“Dryer Vent Cleaning” Prevents Dryer Fires and Saves on Energy Costs, advises “Dryer Vent Repair” Company Clyde, New York

Regular dryer vent cleaning makes the clothes dryer more efficient which saves you money on your energy bills. When lint builds up in the dryer vent system, it restricts air flow and causes the dryer to work harder and use more energy to get clothes dry. A clogged vent is also a fire hazard. Lint is a very combustible material that can easily ignite as the dryer vent overheats from restricted air-flow. Failure to keep the vent clean is the leading cause of dryer fires in the US.

The most common sign of a clogged dryer vent is the dryer takes more than one cycle to properly dry clothes. People often think this is because the heat element is worn out, so they go ahead and put the clothes through 2 - 3 cycles to get them dry. This is a waste of energy that will eventually lead to a fire.

Another source of concern in the length of the dryer vent; it should be as short as possible, with as few bends as possible. The longer the vent, the harder the dryer will work and the greater the chances are of having a fire. Longer vents are also more difficult to keep clean.

When laundry facilities are located on upper floors, or they are not against an outside wall, the vents are often longer and require special tools and equipment to properly clean them. All clothes dryers, especially those with longer vents, should be professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year. Lint isn't the only cause of clogged vents. Birds and small animals often climb in to get warm, build a nest and make it their home.

Another concern with gas dryers is carbon monoxide poisoning. Everyone associates this issue with their furnace or water heater; it is also a concern with a gas dryer. It is a law that all furnaces, water heaters and clothes dryers be vented to the outdoors. Of these three appliances, the clothes dryer has the greatest chance of causing a fire and is often the least expensive to service.

"Dryer Vent Cleaning and "Dryer Vent Repair" Pen Yan, New York, Don’t Let Your Dryer Start a Fire!!!

Clothes dryers can be found in 80 percent, or 81.5 million homes throughout the United States. A full load of wet clothes placed in a dryer contains about one half gallon of water. As water is removed, lint is created from the clothes. In a properly installed vent, any lint that escapes the dryer's lint filter should be blown outdoors. Any accumulation which occurs in a dryer's ducting is usually a sign of poor air flow, especially at the location(s) it occurs. In such cases the vent line should be evaluated to locate and correct any deficiencies it may have.

The vent should be as short and as straight and with as few elbows as possible. The more bends and turns, the greater the reduction in air flow there is and more areas where lint can accumulate. More bends will also hamper dryer vent cleaning, which leading Appliance Manufacturers recommend should be performed annually.

It is sometimes possible to tell if a dryer's vent is the cause of poor drying by totally removing the vent line from the dryer and doing a couple of loads. If drying improves, you can be sure the vent is (at least part of) the problem. When attaching multiple sections of pipe together do not use sheet metal screws, use metal foil tape instead. Any protuberances into the vent will cause obstructions where lint can accumulate, eventually leading to a restriction, and allow lint to build up. Those protuberances will also make the inevitable dryer vent cleaning much more difficult.

Clothes dryers are one of the most expensive appliances in your home to operate. The longer it runs the more money it costs you. Dryer vents clogged with lint cause the dryer to run longer resulting in excess energy costs of $18 to $24 per month. According to the U. S. Fire Administration, dryer fires account for an average of 15,000 fires with an approximate $88 million in property damage, 15 deaths and 400 injuries annually. "Failure to clean" was cited as the leading factor contributing to clothes dryer fires in residential buildings. On a positive note, the number of clothes dryer fires has dropped by 35% from the 24,000 fires that occurred annually, on average, in the late 1970's.

Consumer Reports says that flexible dryer ducts made of foil and plastic are the most problematic because they can sag and let lint build up at low points. Metal ducts, either flexible or solid, are far safer because they don't sag, so lint is less likely to build up. In addition, if a fire does start, a metal duct is more likely to contain it.

No matter which kind of duct you have, you should clean it regularly. In addition, clean the lint screen each time you use your dryer. This not only will reduce the risk of fire, but your dryer will dry your clothes faster and use less energy.

Dryer's Do's and Don'ts

•· Clean the lint filter before and after each load

•· Do not dry clothing/fabric on which there is anything flammable (alcohol, cooking oils, gasoline, spot removers, dry cleaning solvents, etc.) Flammable substances give off vapors that could ignite or explode.

•· Don't forget to read manufacturers' warning about the use and care of your appliance in manuals that accompany new dryers.

•· Replace plastic, vinyl and aluminum foil venting with rigid or flexible metal venting to comply with NYS Building code.

Advice from Wizard John to Consumers in Clyde, New York about "Dryer Vent Cleaning" and Maintenance

Did you know that:

•· Clothes dryers can be found in 80 percent, or 81.5 million homes throughout the United States.

