Google malfunction today could be pricey!

Shocked by Google find?

Google was showing a warning message for all searched sites for 15 mins - hour.

"Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer"

Visit Monitter.com and type in that message, and you'll see just how active the Twitter microblogosphere was regarding this bizarre find.

A few independent webpages state that Google makes $28-33K a minute from US business advertisers (via AdWords program). That's quite the cashcow! Things seem to be smoothly running again, although suggestions have been made to check 'spam' folder if you use Gmail as some items may have erroneously been dumped.

The issue was apparently on Google's malware detector (separate entity that dectects viruses, phishers, et cetera).

Don't be IMPAIRED by imperfect PEAR-INGS!

I was over at my family's home, and my stepfather was running to the grocery store and asked if I wanted anything. I thought that making a lunch with light feta cheese, 2 bartlett pairs and spot of honey would be divine. So, listing light feta and the 2 bartletts (honey in house), he went on his way. He started feeling ill from a new medicine he is taking, so he shortened his trip at the store. I got the pear pair, but no feta! Well, now this couture lunch had become cockamamy. I decided to see what cheese was in the fridge. My mother had bags with crude names like "Taco Cheese," and "Mexican Cheese." Perfect for an easy addition to fajitas, but not a good match for my pear. Then I found a bag of shredded aged parmesan. Oui oui! It wasn't the norm, but why not try heating some parmesan over the well-chopped pear? What a delightful surprise! Yes, I'd still prefer the feta, but the parmesan added a different kick and was really enjoyable. I'd make it again!

What does this have to do with anything, you ask? Sometimes we clamor for the perfect accompaniment. In business, perhaps you think, "If I could add this person to my team, sales would soar," or "Getting XYZ Brand to Co-sponsor my fundraiser would add the right level of cache to escalate how consumers' view our company." With community it may read, "Sara knows so many people in our area, she would be so influential of ABC Charity's board of directors," or "Mitch is so handsome and charismatic, if we could convince him to speak at our fundraiser meeting, I know more people would be on board." With family our thoughts may say, "I know Angie wants to study violin but her chances for getting a scholarship are better if she sticks with volleyball," or "My husband has lost his mind! Why does he think it's a good idea to invite those neighbors over for dinner? Do you know what Mrs. Cravitz said she saw them doing last week?"

Does it sound silly or ring true? Come on, at some point or another you fancied something as one way and it turned out completely different. My pastor has shared stories about applying for law school but changing his mind and pursuing further education to go into ministry. The skill set he he saw fit for persuading jurors, is now used to disciple. What if that top candidate doesn't accept the job offer? Maybe your B-pick has two years less experience but desires to prove themselves capable and thus excels.

Sound like apples to oranges? Nah. There's relevance. We all envision something as "just right" and sometimes it just doesn't happen. Maybe your date cancelled last minute but while you were at home, you get a phone call from the person who later is your spouse. What if so-and-so couldn't care less about your fundraiser but you learn that your co-chairs' aunt is a local reporter and would love to help. Perhaps your daughter does insist on taking violin, and later a college review board finds her to be the kind of well-rounded student they need and offer her a merit scholarship. Things don't always happen as our "perfect pairing," but turn out to be just right. Is there something you had your sights on that turned out differently? Put aside your initial disappointment and consider the possibilities.

Well fellow Rainers, it's been way too long since I've been on! Missing my AR family right about now. Here's the latest on what's been up.

Moved from Baltimore --although staging biz had picked up, finding FT employment was taking a long time, and bills need to be paid, right?

Back in hometown, Columbia, SC --home sweet home or sort of; I love Columbia, but it's not exactly a "thriving" metropolis

Backstory -- four years prior I had some success meeting with publishers/agents/et cetera regarding my writing (the more serious, nonblog stuff LOL); didn't pursue because honestly I got the shakes and wasn't sure it was the right time...a stint of steady corporate employment keep me paid but far from my writing roots

Now -- after some thought and prayer, the vision is beginning to materialize and I think it's time I put aside my marketing/graphic design/corporate bag (exclusively) and get back on the literary track

Plans -- attending a writing conference end of October and preparing material now; if all goes well, I'll be relocating (back) to the city where my novel takes place: LA

How this relates to AR -- LA is a pricey town and I'll need a solid PT to make this dream a reality. Any takers? If you know of anything, I'll send you a link to my portfolio site. I've got a BA, 5 years experience and do a heck of a lot -- from graphic design to technical writing to corporate communications to mixing paint at your local hardware store to waiting tables. Serious. Let the bidding begin.

