Feeling Bad for Barack Obama

As we here in Denver are preparing for the Democratic National Convention, I got to thinking about poor Senator Barack Obama. This man is running for President of the United States. Why would I be feeling bad for him?

1. He has to live in Washington D. C. I know Washington D. C. is a beautiful city, as a matter of fact, I've visited a couple of times and would love to go back. But, it is not Denver. (Here is where the disclosure comes in. I'm a Colorado native so I may be a bit biased.)

2. If Mr. Obama ends up living in the White House, he has an amazing lawn and will host large picnics, but it still isn't Washington Park. Denver has a number of premier parks, but Washington Park has always been one of my favorites with it's diverse and fun-loving crowd of people. Up for a volleyball game? I'm not sure they host volleyball games on the White House Lawn. Just let us know Mr. Obama if you'd like us to hold you a spot in one of our games.

3. While we've been having a warmer summer than usual this year, our weather has still been fantastic. We have more than 300 days of sunshine that melt away the snow usually within 24 hours. I'm sure with the White House driveway, someone has to be ready with the shovel when the first snowflake hits. Here, we check the next day's weather to decide whether to shovel or not. It gives us more time for skiing instead of shoveling. How many ski slopes are within driving distance of Washington D. C.? I'm betting we have lots more.

4. No 14ers. Colorado has 54 peaks that are more than 14,000 feet in elevation. Talk about places to clear your head. These are good spots to contemplate the energy crisis, health care, social security and other key issues impacting our country. I wonder if the key leaders of our country would benefit from having to debate issues while in hiking boots at the top of mountains? Since there isn't quite as much oxygen, it might require using fewer and more focused words to get your point across. Regardless, I know there aren't 14ers in the Washington D. C. area. Let us know if we can schedule a trip for you while you are in town, Senator Obama. It will change your perspective.

5. You can never be alone. It is too bad in this day and age that our highest leaders require constant security. Here in Colorado, we value our solitude. There is nothing like sitting on a rock in the middle of one of our Colorado streams just enjoying the scenery. The rush of water, the mountain wildflowers and the amazing wildlife keep us balanced when life gets crazy. We have some fabulous wildflower drives if your black vehicles are 4WD. I will insist, though, that you open the windows so you can enjoy the view during the drive. I'll even bring the picnic and a wonderful bottle of Colorado wine.

I'm sorry Senator Obama that you can't just pick up and move to Colorado. We'd love to have you visit more of our beautiful state beyond just the Pepsi Center and Invesco Field at Mile High. They are definitely both wonderful Colorado venues, but you'll still be missing the bigger Colorado picture. Give me a call after things get settled in November. I'm sure we could arrange at least a taste of what Colorado has to offer and if you are looking for a "western" White House, I'm your gal. By the way, Senator McCain, ditto!

Let the 9Health Fair Begin

One of the brightest harbringers of the Colorado spring is the 9Health Fair. If you are looking to do a little body spring cleaning along with that of your house, this is the place to be. Not only can you have your blood tests completed, you can have many other tests done at a much lower cost than if you go to the doctors office. There are a variety of activities and educational booths available to keep you interested and busy.

The 9Health Fair usually runs between April 14th-20th, with an occasional Fair happening outside those dates. If you'd like to find a location near you, click here.

I'm sure they are also still looking for volunteers. There are thousands of incredible people who support this effort with their time. From doctors to citizens who point the way, they would love to chat with you about how you can best help. Click here if you are willing to dedicate the time to help us all stay healthy. Didn't We Just Fall Back?

Tonight before I go to bed, I need to remember to set my clocks forward an hour. It's time to "spring forward".

What has me really confused is that we just moved the clocks back an hour a couple months ago. I think someone out there is laughing as we turn up to church at the wrong time twice a year. Are we saving fuel?

At least the clocks change on Sundays. Pastors, Rabbis and Priests are probably a little more forgiving than some of the bosses out there.

The other good news is that the changing time announces the coming spring. Boy, am I ready!

Sharon McEachern and Denver's First Friday Art Walk

Described as one of the "fastest growing art districts in the country", the Sante Fe Art District is one of Denver's wonderful places to go for amazing art. From 5th to 10th Avenues along Sante Fe Boulevard, there are more than 30 galleries.

