Looking for ways to cost moving expenses? I will present some of the easiest ways, but you have to pay attention, and get involved. Renting a moving truck and doing it yourself. Yes, I am talking about the entire move. The thing that you equate with a visit to the dentist-----MOVING! Moving can be stressful, and can take a toll on your body for days after the move, even if you never lift a piece of furniture. The whole process of organizing, coordinating, and scheduling the procedure can be grueling. Many people choose to recruit family and friends for the move, in an attempt to save some cash, and defray moving cost. Ironically, it seems that everyone mysteriously has something to do when it's time to move, now that you have a fully furnished home. Or, your last experience didn't go as planned, when you mixed beer, friends, and
your furniture. Huge gashes in your walls, furniture, and floors, attest to their neglect. O.K. you don't want to go that route again, but you are interested in moving on a shoestring budget. One the most common ways to defray the cost is to rent your own moving truck and hire professional movers to perform the labor. You will discover that some (not all moving companies) will jump at this offer because their trucks are not involved, thus they save on gas and travel expenses.

Should you use a POD, PACKRAT, or a traditional storage facility, when moving in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel-Hill area? Since I have experience with both I can say that both have advantages. I will address Portable-On-Demand-Storage Units, PackRats, and other mobile storage solutions. These units are much different than a stationary storage unit because you have options. When moving in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel-Hill area you can move at your on pace when loading the units because they are conviently parked outside your residence. Therefore you are not making trips back and forth to the storage unit, burning gas and time. With PODS, you simply load/unload as much as you want and proceed the next day. Another advantage of having a POD when moving in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel-Hill area is that when it is time to move the items you can have them move the whole unit to the next location, or have them store it at their facility.

Pods work great for people that are putting their homes on the market and want to de-clutter and stage their homes. This way the furniture is still available close by, and they can present a better image of their home. The units are easy to load, and you can stuff them to the max. Traditional storage units (the stationary ones) are good for long term storage, and may be less expensive than long term PODS storages. Although, not that expensive when you calculate the time, and truck rental fees, when it's time to transport the items. I've seen many traditonal storage units now carrying PODS, PACKRATS, and other mobile storage solutions, in an attempt to read the writing on the wall.

Some moving companies are now carrying them as well, although reluctantly. When relocating in the NC Raleigh Durham-Chapel-Hill area, I would recommend renting a PODS, PACKRATS, storage unit. A special side note to moving in the Triangle NC area you can also arrange to have a moving labor service provider load and unload the units, and cut moving time and expenses in half. This is another great benefit of using a MOBILE STORAGE UNIT because with traditional moving companies you are going to pay exorbitant fees for moving and delivery. Travel fees, surcharges, and other hidden fees.

I find it very interesting that people who work/own a Penske or Budget dealership are so quick to criticize Uhaul, unfortunately we at Uhaul hear the same complaints that you hear on a daily basis, there is no substitute for Uhaul! Neither Budget nor Penske can handle the volume that Uhaul handles and that is a proven fact, uhaul houses over 14,000 dealers and centers that stretch cross country and beyond. For all of the people that have had poor and unsettling experiences with Uhaul, I understand your frustration and anger however if you believe that the same problems you had would not have happened with other moving equipment and full service companys than think again, every business will please the majority of they're customers but no matter how hard you try you will always frustrate somebody due to typical company policies.

Under the Uhaul reservation policies that this site writes it states that all reservations require a $100 credit card deposit, this is untrue, there is nothing charged to the credit card until the pick up day. At that point you may choose to use a credit card or pay cash, the whole purpose of the credit card is to show intent. A lot of frustration that comes my way, would be easier to release if customers would not come in assuming that they were about to get the shaft, people in customer service fields no that the attitude that they give is a direct response to the attitude that they were given. I will go out of my way to help a customer out, unless they come in my door with a rude and disrespectful attitude, than they will get very little or no help from me. Uh....mr. uhaul guy.....you need to wake up. Let's just say I'm a Penske supporter and the company is 100% customer focused and driven. Reservations are not overbooked and the customers are not left helpless. Customers are not told where and when they can pick up a truck (Uhaul oftens doesn't even get a truck for the customer). The truck is guaranteed.........not the reservation. Folks, please read the prior sentence 5 times to let it sink in. To guarantee a reservation means that you're guaranteed to have a reservation. To guarantee a truck is precisely what you're looking for and Penske will provide for you.

Also, nice philosophy on customer service. If a customer comes in unhappy, you don't treat them bad.........always always you treat them with respect. Wow. The Uhaul school of customer service is weak....is it a 5 minute session? 2 philosophy's? Screw the customer and take what money you can from them? Huh. Have you ever researched the court proceedings Uhaul is involved with? Check them out. Take a look at the basis for the lawsuits and bankruptcy.

I understand not every person every time can be pleased, but Penske drives for every person every time. For every 100 Uhaul complaints, there is roughly 1 Penske complaint. Calculate that.