•· A full load of wet clothes placed in a dryer contains about one half gallon of water. As water is removed, lint is created from the clothes.

•· Clothes dryers are one of the most expensive appliances in your home to operate. The longer it runs the more money it costs you. Dryer vents clogged with lint cause the dryer to run longer resulting in excess energy costs of $18 to $24 per month.

If a clothes dryer takes longer than one cycle to dry a load then there may be a fire hazard in the dryer vent.

•· Leading appliance manufacturers recommend your dryer vent be cleaned every year.

There are 15,500 fires associated with clothes dryers annually. These fires account for 20 deaths, 370 injuries and more than $88 million in property damage.

On a positive note, the number of clothes dryer fires has dropped by 35% from the 24,000 fires that occurred annually, on average, in the late 1970s.

One of the most important functions of a dryer is the elimination of moisture recovered during the heating of damp clothing. This moisture is held in the warm air produced by the dryer as humidity and is normally expelled to the outdoors through the dryer's vent. If this air cannot be adequately removed, poor drying will result. This moisture can also condense into pools of water in the dryer vent, eventually leaking out. Any moisture accumulation inside the dryer ducting is a sign of poor venting which should be looked into.

Dryer do's and don'ts:

· Clean the lint filter before or after each load. Don't forget to clean the back of the dryer where lint can be trapped.

· The interior of the dryer and venting system should be cleaned periodically by qualified service personnel. If you notice the drying time is taking longer, clean the vent system thoroughly to ensure proper airflow.

· Replace plastic, vinyl and aluminum foil venting with rigid or flexible metal venting to bring it to NY State and local Residential Building Code.

· Do not dry clothing/fabric on which there is anything flammable (alcohol, cooking oils, gasoline, spot removers, dry-cleaning solvents, etc.). Flammable substances give off vapors that could ignite or explode.

• Don't forget to read manufacturers' warnings in use and care manuals that accompany new dryers. Also, warning markings can usually be found on the inside of the dryer's lid and take only minutes to read.

Don't let your clothes dryer start a fire; Keep your home safe and sound. Dryer Vents is ALL we do; We ARE the experts! Call us for an inspection, repair, cleaning and installation service today! http://www.dryerventwizard.com

Tips from John - Auburn, New York: "Dryer Vent Cleaning" and Maintenance

Homeowners, who think it is normal for their dryer to take more than one cycle to dry clothes, think again. Lint accumulation or blockage in the vent is a known cause of dryers running inefficiently.

While consumers are aware of the need to conserve energy, they are still unaware that yearly dryer and dryer vent maintenance can help cut energy bills as well as prevent dryer fires. The average home spends about $1900 on energy costs every year, according to research conducted by Energy Star, a program managed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with assistance from the U.S. Department of Energy.

As energy costs increase, consumers need to be made aware of the importance of proper cleaning and maintenance of all their appliances. Here are some tips for maintaining the clothes dryer for energy savings and fire prevention:

Be sure that dryer vent systems are up to code with city, state and manufacturer.

Have dryer vents professionally cleaned and inspected annually

Clean lint traps before and after drying a load.

Dry loads of similar type and weight of fabric together. Lower dryer temperatures may be used for certain clothes.

Keep the clothes dryer outside exhaust clean. A clogged exhaust lengthens drying time.

"Consumers who follow these guidelines will find their clothes dryer takes less time to dry clothes saving time, money and extending the life of their clothes," says Stevenson.

In addition, to conserving energy, dryer manufacturers, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), advise annual dryer and dryer vent maintenance to prevent dryer fires, a leading cause of homes fires in the U.S.

This article was written by John Stevenson, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard of Upstate NY, http://www.dryerventwizard.com which specializes in dryer vent cleaning, replacing vents made of flammable material, repairing and altering vents for residential and commercial clients. While cleaning out a vent recently at Erie Village, Stevenson found the cause for the customer's dryer taking longer than it should to dry. There was a bird's nest that had been built in the vent line, even though it had a critter guard at the vent cover.

More Fires in Onondaga County, New York are Reported in Winter Months, but Clothes Dryer Fires Happen Year Around

John Stevenson of Dryer Vent Wizard strives to increase public awareness on dryer vent maintenance and clothes dryer fire prevention

Liverpool, NY-Onondaga County, New York reports more fires during the winter months because people are using fireplaces, wood stoves and space heaters, according to many of the county fire departments.

But a clothes dryer can be just as dangerous any time of the year, according to Elbridge resident John Stevenson, who owns Dryer Vent Wizard. Lint is the villain - lint that has been allowed to linger too long. Stevenson explains dryer vent maintenance and fire prevention to all his customers.

"It's something very few people know about or think about," said Stevenson, whose company specializes in dryer vent cleaning, maintenance, alteration and repair. "It's a leading cause of dryer fires."

