Some changes for the 2009 season

This year we are focusing more on the landscaping and additional services of the business and less on the actual lawn mowing aspect of the business. We will still be offering our aeration, dethatching, lawn rolling, spring/fall clean ups, gutter cleaning, overseeding/ reseeding, and power washing services to new residential customers along with our full line-up of landscaping services from complete overhauls and new installs, to freshening up the mulch or planting new trees/shrubs or flowers.

One of our bigger changes for the 2009 season is we will not be accepting any commercial jobs, as we are going to be residential only this year.

Spring is on its way, here are my top Sping Lawn Care Tips for a Beautiful Lawn!

Many people often wonder why their neighbor has a stronger, healthier, and more beautiful lawn then their own. Chances are the neighbor cares for and maintains (or has a company that actually knows the keys to a great lawn) their lawn better than the person who's lawn might not be so nice and beautiful. Well you are in luck. I know the keys to the strong beautiful lawn that you need to do to have that strong, healthy, beautiful lawn that is the envy of the neighborhood, and I am going to share those keys with you. Along with these keys there are steps that you need to do for the entire lawn care season (typically April 1st-November 1st), like properly watering your lawn but today I am just going to focus on the spring time tips.

The first thing that you will want to do is remove the old dead leafs from last fall if you have not already done so. There are several ways this can be achieved. You can rake the leafs. Another way to remove the old leafs from the lawn is to mow the lawn with a bagger attachment. Always dispose of leafs, and lawn clippings properly for your area. Some areas only accept lawn debris at certain times of the year so check with your city or county to make sure they accept them. You can also put them into a compost area for use in your garden after they break down over a couple years as they make an excellent fertilizer for your garden.

The second step that you will want to do is to roll the lawn. Rolling the lawn is important as it smooths out the ground and removes the bumps making your lawn not only easier but safer to mow. Some think when you roll a lawn you just go one way and your done. It is actually best to roll the lawn front to back, diagonally twice, 2nd time being the opposite diagonal of the previous, then side to side (front to back and side to side can be switched but you want to cross diagonals in the middle of the two).

Next you will want to dethatch your lawn. Dethatching is the process of removing thatch, which is basically the left over dead lawn clippings from your lawn. This process can be done along with step #1 if you rake the lawn. However, when doing it along with cleaning up the leafs you will have to "power rake" (basically meaning put some good strength behind the rake) the lawn. The other way you can do dethatching is to buy a dethatcher for your tractor or contact a lawn care provider that offers the service to do it for you. If you bag your lawn clippings you can generally do this process every couple years.

For this forth step, aeration, I recommend hiring a lawn care provider that offers the service to do it for you as a good aeration machine is quite expensive to purchase, and many of the products targeted for homeowners for aeration simply do not work. Here is a good way to know if know if your aeration product does not work, after you are done there are no "plugs" laying on top of your lawn that were pulled out of the lawn. This step is very important and it is important to do it correctly using the proper machinery because it opens up your lawn for proper air, water and fertilization flow through the ground and to your lawns roots.

This fifth step goes along with step #4 (aeration). This step is called over seeding or re-seeding. This process is just what it sounds like it would be, spreading seed over your current lawn. You want to do this process after doing step #4 and I suggest doing it the same day or day after. Always use a spreader to ensure even distribution of the seeds so the lawn grows in evenly. Also pick a seed that is designed for the area you are seeding (ie. sun, shade, or if you have both find a sun and shade combination mix) and follow the directions on the bag as far as watering your new seeds. You will notice many of the grass seeds suggest using a starter fertilizer to help the seeds grow stronger and better, I do also suggest doing so, however I know there are many people who do not like to use fertilizers for various reasons (kids, pets, environment, ect.). If you are okay with using fertilizers do so about 3-4 weeks (or what your grass seed bag suggests) before aeration and over seeding, but after steps 1, 2 and 3. Also if you are not going to do the fertilization you can combine steps 3, 4 and 5 in their proper order in the same day/ weekend. Remember watering your lawn properly is a very important process that should be maintained season long, and always water new seeds as suggested on the bag of seeds.

The final step for spring is a good thing to do, but not really required. This step is fertilization. You will want to use a weed and feed fertilizer, if you plan on doing this step. If so, check the grass seed bag to see when they say it is okay to use a weed killing fertilizer (generally 1-2 months or longer after the over seeding process). Always use a spreader or hire a professional when fertilizing and carefully follow all warnings and directions on the fertilizer container. I also suggest using gloves, changing clothes when done, wearing an old pair of closed toe shoes, and taking a shower/bath following fertilizer application.

Fall lawn care tips

As many of us already know proper lawn care and maintenance is a vital part of your homes curb appeal and exterior beauty. Unfortunately, many people don't know how to properly maintain their lawn, so here are a few great tips that will help you this fall in not only maintaining your lawn, but ensuring a beautiful lawn next spring.

For those of you that do fertilize your lawn.... The first thing you want to do is your last weed & feed fertilizer treatment should be done by mid to late-September at the very latest. The reasoning for this is so there are no chemical reactions, nor an over fertilization when you do your winterizer fertilization treatment generally around late October. It is good to do a winterizer treatment to promote good root growth and health. Fertilizers are not for everyone for many different reasons, if you do not like them or don't want them used on your lawn no problem.

The rest of these tips are great for everyone to follow to help your lawn grow lush, thick, beautiful, and healthy with an excellent root system.

