Wilson Lake in Kansas

Wilson Lake or Wilson Reservoir is a lake in the U.S. state of Kansas, on the border of Russell County and Lincoln County. It is a reservoir formed by the 130 ft (40 m) high Wilson Dam on Saline River. The dam was built in 1964 for flood control. The lake’s maximum capacity is 736,000 acre-feet (908 million m³).

There are 5 recreational parks at Wilson Lake. Most include boat ramps, showers, overnight camping sites, playgrouds, volleyball courts, swimming beaches, and picnic areas.

If you are into mountain biking, there is a bike trail that was recently opened and wraps a four-mile path over hilly areas and rocks. This trail is rated at an intermediate level and has some technical sections for bikers. The surrounding hills provide good climbs and exciting descents. For those looking for more of a relaxing time you may want to check out the Bur Oak Nature Trail located below the dam at Lake Wilson. It is a short, but an enjoyable nature trail that is 3/4 of a mile and has information about the surrounding community?s ecosystem.

December Home Improvement for Winter

Suggestions for December Home Improvement (winter maintenance):

Cleaning the gutters is a good idea in December. The majority of the leaves have fallen from the trees. Gutters should be cleaned to ensure proper drainage.

Changing the direction of the blades on the ceiling fans will force warm air downward, thus warming the room. You could possibly be able to turn down the heater a few notches and save a few pennies on your utility bill. You will want to keep the fan at a slow speed so it does not create a cool breeze.

Check roof vents for debris and insulation. If they are blocked, clear them to allow wet air to escape so it does not create condensation and mildew.

Interior valves for outside water faucets should be closed. All hoses should be disconnected. Outside faucets should be should be ran to wash out remaining water, then shut them off again. All water pipes should be wrapped with insulation to avoid bursting in cold weather, especially those near exterior walls in unheated basements and crawl spaces.

November Home Improvement for Fall/Winter

In November, while temperatures during the day are still mild, take a close look at the driveway, patio, sidewalk and steps. Any small holes or cracks should be patched with a filler or sealer. The cycle of water freezing and thawing can create more damage if left unrepaired.

Trim tree limbs back from the house or roof at least twelve inches. This decreases the chance of damage from wind and storms brushing the limbs against these surfaces.

November 4th is daylight savings time. Don't forget to turn your clocks back one hour. This is a good time to replace batteries in household carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. During the cooler months, typically windows stay closed and decorations such as holiday lights increase the risk of fire. This simple maintenance can save lives!

Clean and protect outdoor furniture and protect it from the harsh winter weather.

Basement window wells should be cleared of leaves to make sure they are draining properly. The wells can then be covered with plastic domes.

Porches and decks should be raked under to keep pests away.

Energy Savings and a Tax Credit

The federal government is encouraging homeowners to purchase components for their homes with higher energy-efficiency. To do so, the government is offering a reduced cost of certain upgrades by tax crediting those components that qualify. However, there is a time limit that expires at the year's end.

A list of examples include:

Windows, Skylights and storm doors (credit 10 percent of the cost of materials up to $200)

Roofing (10 percent of the cost to install an Energy Star certified metal roof)

Insulation (10 percent of the cost of materials up to $500, must meet the 2004 IECC)

Water Heaters (credit $300 for certain high efficiency models)

Solar Power (credit $2,000 up to 30 percent to install a photovoltaic system)

Heating and Cooling Systems (credit $300 for qualified AC and heating units)

America Recycles Day

America Recycles Day is officially recognized on November, 15th. Across the country, 10,000 Americans are expected to participate in hundreds of events all over the nation to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and to encourage Americans to sign personal pledges to recycle and buy recycled products.

Since the campaign's beginning in 1995, every year, millions more people become better educated about the importance of recycling in their homes and in the workplace as a result of this awareness day. The President of the United States declared November 15th America Recycles Day and many state and local governments issued proclamations and resolutions to show support for the national recycling day.

The campaign slogan, It All Comes Back To You, presents multiple messages: a recycled product can return to consumers as another new product; recycling comes back to consumers as an improved environment, preservation of resources and economic well-being of the country. The most important meaning of all is that it's everyone's responsibility to recycle!