The First Friday Art Walk runs all year round from 6-9 pm. and art lovers are invited to see the work of incredible artists. If you are looking for something amazing to do on Friday nights, this is one weekly event not to miss.

Artist Sharon McEachern is known for her mixed media and has her work featured at the "Art Eclectic" show at the CORE New Art Space. The gallery is located at 9th and Sante Fe. Sharon wrote and asked that I invite all our Denver art connoisseurs to see her latest work. She has several very unique pieces and I look forward to visiting the gallery to see them up close and personal.

Denver is lucky to have a wide variety of artists in many of our fabulous galleries around the area. The next time you are looking for just the right masterpiece to hang on your wall, don't forget to take a look at the First Friday Art Walk.

Is the Successful Sale of Your House a Roll of the Dice?

With 24,489 houses on the market in the Denver area as of the end of January and only 2,987 closings, is the successful sale of your house a roll of the dice? The answer is a resounding "No". While there are certainly no guarantees, you can turn the odds in your favor by completing the followings steps.

1. Declutter- We've heard it dozens of times on the home shows and you will hear it from your Realtor and Stager. The less clutter, the larger a home feels and the less people will be distracted by your "stuff". We want them to picture themselves in your fabulous home. Pull out the boxes and pack anything you won't need for a couple months, including those precious family photos, to create open space on walls, counters and shelves.
2. Clean- Before your house goes on the market, do the spring cleaning. It's time to wipe the baseboards, wash the windows and have the carpets professionally cleaned. If a buyer comes in and sees dirty light switches, it turns them off. Professional cleaning services are available for a one time deep clean. If you don't have the time, hire a professional. It may cost you now, but you'll reap the benefits of a sold house later.
3. Paint- It's just like buying a new car and getting the first ding, when you paint, it is inevitable that you'll bump the wall with furniture or the dog will rub up against it. If your walls have a few scrapes, get out the brush and repaint it. Once again, it will take time, but paint is relatively inexpensive. It contributes to the clean feeling that a buyer will experience when they walk in. If you have any odd colors, repaint the walls neutral. To get some idea of what buyers are looking for, you can take a tour of new model homes or check with your Realtor.
4. Replace Burnt Out Bulbs- Buyers love light and you can create an open and light filled space by replacing burnt out bulbs and turning on the fixtures in each room.
5. Price it Right- This is the biggest contributer to whether or not your house will sell. Forget what your neighbors house sold for last year because it is a new market and your home may have experienced a drop in value. Your Realtor will run a comparative market analysis. It is critical that you price it at, or even just a little below, where other similar homes have sold.
6. Get it Done Before the Showings Start- Once people have made the decision to sell, they usually want the house on the market right away. But, we want to make sure every buyer sees the home in its best condition. If you need two weeks to get everything done, wait before opening it to buyers. We can put up a coming soon sign until you are ready. This also gives your Realtor time to get the photographer through and provide professional brochures that will highlight the features of your house.
7. Every Showing Counts- Having your house on the market is inconvenient and frustrating at times. But when the office calls to schedule a showing, say "Yes" whenever possible. Buyers have a variety of schedules and it's important that we accommodate them. In my experience, the majority of buyers will never return after a showing time has been turned down.
8. Hire a Professional- Marketing your house is critical in this market. Since most buyers are finding their houses on-line, make sure your Realtor has a strong internet presence. The more people who see the photos of your house, the better chance it will sell, especially if you have completed all the above steps.

Whenever I take a listing, the first person I call is my preferred stager. She visits the house at no cost to the seller and makes recommendations on how best to stage the home. Sellers then paint, add table settings and get rid of the clutter. While each house may not look like a show home, just a few simple changes can make a big difference.

Take these steps and increase your odds that you will be successful in putting your home in the SOLD column.

Is a Visit to Colorado on your Bucket List?

Yesterday my friend Gail and I went to see "The Bucket List". I laughed and cried. We all have our bucket list even as young people. Some want to get married and have children and others want to make a million and travel the globe. When I got home, I started my bucket list. I have lots of places I'd like to visit during my lifetime. If Colorado is listed as one of your destinations not to miss, you may want to check it off by visiting in 2008 or 2009. The only problem is going to be how to narrow down where to visit during your time here. So, I've broken it down by seasons with a few suggestions.