Got Tips? Help Me Host a Yard Sale!

Okay Stagers and other Savvy Rainers, I need your help! I'm holding a YARD SALE for my mother and need some advice.

First, the yard sale won't be at her house (she just had 45K in landscaping and bargain hunters traipsing through wouldn't be great---plus, it's super private and hard to find). The only feasible spot is at a house in the neighborhood my mother owns but is rented by friends. It's on a main street in the neighborhood, easy to find, but is up small hill/slope. Will this be a deterrant?

Second, what are the best ways to advertise? Columbia, SC doesn't have a happenin' Craigslist community unfortunately (although I will try). It's cheap to run an ad on the local rag's website, so I'll do that as well. Place flyers around the neighborhood, et cetera. Any interesting promo ideas?

Turning Up the Charm: Simple Guest Bedroom Makeover

I wanted to post something for Easter, yet when I looked for free clip art, I was disappointed with what I found. Well, I decided to make my own and share with ya'll! These graphics have ALL been made by me and I give my permission for them to be used and shared as you wish. -A link back or reference is nice, but not needed-I have set them at a high resolution based on what is allowable. I'd offer to send originals to anyone who needs them, but I'm going to the beach with my family and will have spotty internet so no guarantees! Time for a Remix

This week, I will not be following my usual blog format. Too much going on to think seriously! I'll hop back on the bandwagon next week, hopefully.

For now, I'd like to share with you a simple remix. Ever go on a job interview and get that HR folder about the company? Sure, you have! What do you do if you don't get the job? Such was the case with me recently. I applied for a spectacular communications position at in my specialty A/E/C industry (architecture, engineering, construction) and was ready for the second interview with the VPs of the firm.

Not so fast! Phone call at the end of the next week (after a call and email follow-up from me) and it looks like there won't be a second interview or job in my future! As much as I'd like to kick a stray cat (only kidding), I'm glad they've found a candidate they feel best meets their needs. I know one thing - the person they did hire may look good on paper, but I am more creative. Hands down. How do I know? Well, you've just got to be creative like me to know these kinds of things.

But alas, there is that lonely promotional HR folder. Should I chuck it? NO! I need a folder for some stuff. But it's got all that ~~propaganda~~ promotional logo stuff on it....have no fear, FOLDER STAGER SHALL APPEAR!

Here's how to perk up that portfolio:

First we start with the No-Fundler (that's No Fun Folder for those of you low on coffee).
Now we must mask the corporate imagery and all related logo paraphernalia, et cetera.
Find something fun from a magazine in the same vein in regards to color, lines and look. Take your image and glue stick it on.

Use stickers and painter's tape like me, or something better if you have it. The goal is to use household items, accessories and other various treasures versus actually spending money. (You could of course buy your very own folder versus customizing this one, after all)

Make sure you don't forget the interiors and back. You're the logo, not the company.
Now place your folder in a place of
prominence. Or simply hide it behind these flowers, like I did. There. All better now.

If you don't live in Baltimore's Charles Village, you may be missing out on some great eats.

City Paper just released a dining guide yesterday, so I suggest you grab a copy of the free paper (located on just about every Baltimore block it seems) before the week is out.

This establishment really needs no introduction, as it's got Zagat raters and a slew of local press drooling already. This namesake (literally) Thai eatery is really in the Waverly neighborhood if you ask me, but it was featured in the dining guides Charles Village listing, so it's getting dropped in this review! (Although their online review says it's in Waverly...but I'll just chalk it up to the fact Baltimore has such a multitude neighborhoods). Yummy curry, relaxing jasmine tea, chicken satay, all served up in a bright space with just as much Thai art as reviews and awards adorning the walls. Impeccable service and food make this a save staple for your dining-out arsenal.