America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and buy recycled products.
Shops and Offices in Aggieville, Manhattan, Kansas

Shops and offices

Aggieville contains a diverse menagerie of shops and businesses which are nearly all aimed at the college-age demographic. Since Aggieville's first shop, a laundromat, opened in 1898, local businesses have catered to students at the nearby university.

Varney's Book Store

Varney's bookstore sells school supplies to Kansas State students.

The largest shop in Aggieville, Varney's occupies nearly a half-block of space at the intersection of Manhattan Avenue and Moro Street. The shop, built in an old movie theater, sits at the "head" of Aggieville and is well-known for its iconic marquee, which often is emblazoned with messages to students. Varney's carries things that the average Kansas State student requires, from books and school supplies to apparel and computer software.

Powercat Illustrated / GoPowercat.com

The home offices of Powercat Illustrated and GoPowercat.com are located in Aggieville. This magazine and website company solely covers the Kansas State Wildcats sporting teams and is considered by many to be the premier source for Wildcat football, basketball and recruiting coverage.

Ballard's Sporting Goods

Selling sporting goods and licensed Kansas State apparel, Ballard's has been a staple on Moro Street for 54 years. The shop also handles custom t-shirt orders, and has been family-owned for its entire history.

On the Wildside

Since opening in 1990, On the Wildside has filled a niche as a unique shop selling custom hemp necklaces, incense, tapestries, door beads, posters and band paraphernalia (mostly the Grateful Dead, Bob Marley and Phish).

Other shops

Thread sells customized t-shirts. On the Wildside specializes in custom hemp jewlery and music memorabilia.

Defunct establishments

For one reason or another, some establishments did not stand the test of time. Here is a list of places that are no longer around:

The Pink Taco - restaurant on the corner of 11th and Moro; changed name to Bordertown, then became Mini's Diner[1]

Bombers - a bar/lounge that was renamed 'Club Karrington'. Prior to the name Bombers, the live music bar was The John, followed by Brothers and followed by Snooky's. Whatever the name, the historical building burned to the ground in the 1998 fire.[2]

Greek's Pizzaria was a local, original pizza parlor that was destroyed in the 1998 fire.

The Lucky Brew Grille - This sports bar/restaurant gave way to Porter's and Lucky's was relocated in Mission, KS [3]

Mighty Fine Doughnuts - This place sold doughnuts -- from like 9pm to 1am. Owned by the people who owned Lucky's.

Espresso Royale Cafe - an eclectic coffee shop that sprung up during the Seattle/grunge trend in the early 90's. It was quite a warming place, but closed. Radina's opened in its former location.

The Dark Horse Tavern - was a bar for "the long-hairs" that operated from 1969 to 1978.

Bars and Eateries in Aggieville, Manhattan, Kansas

A large part of the unique flavor of the Aggieville scene stems from the multitude of locally-owned and operated bars, eateries and shops located in the district. With over one hundred total businesses, the ever-changing tapestry of shops and restaurants brings a rich diversity of entertainment, food and drink while preserving the unique, small-town flavor of the area. Here is a flickr image-'map' of Aggieville.

Bars and eateries

With over 40 bars and restaurants in just six square blocks, Aggieville has been the premier weekend destination for Kansas State students and residents of Manhattan since the 1950s.
Patrons enjoy a bikini contest at Rusty's Last Chance.
Rusty's Last Chance

Rusty's Last Chance is the largest bar in Aggieville, although it is actually four bars that have been interconnected. Opened in the mid-1980s and housed in a former gas station, Rusty's was named to Playboy's Top 100 Bars List in 1997. Between 1996-2000, Last Chance was expanded several times to include Rusty's Next Door (a non-smoking bar), Rusty's Outback (with pool and darts) and Rusty's Other Side (with four pool tables). Since Rusty Wilson took over ownership in 1989, the bar has not been closed for a single holiday, operating 365 days each year. The complex houses over sixty televisions, and although the owners don't classify it as a sports bar, it was ranked the 12th-best sports bar in America by Sports Illustrated in 2005.

