "the" place to live.

There is a strong architectural history in Lakewood which has some of the finest examples of French Eclectic English Tudor, Colonial Revival and Spanish Eclectic. Albert Dines and Lee Kraft (Dines & Kraft) were major developers of the area. They built many landmark homes in the Country Club Estates area of the neighborhood. The premier architects were Cliff Hutsell , Charles Dilbeck and Anton Korn to name a few.

People are drawn to the wide lawns, deep lots, wooded hills and the superior location close to White Rock Lake. The lake offers a dog park, biking and jogging trails, sailing and perfect spots for a weekend picnic. There are many festivals and events that occur at the lake year round.

The Lakewood Shopping Center is the hub of neighborhood social activity. The historic Lakewood Theater still hosts special events, the Balcony Club offers swinging jazz and Matt's dishes up some of the best Mexican food around with a great outdoor dining area. The Lakewood Country Club offers members

There are terrific education options for those who live in Lakewood. Lakewood Elementary is a top notch public school. There are also several very strong private schools in the area: St. Thomas Catholic School, Lakehill & St. Johns.

Idylwood Hill- Hidden Estate in the heart of Dallas

This house was conceived to be a house on a hill on a unique site in Dallas executed in the Edwardian Style. A private and tranquil property in the heart of the ultra exclusive Old Preston Hollow estate area with 5.3 acres of exquisite trees and picturesque views of Bachman Creek was the perfect spot for this landmark home.

As I began to do research I discovered that Edwardianism was not so much a style as a historical time period and a way of life. The period relates to the time just after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, ascension to the throne of Edward VII, and his subsequent death in 1910 (though the period could be said to have lasted until 1939). It was a time of great wealth in England, a care free life style, and the construction of some of the great English country houses. Stylistically houses were quite eclectic and drew inspiration from many types of architecture from England's past.

Sir Edwin Lutyens, a great designer of country houses during this time employed a "butterfly plan" with spreading wings to capture the sun in a gloomy climate. .The angled entrance of this house, inspired by this concept, is intended to act as a welcoming façade set up on the hill. A rather eclectic French turret completes the composition giving it visual weight and a sense of verticality. The rest of the exterior is designed to capture specific views on the 5.3 acre site and to create the numerous axial alignments employed in the floor plan. Coursed rough-back Leuters limestone was employed to give the exterior skin of the house an aged look.

Once inside a central gallery spine unifies all the spaces on the first floor. One end of it terminates in a circular vestibule that acts as a "hinge point" and aids in dealing with the thirty degree angle produced by the façade. The opposite end of the gallery terminates in the bay window at the end of the mahogany paneled library. A formal salon opens off the central gallery and extends views to the rear garden of the house. The great room is given somewhat modest dimensions and utilizes an unusual curved coffered ceiling rather than the more stereotypical "hammer beam" wood trusses. As in a typical English country house of this time many of the rooms are treated thematically differently some with a good-natured spirit of fun such as the Art Deco movie theater in the basement. There are two secret passageways leading to the basement from different rooms. The house was begun in 1996 and completed in 1998.

Talk about a team not giving up and pushing to the end. After 5 interceptions and 1 fumble from Tony Romo, the Dallas Cowboys still won.

That is a game that people will talk about for a long time.

What were your thoughts on this game? The onside kick with Dallas recovering, Tony's 5 interceptions, the Bills coach calling time out with two seconds to go and Folk (the Cowboys kicker) hitting the distance twice!

Were you one of the ones who turned the TV off thinking the game was over with 3 minutes to go?

Everyone knows that a trip to the Fair is not complete until you have had a golden fried dog on a stick. The proper name for this Texas tradition is a CORNY DOG, if you call it by any other name (especially corn dog) than all will know you are a Fletcher newbie. (proper pronunciation is "kawr-nee dawg")

Neil & Carl Fletcher "cooked" up this delectable treat in 1942 and they have been satisfying Texans for the last 65 years. Operating six locations on the fairgrounds, they sell over a 500,000 corny dogs in a little over three weeks!

Over ninety-five percent of the students attend college after graduation.

A Brief History:

In 1843, Dr. John Cole of Virginia acquired 420 acres from the Republic of Texas. This acreage includes the area of what was to become both Highland Park and University Park. In 1851, Dr. Cole's son, Joseph Larkin Cole, inherited this land.

Between 1886 and 1889, Colonel Henry Exall, of Kentucky and Virginia, along with other investors, acquired the Cole property. Colonel Exall constructed a dam on Turtle Creek in 1890, creating Exall Lake, and began laying out the graveled streets. After a financial setback, Colonel Exall farmed and raised trotting horses in this area he called lomo alto (high land.)

John S. Armstrong purchased the land in 1907 and in partnership with his two sons-in-law, Hugh E. Prather, Sr., and Edgar L. Flippen began development of a residential community. They called this new development Highland Park, named because of its higher elevation and because of a plan to reserve 20% of the developed land for parks. In an area bounded by Armstrong, Abbott and Gillon Avenues and Hackberry Creek, the first lots were sold in 1909.

Highland Park and it's sister city University Park are some of the best neighborhoods in Dallas. They offer a small town, friendly feel but with a luxurious big city twist!

Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) Late Nights are one of the most popular monthly events in Dallas. The third Friday of each month you will find the Museum is open until midnight and has a variety of activities focused on current exhibitions. Each Late Night offers visitors performances, concerts, readings, film screenings, tours, family programs and complimentary Starbucks Coffee...truly something for everyone!

With 290 homes, Greenway Parks is a historic and exclusive community with some of Dallas' finest architecture and where many of the city's most prominent families have lived. Greenway Parks also has a rich and prestigious history. In 1925, F.N. Drane acquired the land to establish Greenway Parks.