Well, this would have gotten a gold star but the last time I dined there I had an unpleasant experience. Typically a good time, their staple is flavorful pizzas like the BBQ Chicken or Chicken, Corn and Apple. The reason this is getting a bad mark is because when a girlfriend and I went last, there was a hair embedded in a slice. These things happen, so I wasn't ready to write them off just yet (although my appetite disappeared). I alerted our server who instead of apologizing proceeded to tell us how no one in the kitchen had that color hair and how it just wasn't possible! Sure, my girlfriend and I both have black hair, but the texture of this hair was scruffy and it was UNDER the layer of cheese. Plus, the guy brought us our food had a long, unruly scruffy black beard! The server took a measly $5 off our ticket and continued to tell us how it just wasn't possible. They do have live music most nights and a full bar (if that's your bag), so maybe if you're not eating, you'll have a better time. Note to Joes2: Customer service is as imperative as taste.

Truly a fun place to be, with walls and ceilings adorned with toys and comic heroes. Diverse menu includes breakfast, sandwiches, blue plates and what a staffer called "yummy goodness" - a to-die-for dessert menu. Everything I've sampled receives the Staging Girl seal of approval. Best thing about Paper Moon is it's 24 hour status. Real food, all the time.

Probably one of the most unique concepts I've seen in a restaurant in all my worldly travels: A 50's style diner with both Americana and Indian fare! I'm a sucker for the turkey Reuben and apple pie. Friends who are Indian (or just Indian food aficionados) echo that the Indian food is milder than most, so if you're looking for the mouth-burn, it may not be for you. Try the onion naan (ask for the 3 dipping sauces) and lamb shahi korma with it's special mild savory sauce.

Monday Morning Marketing Meeting: How Not to Be THAT Guy

You know That Guy (or Gal). They have an ego because at some point they have been successful (perhaps moderately, perhaps significantly). Right now, That Guy is living off his past success...but his marketing is stagnant. So many have the attitude, "Do what you've always done, get what you've always gotten." Well, guess what? If you're lucky, you'll get what you've gotten. The rest of the world is moving forward, and if you're sitting on dated tactics, you will get left behind. "I've been successful with this and even if I don't grow 1% more, it won't matter because I've got income from doing this just as I always have." Again, good luck with that. I don't want to be the one sitting still as the rest of the market moves forward.

Do you realize how little it takes to be better? Sometimes I am amazed at how little people expect. In one job, I earned a $9K raise in 6 months, the next $13K in 2 months. Why? Because I actually WORKED! I didn't just go in and get a paycheck, I actually added revenue. Let's use that second job mentioned as an example.

At the last mentioned job, I was one of the youngest people in the marketing department, one of the newest hires, and the only person who made more than me was the Director of Marketing. I made more than my manager. How could this be?

I knew what I was doing, and if I didn't---I learned quick. I asked experts---and get this: they're in your office too, maybe at the end of the hall. I took people to lunch and did research in my free time.
I had contacts in the industry and in the firm, and the CEO (500+ employees) knew my extension by the end of my first month there. Why? He'd seen the results and knew I could provide what he needed (see 1).
I helped others when it "wasn't in my job description" and the guy who handled supplies and inner office mail delivery got the same friendly greetings and respect as the VP in the corner office.

Okay, those are 3 general freebies (you have to buy the book for the rest!), but I think you're starting to get the picture now.

So there are 2 basic tenets here---Be the best at what you do. If not, get out of the way because the person who really wants it, will take it. Be relevant to your industry and audience.

If you think doing what you've always done is enough, go ahead and get in the back of the line. Constantly change your formula. You can use your trusty tools, but don't leave it at that. Get back to basics, cut the fat, fine. But be willing to LISTEN. I've been hired by firms as a consultant to help them boost their marketing efforts and increase sales. I was seen as the expert---why else would you pay me?---but then NOT LISTENED TO! What is wrong with this picture, people? I'm sorry, I don't want to just take your money. That's really no fun for me. I agreed to help because I believe you have a needed service to provide and a lot of untapped potential. Do not tell me that you have a well-oiled machine with the fact is---you don't. Your thoughts are in the swamp, just sitting there, stewing, not pouring over like a waterfall.

This is 2008, not 1958 (although I'm sure that was a great year...just wasn't here to appreciate it....I know many fine things were around, like this sweet Imperial on the left.)