Kite's Bar and Grill

Rich in history, Kite's has served Aggieville intermittently for over fifty years. Originally opened by legendary Kansas State baseball player Kite Thomas in the 1950's, the bar quickly became a favorite with the simple slogan "meet your friends at Kite's". In the 1960's, Kite ran into hard times and was forced to sell his bar, but the legendary name Kite's lived on under another owner until 1993. The bar was eventually reopened by Rusty Wilson, then-owner of Rusty's Last Chance. Today, Kite's has expanded to a full block-long bar featuring flat-screen televisions, three full-service bars and a patio.

Auntie Mae's Parlor

In 1927, an enterprising widow named Dora Mae Walters took over for her deceased husband's plumbing store. After two rough years in plumbing, Walters opened a speakeasy in the dingy basement of the shop. When Prohibition was repealed, the speakeasy was closed, but in 1974, Auntie Mae's Parlor opened in the same location and was named after the original "Auntie Mae" who brought the small town of Manhattan the drink it needed in the midst of the Great Depression.
The Aggie Lounge, Aggieville's beloved hole-in-the-wall.
The Aggie Lounge

Opened in 1952, the Aggie Lounge or "The Lou" is the closest thing in Aggieville to a dive bar. With nachos and other snacks until midnight and a full-service bar, the Lounge has been a favorite for over fifty years. Located a bit off of the main "strip" on N. 12th Street, "The Lou" maintains a loyal customer base and has remained a staple of Aggieville history.

Hibachi Hut

Serving traditional American cuisine along with Cajun and Creole dishes, the Hibachi Hut has been located in Aggieville since 1959. The legendary "Belly Bomb" burger and friendly atmosphere have helped make Hibachi Hut a favorite for nearly fifty years.

So Long Saloon

Featuring a lovingly restored 1904 Brunswick San Juan bar made entirely of mahogany and maple, So Long Saloon has served Aggieville with its legendary burgers and cowboy hospitality since opening in 2001. Awarded the prestigious "Best Hamburger" award by the Kansas Beef Council in 2004 for the "Resist Temptation Burger," So Long has quickly become an Aggieville favorite.
Coco Bolo's, with its diverse menu, is one of Aggieville's most popular restaurants.
Coco Bolo's

Operated by two native Manhattan brothers, this eclectic bar and grill serves original recipes in a lively atmosphere surrounded with bright colors and original art pieces. It has grown to become one of Aggieville's premier restaurants.

Rock-a-Belly Deli

Since opening in 1987, Rock-a-Belly Deli has been a popular hangout for students after classes with its homemade sandwiches. Advertising itself as a "very small place, a very small kitchen and a half-fast cook," Rock-a-Belly is one of the prized local businesses that thrives in Aggieville.

Pizza Hut

Aggieville is home to the world's oldest continually-operated Pizza Hut. A Kansas franchise originally opened in Aggieville in 1960, the Pizza Hut has been a staple of the area for over forty years.

Other bars and eateries
Buffalo Wild Wings at the corner of Manhattan Ave. and Moro St.

Bluestem Bistro

Burger King

Planet Sub

Coldstone Creamery

Mr. Goodcents

O'Malley's Alley

Porter's

Longhorn's Saloon

Fast Eddy's Pool Hall

Daylight Donuts

Domino's Pizza

Subway

Fat's Bar

Chipotle

Silverado Saloon

The Purple Pig

Buffalo Wild Wings

Jimmy John's

The Kathouse Lounge

Happy Valley

The Texas Star

Hunam Express

PJ's Pub

The Pita Pit

Radina's Coffeehouse

The Salty Rim

Pat's Blue Rib'n BBQ

Tank's Tavern

Tubby's Bar and Grill

Starbucks

Courtesy of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aggieville

Aggieville in Manhattan, Kansas

Aggieville is the name of six square blocks consisting of college-age oriented bars, restaurants and shops in Manhattan, Kansas.

