Southern Living Magazine Idea House Opens in Port Aransas

The 2009 Southern Living Magazine Idea Home is now open to the public. The Idea House sponsored by Southern Living magazine opens Saturday, June 6, in the Cinnamon Shore residential development. It is one of two Idea Houses built for the magazine this year.

Admission for tours is $5 per person, $2 of which will go to the Port Aransas
Education Foundation. Volunteers for the organization, which raises private money to
fund programs, activities and equipment for Port Aransas Independent School District
teachers and students, will lead the tours through Sept. 27.

The house will be open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

New western Gulf of Mexico deepwater shore base to open in Port Aransas

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - Gulf Access Base has the 200 acre McDermott facility on the Corpus Christi Ship Channel under contract with plans to close on the property in December of this year.

“This facility is the only one of its kind on the western Gulf”, says Sam Canterbury, Partner in the project. “The facility is highly stabilized with 4,700’ of bulkhead with up to 46 ft of water including a 1,650’ X 500’ slip. We are located only 150 miles from Alaminos Canyon operations which will allow operators to cut transportation costs more than half in many cases.”

Plans for the facility include leasing dedicated secure parcels of 1 – 100 Acres as storage, staging, and base operations for deepwater operators in the western Gulf. Load in, load out, fuel, water, and provisions will be available. Port security and controlled parking will be provided. Space for suppliers and service providers is also planned.

“As the deep western gulf is developed by both old and new players, a support center of this type has become necessary” according to Canterbury. “We have the location, improved space, and water depth to meet the needs of the industry now and in the future.”

New Port Aransas Beach Webcam

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - The Dunes Condominiums located at 1000 Lantana in Port Aransas recently installed a new webcam. The new cam overlooks the Horace Caldwell pier and offers viewers a great beach vantage point from the roof of the condo building. Check out the Port Aransas Beach Webcam and it will automatically refresh. If you can't make it to the beach, you can at least have a virtual escape to Port A.

The Dunes condos are located in the heart of Port A and this camera will soon be showing throngs of beachgoers as we approach the Summer Season.

Sandcastles, Fires And Photos

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - As previously posted, SandFest was a big success and crowds were estimated at 80,000 despite an incorrect gloomy weather forecast. Visitors from Austin, San Antonio and Houston missed the torrential rains that drenched those cities. If you missed the previous post with the SandFest video, you can find it here.

One secret that has been discovered in recent years is that Monday morning is a great time to see the sculptures without the crowds and parking issues. I spent about 30 minutes walking through the amazing sculptures this morning. Here are a few of my favorite photos.

The images below were taken this morning as well. Saturday night several area Fire Departments responded to a grass fire in the dunes. The blaze was allegedly started by a vehicle illegally four-wheeling in the dunes. The heat from the exhaust started the fire. Three to four acres were burned and as these photos show, the flames were close to quite a few beachfront homes. Fortunately, no homes were damaged.

SandFest: The Largest Sandsculpting Competition In U.S. Is In Port Aransas

Hurricane Dolly swept into south Texas the last few days. South Padre took the brunt of the storm with businesses predicting no water or electric for a least a week. Port Aransas faired my better. About 3" of rain fall (in bands of rain), so the water had time to drain. Looks like bright and sunny for the rest of the week.

July 1 Update

With gas princes hovering around $4.00 per gallon, what has been the impact on tourism in Port Aransas. Weekends are still very busy, however Tuesdays, Wednesday's and Thursdays' seem to be a bit slower than last year. The good thing is that means less people on the beaches and less in the restaurants. The new golf course, Newport Dunes Golf (www.newportdunesgolf.com) is scheduled to open August 15th. The weather has been perfect everyday, 86 degrees daytime, and 79 degrees at night. The ocean is clear and warm, fishing has been very good.