Winter- What comes to mind? Probably skiing. There are 26 ski resorts in Colorado from tiny Ski Cooper, where my son learned to ski, to the grand daddy Vail with almost 5,300 ski-able acres. If you aren't a skier, try dog-sledding, ice skating, snowshoeing or another winter sport. If you are a cowboy or girl at heart, the National Western Stock Show is a Denver highlight during January. I've never seen so many kinds of chickens and rabbits. Who knew? Frisco's Gold Rush is in early February and Steamboat has the Annual Winter Carnival in its 94th year.
Spring- You'll find many a die hard rafter in one of our many rivers across the state. While the ride may require a wet suit, the water is the highest at this time of year. Spring skiing is usually great. While the snow may be a little mushy, lots of people ski in shorts. Fruita has the Fat Tire Festival and Mike the Headless Chicken Days, the Grand Valley has Spring Barrel Tasting and Salida and Buena Vista sponsor the National River Cleanup Greenup. Creede has the Silver Chef Competition at the Taste of Creede. If you love jazz, the Estes Park Jazz Fest and Grand Junction Art and Jazz Festival are both in May.
Summer- Late June and early July feature amazing wildflowers in the high country. I love to visit Yankee Boy Basin with my camera and brown bag lunch. I can spend all day enjoying the outdoors and amazing views of Colorado. For those bike riders, amazing riding places are available throughout the state. Many of the best ski areas in winter, become wonderful hosts for mountain biking activities. Ride the lift to the top and work your way down the trail on your favorite bike. Buena Vista has the BalloonaVista, Fort Collins hosts the Colorado Brewer's Festival now in its 18th year and Frisco will make your mouth water with the Colorado BBQ Challenge. You'll enjoy Music in the Mountains in Durango and the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo in Steamboat Springs.
Fall- Fall in Colorado makes me think of all the wonderful fall colors. There are special drives you can take to see some of the most amazing colors in nature. Estes Park has the Scottish and Irish Highlands Festival, Delta hosts the Blues Festival and Grand Junction has the 16th Annual Colorado Mountain Winefest. Glenwood Springs invites you to the 8th Annual Historic Ghost Walk at the Linwood Cemetery and Creede will tempt you with its Chocolate Tasting Festival. Denver sponsors the International Wine Festival and Taste of Colorado. There is never enough wine or chocolate!

I'm tired just thinking of all the great Colorado activities and I've only just scratched the surface. This doesn't include the amazing hiking trails, the fourteeners just waiting to be climbed, fantastic museums, national parks and shopping, shopping, shopping. Everyone Needs Puppy Therapy

I've been in therapy since early January. I meet with my therapists every Saturday morning for an hour. The cost adds up, but it has been well worth the six dollars a session. I highly recommend these therapists. There is Princess the lab mix, Busby and Arnold the golden retriever brothers, Bailey the australian shepherd mix, Otis the bulldog, etc. I can't remember all their names, but these guys are memorable and will make even the grumpiest person leave with a smile on their face.

These are my puppy therapists.

As most of you know, I adopted Olive, a mixed English Pointer, just before Christmas. She has been a wonderful addition to the family. She attends classes at the Denver Dumb Friends League including Puppy Preschool and Elementary Puppy. Every Saturday morning, all the puppies get together to play. The session is focused on socializing the pups with a little obedience thrown in for good measure. Watching puppies play is the most wonderful experience. They leap, run, tackle, chew, bark and totally give in to play. They are a joy to watch and function as my Saturday therapy. I think everyone needs puppy therapy.

I'm not sure the training staff will let you watch, so you may need to adopt a puppy so you can get admitted into the best therapy yet.

Now, my only concern is where will I go for therapy when Olive grows up?

Fourth Quarter 2007 Denver Real Estate Absorption Rates

Fourth quarter real estate statistics show that Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree are continuing to average a lower absorption rate in comparison to other featured areas, which can translate into quicker home sales. North Jefferson County's absorption rate is also lower in this current quarter. During the third quarter we had three areas identified as a Buyers Market. This quarter, we are up to eight areas. Buyers tend to shy away from purchasing a home during the holidays and that may explain the increase.

Considering Absorption Rate is one way to measure the health of our real estate market. Absorption Rate designates the number of months of housing supply on hand. The larger the supply, the more competition there is for sellers and the higher likelihood that prices will drop or concessions will be offered. The market has definitely slowed in a the last quarter.