It's the lint you don't see that can be the problem - not the lint in the lint trap that a conscientious person would remove with each load, he said. It's the lint that can build up in the dryer vent line.

"When a dryer gets clogged with lint, it doesn't give the dryer any room to breathe," Stevenson said. "That can cause the lint to catch on fire." Lint accumulation also can cause dryers to stop working or to work inefficiently, he said. The tip-off can be anything from a load taking repeated cycles to dry or a load getting hot but staying wet.

Early in January, he received a call from the owners of an Erie Village residence whose dryer wasn't working very well.

Upon initial inspection of the dryer vent termination point, Stevenson saw some straw built up in the end of the rigid metal vent line. A thorough cleaning of the full length of their dryer vent removed the accumulated lint as well as the bird's nest that had been built in the line. This vent was covered with a "critter guard", but the nest was built either before it was installed or by a bird that could fit through the small opening (1/2") of the "critter guard".

In addition to the vent line cleaning, Stevenson also replaced the plastic accordion transition piece that connected the dryer to the metal vent line in the wall with a rigid aluminum metal duct.

According to the U.S.

Don't let your clothes dryer start a fire; Keep your home safe and sound. Dryer Vents is ALL we do; We ARE the experts! Call us for an inspection, repair, cleaning and installation service today! http://www.dryerventwizard.com

Expert Advice for Cutting Energy Bills; Regular "Dryer Vent Cleaning" and Maintenance Key--Dryer Vent Wizard of Syracuse, New York Offers Tips

John Stevenson enjoys the opportunity to educate consumers on preventing clothes dryer fires while saving energy

Syracuse, NY - Homeowners who think its normal for their dryer to take more than one cycle to dry clothes -- think again. Lint accumulation or blockage in the vent is a known cause of dryers running inefficiently, says John Stevenson, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard in New York, the largest chain of dryer vent specialists in the U.S.

"While consumers are becoming more aware of the need to conserve energy, they are still unaware that yearly dryer and dryer vent maintenance can help cut energy consumption and bills," says Stevenson.

The average home spends about $1900 on energy costs every year, according to research conducted by Energy Star a program managed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with assistance from the U.S. Department of Energy.

"With energy costs rising, our role is as much about educating customers as it is providing dryer vent solutions," says Stevenson, whose Upstate NY franchise specializes in dryer vent cleaning, replacing vents made of flammable material, repairing and altering vents for residential and commercial clients.

Stevenson shares maintenance with the customers he services; he advises them to be sure their dryer vent systems are up to city, state and manufacturers codes, replace plastic or foil vent with semi-rigid or solid metal venting, and have vents professionally cleaned and inspected annually. Between inspections, consumers should clean lint traps after each load and wash with soapy water every few months to remove residue from dryer sheets.

John also educates consumers about warning signs to look for including clothes taking more than one cycle to dry, no visible lint on the lint screen and dryer repeatedly stopping during a cycle. For more tips and information visit http://www.dryerventwizard.com

"Consumers who follow these guidelines will be pleasantly surprised when their find their clothes dryer takes less time to dry clothes because it uses less energy," says Stevenson.

Leading "Dryer Vent Cleaning" Company Servicing Rochester, Fairport, Pittsburg, Scottsville, Spencerport in Monroe County, New York

Former Metal Finisher Turns Dryer Vent Wizard Entrepreneur; Provides Dryer Fire Prevention and Maintenance Tips to Consumers

John Stevenson finds a career change rewarding as he is dedicated to educating consumers on dryer fire prevention

Scottsville, NY -- John Stevenson, Former VP of Metal Finishing Firm, traded his platers uniform for a logo-ed uniform to own and operate a Dryer Vent Wizard (DVW), franchise in Upstate NY. Stevenson is dedicated to educating consumers in his community while providing dryer vent maintenance, cleaning, repair, replacement and alterations services to prevent dryer fires, keep dryers functioning properly and provide energy savings.

When Stevenson decided he didn't want back into the metal finishing business and wasn't ready to retire, he looked into franchising. Having a variety of experiences and skills acquired earlier in his metal finishing career gave him a wealth of experience on which to draw. He researched several concepts and found Dryer Vent Wizard, despite the funny name, Stevenson found the concept intriguing. "I liked that DVW provided much needed solutions to consumers' dryer and dryer vent problems which ultimately prevents dryer fires," says Stevenson.

According to Stevenson, consumer response to DVW has been positive, although a big part of what he does is still educating. "When consumers find their dryer taking more than one cycle to dry a load, they assume it's mechanical when the real problem is lint accumulation in the dryer vent causing the dryer to work inefficiently and become susceptible to a dryer fire," says Stevenson.

In an effort to make consumers more aware, metal finisher turned entrepreneur Stevenson shares these maintenance "tips" to prevent dryer fires and keep dryers running efficiently:

•· Be sure that dryer vent systems are up to code with city, state and manufacturer.