Before 1898, students at the Kansas State Agricultural College (now Kansas State University) had to purchase their textbooks downtown, which, in the age before the automobile, was inconvenient due to distance and often, mud-soaked roads. The college decided to build a student bookstore and dining facility closer to campus, but it was shut down in June of 1899 after a political upheaval in the college's Board of Regents. That September, a group of students started the Student Co-Operative Association, and bought the bookstore.

That bookstore would serve as the cornerstone for a developing shopping district that catered specifically to college students. What was once a sparsely populated collection of houses was fast becoming a rich and diverse shopping center, the first of its kind in Kansas. Over time, the area would come to be called Aggieville, after the school's mascot, the Kansas State Agricultural College Aggies. Even when the school's mascot was changed to the Kansas State Wildcats, the name Aggieville stuck.

After World War I, Aggieville experienced enormous growth. Trolly lines were built, and later paved over during the car boom of the 1940s. In the 1950s, bars and restaurants began to develop and over the next 30 years, Aggieville would become known as an entertainment and dining district.

With the passing of the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984, Aggieville saw a slight dip in business at its bars and saw more shops and restaurants move in. However, with the hiring of Jon Wefald as Kansas State University's new president in 1986, enrollment at the college nearly doubled over the next 20 years and with the increased student population, Aggieville saw a new boom in all types of businesses: shops, bars and eateries.

Aggieville was home to riots in 1986, some of the earliest collegiate sports riots in the United States. In 1998, Aggieville played host to a massive celebration after the team's first defeat of Nebraska since 1969, which included the tearing down of the goal posts and dragging them, en masse, to the rooftop of Rusty's Last Chance.

Aggieville also plays host yearly to the "Little Apple New Year's Eve" celebration, where revelers pack the streets of the district to help ring in the new year. At midnight, a brightly-lit apple is dropped from the Varney's Bookstore marquee. The celebration brought an estimated 10,000 people to Aggieville on December 31, 2005, and was featured live on Fox News. A week before each Spring Break, Aggieville plays host to its annual "St. Patrick's Day in the Ville" celebration. This event is called "Fake Patty's Day" by locals because it actually takes place a week or so before the real St. Patrick's Day. Emerald-clad partygoers pack the streets early in the morning and stay late into the evening to watch the annual St. Patrick's Day 5K race and to sample Aggieville's bars.

Today, Aggieville is famous for its bars, its friendly "residents" and its massive, tumultuous celebrations following Kansas State football and basketball victories. It is a rich, vibrant and eclectic district with over 100 shops and eateries that serves as an entertainment district for Kansas State students and residents of the surrounding area.

Courtesy of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aggieville

Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium

Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium is a stadium in Manhattan, Kansas. It is used solely for American football, and is the home field of the Kansas State University Wildcats.

Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium opened as KSU Stadium in 1968, with a capacity of 35,000. It was the replacement for Memorial Stadium, which hosted Kansas State football games since 1922 (and is still standing today). The first game played at the new stadium was on September 21, 1968 - Kansas State shut out the Colorado State Rams 21-0.

In 1970, 4,000 permanent bleacher seats were added to the east side and 3,000 temporary seats on the west side. Also that year, an AstroTurf playing field was installed in place of natural grass. Prior to the 1991 season, a new AstroTurf surface was installed and the playing field was named Wagner Field for the Dave and Carol Wagner family of Dodge City, Kansas.[1] In 1993, on its 25th anniversary, KSU Stadium saw its first significant permanent additions - a five-level press box and luxury suites on the west side of the field.

After the 1998 season, the stadium underwent another expansion, a $12.8 million USD project designed by HOK Sport that increased the official seating capacity to 50,300 and added an upper deck on the east grandstands, club seating, and more luxury suites. Prior to the 2002 season, the artificial turf was updated to a more cushioned FieldTurf surface at a cost of $800,000.

Before the final game of the 2005 season, Kansas State offered retiring head coach Bill Snyder the opportunity to rename KSU Stadium. Snyder had turned the Wildcats, once among the worst college football teams, into a frequent championship contender in the Big 12 Conference. When he was asked about renaming the stadium, Snyder told school officials, "If you are going to do it, name it after the people that I care about the most."[3] Hence, the Regents renamed the stadium to honor the family of the coach who had led the team for 17 years.[4]

In 2006, another $5.6 million was used to renovate the locker-room complex and add new north end zone seating, raising the permanent seating capacity by approximately 1,900, to 52,200. The renovation also included new audio and visual electronics and a new hydrotherapy center. Although new permanent seating was added, the athletic department actually lowered the stadium's official seating capcity to 50,000 following the renovation.