More Months of Supply = Buyer's Market = Possible Reduced Pricing and/or Concessions

Fewer Months of Supply = Seller's Market = Possible Price Increases and/or Bidding Wars

The commonly accepted separation between markets is:

This quarter, I have created a separate chart showing the absorption rate in the condominium market. There is a higher average absorption rate in most areas in comparison to single family homes. Check out the October absorption rate in North Jefferson County. If we had only looked at October statistics, we would not have had the total picture. October's rate of more than a two year supply on the market was an aberration and has corrected in the following months. This is a good reason why we look at longer term trends.

I've heard it said over and over that all real estate is local. This quarterly review of absorption rates clearly shows that is the case. There is a huge difference between Northeast Denver condominium sales where we are averaging a fifteen month home supply and the four month supply of single family homes available in Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree. I'll be writing another post in the next week or two that compares quarterly averages throughout 2007. I'm hoping that we'll begin seeing improvement in the market this year. The next few quarterly reports will tell.

The Housing Woulda Shoulda Couldas

"You know, your Dad and I almost bought that land years ago. Just imagine what it is worth today." My mom said that every time drove by land along Parker Road just of I-225. That was a few years ago when my sisters and I were growing up. Is this year's housing market one where we may look back and wish we woulda made that decision to buy?

When I listen to the Sunday financial shows one person will tell us that we've hit bottom and the time is ripe to buy. The next "expert" will tell us that the housing market still has a long way to drop. There are more mortgages that are going to be adjusting this year and some families will be hit hard. However, the new federal tax rebates are coming this summer and a quick three quarter point drop by the feds this week may begin the turn around. So, what should we do?

That depends. (Don't you hate that kind of answer? It happens to be the right one in every housing market.)

What are your circumstances?

If you have a house you need to sell before you can buy another, it may be time to hold if there isn't enough equity in the property to actually walk away from the closing table with enough to buy a new one.

If you are looking to buy a home and plan on staying in it for a minimum of three to five years, it's probably a great time to buy.

I suggest meeting with your family members, real estate professional and financial advisor to talk about whether or not the time is perfect to begin looking for a house you can make your home.

Don't let the woulda, shoulda, couldas catch you if now is the perfect time for you to buy.

Winter Silence at Cherry Creek State Park

In summer, Cherry Creek State Park is filled with bikers, hikers, traffic and boaters. It is always busy because of its convenience to the Denver area and all the activities that it supports. The Reservoir takes on a different feel during winter, especially after a winter storm. The amazing beauty and silence makes it a wonderful place to visit in the winter too.

Around Christmas I spent some time enjoying the park. It was cold, but beautiful.

Winter options include ice fishing and cross country skiing. While I love riding my bike at the park during the summer, I have to admit that my winter visit was wonderful and I can't wait to go back.

December 2007 Home Sales- Lowry Neighborhood

Here is an overview of December 2007 home sales in the Lowry neighborhood. The area is generally located between Yosemite Street (east) and Quebec Street (west), E. 11th Avenue (north) and Alameda Avenue (south). There is a small pocket that juts out to the west side. The Lowry neighborhood was developed as a result of the Lowry Air Force Base closure. It is a wonderful community that has a variety of parks, the Lowry Town Center and neighborhood activities that are scheduled year round.

Any Hope of Keeping Your New Year's Resolutions?

Like most people, the end of every year I begin thinking about my New Year's Resolutions, or the goals I want to accomplish. Is there any hope that we can keep those resolutions? Here are a few steps I hope to use in accomplishing mine.

1. Keep the goals simple and reasonable. If you want to lose 100 pounds, begin with 10 or 20 pounds. That doesn't seem like such an insurmountable impossibility. We can always modify that once we accomplish the goal.
2. Anticipate and plan for roadblocks. What has kept me from accomplishing that goal in the past and what can I do to prevent that from happening again? If I can't get up early in the morning to exercise despite my best laid plans, maybe I need to work some exercise into my day by parking farther away or taking the stairs at work.
3. Plan for the long haul. We'll all miss out on a few days, but this is a long race. Remember, you have all year. Just get back on track when things have not gone as planned and pat yourself on the back when you make progress.
4. Have a support system. We all need a little encouragement at times and it's important that I let key people know what I am trying to accomplish. There may be that one person who always tries to sabotage us, so don't tell him or her. We need to hand pick those people who can inspire us to greatness. We also can be part of someone else's support system.
5. Measure your progress. Keep track of the progress you've made so you can look back and see the small changes. Those changes will add up to something big over time. When you get discouraged, you can always look at the progress you made and get re-energized.