If you're selling real estate, know your buyer. Postcards and cold calls may work in your area. Others may need to rely heavier on e-resources. In the end, you are in control of your efforts, and who you listen to---hire outside help and rely on the expert or trust your instincts? It's your call.

Times are changing. Are you? Remember: Be the Best and Be Relevant!

A huge component of staging is organization and getting rid of clutter--and I figure, why not apply that to my blog?

I've been blogging for just over a month now and the idea floodgate springs forth! To keep it simple, for myself and readers, I'm going to start a "blog schedule" of posts.

Basically, I've sorted through the types of things I am (or will be) blogging and realized they actually do fall into categories.

So readers, cheer up! Each weekday will now have a theme! (Don't you love a good theme?)

(And don’t get stuck in management…because then you get to tack on an extra two hours! YIKES!) Most meetings lack one basic component: take-away value. Do you leave with something valuable? You say Feng Shui, I say Wabi Sabi!

Feng Shui is getting a lot of fanfare these days, but it’s nothing new. Pronounced “Fung Schway,” (in the Mandarin dialect of Chinese; differs for Cantonese but the characters are the same) it translates as “wind water.” This ancient art is said to bring creativity, prosperity, good health and better relationships, with the correct positioning of objects and furniture.

I can respect the concept and principles, although I am not an advocate for both religious and personal reasons. If you’d like to get some more advice on the subject, Active Rain has many members who are consultants and even a group.

As for me, I can relate far better with the Japanese wabi-sabi. It roughly translates to impermanence and rust, and deals with the beauty in life's limitations. It's organic, irregular and humble.

“Wabi means austerity of design without severity, and sabi refers to an object’s patina, or broken-in quality…wabi sabi reveres objects for their irregularities, simplicity, and lack of pretension.”1

Think of it as trip to an independent art gallery in Austin (wabi sabi) versus a trip to the Louvre in Paris (feng shui). Both are incredible experiences, although very different.

"Pared down to its barest essence, wabi-sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature, of accepting the natural cycle of growth, decay and death. It's simple, slow, and uncluttered--and it reveres authenticity above all. Wabi-sabi is flea markets, not warehouse stores; aged wood, not Pergo; rice paper, not glass. It celebrates cracks and crevices and all the other marks that time, weather, and loving use leave behind."2

To me, it's a graceful elegance that comes effortlessly, put together without pretext, a style versus what's in fashion.

Are You Serious? Bad Online Advice and the Aftermath

If you’re not familiar with Trulia.com, you should be. It’s a great tool for consumers in the real estate market. One of its best features is Trulia Voices, a Q&A forum.

I recently answered a question from a home owner asking about staging for their home. They live in a different state and are not in my "market area," but I believe in sharing advice and no other comments had been posted from an actual stager. The questioner wanted to know about costs and asked for referrals! One answerer was a true gem: they talked about the ROI (Return on Investment) of staging and you can tell this agent has success stories. I won't "crib" any from this gentleman's answer, but it was along the lines of being surprised at the hesitance to use a stager (small investment) when the rewards are so great.

Now on to another reply. This agent suggested buying scratch 'n dent furniture, accessories from a large overstock product store, and flowers from an even larger discount membership club.

I was laughing until I realized this is serious stuff. A consumer is trying to get their home sold and asked for information specifically regarding cost and receiving a local referral. What this answer gave was an attempt at a cost saving alternative.

Stagers, we know that our inventory isn't cheap, nor is our time or talent. Here someone has been advised to purchase furniture which they don't want/need and will presumably have to move to their new home, plus accessories and flowers.

There's nothing wrong with looking at bargain stores for finds. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Julia Maher wrote an interesting post, Yes, it's Staged--but is it Appropriate? on staging a home properly for its price point. Without the help of a professional stager, the chances of this homeowner going in a store like the one aforementioned and finding the "right" stuff, is slim to none. Example: My Jonathan Adler upholstered side chairs retail for $500 each and are not sold to the public (available for purchase through a design professional or select vendors by custom order). If a home calls for these signature pieces, they get taken out of my residence (one stays stored, the other is used) and into the home. These chairs fit in tight spots and have that designer quality. And guess what? When the property sells, I take 'em back, unlike...well, read on.