Oh....by the way. Of the 90,000 pieces of equipment Uhaul possesses, how many of them are actually road ready?

Rent with Penske, they will do everything they can to make your move as safe and seamless as possible.

I received this email today and thought I would post it up here. There are better alternatives out there, people.

Troy, I was told about this site by a customer looking to rent a truck. Your site is doing what you intended. I own a small tool and party rental company in Carlisle PA. We are also a dealer for Budget Trucks formally known as Ryder TRS. I have been renting trucks for the past 25 years and am overwhelmed by the stories at your site. Sure, things happen occasionally, a customer doesn't return the truck on time, or maybe the very occasional break down. However, in 25 years we have had possibly 10 customers without a truck at the scheduled time. That doesn't mean they never got a truck or that they were sent to an alternate location. While it is Budget's position to book almost all 1-way rentals, they also employ a staff of inventory managers that move the trucks, not the customers to the pick up location.

I would hope that you might list this letter and or Budget trucks in your alternatives. Budget trucks typically cost a little more, but the extra expense is a welcome exchange for the customer service that you would receive at the more than 4000 independent businesses that rent Budget Trucks. We are proud of the ability we have to rent Budget Trucks at a fair price and an even greater value.

However, there is one more step you must prepare for and that is moving. We all understand how stressful moving can be. Especially during unexpected cicumstances. There are so many questions, it almost feels like there is not enough time in the day to figure out what to do first. Here are some tips:

1) Decide what kind of service you want. For example:

a) Are you going to do the packing of your boxes? Or are you going to have the moving company do it for you?

b) Do you want to pack some of the boxes and let the moving company pack the rest?

c) Are you going to move all your boxes and leave only the furnitre for the moving company?

What ever you decide keep in mind that good moving companies will be able to provide you with multiple options. They should be able to meet your needs at any given point in time. 2) Get an estimate.

Now that you think you have got the kind of service figured out make sure you get an estimate. You want to have your costs in writing. I always recommend that you get at least three estimates, this allows you to see the fluctuation in prices and the professionalism of the company. Typically you will have a company that is the most expensive, a company that is in the middle and a company that is the cheapest. Remember moving is a service industry and you really do get what you pay for. Sometimes the cheapest is not the best and sometimes the most expensive is not the best. Ultimately, first impressions are the best way to go, and like I always say go with your gut.

3) Schedule your move as soon as possible.

Waiting until the last minute is an additional stress you do not need. Try to book your move immediately once you have decided on a mover. I recommend that you schedule your move at least 2 weeks in advance. Of course, I know that this is not always possible. That’s why at Furniture Cab you can always count on us. 4) Decide on what kind of Liability Coverage you want.

a) Basic Valuation Coverage. (Typically covered at $0.60 per pound per article.)

b) Full Valuation Coverage. (Full repair or replacement of goods. This will cost you more.)

Do not ever let a mover tell you that they are not responsible for damages. A mover is ALWAYS responsible for any type of damage that occurs while you are using their services. The real question is, How much are they responsible for?

If you decide to go with the Basic Valuation Coverage keep in mind that this is the most economical plan as far as cost goes. This is because it is FREE. However, because it is free it has major limitations. This free coverage is only designed to help cover the cost of repairs not to replace items. For example, if you have a dresser that weighs 100 lbs. and a leg gets broken a movers maximum liablity will be 100 lbs. x $0.60 which would result in a check to you in the amount of $60.00. The repair may cost you $125.00 but $60.00 is all you get, the balance of the cost you must absorb. I know it does not sound like much but keep in mind that you did not pay for any coverage.

If you decided to go with the Full Valuation Protection than your same dresser will get repaired by the moving company. If it is not repairable than it will be replaced. There is a catch to this. Per North Carolina Rules and Regulations a mover must only replace an item with another item of the same like, kind and or quality. In other words, If you purchased a 50″ Sony Plasma HD TV for $3000.00 the company is not responsible for $3000.00. Instead if the mover can price out a 50″ Magnavox with all the same gidgets and gadgets as the Sony for $900.00 that will be all they are responsible for.

5) Sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

I know this sounds funny but it is true. Most people make the moving experience stressfull by trying to do the work themselves. In otherwords, they are running around trying to tell the movers what to do and how to do it. This also is because the customer does not feel comfortable with the movers. Try not to put yourself in this position. If you have chosen a good company you should be able to do a walk through when the men arrive and than relax and let them do their job. Good moving companies will not need your help until they arrive at the delivery address. Once you get there all you should have to do is show the men where you want specific items and let them do the rest. I constantly work with my men to teach them new tricks to get things done, I also work with them on how to make the customer feel relaxed and relieved so that they can get straight to work. Ultimately, our goal is to turn a stressful situation into a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Even when it has been a long day we still try to make it as fun as possible.