In my opinion, goal setting is one of the most important things we can do. It gives us focus and direction and pushes us to improve. I don't meet all my goals each year, but I have made considerable progress over time. This year, one of my goals is to lose weight. While I'd like to see those washboard abs on my body, I'd settle for a smaller pair of jeans. After all, those washboard abs can be my resolution for next year.

Every Ornament Has a Story

Every Christmas I admire the most creative and beautifully decorated trees imaginable. I see them at stores, on do it yourself television shows and in other people's homes. However, I wouldn't trade my tree for any of them. Why? Because every one of our well-loved ornaments has a story.

We pull out the ornament box and unwrap each piece from toilet paper to discover what lies within. From the "Baby's First Christmas 1980" ornament to the hand crafted ornaments made over the years by my son, sisters and friends. Some of the ornaments hung on the trees we had when I grew up. My son and I sat and laughed as we talked about memories that were inspired by each of those treasures that only come out once a year.

We went through the bread dough ornament phases where we hand molded each piece to the reindeer clothes pins that included moving eyes and puffy tails. I've taken tole painting classes, cut wooden ornaments and hand painted each one. There are those that are crafted with needlepoint and works of art done by my sisters who both are very artistic. Many of them were created as moms, dads, nieces, nephews, sisters, sons, daughters and friends sat around the kitchen table and played. Several of the ornaments aren't even recognizable to anyone but my son and I. A very young boy molded those and painted wild designs. It brings a smile to my face today.

We have a variety from quirky ornaments to some pieces that take my breath away. Many families pass on heirlooms in the form of furniture and jewelry. Our family heirlooms will include small pieces that hang on a tree with stories to remind of of life's difficulties and triumphs. As I look at them, I realize how quickly time flies and how blessed we are to have each other and those crazy and lovely memories to see us through.

Those wonderful designers that create beautiful Christmas delights just can't compete. All my ornaments have a story and each one of them is priceless.

An Olive for Christmas

The snow has been falling over the last week, Christmas music fills the air and the best holiday shows are on television, sometimes over and over again. Christmas is a wonderful time of year.

This year I decided to get myself a Christmas present. While things are a bit slow, I have time to read, sit by the fireplace, get things done around the house, plan the Christmas Eve menu and...housebreak a new puppy.

Olive, a mixed English Pointer, has joined the Steck family. As most of you know, I had to put my golden retriever, Bailey, down earlier this year because of old age and a stroke. I've missed her terribly. Courtney, my yellow lab, has also been in a bit of a funk. So, it was time.

I had considered getting a Golden Doodle, but most of my dogs have come from the shelter. I visited the Denver Dumb Friends League several times over the last six weeks. It was difficult to walk away without a dog, but the first couple of times, I just thought about Bailey. About a week ago, I went in and the right "one" was there. Olive, formerly Jessie, had been shipped in from another pound and was very shy. The adoption counselor assured me that she had been bounced around probably most of her short life and would readjust quickly, especially with another dog in the house.

Boy, was she right. Olive has fit right in and Courtney, while she gets annoyed on occasion, is playing like a puppy herself. I still miss Bailey, but our family feels a bit more complete with Olive in the mix. She has brought love and new energy into my house just in time for Christmas.

We have an "Olive" for Christmas and she's the best present yet.

The Denver Dumb Friends League staff told me they average 70 new dogs in every day and thankfully, about 70 are adopted per day. But, they are just breaking even at this point. I want to thank all of you ARers who were so supportive when Bailey died. You made such a difference for me when I was going through such a tough time.

Snowflakes and Rainbows

It was a bit frigid today as I set out to preview houses for some of my clients. As I finished checking out the condition of the last home, the snowflakes started coming down. After all, it is December.

I turned onto the highway and in the eastern sky was the most beautiful rainbow. Imagine that...snowflakes and rainbows. I smiled all the way home. What a gift.