Dethatching- Dethatching is the process of removing the old dead grass clippings that have built up above the ground, which can choke out your lawn and prevent it from getting the proper water and nutrients from rain, air and fertilizers. Dethatching is done usually with a machine, however you can (if you have the time and energy) "power rake" to gain similar results, which is extremely vigorously raking your lawn which can be very tiresome, and time consuming.

Core Aeration- Core Aeration is the process of pulling plugs (commonly refered to as a core) out of the ground. By removing the core you are opening the ground so it can breathe, and take in nutrients from rain,air, and fertilizers. Also core aeration opens the ground so it is not compacted which promotes excellent root growth which is one of the biggest keys to a great, beautiful, healthy, lush, green lawn. While there are many different products on the market that claim to be aerators (generally refered to a spike aerators), including flip-flops with spikes these products do not work effectively.

Reseeding- Reseeding (also commonly refered to as over seeding) is the process of spreading new grass seed over your existing lawn. If you fertilize your lawn wait atleast one month before, and after doing a reseed as many fertilizers contain chemicals which will kill the new grass seed, wasting your time and money. Reseeding is an excellent and vital step to follow if your lawn is thin, or has bare spots for any reason. I recommend reseeding the entire lawn (front, or back or both if needed) instead of simply filling in the patches as it will give you a thick, rich, consitantly, even coloration throughout your entire lawn where spot seeding can give you patches of different colored grass which often can look odd and is highly noticable. Also, when doing a reseeding you will want to scuff or open up the ground a little, which can be done by raking the lawn. However, if you do the reseeding shortly after or the same day as the dethatching and aeration you have already opened the ground enough to do the reseed saving you some time and making your lawn even healthier, thicker, greener and more beautiful. Generally you should wait 2-4 weeks to allow your new grass to properly root itself in the ground before mowing your lawn, so make sure you mow your current lawn lower than you normally would, or be willing to allow your lawn to grow slightly higher than normal between cuts.

Fall Clean-up- Fall clean-ups are just as they sound, clean up the leafs that fall. Whether you pick them up when mowing with a bagger system or rake them up it is best to get them out of the yard as opposed to just mulching them into the lawn. However, mulching the dead leafs into the yard is still better than actually leaving them sitting on top of the lawn, which can actually kill your lawn.

Just a reminder, I don't work in the rain, and you shouldn't mow in it either

There are many reasons why I don't work in the rain and your lawn care provider shouldn't either. Some are for my own reasons to protect myself and my investment. And several are to protect my clients, their lawns and their investments in the beautification of their lawn.

I will cover my reasons here 1st:

1. The equipment is not designed to be used in the rain for the most part. I don't know many who would be thrilled about ruining a $12,000 machine to make a very small fraction of that amount, because remember many warrenties do not cover stupidity lol.

2. Bagging lawn clippings is a pain in the butt when they are wet because they stick to everyting and clog up the shoot and mower deck. And often times do not fully bag which can make the lawn look bad.

3. If I get sick from working in the rain we all lose out. I am not able to work and make any money, your lawn won't get mowed.

4. I do not enjoy possibly tearing someones lawn up simply to make a buck. Lawns aren't really designed to be mowed when wet (when the ground is wet the roots are easily loosened and you can actually rip the grass right out of the lawn quite easily).

5. Mowing on wet slopes is dangerous as lawn mowers can easily slip or slide on wet lawns, resulting in tearing up of the lawn or possible injury. (Homeowners who hire uninsured companies/ persons can actually be sued if an uninsured person is injured while working at their home... always make sure anyone who works on your home is insured!)

Ok, now for the reasons that are really important... the reasons I do not mow in the rain or when the ground is wet for my clients:

1. More often than not a lawn that is mowed when wet will have a higher tendancy to "clump" and look nasty (the grass clippings clump/ stick together to make big ugly clumps of dead grass on the lawn instead of spreading out evenly under normal mowing conditions which can build up thatch(dead grass in the lawn) un evenly as well).

2. When the ground it can get ruts in it quite easily. Ruts are caused primarily from driving/ riding heavy equipment over wet ground. While these ruts generally can be fixed by rolling the lawn why would anyone want to have more of an expense than otherwise needed for something so easily preventable.

3. This is actually also one of my own personal reasons for not mowing when the ground is wet.... I do not enjoy tearing up someones lawn to make a buck (same as #4 of my personal reasons).

4. This I feel is probably the most important one of all and really sums each and every one of these reasons in one..... My clients deserve the best possible care and service possible, afterall they pay for a service and I would be cheating them if it could be done better.

I have a beautiful fiancee and a great kid (Chloey, our 2 yr old bloxer/ pit mix)
I wish the economy was ALOT better
I hate chinese food lol
I miss playing basketball... all the time!
I fear nothing
I feel like going back to bed lol... I'm still not feeling all that great :-( I hear the freecreditreport.com commercial on T.V. and my air purifier running lol
I smell fresh and clean since I just got out of the shower
I search for a cheap way to convert this fish tank I just got into a saltwater tank lol (I am not about to spend over a grand for water, rocks, sand, coral, filters, lights, and fish lol)
I regret nothing for everything I have done has made me the person I am today :-D
I love Ashlee, Chloey, and my friends and family :-D
I care about many things, especially my friends, family, and animals
I always strive for perfection
I am not that hard to please
I believe in god