As for the furniture, I'm wary of the homeowner finding and placing pieces that will best reflect the home's features. Even at a discount ("scratch 'n dent," hello), this can still be a sizable investment that could cost more than just using a stager, without the desired results. It very well could be detrimental and make the home harder to sell.

Flowers from a membership-only club, well...requires membership! While I prefer to establish a relationship and patronize a local florist, I will not condone or condemn flowers purchased elsewhere. But it is presumptous to say that the homeowner can just go and grab some flowers from such a place (are they members? is that another investment needed) or even how far said big box retailer is from the home. Right now, I'm seeing a lot of hassle and running around (gas is expensive, folks) for this homeowner. Savings? Nope.

The tragedy is, someone is out there giving bad advice. And the bottom line is, the homeowner is the one who loses here.

What to do?

Let's be professional like Elaine (See What Kind of Stager Are You?). Give agents a good impression of us and credibility to what we do.

Dispel the myths and actively (but positively) counter bad advice.

Be the expert: Go one step further and freely offer good advice on what you know.

Today I was busy dealing with a case of the Mondays (so much to do, so little time!), and didn't get my daily dose of rain until after 6 PM. That's when I umped on my email and blog and discovered....I'D BEEN DISCOVERED!

Okay, to my credit, I am a published writer and was almost a television star. (I turned down an offer to be in a commercial advertising a Mexican tienda...)

But even though I'm not on a Mexican~~-whoa-oh-radio~~ ad, I've been blessed with something truly special: A HIDDEN GEM DESIGNATION! Here I've been telling anyone that would listen just what a GOLD MINE Active Rain is....and it looks like someone thinks I'm not only special, I'm a GEM! (*blushing*)

I'd like to share a story from Belgium while I'm still sitting pretty. I met my best friend when I did a study abroad in London (we were from different universities, but in the same program). She was planning on going on a weekend coach tour to

Sure enough, there were 2 empty seats. The tour guides were two British lads, one being the driver and the other being the "voice" of the ride. The voice had a name but my friend and I quickly forgot it when we saw his rugged smile---his new moniker was Chippy. Well, we hop on the coach, make it from London to the port city of Dover, England and Chippy tells me, "I've got good news and bad." (Aside: why do people ask which you want to hear first? Doesn't that just add unneeded drama?)

"The bad news is the two girls who missed the coach this morning are going to be taking the chunnel and meeting up with us at the hostel. I won't have a seat for you then. The good news is, there's a bus back to London for just 10 quid."

My friend was so worried. At this point, it's around 7:30 AM and I'm in no mood to hop on a bus. I don't get up that early on a Saturday when I'm overseas for nothing! I tell the chap, no worries, get me to the hostel and I'll find my way back on my own." Of course my friend still worried--but I laugh in the face of ~~danger~~ travel woes!

I enjoyed the ferry from Dover to Calais, France, and then rode into the quaint city of Brugge. I've never liked waffles, but trust me, these are worth the trip. I lived off of chocolate and waffles that day. The group was carted off to a nice restaurant (I ate mussels for the first time, a tip from a Kiwi girl along on the journey) and later a pub, where everyone there was at least 6' tall (I'm 5'2"). After a night with the giants, it was back to the hostel.

In the morning, Chippy greeted his brood of followers with the question, "Do you know how I got home last night? 'Cause I don't!"

Apparently he had enjoyed a few too many strong Belgian ales.

I shared breakfast at the hostel with the group, went and got my ticket for the chunnel, played in a lovely park with a stray cat, and then was off. My friend stayed for the remaining tour of a cemetery (she still wonders what that was about...) and was later coached back. All's well that ends well.

What's this got to do with being a hidden gem? Well, I this story has some valuable extracts. Humor me:

1. Investment: I had to wake up early on a weekend in London, and you'd better believe I was going to make it to Belgium, no ifs, ands or buts. My time is valuable---so is yours! If you have taken the time to activate an account on Active|Rain, USE IT! You've made it this far.

2. Yes, I Know: Chippy may not know how he got home, but I know how I got discovered. I did a little scratch 'n sniff...

What is this Scratch 'n Sniff??