•· Replace any plastic or foil vent with semi-rigid or solid metal venting

•· Clean screen lint trays before and after drying a load.

•· Wash lint screens with soap and water every few months to remove residue left behind by fabric softeners.

•· Don't leave the house or go to bed with the dryer running.

•· Have dryer vents professionally cleaned and inspected annually.

           Warning signs to look for:

•· Clothes are taking more than one cycle to dry, especially jeans and towels.

•· No lint visible on lint screen.

•· Dryer repeatedly stops during a cycle

•· Clothes have moldy smell after dry cycle

"Consumers who follow these guidelines," says Stevenson "will create a safe environment in their home, prolong the life of their dryer and save money on energy bills." For more information, visit http://www.dryerventwizard.com

About Dryer Vent Wizard, "Dryer Vent Cleaning" and "Dryer Vent Repair" Company, Rochester, New York

Q: How did Dryer Vent Wizard originate?

A: Dryer Vent Wizard was founded by David Lavalle, (also founder of the Mr. Handyman franchise) in 2004 in Boston, Massachusetts. The concept was created to meet the "urgent response" need of consumers who were dealing with clothes dryer problems. These problems were a result of dryer vent lint accumulation causing dryers to function inefficiently or not at all. The business originated as a result of finding no one specializing in this type of work.

Q: Why would someone pay to have their dryer vent cleaned out? It seems so simple. Couldn't they do it themselves?

A: Time is a precious commodity for most people today. While cleaning a dryer vent may seem simple, DVW owners and technicians have specialized training, tools, materials and time to spend on correcting dryer vent problems. Busy households have an urgent need to get their dryers up and running and look to specialists like DVW help them get quick solutions to their dryer vent problems.

Q: I have never heard of anyone having a dryer vent problem or dryer fire. How big of a problem is it really?

A. According to a recent dryer fire study conducted by the United States Fire Administration (USFA), on average, dryer fires account for approximately 15,000 structure fires, 15 deaths, 400 injuries and $88 million in property damage annually. "Failure to clean" was citied as the leading cause of these fires. It's evident that consumers are unaware that clothes dryer and dryer vent maintenance is necessary to keep dryers functioning properly and prevent dryer fires. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, (CPSC), and Consumer Reports confirm that dryer fires are a home safety issue and proper maintenance is key to keeping dryer functioning properly and preventing dryer fires.

Q: Are there warning signals that a dryer vent could be a problem?

A. Yes. When a consumer finds their dryer taking multiple cycles to dry clothes or keeps stopping during a cycle, the cause could be lint accumulation in the vent line causing the dryer to work inefficiently or not at all. Also, a moldy smell in the clothes could indicate moisture in the line, causing the dryer to work harder and less efficiently.

Q: What is the range of services that DVW offers?

A: Dryer Vent Wizard provides maintenance, inspection, cleaning, repairs, alterations and complete installation of dryer vent systems for residential and commercial customers.

Q: How much does it cost to have your dryer vent cleaned and replaced?

A: Since each household is unique, an estimate is provided after DVW technicians perform a 10 point diagnostic inspection. This inspection identifies the extent of the dryer vent problem and provides the basis of the estimate and solutions.

Q: Why don't people just buy a new dryer?

A. Because the dryer is not the problem. It's the lint accumulation or blockage in the vent causing the dryer to function inefficiently or not at all.

Q: Are there any other benefits to annual dryer vent maintenance besides making your dryer run more efficiently and prevent dryer fires?

A. While these are the primary benefits to dryer and dryer vent maintenance, consumers can look forward to lower energy bills as a result of the dryer not having to work so hard and long to dry clothes. In addition, clothes don't wear out as quickly when they don't have to go through multiple cycles.

Q: Is DVW doing anything to make consumers aware of the need to maintain their dryer and dryer vent annually in an effort to prevent dryer fires?

A: Absolutely. DVW technicians are trained to educate consumers about dryer maintenance and dryer fire prevention as much as they are trained to provide solutions to dryer vent problems. DVW is also involved in consumer awareness programs to increase consumer understanding of the importance of dryer maintenance and dryer fire prevention. Working with local fire departments, local and national fire prevention associations DVW is hopeful that heightened awareness will reduce the number of dryer fires annually. DVW has also joined efforts with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, (CPSC), and the U.S. Fire Administration, (USFA), in spreading the word about the need for annual maintenance.

In addition, DVW has also initiated a program called "Protecting Those Who Protect Us." This program provides DVW services to local fire stations in areas DVW have franchisees. It makes sense that the folks who fight these fires should be looked after by DVW as well. Dryer Vent Wizard will also be involved in Fire Prevention month scheduled for October 2007.
