Havelock Still Grows

Regardless of the real estate news in other parts of the state and the country, Havelock, New Bern, and surrounding areas are still growing. Admittedly slower, but still making progress. National news has exerted some downward pressure on home prices but our immediate area is relatively stable. A note to buyers and sellers, remember, all real estate markets are local. Right now, it's a buyer's market. More news at www.jean-mitchell.com.

New Pier Ready to Fish

A new pier is in use on the Beaufort side of the Morehead/Beaufort bridge. It's on the opposite side of the bridge from where the old Causeway Pier used to be. Fishermen (or should that be fisherpersons?) are already taking advantage of the great weather of the past week and using the pier to full advantage. If you're moving to the Havelock/New Bern area soon and need to know about outdoor recreation, fishing, golfing, boating, kayaking, hiking, we've got it all, call or email me. jeantmitchell@aol.com or 252.665.0413.

The Boats are Coming Down Hwy 70

The weather temperature and the number of trailered boats coming down NC Hwy 70 are directly proportional. The higher the temp the more boats of all kinds. Red, blue, brown, camoflage, large, small, I've even seen some checkered paint jobs. It's that time again. When blowing the dust out of your inboard or outboard don't forget about safety on the water. Be sure you have working communications equipment and the required safety devices required by the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard station at Ft. Macon can give you all the information you need to be safe and legal on North Carolina waterways. Safe Boating courses for newbies can be found at BoatUS. If sailing is your interest, we have a great sailing school within a short drive from Havelock at Oriental, NC. Then if want to live on the water as well as play, check the MLS on my website to find easy living waterfront properties.

Wow! My First Sighting

Eastern North Carolina has plenty of wildlife; deer, wild turkeys, foxes, bear, you name it. And I've seen birds of all kinds but yesterday (Sun. Mar. 11, '07) I saw the Rolls Royce of birds. I tip-toed quietly to get as close as I could and saw for the first time, a magnificent full-grown bald eagle standing on the bank of the Neuse River in the North Harlowe area off Shady View Beach Road. It was eating a puppy drum and was huge! My heart was beating hard and I was thrilled as I tried not to scare it away. Seeing the eagle tells me two things. First, the water must be relatively clean since eagles don't thrive in just any old environment. Two. The puppy drum are running in the river. Drum are a migratory fish and move in the Spring and Fall. The weather should be warming this week so I think I'll see what I can catch.

Ocean fishing hasn't begun in earnest yet. Check out the last major pier at Emerald Isle, www.bogueinletpier.com. They have a "phat" (meaning "great" for those who need an interpreter), live streaming videocam so you can find out when the action starts. I understand that two other smaller piers are under construction. I'll check them out this week-end.

Some of us don't like to catch, just eat. According to my North Carolina Seafood Availability chart from the NC State University Seafood Laboratory, March, April, and May are good months to find bluefish, grouper, king mackerel, porgy, sea bass, grey trout, clams, snapper, and tuna.

Speckled trout have been caught steadily in Clubfoot Creek, Adams Creek, and the ICW for the past 5 or 6 weeks so I've been told by the oldsters tough enough to stand the cold to catch them. They may still be there. It's worth a try. In a couple more weeks when the weather's consistently warmer, the summer flounder will be in the Neuse. Gigging time!! If you'd like to learn how to do it, contact me and let's talk. www.JeanTMitchell.com or 252.665.0413.

Eastern North Carolina is a great place to live.