Scratch some backs, and even if they don't scratch back, chances are they--or someone else--will SNIFF YOU OUT.

As one of my earlier post shared, it's okay to pay some dues first and the get your feet wet. I like to read other blogs---it's the pulse of this community. I actually do care what others have to say---whether it's a heartfelt rant, success story, tip or market analysis.

When I take the time to make a comment, others are rewarded by knowing I read what they had to say, plus I get 25 points. When I take the EXTRA time to provide insight, it helps drive traffic back to my blog. It also establishes credibility. I was really flattered by a comment I received from Harley Ramsey who said that I "walk that walk." At the end of the day, you can blog a lot, but do you actually offer something to OUR COMMUNITY?

In addition to reading others' blogs, I want to include others in my blog. I decided to capitalize on something I know matters as a stager---visuals. I used a timeless graphic format---the comic strip---and incorporated photos and cute quips to tell a story. Now you can read Part 1 and Part 2 of my Staging Girl adventures, and rest assured that 3 is on the way! I've got a GUEST STAR LINEUP you don't want to miss.

Well, this blog is longer than I intended, so I'll wrap it up (plastic wrap courtesy of Fernando?). Thank you Margaret, for your kind words and designating me as a hidden gem. I've gotten such good feedback, and when it comes from someone who I respect (I'm one of her subscribers to boot), it's that much more meaningful. Bottom line: get out there, scratch some blogger backs, and get sniffed out of the crowd!

I remember a CitiBank ad that read, "Invest in the occasional Get-Happy-Quick Scheme." It featured a guy holding a dozen or so balloons on an elevator.

For my own Valentine's Day gift to myself, I was thinking about getting a humidifier. I actually need one (the gift is just a nice way to put it lol) because my studio had a former cat owner and I am deathly allergic. My antihistamine drowsiness is killing my productivity! Or so it seems. Anyway, I hate clunky, bulky, unattractive appliances/gizmos. (Read: It's taking me a while to find a humidifier that I actually want to invest in!) I also care about the energy efficiency and cost factor, fyi (not all vanity!).

Whilst in search of the perfect one (suggestions welcome), I've decided to spend some money (foolish, I know) on two high fashion frying pans, which I don't really need! Below left is the SILVER style; PEACOCK on right. Yummy. On sale for $12.99, it's a total GHQS!

Comment Commitment: Why I’d Like to Get my Feet Wet before Jumping Headfirst

I get it all the time: “You seem older,” or “I just knew you were older. Oh, no, not the way you look, it’s the way you act (carry yourself, behave, insert other verb here).” After the initial chagrin wears off (they must really think I LOOK old), I do accept this as a compliment.

How did I end up this way? Well, I grew up around adults more than kids. And I grew up down South…that means don’t speak unless you’re spoken to, which translates into a whole lot of listening. I was at the family business office far more than the playground, so I had to be inventive: forts out of couch cushions, drawing and photocopying magazines (25 cents per subscription, thank you), and behaving at the “grown up” lunch table.

While Gen X and Y rush to hush the older set, today I still revert to listening and then sharing. That’s why before I go “whole hog” on my blog, I’ve been aiming to read at least 15 – 20 blogs a day (and commenting on 10, a girl’s gotta get her points in!).

So I’m not going to whine about who’s got a gazillion points.

You heavyhitters (you know who you are and you’re proud of it!) earned your points, and yes, I’m at the bottom of the totem pole. And that’s OK. My mother taught me the value of hard work and I’m pretty skeptical of the longevity of your average Get-Rich-Quick Scheme. (although GRQSs do make for fun daydreams!)

When I’ve got more to say (after I’ve learned a bit from the seasoned vets), I’ll blog more. Until then, I’ll get points from commenting on the day’s hot topics. And make those comments worth something ---an occasional “thanks for sharing” is fine, but if you can add more insight, a new spin, or put some humor in your reply, do so! Because the next thing I do after reading a good blog post, is check out the blogs of the people who had enjoyable/noteworthy replies! We all appreciate someone who can “speak to us” and when I find a likeminded blogger, I like to see what else he or she has to say. Or if I find a particularly UNlikeminded blogger, well, guess what? I want to see what you have to say as well. After all, aren’t we all lifetime learners?