Keeping Families and Friends Connected with Facebook

My sisters and I have been very close over the years, especially since both of our parents are no longer with us. We've been to wonderful places during our sister reunions and have been asked to leave a few because we were having so much fun. Now the kids are grown and living across the country and it has been a bit difficult to keep in touch. I think I found the answer. Facebook.

Teresa Boardman, one of my favorite real estate bloggers from Minnesota, uses technology to keep in touch with her family. So, I decided to give it a shot. Facebook allows us to create private groups where only invited members can visit. That is great news since my family members can be a bit wild and crazy and I'm not sure I want that out in the public domain. Too many people know already. Our private family group is "The Three Sisters and Family Forum".

We can share photos, videos, interesting links and catch up on general family happenings. I hope everyone will contribute their thoughts as we try to plan a long overdue family reunion. We are small, but fierce.

If you want to reconnect with a special group of people, this may be the place. It may be family, old or new college friends or even your work group. You can join groups related to your hobbies and interests. It really is a wonderful place to interact with people. Teresa said it best when she wrote that technology hasn't made things impersonal, she has found that it has created more opportunities to stay in touch.

To get started, sign up as a user. From that point you can create a new group. Make sure it is marked as a private group with invited members only. If you create the group, you will be the administrator and the only one who can invite people to join. When prospective members are invited, they will get an email with the appropriate links to join.

Then it's time to have fun. Load all those crazy family photos and use the "wall" to post your latest family graffiti. Just a quick warning: Don't post that crazy shot of you dancing on the table in Mexico as your profile photo. That's the one the public will see. Let's keep our wild side private.

There are many social networking sites out there and we've all heard the good and bad news about joining. These sites can help you stay connected with family members and friends even when you are far apart. Even the grandparents can get involved. So, let your fingers do the walking and get reconnected.

A Colorado Girl Through and Through

There is no place like home. There is no place like home.

My niece, Heather, sent around one of those "getting to know you" questionnaires the other day. You know the one.

Where are the last four places you have lived?
Where are the last four places you've worked?
If you could be anywhere, where would you be?
What have you traveled?

When I answered the question about where you have lived, all four of my answers involved places in Colorado. I've never lived any place else. I'm one of those Colorado natives.

I was born at Fort Carson, near Colorado Springs because my father was in the army. By the time I was three we were living in a house in Hoffman Heights in Aurora since my dad had by then been assigned to Fitzsimmons. I actually remember when both Fitzsimmons and Lowry were military bases and Chambers Road was dirt. Since then, the only other city I have lived in is Denver.

My two sisters have moved away for a time with my younger one, Wendy, finally coming home and living in Arvada. She still owns the house we grew up in. My older sister, Mary, is in Flagstaff, Arizona, but I think her heart is calling her home. I won't be surprised to see her and the rest of her family back here in the next few years.

When I looked at the area I've lived in since I was a toddler, it surprised me that I've never lived outside of about a twenty mile radius. At first I was a little shocked and thought about how I probably have missed some grand adventures by not leaving Colorado and the Denver metro area in particular. Then I realized, when you are where you belong, there is no reason to move. My adventures come when I travel. I've been to Germany, the Netherlands, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Austria, Ireland and lots of great states in this country. As a matter of fact, my 50th birthday is just a little over a year away and I'm planning to be on a cruise to Antarctica (funding permitting) when I blow out my candles. But after all the wonderful experiences and fabulous people, I always am excited to come home.

I'm a Colorado girl through and through. I'm lucky enough to have been born in one of the most beautiful and amazing states in our country. For those of you who have been reborn in Colorado, you know exactly what I mean. You may have begun life elsewhere, but Colorado beckoned and here you are.

So I was born here and plan, many years from now, to die here. I'm already in my paradise. There is no where I'd rather be. After all, there is no place like home.

Denver Crime Information Now at Your Fingertips

What were you doing between 7pm and 9pm on Thanksgiving Day? While I was relaxing after a wonderful meal with family members and friends, the bad guys were stealing things from cars in the Lowry neighborhood. How do I know that?

The Denver Police Department and Global Information Systems Department have developed interactive crime mapping software that is available to all of us.

Want to know what is going on in your neighborhood?

We can search by address, crimes occurring near parks, schools or libraries and also by neighborhood. Our search gives us a community map with reported crimes.

If we scroll down further, we can find specific crimes that were reported by date, time and location.

How does this help us? In a couple of ways.

