SOS Metals Island Recycling is admirably hosting a metal recycling fundraiser for local non-profit organizations including Habitat for Humanity and the Community Work Day program. The fundraiser will take place from the 16th to the 20th of this month.

Abandoned cars and appliances mar the pristine beauty of Maui and no one wants to look at them. This is an opportunity to put them to use. You can bring all the metal items that you have accumulated or that have been abandoned, including scrap metal, appliances, vehicles and non-ferrous metal items such as copper, brass, stainless steel, aluminum and lead. Even vehicle batteries will be accepted if you can spare $5 so they can be processed.

Hawaii Energy Woes Approaching Solutions

Hawaii's energy troubles are looking toward a brighter and more sustainable future, based on recent information about the use of Smart Grid technology and wind farms. The state is currently reviewing a massive project to run undersea power cables between Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Maui. The bidding process for a company that can conduct an environmental impact study on this process is underway.

The cable will be at least 30 miles long and its purpose would be to tie the islands together on one electrical grid so that renewable energy generated in Maui county could be used in Oahu where most of the state's electricity is consumed. Not only is Maui's wind farm a proposed source of renewable energy, but so are two more proposed wind farms on the islands of Molokai and Lanai.

Maui Rotary Club Hosts BBQ Challenge

The 1st Annual Great Pulehu Challenge will be held on November 8th this year by the Rotary Club of Maui.

What does this event entail? Eight teams from Maui's non-profit organizations will compete at a BBQ cook-off challenge. There will be over $500 in cash and prizes for the winners and they will have everything from pork to chicken to beef sizzling on their grills.

Hawaiian Heritage Film Festival Cultural Infusion

Heart Strings will be playing at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on October 11th from 3-5p.m. This is a story about Kamaka and Sons, a 100 year-old family business operating out of a tiny shop in Honolulu. They make Hawaiian musical instruments and of all the other businesses doing the same at the start of the 20th century, theirs is the only one left.

Hybrid Maui Rental Cars from Enterprise

Four Enterprise rent-a-car locations in Hawaii will soon offer hybrid vehicles. Three are located on Oahu and one on Maui. Enterprise says that they will offer a larger selection of hybrid vehicles which can be reserved by phone or online.

The increase in hybrid selection is owed to a nationwide effort spanning almost one hundred locations. The Maui Enterprise location can be found at 40 Hana Highway near Kahului International Airport. Choices include the Honda Civic and Insight or the Toyota Prius.

Maui's Faster Bed & Breakfast Permitting System

Maui's Bed & Breakfast permitting system has recently been through a lot of changes. Due to certain regulations, many have recently had to close their doors, but this year, the permitting system has been processing applications faster. The Maui County ordinance to speed the process was put into place in January of this year. Since then, a third of the applicants have recieved their licenses to open their doors to guests.

Between 1997 and 2008, only fourteen bed and breakfast permits were approved. This year, the Planning Department began processing permits in March and since then, 18 of 54 applications filed have been approved. So far, it looks like the new ordinance is making it easire to get B&B's running whether or not they are located outside of hotel districts.

The state of Hawaii takes the health of its natural resources very seriously. With innumerable visitors attracted to the natural beauty of these islands every year, it's no surprise that the unique and spectacular ecology here should be so well guarded. The protection of coral reefs in Maui and Oahu waters has been a hot topic in the news recently as a result of a few mishaps.

A Snorkel Charter lost one of its boats off Molokini due to a mechanical failure back in 2006, for which it was fined $396,000. The fine wouldn't have been so high if the salvage effort hadn't tripled the damage done to coral there. Over 1,200 coral colonies were damaged at this popular diving spot as a result of this incident.

Being one of the lucky residents of Hawaii there is so much to choose from in the way of favorite parks, as soon as I heard the subject posed, Iao Valley instantly popped into my head.

While you wouldn't think the site of a very bloody battle -- so bloody in fact the river was said to have run red -- would be a top pick. Way back in 1790, King Kamehameha I defeated the Maui chieftains and their armies in his efforts to unite the Hawaiian Islands. This very battle was an integral part of Hawaii's history.

Now the valley is a tranquil, must visit park, with its 2,250-foot natural rock pinnacle looking over Iao Valley. This peaceful lush area is surrounded by the walls of the Pu-u Kukui Crater (part of the West Maui Mountains). Trails in the State Park run alongside Iao Stream and through the forest making for easy hikes that take you around to leisurely look at the exotic tropical plants and crystal clear pools.

Your time in the park doesn't have to stop there! Make sure to stop at the Kepaniwai Park's Heritage Gardens which is found right below the Needle.

Memorializing the multicultural history of Maui since 1952, the Heritage Gardens include scale models of ethnic buildings and gardens representing the immigration of Hawaii's people including a New England Salt Box, Japanese Tea House, Hawaiian grass shack with taro patch, Chinese Moon Gate, Portuguese outdoor oven, and beautiful landscaping.

Picnic tables and fire pits are available making this garden a perfect picnic stop. Locals use it for birthday parties, first birthday celebrations or just to sit and enjoy time together.