Historical notes

From 1996 to 2000, Kansas State won 26 consecutive games on its home field. This is the 25th-longest home winning streak in NCAA history.

On August 31, 1996, the stadium hosted the first athletic competition in Big 12 Conference history: a football game between Kansas State and Texas Tech University.[1] Kansas State won the game 21-14 amid pomp and ceremony, including a skydiver delivering the first conference game ball.

Kansas State's 100th game at Snyder Stadium was a 14-21 loss to Iowa State University on November 16, 1985.

Kansas State's 200th game at Snyder Stadium was a 40-7 win over Louisiana Tech on November 17, 2001.

The stadium has hosted several Kansas high school football State Championship contests and Kansas Shrine Bowl games.

TOP 10 CROWDS AT SNYDER STADIUM:

53,811 Nebraska, November 11, 2000

53,310 Oklahoma, October 16, 2004

53,011 Oklahoma, October 14, 2000

52,254 Kansas, October 9, 1999

52,234 Nebraska, October 23, 2004

Information about Kanopolis, Kansas

Kanopolis is a city in Ellsworth County, Kansas, United States. The town is built on the site of Fort Harker, a United States Army base that housed infantry and cavalry troops involved in the Indian Wars from 1867 to 1872. After Fort Harker was closed, the new town was given the name of Kanopolis because it was envisioned as the "Central Metropolis" of the state and in due time was to be its capitol. Most settlement in the area instead went to Ellsworth, Kansas. The population was 543 at the 2000 census.

Fort Ellsworth was the first frontier fort established in the Kanopolis area. It was built by the United States Army in August, 1864 at the junction of the Fort Riley-Fort Larned Road and the Smoky Hill Trail, near the Smoky Hill River. Within two years of its creation, the fort had grown in importance as a military staging post and supply depot for forts further west, and needed to expand to continue meeting its mission. On November 17, 1866, the Army ordered the construction of Fort Harker about 1.6 km (1 mile) northeast of Fort Ellsworth. Fort Ellsworth was closed in early 1867, and the town of Ellsworth was founded in its place. For the next five years, Fort Harker became one of the most important military stations west of the Missouri River.

With the Indian Wars and the railroads both moving further and further west, Fort Harker was no longer needed as a military installation. It was officially ordered closed on April 8, 1872 and over the next several months was sold to developers. The new town was given the name of Kanopolis because it was envisioned as the "Central Metropolis" of the state and in due time was to be its capitol. It was laid out to provide for a city of 150,000 people by the Kanopolis Land Company.

Kanopolis was incorporated January 6, 1887. "The Kanopolis Journal", a weekly newspaper of Kanopolis printed and distributed 50,000 sample copies that were sent back East to promote "The Future Great City" of central Kansas with an unequalled location and natural advantages. This issue dated May 24, 1890, told of two large hotels, a hardware store, roller mill, woolen mills, foundry and irons works, carriage works, an earthenware works, an elevator, the Union Pacific depot, three churches and a school.

Although Kanopolis did not reach the proportion that the early planners had hoped and worked for, the town has prospered through the years. Many of the early business places have disappeared and new ones have taken their places. It has a library and community center on the park grounds.

As of the census of 2000, there were 543 people, 248 households, and 153 families residing in the city. The population density was 174.7/km² (453.7/mi²). There were 295 housing units at an average density of 94.9/km² (246.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 85.21% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Asian, 2.76% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.71% of the population.

There were 248 households out of which 25.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% were non-families. 34.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.80.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $31,413, and the median income for a family was $39,531. Males had a median income of $30,170 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,161. About 4.6% of families and 6.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.7% of those under age 18 and 12.8% of those age 65 or over.

Courtesy of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanopolis,_Kansas