We'll know what to keep an eye out for on specific suspicious activities. If I'm aware that criminals are stealing things out of cars, I will look closer when I see a person or people around a car in my neighborhood that don't look familiar.
If I'm looking to purchase in a particular community, I can check out the facts before I buy.

It's Not About the Turkey

Thank goodness it's not about the turkey. My family members will tell you that I'm turkey challenged. The last turkey I cooked a number of years ago was still raw inside and inedible. They don't trust me with the turkey.

My contribution to the family feast is barbecued brisket. I know it is unusual to have brisket at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but it is my speciality. The only other items they will allow me to bring to family events are those already cooked and packaged at the grocery store.

Thanksgiving is about taking time out of our busy lives to pause and consider all of the people and opportunities that make our hard work worthwhile. It is our time to sit down with special people, usually over a wonderful feast, and thank them for the difference they have made in our lives.

What am I thankful for?

The soldiers around the world who are keeping us safe so we can celebrate our Thanksgiving in peace.
The families of our military personnel who sacrifice to support them.
The first responders who will be working around the clock to keep my local community safe while I carve the brisket, and first responder families who miss out on Thanksgiving with their loved one.
My family and friends who support, encourage and occasionally correct me when my feet have strayed off the path.

While the turkey someone else in my family will cook for safety reasons, it is just a very small part.

I wish you and your family a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.

The Denver Aquarium - An Unusual and Wonderful Night Out

What do you think of when the Denver Aquarium comes to mind? A weekend outing for the kids? If you are looking for an unusual place to meet friends or have a wonderful night out, the Denver Aquarium may be just the spot.

Start the evening in the restaurant with some of the fabulous entrees. Take your time. You'll enjoy watching the fish swimming by, sharks included, as you dine. They will not, however, allow your to pick your dinner from the many varieties in the tank.

Then it is time to take a stroll through the main aquarium features. What makes this outing so great is that you and your family or friends will have most of the place to yourself.

There is something about sharks that fascinates me. I don't have to wait for my turn at the glass and then hope that the sharks swim somewhere close. I can press my nose up against the glass and really look at those incredible teeth. If I want to spend hours looking, I can. Then there are the clown fish. If you here someone say, "Nemo", you know that those colorful swimmers are just around the corner. There is also large snake collection for reptile lovers.

So, if you haven't made plans for Friday night and it looks like all the restaurants are already full, take the leap and visit the aquarium at night. You may enjoy it enough to make it a habit.

The Denver Aquarium is open until 10:00 pm. on weekdays and 11:00 pm. on Friday and Saturday nights. Dinner will run about $40-$50 per person with a wonderful entree, appetizers and drinks. The visit to the aquarium will add an additional $13.75 per person for adults. It will be a memorable and enjoyable night out on the town, especially when the kids come along.

It May Be Time for a Home Inspection Even if You Aren't Selling

Have you ever considered hiring an inspector to go through your house and identify any problems that currently exist?

There are a couple of reasons an inspection is important.

One of the most critical steps in the purchase of a home is the inspection. The inspector is like a detective going through the house testing the systems to make sure they all work and pointing out deficiencies in a home that either are or may become expensive repairs. This is a time where a buyer may walk away from the purchase of a home with no penalties. Why? Because it is important that a buyer have an opportunity to evaluate the condition of a home before they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Over the last few years, I've watched inspectors find leaks that may have occurred over years, decks that were collapse hazards, outlets that didn't work, higher than acceptable levels of radon and serious deficiencies in furnaces. In some cases, people had been living with this problems for years and they weren't discovered until a new buyer hired a home inspector. At that time, sellers either made the necessary repairs, credited back money to the buyers to make those repairs or refused to correct the deficiencies. It costs the sellers money at a time when every dollar counts.

Hiring an inspector will cost around $350-$500 depending upon what kind of testing you want done. The inspector may also recommend hiring someone with specific expertise in furnaces, plumbing or other areas where there are possible problems. It is worth the cost to follow through.

Find qualified inspectors by asking friends and coworkers who they used during their last home purchase or by contacting your Realtor and asking who they recommend. You may also want to visit Active Rain and search for home inspectors in your area.

Keep your family safe and your home in top condition by hiring a professional every few years to go through your home's systems. You'll pay now or pay later, but the safety of you and your family will be worth the cost.
