Clothes dryers can be found in 80 percent, or 81.5 million homes throughout the United States. A full load of wet clothes placed in a dryer contains about one half gallon of water. As water is removed, lint is created from the clothes. In a properly installed vent, any lint that escapes the dryer's lint filter should be blown outdoors. Any accumulation which occurs in a dryer's ducting is usually a sign of poor air flow, especially at the location(s) it occurs. In such cases the vent line should be evaluated to locate and correct any deficiencies it may have.

The vent should be as short and as straight and with as few elbows as possible. The more bends and turns, the greater the reduction in air flow there is and more areas where lint can accumulate. More bends will also hamper dryer vent cleaning, which leading Appliance Manufacturers recommend should be performed annually.

It is sometimes possible to tell if a dryer's vent is the cause of poor drying by totally removing the vent line from the dryer and doing a couple of loads. If drying improves, you can be sure the vent is (at least part of) the problem. When attaching multiple sections of pipe together do not use sheet metal screws, use metal foil tape instead. Any protuberances into the vent will cause obstructions where lint can accumulate, eventually leading to a restriction, and allow lint to build up. Those protuberances will also make the inevitable dryer vent cleaning much more difficult.

Liverpool, NY-Onondaga County, New York reports more fires during the winter months because people are using fireplaces, wood stoves and space heaters, according to many of the county fire departments.

It's the lint you don't see that can be the problem - not the lint in the lint trap that a conscientious person would remove with each load, he said. It's the lint that can build up in the dryer vent line.

"When a dryer gets clogged with lint, it doesn't give the dryer any room to breathe," Stevenson said. "That can cause the lint to catch on fire." Lint accumulation also can cause dryers to stop working or to work inefficiently, he said. The tip-off can be anything from a load taking repeated cycles to dry or a load getting hot but staying wet.

Early in January, he received a call from the owners of an Erie Village residence whose dryer wasn't working very well.

Upon initial inspection of the dryer vent termination point, Stevenson saw some straw built up in the end of the rigid metal vent line. A thorough cleaning of the full length of their dryer vent removed the accumulated lint as well as the bird's nest that had been built in the line. This vent was covered with a "critter guard", but the nest was built either before it was installed or by a bird that could fit through the small opening (1/2") of the "critter guard".

In addition to the vent line cleaning, Stevenson also replaced the plastic accordion transition piece that connected the dryer to the metal vent line in the wall with a rigid aluminum metal duct.

Q: Is DVW doing anything to make consumers aware of the need to maintain their dryer and dryer vent annually in an effort to prevent dryer fires?

A: Absolutely. DVW technicians are trained to educate consumers about dryer maintenance and dryer fire prevention as much as they are trained to provide solutions to dryer vent problems. DVW is also involved in consumer awareness programs to increase consumer understanding of the importance of dryer maintenance and dryer fire prevention. Working with local fire departments, local and national fire prevention associations DVW is hopeful that heightened awareness will reduce the number of dryer fires annually. DVW has also joined efforts with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, (CPSC), and the U.S. Fire Administration, (USFA), in spreading the word about the need for annual maintenance.
